Spotlight and dashboard in Panther or something really strange??

Well my school uses Apple Computers (iBooks,iBook G4's,PowerBook G4's,iMacs,eMacs,Airport Extreme, and iPods plus Ive seen some PowerMac G4's here and there) which makes me really happy since I love Apple and Mac!! But I noticed something really weird My school does NOT upgrade to the latest version of Mac OS (they still had OS 9.2.2 in late 2004 on ALL the computers) and I see the Dashboard and the little spotlight icon right next to the clock. Are these avalible in OS X Panther?
Thanks

If you see Dashboard and the Spotlight icon on a Mac, it is running Tiger.
Spotlight is a Tiger search feature and Spotlight and Dashboard are only available for and can be used with Tiger.

  • Something really strange with iMac G5 screen

My friend has an iMac G5, and he has a strange problem. He was trying to find a shortcut for something in Quark, he was hitting the command key and something else (he can't remember what) and suddenly, his 20" iMac screen doesn't fit the contents of the screen anymore. It's like the dock on the bottom is off the screen, ditto for the menu bar at the top and side to side. When you move the mouse, it shifts the whole screen left, right, up or down. Again, it's as though the contents of the screen are bigger than the 20" screen itself. I've checked resolution, and it's set to native; we've rebooted the computer, but the problem persists. I have no idea what's going on; can anyone please help?
    Thank you.

He might have turned on Zoom. If you look in System Preferences->Universal Access, you'll see the controls there. You can turn it on or off without having that Preference window open, though. Use ⌘-⎇-8 (Command-Option-8).

Hi there. I also bought an iWires mini Display port to HDMI cable and have an LG LED/LCD TV. I plugged it in to my MB Pro and followed the very small writing that came in the package and got both audio and video going. You need to change the audio settings from within System Preferences on your Mac to select your TV as the audio output.
My concern is the data latency - do you experience a delay between moving your mouse on the MBPro and the TV displaying the movement? It is only a fraction of a second, but certainly enough to be annoying, especially in a cable as expensive as the iWire.

I was working on a photo calendar on my macbook off the battery and the battery suddenly ran out. So it wasn't shut down properly. Now when I open i photo the coloured wheel just keeps spinning and I can't get into it. Everything else on the computer seems to work. I've done forced quit and restarted it a few times and also left it running.

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • Spotlight and indexing of other disk partitions

    Hi,
I have the internal drive of my 12" PowerBook formatted into two partitions, a small maintenance partition that's running 10.4.8, and a main partition, that's running 10.5.2. While I don't have a problem with upgrading the maintenance partition to Leopard, after seeing this report, I'm wondering if it's not a good idea to have Tiger and Leopard installed on separate partitions of the same internal drive. This leads to my questions:
    Question 1:
Is it true that booting into a Tiger installation will cause Spotlight to overwrite the index files that Leopard created on either (or both) partitions? If this is true, then it would seem that I should really upgrade the maintenance partition to Leopard to prevent complete reindexing whenever I switch startup drives from one partition to the other.
    Question 2:
Is there any way that I can tell Spotlight on the maintenance partition to not index the main partition? I only boot into the maintenance partition to run tools to maintain the main partition, so I have no need for Spotlight when booted into the maintenance partition.
    Question 3:
Even if I upgrade the maintenance partition to Leopard, is there any way that I can prevent each partition's installation from indexing the other?
    Thanks,
    Ken

