Spotlight and remote files/shares

Hello,
I'm new to Mac (Just arrived yesterday).
I would like to have spotlight search remote drives for files, folders, etc.
Is there a way to do this?
Thanks

Use CMD+F, click Kind, select System Files, click don't include button, and select include. Put a search term in. Save the search and use it any time you want to search everywhere. Alternatively, customize it and you can use it to replace the default_smart.plist buried in the Finder.app for all your searches. See http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20050501162147222 for the details.

  • Using old version CS3. Can't "see" both Local and Remote files. Only Local.

    Used to see both Local and Remote files. Worked in Local and then "Put" to the Remote when ready. Only see Local now. Work in Local is saved automatically to the server. Need to go back to the work in Local and Put to Remote. What happened? How do we fix it? Thanks!

    Could you post a screen shot of what you're seeing when you go to...
    Site > Manage Sites > Click the site  you're working on > Edit
    There should be two tabs in the upper left corner of the dialogue box that comes up, Basic and Advanced. Basic walks you through set-up with a bunch of questions and Advanced allows you to just enter the info into the correct fields. If the Advanced tab is open, it should be under the Remote heading where you set your FTP info.

  • How to create and use file share in linux

    Hi,
    I just started trying out Azure, I have 2 linux ubuntu instances. I would like to create a File share to use as a type of NAS and mount it on both of the instances.
    How can I go about doing that? Is there a tutorial?
    thanks

    Hi,
    We can use Azure File services to do this, for more information, please have a look at this article:
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/windowsazurestorage/archive/2014/05/12/introducing-microsoft-azure-file-service.aspx. The Azure File service exposes file shares using the standard SMB 2.1 protocol. Applications running in Azure can now easily share files between
    VMs using standard and familiar file system APIs like ReadFile and WriteFile.

  • CS3: Viewing local and remote files simultaneously

    A friend recently purchased a new computer. On her previous PC, she could expand the Files view in Dreamweaver (v9) CS3 and see a split screen -- local files on one side, remote files on the other.
    She removed CS3 from her old machine and installed (from the same disks) on her new machine. Now, she cannot see the local/remote split screen.
    She can expand the Files tab (F8) to fill the screen - but that doesn't help. She checked, and her FTP settings are correct and connect properly.
    I know it's possible to do this is CS3 - I've seen her do it and I always worked in this view going back to Dreamweaver 4 - but the option to see local/remote seems to be gone!
    Any suggestions on how to fix this would be appreciated.

    Assuming you have properly defined both local and remote site settings -- Sites > Manage Sites....
    Your files panel  may be too narrow to see it.  Open it up wide, notice the icon at far right for "Expand / Collapse?"

  • SL and SMB file shares gives 'file already in use' errors

    Hi all,
    I'm posting a question which has been asked here before but not answered.
    We have several Mac users accessing files on a SMB share running on a Windows 2003 Server.
    Everything worked fine for years until they upgraded to Snow Leopard, then they started experiencing errors when saving changes to an already-created file; they are thrown the error "Could not save <filename> because the file is already in use or was left open" - however it is clearly not open and nobody else has accessed it from the share.
    There seems to be a lot of allusions made to this problem and I've seen hints that it was supposed to have been fixed in 10.6.3 - but we're still experiencing it and it's driving our users nuts!
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    I have similar problems with my new MacPros loaded with SL 10.6.4. Every time when the next network user want to open the file the 1st user opened (closed already), it keeps saying the file is in use.

  • Io.File and remote files

    Hi. I use the next code so I can get the files inside a Windows-shared folder. I allow write/read when I share the folder in my network. This is the code:
    File root=new File("//HostName/sharedFolder");
    FileFilter fileFilter = new FileFilter() {
    public boolean accept(File file) {
    return file.isDirectory();}
    File[] files = root.listFiles(fileFilter);
    then I get names from the files array... everyting goes well with a network computer without a access password, but when it has a password for log on, I get the name of the folder, but the listFiles throws a nullpointer... How can I get this work? any suggestion? thanks!!!!!!!!!

