Spotlight and VmWare

Spotlight keeps indexing the hard disk and slows down the computer expecially when vmware is running. I've already reindexed the hard disk and put the  "Virtual Machines" folder in the "Privacy" list of Spotlight system preferencies.

Try a "full reset" of Time Machine, per #A4 in the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
If that doesn't help, do a +*Repair Disk+* (not permissions) on your internal HD, per the yellow box in #A5 there.

    Log in to your account, and move all your files to your home folder. No other users should be able to access them there and they won't show up with a Spotlight search.
    Make sure your kids' account(s) do not have admin privileges.

    Background:
    I am using Mountain Lion and Mail App and running out of space on my small primary SSD drive (where I keep OS, apps, key user preferences/data and mail for speed). The mail data is the big variable (many GBs) and I want to "archive"/move some of the old mail to my 2nd drive inside the Mac. But I still want it searchable inside spotlight and preferably even inside Mail too. And I'd like to be able to still drag and drop old mails into this archive folder.
    What I've tried that seems to work:

    1. Move the archive folder/mailbox to the 2nd drive/partition/folder (don't delete anything inside Mail App)
    2. Create a symbolic link from its new location to the original/old location
    This seems to work, it looks as "normal" and as if nothing happened inside Mail App but the folder now resides elsewhere and seems searchable etc. But I'm not sure that once caches refresh or over time with updates etc if stuff will break horribly or corrupt.
    Is that the right way to "archive" mails in Mail App to another internal drive/partition to save space but still have it searchable in spotlight and visible, searchable, draggable in Mail App?

    I'm having a similar but slightly different problem. My company just migrated to Gmail, and it's saving mail drafts every 30 seconds into my Trash folder.
    I unchecked the "Show in IMAP" preference in the Gmail settings, but my Drafts folder completely disappeared. I went back and checked it and the folder reappeared (with my drafts still in there).
    I like the idea if starting an email on my laptop and having the option of finishing it on my iPhone or iPad, so only saving Drafts locally would not be ideal.

  • Spotlight and indexing of other disk partitions

    Hi,
    I have the internal drive of my 12" PowerBook formatted into two partitions, a small maintenance partition that's running 10.4.8, and a main partition, that's running 10.5.2. While I don't have a problem with upgrading the maintenance partition to Leopard, after seeing this report, I'm wondering if it's not a good idea to have Tiger and Leopard installed on separate partitions of the same internal drive. This leads to my questions:
    Question 1:
    Is it true that booting into a Tiger installation will cause Spotlight to overwrite the index files that Leopard created on either (or both) partitions? If this is true, then it would seem that I should really upgrade the maintenance partition to Leopard to prevent complete reindexing whenever I switch startup drives from one partition to the other.
    Question 2:
    Is there any way that I can tell Spotlight on the maintenance partition to not index the main partition? I only boot into the maintenance partition to run tools to maintain the main partition, so I have no need for Spotlight when booted into the maintenance partition.
    Question 3:
    Even if I upgrade the maintenance partition to Leopard, is there any way that I can prevent each partition's installation from indexing the other?

    I want to make sure that I have each partition's installation set up so Spotlight won't corrupt or redo what the other partition's Spotlight has already done.
    You can't do that, which is why I ended up with the less than satisfactory solution I have. When you boot up Spotlight begins to run as part of the system activities. It then looks at every mounted drive. Each and every drive has an invisible Spotlight folder. In that folder are the instructions to Spotlight about whether the drive or any directories on the drive have been excluded from Spotlight, and also, if the drive is supposed to be indexed, then the indexes themselves are in that folder. Thus the command line instruction to turn Spotlight status on or off specifies the path to the particular drive. There is no way to "quarantine" the Tiger or Leopard Spotlight. Whichever version is running looks to see if any given drive is supposed to be indexed, and, if it is, indexes it. The two versions can read each others general instruction about whether or not something is supposed to BE indexed, but can't read each others actual indexes. So if the instruction is for indexing to be on, then the version of Spotlight running looks at the index, can't read the index from the other version, and so proceeds to create a new index.
    You can either have Spotlight on or off for a particular drive, that information will be read by both versions of Spotlight and acted on accordingly. Thus I booted in Leopard, ran the command line to turn the status off on my Tiger drive, preventing the drive from being indexed in Leopard, and edited the /etc/hostconfig file for Tiger to disable the Tiger Spotlight. When I booted in Tiger Spotlight didn't run AT ALL, so it didn't re-do the indexing for either the Tiger or Leopard drive. As far as I've been able to figure out this is the best solution, since I am generally booted in Leopard.
    If all I had done was to add the Tiger drive to the Leopard Privacy pane, when I booted in Tiger its Spotlight would run, consult the preference for its drive, see it wasn't supposed to index its own startup drive, look at the information on the Leopard drive, see that that drive was supposed to be indexed, be unable to read the index and create a new one. When I next booted into Leopard it would have to re-index its own drive because its index would have been over-written.
    Hope that makes a nasty situation clearer. I pondered the conundrum for some time before coming up with a solution. When I am booted in Tiger (which is rarely) I have to remember to use EasyFind when I want to find something, and when I am in Leopard a search of the Tiger drive is "brute force" only, but it can be searched.

  • Bootcamp and VMWare Fusion, possible problem with Bootcamp, cant see USB.

    Would really appreciate your help. So I have MBP mid 2010 with the latest version of OSX Mountain Lion and decided to install Windows 7 on it. I gave it to the professional IT guy, who installed Windows 7 through the latest version of VMWare Fusion. It is not bad overall, but at times incredible slow (which might be because of my slow processor).
    So I decided to install Windows 7 through the BootCamp Assistant - USB way. And did the following steps:
    1)Format USB, put Windows 7 .iso image on it
    2) Installed the latest Windows software through the Bootcamp (step2 tick). However, it said that the latest version would be installed only after Windows 7 is installed (in step3 tick). I clicked OK and moved to Step 3
    3) I started Installing Windows and had a few errors (which were solved by repairing the HDD after rebooting in recovery mode), but all went fine until almost the end. Before the bar almost moved to the end my macbook went to reboot and I though it was all done and ready. I clicked the alt at *ding* sound and no USB was detected.
    I checked disk utility and the thing was portioned.
    I was thinking that MBP doesn't recognize the second Windows installed, and VMWare Fusion needs to be deleted in order to run Bootcamp. I haven't deleted anything, wanted to ask for advice first.
    Any one could think of what's wrong? Thank you.

    You can only install Windows from a USB in one of these computers:
    - MacBook Pro with Retina display.
    - MacBook Air.
    - Mac mini (Mid 2010 and newer).
    - iMac (Late 2012).
    Your Mac doesn't support the Windows installation through a USB drive. However, you have installed Windows through a USB drive. What did you do?
    You did an EFI installation (or a native installation). Apple doesn't support this option because of the huge number of problems it gives, and you have probably erased OS X (or you erased the Windows partition that Boot Camp created, both possibilities). The error you mentioned in 3) was probably that the Windows installer detected that you have a MBR disk instead of a GPT one, and you erased everything.
    First of all, to make sure that you erased everything, hold the Option (Alt) key while your Mac is starting. If you see the OS X partition, start up from it, and make a complete backup of your files with Time Machine.
    Then, what I recommend you is to erase the whole drive by starting in Internet Recovery (hold Command, Option and R keys while your Mac is starting), and use the Time Machine option to restore your files

    Following actions taken for troubleshooting
    SMC reset - by unplugging all cables over couples minutes, as well as CommandOption+PR key at boot time
    Repairing Permission on the Macintosh HD drive, rebooted after and didn't work
    Not user account specific, tried different account and the same problem persists

    Sorry you are still having problems even after trying the good suggestions from Ralph and Boomer.
    I did not see specifically from your posts that your iSight worked before upgrading to Snow Leopard, but I am inferring from your topic's title that it did. If your iMac came with Snow Leopard installed, please post and tell us whether you erased the disk and reinstalled all your iMac's software before you started using it. If you upgraded your iMac to Snow Leopard, consider the following.
    (1) Until you get iSight working, do all your testing while no peripherals other than keyboard/mouse are attached to your iMac. To eliminate all possibility of any conflict external to your Mac, be sure you also disconnect any wireless devices (iPod, printer, etc) connected to your system.
    (2) If you still have problems with all you have tried, it seems to me that you must have a software issue. You might try uninstalling Skype and VMWare and testing again to see if those installations are causing a conflict.
    (3) Check the support sites for all of your third party software to be sure there are no known Snow Leopard issues and that you are using the latest compatible versions.
    (4) If the problem still exists and you have not already tried this, reinstall Snow Leopard, repairing permissions immediately before and after the reinstall.
    (5) If your problem remains and System Profiler still shows your inbuilt iSight as a USB device, I suggest you backup all important files, erase your disk, reinstall all Apple software, and test to see if iSight works properly. Once it does, you can install any necessary peripherals and third-party apps one-at-a-time, testing after each addition to see if one of them is causing problems.

    Reinstall on both.
    Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
    Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
    When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
    Reinstall Mountain Lion or Mavericks
    OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
    OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
    OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
         Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
                     if possible because it isthree times faster than wireless.
    Restore your iPhone to reinstall iOS. Be sure to do this while connected to your computer and iTunes.
         Tap Settings > General > Reset > Erase all content and settings.

  • Spotlight and iCal search not working after upgrade to Leopard

    I recently upgraded my MBP to Leopard (10.5.7), and everything seemed fine. Except search in iCal wasn't working. I looked in forums and found a suggestion - renaming Calendar Cache in Home>>Library>>Calendars, then restarting iCal. iCal rebuilt the Calendar Cache (or looked like it was, progress bar and all), but search still wasn't working, failing to bring up events I was looking right at.
    Then I tried to use Spotlight, and it didn't seem to be working either. I tried searching for Safari, and after a brief pause, Spotlight said "No Result Found." I confirmed Safari is in fact still on my MBP and working (opened from applications folder). After some more hunting on forums, I found a thread talking about how to force Spotlight to re-index, figuring that was at least Spotlight's problem.     I tried what it suggested, using the command line in Terminal, but Terminal just spat back "No Index." So now I'm stumped. Any ideas? I've already tried rebooting, to no effect, though I'll try it again tonight.

    Well, thanks again for all the suggestions, but I sort of stumbled on the fix - which turned out to be upgrading MacFUSE. I had forgotten I installed that so I could read/write to my BootCamp Windows partition under Tiger, and a couple times when I would restart my computer I'd get an error message about MacFUSE (ironically, the error claimed my OS was out of date, but it was really MacFUSE that was out of date).
    After I updated to the latest version of MacFUSE and restarted, Spotlight started indexing. Now it works just fine. Not sure if this is a known issue, but it seems that was most likely the problem.
    Now I just have to figure out why the search feature in Calendar doesn't work... already tried rebuilding the Calendar Cache multiple times. Any ideas for that one?

    You can always deauthorize all your machines from your store account page — just log in and view your account settings and there's a button to deauth all your machines. Which just means for the other machines, it will ask you for your store ID / password the next time you play a purchased song.
    So, let's try the filter experiment.
    On the start menu, click on "run". in the space it provides enter "regedit" without the quotes. This will open the registry editor.
    Find the heading HKEYLOCALMACHINE. Click on it.
    Find the heading SYSTEM inside it. Click on it.
    Find the heading CurrentControlSet. Click
    Find the heading Control. Click
    Find the heading Class. Click
    Find the heading that begins {4D36E965- Click
    Go up to the Registry menu and select "Export Registry File... command. Make sure the "Selected Branch" radio button is checked and save that off somewhere that you can find it.
    Delete the key named LowerFilter.
    Select the key named UpperFilter, right click, select "modify". Then edit the text in the dialog to just say "GEARAspiWDM" followed by hitting the return key, the return after the word is important.
    Then reboot, and see what iTunes does.
    To get the system back to its previous state. Run Regedit again and use the Registry menu -> Import Registry File... command and select the file that you saved off in the first section.
    I'm particularly interested in getting rid of the "AFS2K" driver in the chain — that's a old driver from a company that hasn't existed in years.
    To answer your last question, why am I doing this?... I'm paying off a karmic debt. And someday we'll start that Tequila for Toonz paypal account and then I'll be set.

  • Spotlight and FAT32

    A nasty side effect of bootcamp is: If the windows partition is FAT32, spotlight will index it completely once a day upon the first boot of that day (well, it takes several minutes for spotlight to be useable, while the volume gets indexed).
    In the privacy settings of spotlight, i removed the winXP volume from spotlight indexing, and now by leopard boot is blazingly faster than before.
    Can somebody confirm this? this should be documented explicitly somewhere; or at least this message will help somebody googling an answer to his "spotlight daily slow indexing time" issue.

    The more I use Vista, the more I like how it allows configuration. Having to "opt-out" rather than opt-in seems the reverse of what I like. After 7 yrs I've also learned the quarks of OS X and to use tools like Spotless or TinkerTool to control Spotlight and other features.
    It would also be affected by the speed of your main drive, that XP is on the slowest tracks, and that it has to "jump" or do a full drive seek to get to files there. And by how much free space is on Windows.
    But it should just be checking for changes. Trouble is in the way FAT volumes don't keep file atributes or metadata perhaps (could be totally off, but it seems like copying files to/from FAT I lose the creation and modification date and other items).
    if you picked the Mac OS format, you'll be avoiding the silly reindex-every-time FAT thing.
    You'll know that the indexing is pretty much good to go once the drive stops crunching away nonstop, and there is no pulsing dot in the Spotlight menu icon.

  • Solaris 10 Update 10 (8/11) panics on boot under virtualbox and vmware

    I am trying to install S10 U10 in a VM and have downloaded the DVD ISO image. I verified the MD5 checksum then tried to boot the installation from the DVD image but it panics on boot under both Virtualbox (latest version) and VMware workstation (latest version). How can I get this working?

    I had no problems installing Solaris 10 U9 x86 from an ISO download. The ISO download of Solaris 10 U10 x86 I got recently is another matter. When I try to install U10 with VMware Player or Virtualbox on a Dell PC with Windows 7 the install process hangs. I can't tell if this behavior is a panic or not, but it is a problem. On both VMware Player and Virtualbox the install process gets to the following screen and never does anything else:
    SunOS Release 5.10 Version Generic_147441-01 64-bit

    So now my spotlight never searches for everything (I tried restarting, then logging off and logging back again, reindexing, delted plist) nothing works
    and finder in colum veiw crashes

    unfortunately I this is still not working, thanks for the link Eric i tried those options, but still the problem remains.
    I can clear the cache and re index my mac, and while the system is re indexing spotlight works and I can find material during the reindex.  This is obviously limited to the files that have been indexed at the point of using spotlight.
    Once indexing has finished if I go to spotlight and try to search for anything, there are no results only the dictionary appears.
    At the moment I have to delete the index cache every morning to trigger a re index so I can work, this is terrible and the worst upgrade experience I have had with any OS mac or windows

    I just bought an iMac with 8GB RAMs because my old MAC was a bit slow but worked fine under 10.6.x
    At the time of receipt of this new machine, so I made my transfer data between the two MAC with the migration tool.
    Finally my new machine, did not work well and was incredibly slowly or even froze completely redo the point to REBOOT by the START button. I did some cleaning OS with ONYX utility, but slowly returned.
    I realized that this was the final SPOTLIGHT when he began to make re-indexing it took me ALL of my resources and my MAC not working anymore and began to do SPOTLIGHT RE-indexing of any total when:
      - I plugged in a external HD, it went on RE-INDEXING.
      - I logged on Dropbox, it went on RE-INDEXING,
      - I logged on a NAS drive, it went on RE-INDEXING.
    In short, a real disaster.
    I tried to limit the indexing SPOTLIGHT unchecking somes types of data that was not necessary (images, etc..) ... But it does nothing change. In the end I completely disconnected SPOTLIGHT from my machine and my Mac has regained his form.
    I do not know what Apple has done, but before (10.6.x) indexing did not take much resource.
    After some research, I realized that many users complain about the extreme slowness of this new version, which has nothing revolutionary. Today updates on the successor to version 10.8 and nothing changes.
    Thank you for the review faster indexing tool / SPOTLIGHT and can finally OS X run correctly.

    Je viens d'acheter un iMac avec 8Go de mémoires vives parce que mon ancien MAC était un peu lent mais fonctionnait très bien sous 10.6.x.
    Au moment de la réception de cette nouvelle machine, j'ai donc fait le transfert de mes données entre les deux MAC avec l'outil de migration.
    Au final ma nouvelle machine, ne fonctionnait pas bien et était d'une lenteur incroyable voir même figeait completement au point de refaire des REBOOT par le bouton START. J'ai fait quelques nettoyages OS avec l'utilitaire ONYX, mais cette lenteur revenait.
    Je me suis rendu compte au final que c'était SPOTLIGHT quand il se mettait à faire des ré-indexation : il me prenait alors TOUTES les ressources et mon MAC ne fonctionnait plus et SPOTLIGHT se mettait a faire des RE-INDEXATIONS totale n'importe quand :
    - Je branchais un nouveau disque, il partait en RE-INDEXATION.
    - Je me connectais sur DROPBOX, il partait en RE-INDEXATION,
    - Je me connectais sur un disque dur NAS, il partait en RE-INDEXATION.
    Bref une vraie catastrophe.
    J'ai essayé de limiter l'indexation de SPOTLIGHT en décochant certains types de données qui n'était pas nécessaires (images, etc.)...mais cela ne changait rien. Au final j'ai completement déconnecté SPOTLIGHT et depuis ma machine a retrouvé sa forme.
    Je ne sais ce que Apple a fait, mais avant (10.6.x) l'indexation ne prenait pas autant de ressource.
    Après quelques recherches, je me suis rendu compte que de nombreux utilisateurs se plaignent de la lenteur extreme de cette nouvelle version, qui n'a rien de révolutionnaire. Aujourd'hui, Les mises à jour se succède sur la version 10.8 et rien ne change.
    Merci de revoir au plus vite l'outil d'indexation SPOTLIGHT afin que nos MAC puissent enfin fonctionner correctement.

  • Spotlight and finder not working after Yosemite upgrade

    Hi,
    I just upgrade to 10.10.1 from 10.8 on a Mid 2012 Retina macbook pro, 2.7Ghz i7, 16GB RAM, 750GB SSD drive.
    Since upgrading spotlight and finder have stopped working.  When I first upgraded I noticed it worked very briefly and found some of my applications, but now nothing.  The only thing it does is find the definition of the word I am searching for,
    I have
    gone in to sys pref > spotlight added and remove all folders and rebooted the machine
    gone in to sys pref > spotlight > privacy tab and ensured no folders are in that pane
    gone in to sys pref > spotlight > privacy tab and added "documents folder" closed sys prefs rebooted and then removed "documents" folder to try and trigger a re index
    gone to terminal and typed "sudo mdutil -E /" which should erase and rebuild the index but i get the error back "Error: Index is already changing state.  Please try again in a moment"
    gone to terminal and typed "sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.metadata.mds.plist" and then typed "sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.metadata.mds.plist"
    go to disk utility and verified my disk which comes back as showing no errors
    logged in as another user but spotlight and finder still not working
    Any other ideas my laptop is useless for work if I can't find anything,

    I can clear the cache and re index my mac, and while the system is re indexing spotlight works and I can find material during the reindex.  This is obviously limited to the files that have been indexed at the point of using spotlight.
    Once indexing has finished if I go to spotlight and try to search for anything, there are no results only the dictionary appears.
    At the moment I have to delete the index cache every morning to trigger a re index so I can work, this is terrible and the worst upgrade experience I have had with any OS mac or windows

  • Spotlight and Mail searches

    I have just replaced my 2007 MP with a shiny new one, (garbage can someone described it to me) !
    The computer is responding a bit slowly entering text into Safari fields, i.e. logging into sites, username & passwords - I type out a word and it takes seconds to appear in the box.
    Also searches in Mail & Spotlight do not yield any results and judging by other posts on the subject, is probably down to Spotlight indexing the 3TB of data on the Pegasus drive.
    I did not migrate any files over from my old MP as I wanted to keep a clean new drive.(I did this initially but ended up in a mess so had to erase the disk and reinstall Yosemite) I have reinstalled the majority of my apps that were on the old machine from the app store and note a significant difference in the sizes of the Libraries :
                        Old MP          New MP
    Library          88gb                 6 gb
    User library   33gb               11 gb
    So some questions arising that hopefully someone will answer :-
    Doing a spotlight search of the Pegasus drive - there is no progress bar (as noted in other posts) - there is a message that just says "Searching Promise". So presumably it is indexing the drive. Not sure how long it will take to do 3TB of data (a lot of video)
    Mail - doing a search in Mail does not do anything, no dropdown etc. I presume that this is using Spotlight and once that is indexed then a Mail search should work?
    Is there a way to migrate specific apps from my old MP? 
    I am wondering why such a big difference between the libraries on the 2 machines.
