Spotlight and InDesign files under 10.9

Hi,
in Mountain Lion, InDesign files (.indd) used to be sorted in the documents category and appeared on top of results ; in order to do it, I had moved the documents category on top of spotlight search result.
Since Mavericks, the .indd files show up in a "Other" category for which sorting is not available.
Would it be possible to resolve this ?

This setting is part of the print dialog and must be supported of the used print driver.
Scale to fit page will reduce scale if the PDF will not fit between the printer borders.
You can set the default behaviors in the PDF's document properties, where you can find some settings for printing, if the document is opened in Acrobat or Reader and if the printer driver support this property. If the PDF is opened in another viewer these settings are ignored.

  • Performance, minimum bandwidth, thumbnail previews for PDF and InDesign Files with web content viewer

    Hi,
    We are considering using DPS with a web content viewer for large PDFs and/or InDesign files. The client using a web viewer might have very limited bandwidth (some as low as 256Kbps). We ask:
    1 - How well does the web viewer perform with very large PDFs and InDesign files  (500 MB+) with limited bandwidth? Does the file stream in chunks and the PDF shows as soon as the first page or two are available, with the rest loading in the background, or does the entire file come down in one part and then shown?
    2 - Can PDF and InDesign files support thumbnail previews? For example, one image per PDF page and user can scroll forward and back.
    Your thoughts and comments are greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!
    -Stephen

    Hi Stephen,
    The way the web viewer works is that it converts the PDF/InDesign files to PNGs along with additional HTML assets. Assets are downloaded as they’re ready for a given page (e.g. first, page 1 is filled with its assets as they become available, then page 2, etc), so a reader wouldn’t need to wait for the entire article to load. The next few pages are also loaded in the background, so the reader wouldn’t be likely to notice lag as they flipped through pages to the next page after reading the current one. So the lag will depend on the size of an individual page.
    For your question around thumbnails, the web viewer does not load a preview image so the reader would need to wait for the assets I described above to load.
    Hope this helps...

  • Oracle Apps 12.03 and dbf file under $FND_TOP/secure

    Hi All,
    I have a question. Back to 11i, there was a .dbc file under $FND_TOP/secure. To generate it or edit, you could use jre oracle.apps.fnd.security.AdminAppServer with the parameters.
    For R12 (R12.0.3 with a 10.2.0.2 DB), the file should be under $INST_TOP/apps/fnd/12.0.0/secure right? In my case, I do not have the apps folder under $INST_TOP.
    Is R12 still using a dbc file and if so, where should it be and how can I regenerate it?
    Thank you,

    Hi Hsawwan,
    Thank you for the reply. I found the command and the parameters in the document suggested.
    Another quick question. From the document you suggested, the directory they us to save the file is $FND_TOP/secure. Shouldn't it be under $INST_TOP/appl/fnd/12.0.0/secure for R12?
    Thank you,

  • Placing Illustrator and InDesign Files, Importing text and forms into Library

    Firstly, is there any way at all to maintain the working elements of an Illustrator or Indesign file if placing in Muse, is it even possible?
    Example: I have a fully created website layout with text boxes and vector images saved in Illustrator.
    I'm wondering, can this be bumped to Muse using the 'Library' feature as a whole, as elements like the contact form were in the Katie's Cafe tutorial?
    I understand how that works for singular images, but is it at all possible with a complex image that contains both text and vector, or does this image need to be sliced up and saved as individual elements. Is there anyway to extract the text boxes from Illustrator or InDesign as they are? How are working text boxes created in InDesign as mentioned in the Katie's Cafe tutorial?
    Thanks so much in advance, and sorry if this is totally obvious!