    1. You can fine the trace in the udump folder ... you can check the file time stamp to check when you created the file as it may be possible that here are other user trace files too
    $ sqlplus / as sysdba
    SQL> alter database backup controlfile to trace;
    Database altered.
    SQL> show parameter USER_DUMP_DEST
    NAME TYPE VALUE
    user_dump_dest string /PROD/udump
    SQL> exit
    $ cd /PROD/udump
    $ mv PROD_ora_30823.trc cr_ctl.sql
    $ vi cr_ctl.sql
    edit the control file script
    Now you have a new control file script to re-create your control file.
    2. You can edit the same and execute at nomount stage to generate new controlfiles ... remember controlfiles should be removed before creating the new ones

  • What happened to Active Directory and Windows file shares?

    Hello all,
    i have a few questiona about the integration in active directory. I recently updated to Lion (most certainly without proper risk analysis on the consequences...)
    First:
    How can one connect to a windows share?
    If trying in finder and CMD+k "smb://server/share" a message appears stating i have insufficient rights.
    Great, in Snow Leopard one was presented a credentials window, where is it gone? (as most macbook users wont join the domain completely...)
    Next try: "smb://DOMAIN;User@server/share" same result...
    Second:
    Is there any support for DFS (Distributed File System) included in Lion? This would be _very_ much appreciated!
    Thanks for your help (hopefully)

    Hi JFlynn12,
    Are you using fully qualified DNS name for the server?
    ie:
    if your realm is domain.company.com then your FQD for the server would typically be server.company.com. or server.domain.company.com . this is of corse assuming your DNS is properly set for the DNS / DHCP server. x.x.x.x => server.company.com and server.company.com => x.x.x.x .
    With that in mind you would expect smb://server.company.com or smb://server.domain.company.com
    give it a try, let me know if it works.

  • Spotlight and InDesign files under 10.9

    Hi,
    in Mountain Lion, InDesign files (.indd) used to be sorted in the documents category and appeared on top of results ; in order to do it, I had moved the documents category on top of spotlight search result.
    Since Mavericks, the .indd files show up in a "Other" category for which sorting is not available.
    Would it be possible to resolve this ?

    This setting is part of the print dialog and must be supported of the used print driver.
    Scale to fit page will reduce scale if the PDF will not fit between the printer borders.
    You can set the default behaviors in the PDF's document properties, where you can find some settings for printing, if the document is opened in Acrobat or Reader and if the printer driver support this property. If the PDF is opened in another viewer these settings are ignored.

  • Spotlight and RAW files

    I need to find on my disks all the raw files with shoting date greater (=> ) of november 7th 2006. How is it possible? i have read that spotlight can use the exif data but.... i need help.
    thanks
    marco

    Afraid mine doesn't have that information in the metadata, therefore it is not indexed by Spotlight. To see exactly which EXIF data has made it into the metadata for the file you can use Terminal. Launch Terminal from your Utilities folder, then type this:
    mdls
    a space, and drag the file into the Terminal window and drop it. You will see all the metadata entries for that file. It will look something like this:
    NoobiX:~ francine$ mdls /Users/francine/Pictures/CRWs/CRW_2815.CRW
    kMDItemContentCreationDate = 2007-03-14 14:26:56 -0700
    kMDItemContentModificationDate = 2007-03-14 14:26:56 -0700
    kMDItemContentType = "com.canon.crw-raw-image"
    kMDItemContentTypeTree = (
    "com.canon.crw-raw-image",
    "public.camera-raw-image",
    "public.image",
    "public.data",
    "public.item",
    "public.content"
    kMDItemDisplayName = "CRW_2815.CRW"
    kMDItemFinderComment = "width/height: 2592 x 1944 "
    and so on. If there is no entry for focal length, then you are out of luck. My camera's raw format is not supported in Leopard, so the raw file entries are pretty general. With jpegs the metadata includes Aperture and FNumber and FocalLength. You can only search for things that are included in the metadata.

