Spotlight and Find not working

Hi everyone
Apologies if I'm covering old ground here.
I don't use either Spotlight or Find very often, but discovered recently that neither now works. From other posts, I think this may have started when I installed the 4.11 software update. There are no new software updates available (ie I have already got the most recent Security Update, which seems to have helped in some other similar cases).
Spotlight just doesn't find anything. Finder's cog-symbol-thing spins for as long as I let it, with no result.
I have tried trashing the spotlight.plist file, and quitting the SystemUIServer process from within Activity Monitor. I have also rebuilt the disc using Disk Warrior. None of this helped.
I tried dragging the hard disc to the Privacy pane of Spotlight to force it to re-index, but nothing can be dragged to the Privacy pane.
All suggestions gratefully received.
Thanks, Peter

Thanks to everyone for their comments. There seem to be quite a few other threads detailing a variety of problems with Spotlight, but as yet I haven't found anything that helps.
Brief confusing addition: I just installed the recent iTunes update 7.6.1, and afterwards ran fsck just to see if everything was ok/no worse. When I rebooted, the little Spotlight icon at the top right had a pulsing white dot in the "magnifying lens". When I clicked on it, I got a drop down menu telling me that Spotlight was busy indexing, including a time bar that was apparently estimating how long this would take. Then it stopped, and all is exactly as it was previously, ie not working.
It could have been worse, I suppose - others seem to have got stuck in "permanently indexing" mode. I wish Apple would address this problem, but I'm not holding my breath - so any further ideas would be very welcome.
Thanks, Peter

  • Spotlight and finder not working after Yosemite upgrade

    Hi,
    I just upgrade to 10.10.1 from 10.8 on a Mid 2012 Retina macbook pro, 2.7Ghz i7, 16GB RAM, 750GB SSD drive.
Since upgrading spotlight and finder have stopped working.  When I first upgraded I noticed it worked very briefly and found some of my applications, but now nothing.  The only thing it does is find the definition of the word I am searching for,
    I have
gone in to sys pref > spotlight added and remove all folders and rebooted the machine
gone in to sys pref > spotlight > privacy tab and ensured no folders are in that pane
gone in to sys pref > spotlight > privacy tab and added "documents folder" closed sys prefs rebooted and then removed "documents" folder to try and trigger a re index
gone to terminal and typed "sudo mdutil -E /" which should erase and rebuild the index but i get the error back "Error: Index is already changing state.  Please try again in a moment"
gone to terminal and typed "sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.metadata.mds.plist" and then typed "sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.metadata.mds.plist"
go to disk utility and verified my disk which comes back as showing no errors
logged in as another user but spotlight and finder still not working
Any other ideas my laptop is useless for work if I can't find anything,
    Thanks

unfortunately I this is still not working, thanks for the link Eric i tried those options, but still the problem remains.
I can clear the cache and re index my mac, and while the system is re indexing spotlight works and I can find material during the reindex.  This is obviously limited to the files that have been indexed at the point of using spotlight.
Once indexing has finished if I go to spotlight and try to search for anything, there are no results only the dictionary appears.
At the moment I have to delete the index cache every morning to trigger a re index so I can work, this is terrible and the worst upgrade experience I have had with any OS mac or windows

  • Mac Safari and Finder not Working

    Hello,
I use MAC Book Pro Retina, OSX 10.9.5.
I was facing the add problem in safari. If I used to click anything a new tab used to open with the add. I used add block plug in but it didnt work. Then I thought of unsinstalling safari. So I went to application and deleted all the system files linked with safari. But as a consequence, my finder also stopped working, now I am not able to access any data in my Mac. When I restart my computer, as soon as the desktop loads, the cursor goes in wait, and it remains on wait forever. All the desktop files are not visible. Only browser ( chrome) and apps are working fine. I don't know how to resolve this issue. I want to get my safari back and also want my Finder to work fine. Please try to help me.

  • Scrolling in Mail and Finder not working reliably

In Mavericks on my 2009 iMac, using a Magic Mouse to scroll by gesture stops working in Finder and Mail.
The only way to get it to work again is to either restart the finder, or quit and restart Mail.
    Anyone else finding this issue?
    Bob

I have this issue regularly inside: Mail.app, Preview.app and Finder.app - It occurs independently of each app. (E.g. one may still allow scrolling while another is "frozen".)
Additionally Preview.app does not snap to pages correctly as per 10.8
The immediate work around is to manually click on the scroll handle and move it, this seems to restore the functionality. Additionally, sometimes a subtle visual glitch is present, with the scroll handle being moved slightly to the right. (As if it's stuck in this position.)

  • Spotlight and Contacts not working

Spotlight does not find most of my contacts after updgrading to 10.8. I have dragged my HD into Privacy and back (in System Prefs for Spotlight), re-indexed the HD multiple times, etc. Nothing works. Some contacts are found, most are not. Any advice????