I want to make sure that I have each partition's installation set up so Spotlight won't corrupt or redo what the other partition's Spotlight has already done.
You can't do that, which is why I ended up with the less than satisfactory solution I have. When you boot up Spotlight begins to run as part of the system activities. It then looks at every mounted drive. Each and every drive has an invisible Spotlight folder. In that folder are the instructions to Spotlight about whether the drive or any directories on the drive have been excluded from Spotlight, and also, if the drive is supposed to be indexed, then the indexes themselves are in that folder. Thus the command line instruction to turn Spotlight status on or off specifies the path to the particular drive. There is no way to "quarantine" the Tiger or Leopard Spotlight. Whichever version is running looks to see if any given drive is supposed to be indexed, and, if it is, indexes it. The two versions can read each others general instruction about whether or not something is supposed to BE indexed, but can't read each others actual indexes. So if the instruction is for indexing to be on, then the version of Spotlight running looks at the index, can't read the index from the other version, and so proceeds to create a new index.
You can either have Spotlight on or off for a particular drive, that information will be read by both versions of Spotlight and acted on accordingly. Thus I booted in Leopard, ran the command line to turn the status off on my Tiger drive, preventing the drive from being indexed in Leopard, and edited the /etc/hostconfig file for Tiger to disable the Tiger Spotlight. When I booted in Tiger Spotlight didn't run AT ALL, so it didn't re-do the indexing for either the Tiger or Leopard drive. As far as I've been able to figure out this is the best solution, since I am generally booted in Leopard.
If all I had done was to add the Tiger drive to the Leopard Privacy pane, when I booted in Tiger its Spotlight would run, consult the preference for its drive, see it wasn't supposed to index its own startup drive, look at the information on the Leopard drive, see that that drive was supposed to be indexed, be unable to read the index and create a new one. When I next booted into Leopard it would have to re-index its own drive because its index would have been over-written.
Hope that makes a nasty situation clearer. I pondered the conundrum for some time before coming up with a solution. When I am booted in Tiger (which is rarely) I have to remember to use EasyFind when I want to find something, and when I am in Leopard a search of the Tiger drive is "brute force" only, but it can be searched.

  • More Leopard Problems:  Spotlight and Screenshots

    Hello,
    1. When I first upgraded to Leopard, my screenshot utility worked (CMD-Shift-3/4). It has since stopped... any ideas? I see that at least two other people reported the same problem here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5749312&#5749312
But it was not resolved. Yes, I know there's a 'Grab' utility and I know there are a number of 3rd party apps. I just want this native feature to work.
    2. I've also noted that Spotlight has stopped working: I type something into the search window and there is no response at all. It's not that what I'm looking for cannot be found, it's that nothing happens. Now, I noted in this thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6051741&#6051741
That I could try forcing a re-index by listing the entire volume as private, then removing it. It worked the first time, but now Spotlight doesn't work again. Any suggestions?
Please let me know if you have any ideas. My last 3 questions have gone unanswered and I'm losing hope in the Apple forums...
    Thanks.

    Screenshots just quit.
I've been taking them off and on all day, didn't restart - just out of the Blue Too.
    Picture 1.png, etc.
G5 2.5x2, same thing happened on 10.4.x - just up and quit.
    Is it the FONT Police?
    Did I do a no-no?
    Shut off my screen grab?
I've done the obvious things to do, etc.
You "Experts", don't be so fast to answer - I'm no newbie, but I'm not Amit either ... check?
    Grab works fine.

  • Data and Dashboard Security using ROLES Variable in OBIEE 11g

    Hi all,
I'm currently using OBIEE 11g. I'm wondering how to implement the security for data and dashboard in the 11g.
Below is the sample of how the security matrix requirement when I use the 10g version. In 10g, we usually use GROUP (for the data filter in RPD) and WEBGROUPS (for dashboard objects) variables in my initialization block to read from database. As we have 2 different variables, it is possible to control security separately for data and dashboard.
    GROUP | Country
    G1 | US
    G2 | FR
    G3 | UK
    WEBGROUPS | Dashboard
    WG1 | D1
    WG2 | D1
    WG3 | D1
    WG1 | D2
    WG2 | D2
    WG1 | D3
    WG3 | D3
    WG3 | D4
Now, in 11g, the recommendation is to use ROLES variable (for application role). So, how would I apply the required security matrix above in 11g using just ROLES variable? Do I still create G1, G2, G3, WG1, WG2, and WG3 as application roles then only use G1-3 in the RPD to filter the data and only use WG1-3 in the analytics to serve as webgroups?
Any advice on this? Thank you very much.

