Spotlight can't find a word in an Excel document?

I'm sure someone has addressed this before, but I'm not sure which search words to even begin to try looking for my answer, so I'm just posting fresh. Apologies if this comes up day in and day out on here!
Basically, there are several files that I KNOW contain certain words in them, but they remain unseen by Searchlight. I've had my volumes all re-indexed, but still no luck.
Is it my misunderstanding that Searchlight should be able to find, for example, an Excel document with a particular word in it (not in the filename, but a word IN the Excel doc)? I thought that was the glory of Searchlight as compared to regular ol' Search.
Anyone?

Thanks for the link. The case mentioned there is quite similar to mine, with the difference that opening a Word document and selecting a word won't make it visible for Spotlight (unlike the poster's case).
I tried what you suggested and here's what happened:
1-Chose the unique word "Splitz" and Spotlighted it. Nothing came up.
2-Created new Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Pages, and Keynote documents; typed the word "Splitz" at the beginning of each document, and didn't input any more information that the unique word.
3-Saved all documents under the title "Haravatska" (another unique word) and even made sure their extensions were visible.
4-Spotlighted the unique title "Haravatska": all documents with that title were found.
5-Spotlighted the unique word "Splitz": no results.
6-Opened the Word document titled "Haravatska" with the unique word "Splitz" in it, saved it as a .txt file under the same title. Closed it.
7-Spotlighted the unique word "Splitz" again: this time only the .txt text file was found.

As you can see your issue may not be new. I do know
and thus never really felt concern, that the
Spotlight technology defined limitations to ensure
that it didn't create indexing issues re storage and
speed that would be excessively slow or massive.
As for your problem, it doesn't appear to be common.
I do know that placing a specific word in a Word or
Excel will only work if it is positioned up front,
perhaps before the 100kb mark when Spotlight stops
reading the file.
However, having said that, am I to assume that if you
open a new document in Word, type in the unique word,
and save the file to the same drive, that the
filename does not Spotlight list the file name?

I have a very odd problem. Spotlight can't find TextEdit anymore, even if I type the name of the app fully in the field. The app is right where it should be in the Applications folder. It hasn't been excluded from search and I have done a reindex of Spotlight but the problem persists.
Other apps come up exactly right.

    From the menu bar, select
     ▹ System Preferences ▹ Spotlight ▹ Privacy
The list of items excluded from Spotlight indexing is shown (it may be empty.) Click the plus (“+”) icon to add an item to the list. Select your boot volume (under DEVICES) and add it to the list. Then remove it from the list by selecting it and clicking the minus (“-“) icon.
Spotlight will rebuild the index. If you try to do a Spotlight search now from the magnifying-glass icon in the top right corner of the display, a pulsing dot will appear in the icon. When the dot disappears, the indexing is complete.

  • Error - "Can not find Microsoft Word installed.."

    Hi,
I downloaded RH6 demo to test it, but can't generate a
    printed documentation.
When I try, I only get an error message
"Can not find Microsoft Word installed on your system"
I have no idea why this happens. First, in the layout
settings I have set .pdf to be produced - DOC option is not
    checked.
Also, MS Word is installed (Office 2003), and in Tools /
Options / HTML Editors Word 2003 is listed, with a correct path to
Winword.exe (which I reselected, just in case) .
This happens on Windows Vista Ultimate edition, UAC off.
    Other layouts are generated normally.
Any idea how to fix it?
    Thanks

RH6 is not supported under Vista.
I cover this in the article I wrote for Adobe's DevNet pages.
    http://www.adobe.com/devnet/robohelp/articles/get_started.html
It is also covered in the Getting Started Guide that ships
with the product. A soft copy can be found at
    http://www.adobe.com/support/robohelp/documentation.html
See also Snippets on my site where there is a reference to a
forum post about running RH6 under Vista.
When you installed RH6 did it find Word on your system then?
Did you install using your logon with admin rights attached?

  • Spotlight can't find song text in iTunes

In iTunes you can type the text of a song in the field: Text - but Spotlight can't find this information.
But if you copy the same text in Info - and the box: comments - Voila - Here we go!
It would be a good thing if Spotlight can find all the information you have about your songs - like text from a Dashboard widget - (this text file IS FOUND!)
Is it possibel for Spotlight to find this information?
    Thanks

    Hi, flemminglimar.
There's no "Text" field in the Get Info window for any song I have in iTunes. I'm running iTunes 6.0.2.
If I launch iTunes, Control-Click a song, select Get Info from the resulting context menu, then click the Info tab, there's no Text field therein.
Have you installed some tool like ID3X for adding lyrics to sounds?
iTunes now includes a Lyrics tab into which one can type or paste song lyrics. This seems to be a relatively recent addition to iTunes. Adding content to the Lyrics tab of a song file actually writes them inside the song file itself, but Spotlight does not find them. It appears that the Spotlight plug-in for Audio has not been updated since Tiger was released and does not index the lyrics, hence it cannot find songs based on their lyrics.
    Good luck!

  • Why  I can't find the overall status in billing document!?

    Hi,
Why I can't find the overall status in billing document? but I can find this status in table VBUK, some documents set 'B' in this field, some set 'C', all of them are Completed and the corresponding account documents are cleared. for this status is 'B',I can't archive these documents.
    Thanks.