    Hi Rob.
    Lets try this step.
Go to utilities folder located in Applications - Launch Disk Utility from Utilities folder - Select the volume Macintosh HD(From the left side of the Disk Utility window), then select "Repair Disk Permissions"(This will take about 5-10 minutes). See if that works.
    Else
Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
    Click the First Aid tab.
Select your Mac OS X volume(Macintosh HD).
Click Repair Disk (Only Repair Disk). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.
quit everything and restart the computer.
    revert back for clarifications.
    Cheers
    Gopal

  • Yosemite Very Slow, Spotlight and Mail not working.

Yosemite has brought my iMac mid-2010 to a crawl.
Try to delete mail in browser and instead of deleting, just jumps to a different email and selects it. Also, spotlight's not doing anything.  I type the name and it just sits there. No movement, no acknowledgement.

  • Time Machine and Finder not working

I have Mac OS 10.6.3. My internal harddrive is full but I cannot back up my data on external hard drive. I tried moving files to external drive using Finder but Finder never finish the transfer and hung. Finder works okay but hang up when dealing with external drive. I tried to force quit finder and relaunch. But on relaunch it is giving me error 10810 and says :"finder cannot be launched". I have to force Macbook shut down. I tried Time Machine but it also hang and I have to shut everything down.
I have bought bigger hard drive and used disk utility (restore) to clone my hard drive. But I won't get rid of this problem. I won't be able to back up my data by upgrading hard drive as it is clone of my old hard drive and will carry all problems forward.
any suggestions how I can get rid of this problem? I want to backup all my data and some applications too which I have paid for but lost installation CDs.

Does this means that I cannot retrieve any data form this disk. This is the only disk I have with all my data.
This is your backup disk, right? You still have the original data, on your +internal HD,+ don't you?
See the pink box in #A5. Those errors are some that +Disk Warrior+ can often repair. As it says, your only other option is to erase the disk and start over.
I will buy new external drive and try to back up with time machine. I have few questions
Ideally, you need one disk for Time Machine, another for a "clone." If it's large enough, you can put them in separate partitions on the same drive, but when it fails (and they all do, sooner or later), you risk losing both.
    1. Should I clone new drive (I haven't installed it yet) with my repaired internal drive before I install it.
That would be safest. Then you can boot up from it to be sure it's working ok. Run a +*Verify Disk+* on it, and use many of your apps to confirm that everything's ok before taking the old HD out.
    2. Is there any difference between using Disk utility or with Super Duper.
Yes. Use CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper. They're designed for this, and when/if necessary, you can run updates to them. With Disk Utility, you can only run a whole, new "clone."
    3. Should I partition new external hard drive I buy.
If you're going to use it for other things besides Time Machine backups, yes. See #3 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).

  • Missing desktop, and finder not working

My Macboook pro has gone haywire. There is nothing on my desktop, not even a menu bar, just the dock. With that I can open the few items that are listed. I can't open the trash. When I open an application the menu bar appears with only that item no clock or anyhting else that should be there. I can't shut down the computer from the blue apple. The only way I can see the hard drive is to open the mail and add an attachment, then it allows me to look, and add the attachment.
I added a new user, and tat works fine, but I don't how to get to my user account from there.
I am totally lost at this point. I have looked thru the topics, and seen many similar problems, but they were all able to actually do things with tere computers.
    HELP!!

Try running a 3rd party utility.............
    DiskWarrior
Highly recommended for *directory damage* repairs.
    TechTool Pro
    Multi-functional utility.
    Drive Genius Multi-functional utility.
You will need to make your own decision on which to purchase. Read up on them on their websites because each does something a little different.
You must use the versions that are compatible w/your OS system & keep the utilities updated to avoid damaging/harming/trashing your system.

Yes, all I can tell you is that Finder does not have that function in ML. Your system is "working as expected".

Hi. I have 3 different casemate hard cases and i have been experiencing same problem.

  • Spotlight shortcut does not work (ctrl + space)

Spotlight shortcut does not work. When I press ctrl + space, nothing happen. When I click on magnifier icon by mouse, everything work well.
In Spotlight configuration and also in keyboard shortcut configuration this shortcut is present and marked as active.
I've also tried to disable and enable back this shortcut but it still not work.

    Hello Zeleznypa,
For me, the default shortcut for Spotlight is Command - Space (not Control Space).
OS X Yosemite: Spotlight keyboard shortcuts
Open Spotlight to start a search  Command (⌘)-Space bar
Open a Finder window with the search field selected  Option-Command (⌘)-Space bar
I changed the shortcut in System Preferences to Control Space and it still worked with that.
Could you check your keyboard with the Keyboard Viewer?
OS X Yosemite: Use the Keyboard Viewer
    Take care,
    Nubz

  • Finder not working... I'm getting annoyed at Apple.