    "...Could you elaborate more?"
I mean that role creation and user->role assignment will be managed outside of to the obiee interface - whether that's via the database, LDAP, fmw etc.
Webgroup creation and assignment is managed within the obiee interface and I think that has a lot of benefits - generally you have people responsible for shared folders and dashboard creation, so having them responsible for webgroups and presentation permissions is preferable for me.
"are you saying that I use the role G1-3 only in the RPD, while using the role WG1-3"
Yes .. I'm assuming you have something like
    G1 | US
    G2 | FR
    G3 | UK
    WG1 | Finance
    WG2 | Marketing
    WG3 | Sales
    Which becomes
    R1 | US
    R2 | FR
    R3 | UK
    R4 | Finance
    R5 | Marketing
    R6 | Sales
And John belongs to R1 and R4, Fred belongs to R2 and R4 etc. So you would set your data filters against R1-R3 and use R4-R6 like webgroups in the presentation services.
    Regards,
    Robert

  • Spotlight and iCal search not working after upgrade to Leopard

I recently upgraded my MBP to Leopard (10.5.7), and everything seemed fine. Except search in iCal wasn't working. I looked in forums and found a suggestion - renaming Calendar Cache in Home>>Library>>Calendars, then restarting iCal. iCal rebuilt the Calendar Cache (or looked like it was, progress bar and all), but search still wasn't working, failing to bring up events I was looking right at.
Then I tried to use Spotlight, and it didn't seem to be working either. I tried searching for Safari, and after a brief pause, Spotlight said "No Result Found." I confirmed Safari is in fact still on my MBP and working (opened from applications folder). After some more hunting on forums, I found a thread talking about how to force Spotlight to re-index, figuring that was at least Spotlight's problem. Here's the thread - http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=381832
I tried what it suggested, using the command line in Terminal, but Terminal just spat back "No Index." So now I'm stumped. Any ideas? I've already tried rebooting, to no effect, though I'll try it again tonight.

Well, thanks again for all the suggestions, but I sort of stumbled on the fix - which turned out to be upgrading MacFUSE. I had forgotten I installed that so I could read/write to my BootCamp Windows partition under Tiger, and a couple times when I would restart my computer I'd get an error message about MacFUSE (ironically, the error claimed my OS was out of date, but it was really MacFUSE that was out of date).
After I updated to the latest version of MacFUSE and restarted, Spotlight started indexing. Now it works just fine. Not sure if this is a known issue, but it seems that was most likely the problem.
Now I just have to figure out why the search feature in Calendar doesn't work... already tried rebuilding the Calendar Cache multiple times. Any ideas for that one?

  • Where are the canned reports and dashboards?

I assume I'm missing something obvious here. I'm walking through the installation guide for Informatica users, and that all seems to be working out. I've also done the configuration of the OBIEE repository and loaded that in, so I see the metadata and all the tables/joins etc. But I thought there were canned reports and dashboards included -- where are they? I don't see them mentioned in the documentation and figure there should be a more obvious way to find them than looking at all the directories in the installation...
So... can someone point me in the right direction?
    Thanks!

    Hi
The canned reports /dashboards are in the catalog. on the machine where you installed BI application, OracleBIData\web\catalog
you will find EnterpriseBusinessAnalytics.zip, then unzip this file and update the instanceconfig.xml and restart the presentation services.
    thx

  • Reports and Dashboards: Saving Structure

    Hello,
We are a very large organization preparing to launch OBIEE to our users.
Going forward, I was wondering if anyone had any advice for the structure of saving reports and dashboards?

    Nagireddy,
Thank you, but I have made my question to general.
What I am actually referring to is the simple naming and structure of subfolders within, say, shared folders.
We will have hundreds of differrent analysis and dashboards saved to shared folders.
What I am really looking for is any advice from someone who has been saving a lot of content, and could possibly pass along a few do's or don't on the matter.
The thought at the moment would be to save content in subfolders of the module by category.
    -Shared Folders:
         +Procument
         +HCM
         -FSCM:
              +Employee Expenses
              +AP Transactions
              +GL Balance Sheer
              +GL Budget and Expenses
              +GL Detail Transactions
Any ideas on how to keep reports and dashboards more organized would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Lance

  • How to document your star-schemas and dashboards?