    Hm, okay.
    How would I know if the file is corrupt?
    Well, you often don't, until it crashes and is unrecoverable. Then it's too late. But "insanely swollen file size" is a symptom. However, I can't know if your file size is reasonable or not, depends on the content, and it sounds like your content is pretty heavyweight. For instance - I thought it was possilbe to strip out custom brushes when saving AI files to bring file size down. I've never touched an AI file that was too large because of the number of swatches. So, depending on how much you have in there, then maybe your two-gig file isn't on the verge of crashing and burning.
    I did inherit it, but have since used it as a template and "saved as" various versions. I'm not really sure if it started in 5 or not.
    Cool trick: Click on Help, then hold down Control when you click on About. This will take you to a "Component Information" screen, and in the lower-left-hand corner you can see the Document History. So you can learn if you inherited a file that started in CS5. Or in CS3, or in PageMaker.
    General best-practices as recommended by forum regulars is to finish a file in the format in which it started. If a file has to be moved from an older version to a newer version, then exporting IDML or INX before moving is advised. This is because of a lot of anecdotal evidence that opening up old files in newer versions and then doing a bunch of work is correlated with file corruption.
    I have not tried to export-to-IDML-and-reopen, but I certainly will. What does this do exactly?
    Well, it'll do a bunch of different things. It'll reinterpret the file format, which can strip out corruption. It'll strip out all image previews. If there is cruft in your file, then this will probably remove it.

  • InCopy and InDesign files viewing differently

    I am currently running a project to change a magazine publisher from a Quark platform to an InDesign and InCopy workflow. One problem that keeps occuring is that when an editor manually alters the paragraph style to make the copy fit in InCopy, (ie, altering the tracking and/or leading), this change does not show when the same file is opened in InDesign.
    For example, a heading that an editor has reduced tracking -5% to make fit into one line in the InCopy file, will still look like two lines when the InDesign file is opened. This is particularly dangerous for pages of text, as we keep losing lines from the bottom of the page and this can be easy to miss during output for press.
    I've checked, and all staff are following workflow, and updating assignments - so it's not human error (as far as I can see).
    Is this happening to anyone else? And is there a fix for it? The only one I can think of is to add more paragraph styles with different trackings etc, but this is not ideal and does not cover all the variables.
    We are using CS4, and the Snow Leopard platform – Please help!

    As an update to this, I have found what I believe is the cause, and, hopefully a fix, to this problem.
    The cause seems to be that in the original Quark template, the font has a horizontal scale setting of 95%. When the template is converted to InDesign, everything looks fine. However, the font doesn't seem to be recognised as a true font, and this has resulted in the word and character spacing looking completely different between InCopy and InDesign. This has been causing problems such as;
    1. Headings showing in one line in InCopy but flowing onto two lines in the InDesign file
    2. Body text showing completely different spacing throughout - causing uneven window and orphans and resulting in paragraphs being in different places in the InDesign and the InCopy files. This has made it impossible for the editors to fit copy on page.
    Note that any written changes by the editor (ie, change to the words) has worked fine.
    The fix seems to be to go back to the original template in Quark, and make sure all the font/text settings in the paragraph and character styles are set at 100%. Then make the template conversion again. I have run some testing this afternoon, and everything seems to be running ok now - touch wood!
    Thought I'd send an update anyway in case anyone has the same problem.

  • Spotlight and pref files and trash

    In Tiger, serchin' with spotlight, results including files in trash, in preferences folder etc., and these is usefull to deleting application (with prefs, files in application support etc.).
    In Leopard, spotlight find only the application and nothing else, no prefs, no .dmg trashed in advance, nothing else.
    What do i have to do to have back an usefull spotlight?
    Thanks in advance

    Use CMD+F, click Kind, select System Files, click don't include button, and select include. Put a search term in. Save the search and use it any time you want to search everywhere. Alternatively, customize it and you can use it to replace the default_smart.plist buried in the Finder.app for all your searches. • Spotlight and RAW files

    I need to find on my disks all the raw files with shoting date greater (=> ) of november 7th 2006. How is it possible? i have read that spotlight can use the exif data but.... i need help.
    thanks
    marco

    Afraid mine doesn't have that information in the metadata, therefore it is not indexed by Spotlight. To see exactly which EXIF data has made it into the metadata for the file you can use Terminal. Launch Terminal from your Utilities folder, then type this:
    mdls
    a space, and drag the file into the Terminal window and drop it. You will see all the metadata entries for that file. It will look something like this:
    NoobiX:~ francine$ mdls /Users/francine/Pictures/CRWs/CRW_2815.CRW
    kMDItemContentCreationDate = 2007-03-14 14:26:56 -0700
    kMDItemContentModificationDate = 2007-03-14 14:26:56 -0700
    kMDItemContentType = "com.canon.crw-raw-image"
    kMDItemContentTypeTree = (
    "com.canon.crw-raw-image",
    "public.camera-raw-image",
    "public.image",
    "public.data",
    "public.item",
    "public.content"
    kMDItemDisplayName = "CRW_2815.CRW"
    kMDItemFinderComment = "width/height: 2592 x 1944 "
    and so on. If there is no entry for focal length, then you are out of luck. My camera's raw format is not supported in Leopard, so the raw file entries are pretty general. With jpegs the metadata includes Aperture and FNumber and FocalLength. You can only search for things that are included in the metadata.