Hi. Long time Apple Fan, 5 years now, heavy computer user for 15 years.
I recently installed a Brother Fax/Scan/Copy machine on my iMac with Leopard. The software that comes with it gives me the option to scan into PDF in one small step. Easy. I love it. However, the software is weak in that it doesn't clearly show where the pdf's are by default saved. I've solved that problem for the Black and White scans, but for the color scans, because I do them so rarely, I've not taken the time to figure it out.
So last night, I was scanning my Passport because I'm getting a new one soon. In the process, every time a scan completes, it opens the file in preview with the .pdf file and the default file-naming convention of CCI00001.pdf, CCI00002.pdf, and so on sequentially. Well, thinking I could easily find the files later, I just closed the Preview window thinking I'd open them later.
Well, the only way I can find these files is under the 'File>Open Recent' in Preview. Problem is, I've opened a few files with Preview since these scans, so I think, I'll just go to finder and type in the file name. Well, Finder can't find them. The ONLY way I can get to the files is through 'Open Recent' in Preview. However, some of them are no longer recent, so 'poof' they've disappeared. So I thought, well, let me click 'save as' in Preview and that would open the folder they are in. Well, it did, but it opened it in a finder window that is not the usual finder window. I.e., I can't navigate away from the folder that the 'Save as' function in Preview opens. Well, I can, but it doesn't clearly show me where that folder is that it default opened. I use the drop down arrow to open the 'advanced' finder window or whatever, but there is no 'root structure' (for lack of a better comparison that you can find in Windows) the name of the folder happens to coincide with my 'user' folder, but it doesn't have the little 'user' icon that you normally see next to your user folder in finder. It's just a normal blue folder that happens to have the same name as my user folder. So, I thought, why don't I create a new folder with a peculiar name that I can search for in finder- I called it 'Baffle Me' ... keep in mind, this is within Preview, File>Save As...> not changing the directory that it defaults to even though it's the name of my home folder or whatever, and then adding a folder called 'Baffle Me'... I saved in that folder. Logic would conclude that I could do a search within Finder now for a folder called 'Baffle Me' and wala- I'd find the folder where all my .PDF scans are. Nada. I thought, well maybe OSX needs to take time to scan it again- I'll come back tomorrow. So I did. Nada. I'm at a lost here. How can a file be on my computer and Finder not find it??
Can someone tell me how to find these scans? Did they get thrown out because I just closed the Preview window instead of saving them and they were in some sort of 'temp' directory? That doesn't make sense though, because I can still go back in 'File>Open Recent...> in Preview and find them. I'm at a loss here, and I'm really getting annoyed.
Ideas? Thanks in advance for your responses.
    Hal

    {quote}Well, the only way I can find these files is under the 'File>Open Recent' in Preview.{quote}
Command click on the filename on the preview window and it will give you the path to the file... That is also a live path, so if you click on the folder that the file is in you will be taken to where the file is. Or click on the Sidebar button on the preview window and click on the gear/wheel on the bottom and select sort by path. It will then show the path under the file name...
You should also play with spotlight to see if you can figure out why it was not working for you. I was able to find pdf's by name as well as text within them... It should've found them really easy with the file names.
    {quote} I use the drop down arrow to open the 'advanced' finder window or whatever, but there is no 'root structure' (for lack of a better comparison that you can find in Windows){quote}
Click on the hard drive icon in the sidebar and you see the 'root structure'. The mac layout is no different than Windows...

I really need to setup a home network and need to use wireless.

    Hi coffee12345,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I have read your post on your wireless keyboard and mouse not working with your desktop, and I would be happy to help you! To begin, I need to ask you a few introductory questions:
What is the Product and Model Number of your desktop?
What version of Windows are you using?
Is this a recent issue, or has it been like this since day one?
Are you using a USB hub to connect your peripherals or is it directly plugged into the computer?
Please re-post with the necessary information, and I look forward to your reply!

  • Since I downloaded the upgraded software, my charger that came with my phone says "this cable or accessory is not certified and may not work reliably with this iphone"  It worked before but now it doesn't...I don't think I should have to buy a new one...

since I upgraded to the new operating system my charger no longer works...
It says"this cable or accessory is not certified and may not work reliably with this iPhone"

Try checking your cable socket/lightning cable for dirt, grime, pocket lint, etc. I could not find the solution to this issue myself and after much searching I found someone stating that cleaning this out helped them immensely.
After taking a wooden toothpick (making sure the phone was OFF first) and gently clearing out the edges and inside of the lightning socket this went away.) It is worth noting that I had a significant amount of dust or lint buildup along the edge rails which I think was causing the iphone to believe it was plugged into something when it was not.
Try it and see, ensure you are very careful and do not use any conductive tools to clean the area in question. Compressed air also does wonders here.