    Dear Lance
Check the field Document object    i.e Document Status object .
    A     Order
    B     Purchase order
    F     Billing document
    K     Sales activities
    L     Delivery
    T     Shipment
    V     Shipping
    X     Others
Check if all your entries are F, if not find out which document and try to find out why it is not C.
    Do revert with your feedback
If it is still a problem , check some SAP notes
For e.g. Note 142368 - Segment VBUK missing in billing document
Header status segment VBUK is missing in the billing document. You can check this with the general table display (SE16).
It is not yet known why this segment is missing.
correct many documents, you can use report ZZVBUK01.

  • Spotlight can't find file (even after re-indexing)

I have a files right on my desktop that neither spotlight or finder can find in their search results. Don't know when this started happening, but very weird. I've re-indexed several different ways but still no luck. Anybody run into this?

Baltwo: Thanks for the try, but your answer had no bearing.
The PROBLEM (which I solved) was that the user (the name with the little house next to it), had had its priveleges changes from Read/Write to Write Only (Drop Box).
I have no idea how or why that happened, but the result was Spotlight couldn't find anything. Once I put the privelege back to Read/Write, everything works fine now and Spotlight is once again all seeing! The priveleges are those little Sharing and Permissions section at the bottom of the Info summary (Get Info).
I am back to using Spotlight again and I've made sure any changes to me (the user) are under my lock and key.

  • Spotlight can't find files on my camera's SD card.

If I do a search (via Spotlight, via the "pill" oval, or via cmd-F) on my 32gb SD card for "RW2" (Panasonic RAW file), I get nothing. If I do the same search on my HDD, I get lots of hits, as there are lots of RW2 files on my machine, but none of the results reside on the SD card. This tells me Leopard can see the files, just not on my SD card.
The card is FAT32 by neccessity. Is there something I'm doing wrong to not be able to acess the files via Spotlight? EasyFind finds them in 2 seconds.
    Thanks.

I've had some luck with excluding a drive and then removing the exclusion. This triggers spotlight to reindex a drive, maybe a memory card too?

  • Can't find "key words" with accentuated characters

Since I have installed Aperture 3, I can't find pictures with a "key word", if the key word contains an accentuated. Otherwise, it works fine. I have verified this many times. For example if I search for the word "érable", Aperture won't find the pictures, but if I search "rable", it will find all the pictures associated to those syllables. I have tried that with many words, with the same result. I also tried to search "erable" (without the acute accent on the "e") and Aperture did not find the pictures.
Since I use a lot of French accentuated words, this is a big problem.
Does anybody else have that problem?
    Does somebody have a solution?
    Thanks for helping.

I was able to replicate the problem on my system, all updates current. The best way to alert Apple is via the link provided right within Aperture. Go to the menu bar item *Aperture > Provide Aperture Feedback*.

  • Spotlight Can't Find My Raw Files

For months now, Spotlight has been unable to find my raw files. If I type .CR2, it finds them just fine, if I type any digit(s) at all before the .CR2, it can't find them. The same problems happen with my older camera that ends raw files .CRW
I'm not concerned with the metadata, just the file by name.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks,
    George

Ah, the difference is between using the "quickie" Spotlight versus the full Command-F, which returns much better results.
Reading what you are getting strikes me as showing that the metadata importer handling your new camera's files is not working quite right. Thus, I have one drive that is searchable with Spotlight, but not indexed (it is a bit tricky to set it up that way). If I do a quick Spotlight search on "4039" my camera raw files that are on the fully indexed drives all show up, but the copy on the non-indexed drive does not. If I do a full Command-F search, with the two criteria of Kind:Canon Camera and Name Contains 4039, then it does show up. So I would guess that your new files are behving as if they are not fully indexed, and that the camera raw support in the metadata importer is lacking for that camera's files. Perhaps your new camera's raw format is just not fully supported yet. Have you run the latest Camera Raw updater from Apple?
Also you might try one of the search utilities that doesn't depend on indexing, EasyFind is free:
    http://www.devon-technologies.com/products/freeware/index.html
You might find you like it better. Because it does a brute force search it can be rather slow. If you restrict it to just the folder that contains images, even if the folder is quite large with many sub-folders, rather than having it do a whole drive, its performance is actually quite fast.

  • Where can i find microsoft word from a furbised/used apple computer?

our facility was given a used computer (apple) after they deleted all files in it. however i am trying to see if i can find the WORD in it so kids can use it for their paperwork. But i could not find it in the system. I do not want to buy a new word 365 because it is not compatible with the pc. I need help please?

What is an iMac65? That isn't a model identification.
Open System Information/Profiler in the Utilities folder. Report what is listed in the right panel for the Mac Model Identifier. Should be two integers separated by a comma.

  • Spotlight can't find file

I just saved a file in a subfolder in my documents, but Spotlight is not able to find it. It is a .png file (picture file). Spotlight does however find other files in that folder. I'm searching via filename, not content. If I open the folder, I can see and use the file without a problem. I have copy/pasted the file name to make sure it is not misspelled.
Any insight into why spotlight is proving useless here will be greatly appreciated. I'm loosing faith in OS X and I'm really sad about it.
    Thanks

Dimitris, my own suggestion is very simple: forget Spotlight. Disable it using Spotless, which is available here: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/33800
Then download either, or both Easyfind http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/8707 and Find File http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/10906315
I haven't used Spotlight for over a year now, and have even found a way to remove that pesky magnifying glass from my menubar.
I can find anything I want, any time I want, very fast and simply and above all - reliably.