    Hello practitioners,
We are new to OBIEE and started some weeks ago. We are a two-men team. One guy doing all the data design and the other for everything around Answers.
So it happens regularly that the other guy has to ask the one guy, about the exact definition and meaning of data-fields, he wants to use in Answers.
Being a real programmer the one guy only needs a proper, self-explainary field name as documentation, of course (or so he thought).
    Question:
What tools and methods do you use to document the star-schemas and dashboards?
Being the other guy, it is important, that I pick the correct fields, while on the other hand I do not want to disect a dashboard I built a while back, everytime somebody wants something simular, just to figure out what I actually did, back then...
    Thank you for your help

    Hi Turalf,
Have you looked at the OBIEE Metadata Dictionary ? A method to allow answers users to gain access to column definitions, and you can view the mapping from Presentation, through BMM to Physical layer.
Im pretty sure you can expose comments from the RPD into this also.
    http://obiee101.blogspot.com/2008/12/obiee-metadata-dictionary.html
Maybe you could look at the ODI - OBIEE data lineage also, it provides "report to source" mapping info :

    Hope this helps.

  • Why are Spotlight and Dictionary quitting immediately after being opened and queried?

Every since running an application named Mac Tuneup I have had problems with Spotlight and Dictionary.  For example, I open Spotlight, type in a query, the program runs, then quits unexpectedly.  The same is happening with Dictionary.  My suspicion is that Mac Tuneup removed something it shouldn't have, but I'm not sure what.  Any thoughts as to the best way of resolving this?

I believe the issue is resolved.  I had already installed the 10.6.8 combo update and did a reinstall from the Snow Leopard disc, but I think a cold start shook everything into place.  As to Mac Tuneup, I realized I'd made a big mistake in buying it as soon as it started running.  It's long gone.  Thanks again.

  • HT203066 Health App keeps resetting data and dashboard view

Health up on my iPhone 5s (iOS v8.1.2) keeps resetting the data and dashboard views:
    - when I enter data in the 'Me' tab (Birthdate, Sex, Blood type), the data keeps disappearing when opening the application again
    - adding a dashboard (i.e. 'Weight') the dashboard shows (with no values) and disappears again
    - adding a data point in any dashboard manually does not show.
Also - I am using MyFitness Pal & Withings Health App - no data is showing.
I recently re-installed the phone as new (couple of weeks ago), I re-installed the third party apps (and deleted all data when asked)
    Any hints, pointers?
    Thanks in advance

I'm having the exact same problem. I've even tried:
    1. Turn off all syncing by theirs-party sources.
    2. Delete all third-party apps that might sync data so that the Health App "Sources" list is empty
    3. Reset all settings on the phone.
    4. Reload third-party apps one by one
    5. Selectively turn on syncing by third-party apps and only sync categories I really want to see.
All to no avail. The Health App crashes constantly and when trying to input data into third-party apps, those apps will crash also.
I'm currently trying to sync data with:
    UP by Jawbone (UP24)
    Withings HealthMate (Withings WiFi scale)
    MyFitnessPal
    Runtastic
    Nike+

  • Pogo games and Dashboard problems?

Hi everyone.  I am having a problem ever since downloading Mountain Lion.  While playing Crossword Cove on Pogo I will switch to Dashboard dictionary and enter a word for it's definition, when I finally decide what the answer could be I am not able to type into the crossword box.  What am I doing wrong and how can I fix this?  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.

Try looking up your words using Spotlight and see if that works any better. It shows you the files with those words, but also runs them against the built-in dictionary.
Make sure you click in the entry box to get an insertion-point before you start typing. The first click just makes that window active -- the second click should give you the insertion-point.