  • Spotlight and mp4 files

    Hey, I have a bunch of videos that are mp4 files. They have tags. I'd like to be able to search on those tags. The problem it seems is that Spotlight doesn't index mp4s... which is weird, since its a common format, and clearly spotlight was designed to search movies. There are even movie specific spotlight attributes...
    Anyone know a way to have spotlight index mp4 meta-data?
    Thanks

    I have the same issue, I do not get a result, and I am looking at the file. Not sure what's going on. It used to work, prior to the upgrade to Snow Leopard.

  • Spotlight and Markdown Files

    Hello,
    I run a few websites and as a result have a large amount of files that end in .markdown. I've recently noticed that spotlight does not index these files. Is there anyway to tell spotlight to index their content? They are really only txt files, but end in .markdown so that textmate knows what to do with them.
    Thank you in advance for any help,

  • Spotlight and FAT32 file system

    Does someone know if it is possible to tell Spotlight to index a partition containing a FAT32 file system like the one that can be set up for BootCamp ?
    TIA

    Well, the command is accepted and says the indexing has been turned on on the volume and it WORKS.
    The volume status does not seem to survive a reboot though. I am just wondering whether my question has a sense : perhaps indexing and search were already working on that volume but I had never noticed nor thought of using it.
    What I can tell is that the CPU didn't seem busy after I "turned" indexing on whereas it skyrocketed for a few tens of minutes on initial indexing of my drive.
    Thanks to you all anyway.

  • Can't open PPT and InDesign files, receive this message

    Receiving this message:Powerpoint cannot open this type of file represented by Macintosh HD:users:....

    I think I understand what the issue is now. In the December 2009 issue of Macworld there was an article on page 22 called "Snow Leopard Switches the Double-Click." In that article it goes on to explain what I believe is the issue you are having and some solutions. Normally I would have sent you a link to the article so you could read it yourself however for some reason MW didn't tag this article so the only way I know you can get it is by getting your hands on a hard copy of that issue. You can try your local library and see if they subscribe, that would be a good shot or you can contact Macworld on how to order past issues.
    In short the article says there are some solutions:
    1. You could select one of the files then press Command I to open the Get Info window; in the Open With section, you could select a preferred application and click Change All.
    or
    2. You could Control-click a file in question, hold down the Option key, select Always Open With and choose an application from the list of alternatives.
    The article goes on to explain he wasn't pleased Apple made this change in SL so I would recommend you contact Apple at http://www.apple.com/feedback/ and comment as well.

  • IBookAuthor supports importing PDF and indesign files?

    Hi  everyone!
    There is any possibities to import a PDF or Indesign application in the iBookAuthor to re-edit and we add interactivity widget. Also we can get the Actual view as per the source.
    Thanks,
    Muzammil

    Not directly, no, sorry.
    iBA allows 'Insert' of WORD or Pages Chapters.
    Other content would require text copy from the source and paste into an existing iBA template with rework as required for matching original layouts.

  • Applescript and InDesign: Packaging/exporting -- can you help?

    I found and tweaked a droplet script that isn't quite working right. I tried and failed to learn to do this myself. Any help is greatly appreciated! This is for InDesign CS6 -- you don't really need to know InDesign in order to help (at least I don't think so).
    For the moment, I simply drag multiple InDesign files (for this example, "filename1.indd" and "filename2.indd") onto the droplet. InDesign packages them separately and outputs PDFs into each output folder. The problem is that it's creating too many folders and not putting things where I want.
    Another thing: when InDesign packages a file, it creates a "Instructions.txt" file for each package that I need deleted. I'd really like this added to the script as well. Is it possible?
    Current output (messy!)
    Desired output (perfect!)
    "exports" folder

    Easy enough. Note that I've moved things around a little to make a nicer flow:
