Spotlight blank iOS 8.1.1

Upgraded to 8.1 and Spotlight stopped working. Just came up with blank results. I tried the "sending an email to myself", not sure I did it right but it didn't fix it. Tried changing the order or search items still no luck. Had to turn the phone off before spotlight worked. Now upgraded to 8.1.1 and Spotlight broke again. Tried both fixes as before with no dice. Turned phone off and it partially worked (Bing but no app results) and now doesn't work again. Sound like Apple broke Spotlight or failed to put an "refresh" option to wake it up when it forgets to work. Can we please make sure the phone works before adding "features"?
I am using an iPhone 5S in case anyone has a fix for the issue. And yes I know this isn't universal. My wife's phone and iPad work just fine with Spotlight.

hey all I had a friend with the same issue it turns out he had that many apps there was no free spots on any of the home screens and so I got him to place all the apps into folders (there is a limit of 135 apps per folder) and then I got him to restart his phones/ipad and the issue was resolved I haven't heard any more from him about it, the biggest thing that threw my friend and I off when sorting out the issue was the fact the issue was present on 2 of his iphones and his ipad the reason for that was he had automatic app downloads turned on for those devices so for the most part all the apps he had downloaded on each device were on all the devices. another step you can take is go into settings general spotlight un tick all the spotlight options then restart your device then re tick all the spotlight options and do another restart which should rebuild the spotlight index hope this helps.

  • Spotlight Search showing deleted emails

After loaded IOS6 - now when I do a "Search Iphone" using spotlight search I see emails from my Gmail account that were COMPLETLY deleted over 3 weeks ago (about 10 of them). This occurs even AFTER COMPLETLY cleaning out ALL Gmail folders (which they were when I downloaded the update)
How can I delete from this permanently search? Where could they be "hiding" on the Iphone..... Archive is shut of (and always has been). again ALL MY gmail folders are COMPLETLY empty.
Tried deleting Gmail account from phone and did a power down and reboot AFTER deleting Gmail account from phone too! yes... cleared history & cookies in Safari too.

I've been having the same problem with deleted emails showing up in Spotlight on iOS 6.0.2 (iPhone 5) so I did some experiments. (I'm using an IMAP account, not POP, and all my folders are on the server.)
There are actually two different problems (three if you count people who don't check all their account folders so the message is just tucked away in a place they didn't think to look).
The first problem occurs when you compose a message but don't hit Send, then hit Cancel, hit Save Draft, go back to the draft, and send it. Then you go to the Sent folder and delete the message and go to the Trash and delete it there. Now it doesn't show up anywhere in any account folder. But, if you go to Spotlight and search for something in the message, it will appear and you can bring it up and send it again. Mail is obviously squirreling away the draft in a place where it can't be deleted. Nothing short of a backup, reset, and restore will get rid of it.
The second problem occurs when you delete a message from a folder and then go the Trash and delete it there. If you immediately go to Spotlight, you'll see a "ghost" message: it's in Spotlight but if you try to bring it up, you'll find it doesn't really exist and Mail either shows a blank message or shows the account folders. You can get rid of these "ghosts": press the Home button to see the home screen and then double-click the Home button to show the running apps, then press and hold on the Mail icon and click the '-' badge to quit Mail. Then if you go back to Spotlight and search again, they're gone.
So there are two bugs: one serious and one that can be fixed by quitting Mail. And these are caused by real files being kept by Mail so using iErase or Zero Free Space to clear free space (by writing a huge file) has no effect. And, until Apple fixes the serious bug, never, ever, save a draft. (And if you do, you'll have to back up, reset, and restore.)

  • Does iOS 8.1.1 have these feature or are they not present on my iPad Air?

I have an iPad Air (wifi only) and iPhone 5s. I'm wondering if the following features exist in iOS 8.1.1 and maybe I've missed it?
#1- Raise to speak for Siri. I know there is "Hey Siri" but in order to use that it requires you to be a wall-hugger. Is that correct? I've read in a discussion board that you can hold down the home button to enable Siri, then bring it up to your ear. That seemed to work somewhat okay for me. I bought my first iPhone for the raise-to-speak feature...bought my 2nd iPhone for that reason. It's a necessary Accessibility feature for me.
#2- I know the Apple Wireless Keyboard always worked with my iPad Air and my iPhone 5s but wasn't always the same experience as when using a Mac. Meaning, the keyboard shortcuts that enabled me to be productive, weren't always enabled. For example, I can still use in Apple Mail, shift+command+D and that would send an e-mail I've drafted. I wish more of the same keyboard shortcuts I use on my MacBook Pro would be enabled with my iPad Air/iPhone 5s. But after updating, I noticed even more shortcuts were taken away. Things like fn+delete, command+delete or option+delete don't delete an entire word or sentence. I also can't use shortcuts anymore to highlight a sentence from my keyboard. Or at least, in Mail there seems to be some decent functionality. But in Safari when trying to send Apple feedback through these forms...no dice (on a consistent/reliable basis). Why not? Please bring that back. Being disabled is no fun. But these shortcuts helped me. Is it me, or have things gotten worse with this Apple accessory with iOS 8.1.1? Or, has anyone found a solution? Yes, I unpaired and re-paired the device. I also notice that while typing with the Apple Wireless Keyboard, it doesn't spell check as I type. That's no fun.
#3- Reliable searching in Spotlight. Keyword here is RELIABLE. I've seen a lot of folks on Twitter posting screenshots of searches in Spotlight in iOS 8.1.1 for even Apple apps (like Phone, Contacts, etc.) and nothing comes up for applications. I've had the same issue when it comes to searching for installed apps on my iOS devices. Why? I know the release notes for iOS 8.1.1 mentioned fixes for iPhone 4s and iPad AIr 2. But what about iPhone 5s and iPad Air? Where's the love? I've tried unchecking and rechecking the Spotlight options. That didn't help. Yes, reset all my settings. Didn't help. Right before iOS 8.1.1 was released, I had restored my devices.
#4- Reliable searching for event in the native Calendar app. Again, keyword here is RELIABLE. So a few times now, I have tried to search for (recent) or future events/appointments in the native Calendar app by tapping the search icon in the app. The result? Nothing was found when searching by that method. However, by going through the Calendar app (day-by-day) I was able to find the appointments/events I needed to. However, this experience was horrible and very tedious. And at first, I just heard about this issue from friends. And family members were asking me for help. Has anyone experienced this issue? Any workarounds?
#5- Battery drain issues since iOS 8.1.1 on both my iPad Air and iPhone 5s. For example, I was using Comcast/Xfinity's TV GO app to watch a movie I downloaded on my iPhone 5s. The device was in Airplane Mode and Location Services was off. The device ran very hot (even though it is quite cool in my apartment and outside, and it was not being plugged in). It went from a charge of 100% to the caution dialog box to recharge in just over 2 hours of viewing. Brightness setting was its lowest. Now, that experience is quite new to me. My battery was replaced by Apple about 4 months ago. I attempted to replicate the issue the following night with the same settings. It wasn't as bad but still a drain much faster than what I've seen before. Has anyone else experienced this type of drain? On my iPad Air, I've noticed a sharp decline in battery performance since updating to iOS 8.1.1 and I don't know why. And it's intermittent and frustrating. I use only Apple cords and adapters. I follow the instructions about Apple batteries and ways to optimize per the Apple website. Yet, I'm seeing a problem. Anyone else? Anyone have a fix?
#6- Is there any way to create location-based reminders on my iPad Air (wifi-only configuration)? I tried to make a location-based reminder and the native Reminders app wasn't having any of it. It would not allow me to do that.  Why not? I tether my iPhone to my iPad.
#7 - Is there any way to use Apple Maps on my iPad Air (wifi-only configuration) when tethering my iPhone 5s? It doesn't do turn-by-turn navigation. Why not? Any workarouds?
#8- Sooo.....you know on our iPhones it gives us the cellular data breakout? Is there any way to get a breakout of how the iPad Air  is using the Hotspot/cellular data? I ask because I know on Netflix website, there is an option to toggle playback settings. I switched it to "low" since I was going to be traveling. I noticed that when I tethered my iPhone to my MacBook Pro, the playback setting seemed to be at the low setting (based on cellular data usage from my iPhone). But when I tethered my iPhone 5s to my iPad Air, it ate up a whole lot of data. It's as if the Netflix app didn't adhere to change in setting. When I contacted Netflix, they said it was an issue with Apple. When I contacted Apple, they said it was an issue with Netflix. I was hoping to see some kind of cellular data usage report when we tether, so I can better help Apple or Netflix. Or...if you know of a way to get my Netflix to not eat up all my data, that would be great too.
I know this was a lot. But I appreciate any and all help. I'm interested in any other bugs you're seeing with the latest version of iOS 8.1.1. My apologies in advance if this has multiple spelling mistakes. Spellcheck and grammar check don't seem to want to work in this Safari session.

    1. Unfortunately is was removed in iOS 8 .
    2. Unfortunately being a mobile O.S. means not all shortcuts may work or have a counterpart there.
    3.  I have no issues with Spotlight.  Make sure you have the categories ordered the way you want to see them. As sometimes the App results may be below other result categories where you need to scroll further down. You can change this in Settings->General->Spotlight and drag the categories to the order you want them.  For instance I have Apps at the top followed by Suggestions, and then Mail and then Contacts, and then everything else.
    4.  Again no real issues for me there.

    7. It should work. What happens when you try?
    8. When the iPad connects to the iPhone hotspot, it treats it as a regular Wifi connection because that's all it is to it.  And since you cannot limit the usage from other devices on the iPhone, it just lets it use the Cell data as much as it wants.  You'll need to manually manage this.  A Cellular iPad will have the same Cell data management as an iPhone.  A Wifi only iPad will not, as it doesn't actually use Cell data itself, so nothing really to limit.

  • Most albums missing album art on iPod Touch after updating to iOS 7

    Hi there,
I updated my 5th-gen iPod Touch to iOS 7 yesterday.
As the activation servers were overloaded for most of the afternoon, the update failed for me and my iPod touch ended up wiped and in recovery mode.
I installed a blank iOS 7 and then restored my settings from the previous day's iCloud backup.
I then reuploaded all my music from iTunes to the iPod.
Most of the album art is missing from the iPod and it's making me very sad. All the album art is visible in iTunes, so this is rather confusing. There seems to be no consistency to it, between albums I bought on iTunes or albums I bought elsewhere and ripped to MP3 and added to my iTunes library, or albums for which I got the art directly from iTunes or by adding it myself.
I'm using a PC with Windows 8 and the latest version of iTunes, if this matters.
    Any ideas?

    That happens sometimes
    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Unsync all music and resync
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.

  • I can't delete phantom emails

    iPhone 6  IOS 8.1.3
I have recently deleted all the emails from a particular person on my mac email account.  When I search that person's name in the search all email accounts in the the search bar in the email app, I can no longer see any emails from that person. The problem however is, when I search that person's name from the search bar on top of my iPhone6 home screen, I get a list of phantom draft messages that I cannot seem to delete or get rid of. I have tried saving them as new draft messages. Once they appear in my draft mailbox, I delete and trash them. Then I search again from the home screen search and the phantom emails are still there as a draft that appears no where else except in the main search from the home screen.  I need help to get rid of these phantom messages.

Spotlight is known to have strange behaviour (since the introduction of spotlight on iOS 3.0): It keeps in it's spotlight files deleted files, and these "phantom" residues will only delete when you reset the device, and it will even transfer if you set the iPhone from backups.
Some users have even reported on this forum that this caused them some troubles (i.e: divorce, because the wife discovered spotlight saves of message her husband was sending to whoever...). You might want to feedback this to Apple: https://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html
Therefore, you emails are really deleted, but they leave a trail behind...

  • TS2755 I can't find the iMessage icon.

  • Broken Fonts and Skype Home screen layout, and lay...

I see another new 7.8 version has been released, but still some old bugs remain:
Home Screen fonts are broken, at least in Polish verison you seem to use some font that does not contain our accented letters
Home Screen status boxes 2 columns and 1 column layout is fixed to pre-defined 2 widths only. Come on, you can make it adapt to any size? Leaving some white areas, or making whole screen scrollable is really ugly, and even for regular website this would not be acceptable.
The same happends on some other screens, like user profile.

Try doing a Spotlight search for the Contacts app.

  • IPhone is stolen - what can I do now?

My IPhone was stolen now about a month ago. Well, I recognised I after one hour, meantime they deactivated my IPhone so I was not able to use ICloud to find my device.
I guess they have erased all data and the configuration by installing a new IOS on the device.
Whatever, I have the unique IMEI number of my device, purchase contract and even the theft report. The police here in Austria told me that they will note the IMEI number but they will not localise my device, even if they are able to do that!
So, is there any possibility by apple to find, localise or completely lock my IPHONE by IMEI?

That is missing the point of what I wrote before. Never wrote anything like apple is responsible in any way, just asked if the offer any service to lock or locate it again with IMEI only, even if the IPHONE was set up with a blank IOS -  I mean, what ist the big deal and difference to "Find IPHONE" than ...!
And well there is a proof that the IPhone was stolen, it is the theft report and so on, finally it never would be the thing of apple to controll and proof the real ownership, this is police work.
Yes I too say that it is no problem for the service provider(phone operators), in my case Orange(Austria), to localise the IPHONE by IMEI, but the  will to this by judge's decision only and you wont't get this decision if it is just stolen...
After all, no matter who would lock and/or localise the IPHONE Apple or Service Provider, both would have the abilitiy to do that (Either bei cell network or synchronization with Itunes), but the wont't, just to avoid extra work, extra costs and possible problems.
Again, the theft report must be enough and it`s no matter of privacy, who ever would locate the device will grant the information to the police only. Police will than find the current proprietor and invastigate who the real owner might be. If the current proprietor dont have any proof like a purchase contract the case is clear. If the investigation result is, that the reporter of the theft report lied, he has to pay for all the police work an will get a charge.
With this solution one will always have to pay for the work of the localization service, the work of the police ... and with this solution no privacy will be bruised and with this solution 90% of all stolen cell phones will be found and people will not do it for fun because of being afraid of a possible charge ... - so what?
Hugh, that is the way how easy it could be, isn't it?
But currently it's more a dream than reality
That would be much more secure than your insurance example. In case of a normal insurance problem, all you have to do is get a theft report and tell it your insurance company

  • Profile Manager: Invalid profile druing supervise and Install iOS8 Devices

Since the Update of the Mac OS X (Mavericks) Server-App to 3.2.1 we are no longer able to install Profiles on new supervised iPads with the Apple Configurator.
Error Message on the iPad during the setup procedure "Invalid Profile".
    Before 3.2.1 and/or iOS8 this
    Any sugestions?
    Thanks
    Martin

i tried the solution (Solution: Server 3.2.1 "Invalid Profile" w/ Supervision-based Enrollment), but the workaround did not solve my problems. The described mdm_enroll.php file is on my system, but this filed does not contain the check "if (emptyempty($settings['dep_service_state'])) DieUnauthorized('DEP isnotenabledonthisserver');".
I found out, that there is another file called dep_mdm_enroll.php in the same folder with the the check. So i commented out the checks in this file.
When i do no a new setup of a blank iOS 8.0.2 Device i get one step further, than before: Now the Ssetup fails when e enter the creditantials of the profile manager. The user/password combination i enter is definatley correct...
Has someone another idea, how to continue?
    Kind Regards
    Martin

Try doing a Spotlight search for the Contacts app.
Read this for doing a search:

My son erased the App Store from the iPad. Can anyone tell me how to restore it?

You can't erase/delete the preinstalled apps like App Store.
You can do a Spotlight search.

  • Spotlight didn't show results (iOS 8.2)

I updated my iPad mini (16 GB no cellular) to iOS 8.2 and I still have the spotlight issue (results in blank, have had since iOS 8.1.1); but I noticed that the spotlight problem in iOS 8.2 is less frequent.
Is there a temporary fix for that?

I had this happen on my iPhone 6+, I restarted the device and spotlight started working again like normal