  • Spotlight and mp4 files

    Hey, I have a bunch of videos that are mp4 files. They have tags. I'd like to be able to search on those tags. The problem it seems is that Spotlight doesn't index mp4s... which is weird, since its a common format, and clearly spotlight was designed to search movies. There are even movie specific spotlight attributes...
    Anyone know a way to have spotlight index mp4 meta-data?
    Thanks

    I have the same issue, I do not get a result, and I am looking at the file. Not sure what's going on. It used to work, prior to the upgrade to Snow Leopard.

  • Spotlight and Markdown Files

    Hello,
    I run a few websites and as a result have a large amount of files that end in .markdown. I've recently noticed that spotlight does not index these files. Is there anyway to tell spotlight to index their content? They are really only txt files, but end in .markdown so that textmate knows what to do with them.
    Thank you in advance for any help,

  • Spotlight and FAT32 file system

    Does someone know if it is possible to tell Spotlight to index a partition containing a FAT32 file system like the one that can be set up for BootCamp ?
    TIA

    Well, the command is accepted and says the indexing has been turned on on the volume and it WORKS.
    The volume status does not seem to survive a reboot though. I am just wondering whether my question has a sense : perhaps indexing and search were already working on that volume but I had never noticed nor thought of using it.
    What I can tell is that the CPU didn't seem busy after I "turned" indexing on whereas it skyrocketed for a few tens of minutes on initial indexing of my drive.
    Thanks to you all anyway.

  • Express and Remote Files

    I am looking for a way (within Express) to get a file that is not local to the box that Express is on. I know I could write a shell script to FTP the file, but has anyone ever accomplished this with Express 4GL?
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    You can call external (system) commands from Express 4GL, including shell scripts.

  • Sync center issue in Windows 7: sync conflict zeroing out remote file

    Hi,
    I'm using Windows 7 RTM Prof Eng x64 on my laptop, and I'm making available offline a folder on a remote share with Offline files. The remote share is hosted on a Windows Server 2003 R2 Ent Eng x86 server. The server is a domain controller, but the laptop is not joined to the domain. The remote folder is like 320 MB, mainly images, doc, pdf and xls files.
    Synching is usually working, but sometimes I observe the following: I modify a file on my machine, and later Sync center reports a sync conflict, although nobody else modified the remote file. When I check the remote file, it is full with NULLS, e.g. if it is a doc file, it opens as a lot of empty pages.
    I used the same setup with Windows Vista without problems, it just started to occur when I switched to Win 7.
    I could not reproduce the issue, but the problem could be related to the network setting:
    - it is something like: laptop ---|public network|--- server ---|private network|
    - I usually access the server from the laptop on a public network with just its netbios name, i.e. \\server. But from this network it is also accessible from \\server.domain.com and \\server-public-ip The small sync icon appears near the folder name only when I view it as \\server, and not in the other two cases.
    - when I connect to with WLAN, then the laptop is connected to the private network. Here the server is accessible via \\server-private-ip or \\server.domain2.local. When I open \\server only the offline folder is visible (the server is also a firewall, which blocks SMB going out to the public network).
    - the clocks of the two machines are not synchronized, but the difference is below 10 seconds
    I could understand a sync conflict or not detecting that the local and remote file are the same, but the zeroing out the remote file part is quite mysterious. Have anyone seen something like that?
    Thanks for the help,
    Zoltan

    Hi,
    Did you find a solution to this issue? We are experiencing the same.
    We have had users reporting that they have created a word doc whilst on the network. Saved it, then logged off and taken their laptops home. Worked on the file for a few hours, with several saves, closes and reedits. Then finally saved the file, logged off.
    When returning to work and logging in whilst connected to the network the file then becomes 0KB. The file appears to be unrecoverable as backups are only of the server version. There is no previous versions recorded and the last edited is the data of the
    original blank file. It would appear that the server version (Older) is overwriting the Local cached version (Newer).
    This is obviously causing some serious issues for staff who have lost hours of work done at home. Has anyone else experienced this.
    Servers run Windows 2008 R2, Clients Windows 7 Professional. Offline Files setup by Group Policy.

    Fraser
