Spotlight cannot find file

Hi All,
I am very frustrated because Spotlight is incapable of finding a file on my Mac.
The file is named: "Maya.env"
And is located here:  Users/username/Library/Preferences/Autodesk/maya/2011-x64
Can anyone tell me why Spotlight is not able to find this file?
I just finished having the search index rebuild and it still will not find this file even when I direct it to search the Preferences directory.
This is really lame....PLEASE tell me there is a way to fix this....I need to search for little weird files all the time and having to manually navigate to them defeats the purpose of having Spotlight.
Thanks for any help or ideas...
Bern

Open the folder Library/Preferences/Autodesk in a Finder window.
Launch the Terminal application, copy or drag -- do not type -- the following text into the window, and press return.
find Library/Preferences/Autodesk -type f -exec touch {} \;
Quit Terminal. Go back to the Finder window and enter "Maya.env" (without the quotes) in the search box. Anything?

  • Spotlight Cannot Find Files

    Hi,
I have an encrypted disk image with some files in it. However, spotlight cannot find any of the files. Most are text files and I even placed tags in the Spotlight Comments section of the 'Get Info' popup. Any ideas how I can have spotlight find these files?
PS. Is it just me or did spotlight in Leopard get less powerful, in that there aren't as many custom filters to put on finding metadata. Plus it is a chore to specify if you only would like to search one folder.
    Thanks
    IP20

i'm having the same problem and my disk isn't even encrypted. since switching to leopard, spotlight has been a distaster. it worked fine in tiger, but i've repeatedly tried to find things that i know exist with no luck.
for example, i do a search on my local for files that i created called FAQ, nothing relevant comes up. i then look around myself and find the folder they are in, called FAQ, and do a search in that specific folder for files called 'FAQ'. i have two browser windows open, one with the search results, one with the actual folder. in the folder i see seven files with FAQ in the file name. in the search results window, with file name clicked, and that folder specified, it brings up only one of the seven files. other times it's come up with none, and i'm looking at the **** things sitting there. what gives? am i losing my mind?

  • Spotlight and finder cannot find files as of a certain date. What can be the problem and how to solve?

Spotlight and search field in Outlook on MacBoon cannot find files as of a certain date. What can be the problem and how to solve?

    Reinstall on both.
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
    Reinstall Mountain Lion or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it isthree times faster than wireless.
Restore your iPhone to reinstall iOS. Be sure to do this while connected to your computer and iTunes.
Tap Settings > General > Reset > Erase all content and settings.

  • Spotlight cannot find any files on an OS X Lion server. Any ideas?

Spotlight cannot find any files on an OS X Lion server.
Spotlight keeps on "losing" the files on the system. Spotlight searches will show applications, but no files. Rebooting the system will cause the files to start appearing again in searches, but the problem re-occurs within a day or two of the reboot. Removing and re-adding the volume with mdutil has the same effect as rebooting the system, but is much slower due to the re-indexing once the indices are deleted.
    $ sudo mdutil -sv /
              Indexing enabled.
Scan base time: 2011-11-07 15:43:31 +0000 (1209505 seconds ago), reasoning: 'scan required - mount side'
So it seems to know it needs to scan the volume. When I do
    $ sudo mdutil -i on /srv/store2
    I then get
    $ sudo mdutil -sv /srv/store2
    /srv/store2:
              Error: unexpected indexing state.  kMDConfigSearchLevelTransitioning
Which would assume means it's changing from an unindexed state to an indexed one.
There is no Spotlight config that would prevent Spotlight from locating the files in question. The index just appears to be inaccessible. mdutil -s / shows "Indexing enabled" for / (the mount point in question) and "Indexing disabled" for /srv/store2, another folder it should be indexing.

    Update
After reboot, mdutil -sv /srv/store2 shows:
    /srv/store2:
      Indexing enabled.
Scan base time: 2011-08-22 15:53:26 +0100 (7954912 seconds ago), reasoning: 'scan required - shutdown side'
And I can see three mdworker processes running
$ ps ax | grep mdworker
      299   ??  SN     0:00.35 /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Frameworks/Metadata.framework /Versions/A/Support/mdworker -s mdworker -c MDSImporterWorker -m com.apple.mdworker.pool.0

  • Spotlight cannot find my images

    Hello guys,
I have foudn the answer to my question in the existing posts, so I'm trying to explain what happens to me.
Spotlight cannot find my pictures (eg containing 'cat') whereas they are or tagged, titled or commented with 'cat' in iPhoto... I need to re-aply the whole keywords to each image so that Spotlight can find it.
Have anybody allready experienced this pb & solved it? Thanks for your answers & sorry about my bad english.
    Guillaume,

Guillaume, since I think you just want to find your images (and not get into an extended, and increasingly arcane, discussion of Spotlight and its potentialities/defects) I suggest you use a search tool other than Spotlight. These would include File Buddy and EasyFind. There may be others as well.
EasyFind or FileBuddy *will* find what you are looking for.

  • "cannot find file" after formatting and moving!!

Wanted to have iTunes library included in Time Capsule backup. So had to reformat external hardrives where all my songs are from Windows do OS. Copied everything on other HD, reformatted HD with OS, copied back all songs. HD still has same name "MUSIC", but iTunes cannot find files.
Changed in iTunes preferences the location of files to ensure it searches in the right place AND also replaced with text editor in "iTunes Music Library.xml" file all links with new address of HD (now after reformatting to OS I found it to be slightly different despite still same name).
But iTunes still cannot find the files. Everything is the same as before, HD name, directory structure, file names, etc. ONLY difference is it all is on "OS formatted" drive. Don't want to lose ratings and playlists of over 15,000 songs....is there still a solution?

The moment I "drag out" the Tunes Library File, then there is nothing left there, and when I open iTunes it is empty.
That's as expected. That file is the database iTunes uses that keeps track of everything, so when you then launch iTunes, it's starting from scratch.
I can import the Playlists from the XML and they do appear, but still no songs, all is empty. If I try to reimport from the new location, then they "do not fit into the playlists", meaning ratings etc. are lost.
Then you apparently didn't get the XML file edited properly; it's not easy to do.
Why does the simple location function in iTunes Preferences not work?
It does, when used as designed. The preference is where new additions (imports & purchases) will be stored. It does not change the location for existing files.
Put the original library file back. Then launch iTunes, Get Info on a representative track, and look at the path to where it thinks the files should be and compare that to the actual path. Any difference at all will break things. If there are differences (drive name slightly different, any difference in folder names/structure, etc.; letter case counts), try correcting them in Finder and see if that gets things working again. If not, then you'll have to use the Add to Library command to get back your tracks which will lose all your ratings, etc.
Where does iTunes save the links to the original files so it can simply be changed?
In the iTunes Library file, which cannot be manually edited.

  • Cannot find file #01, do you want to search?"

We recorded a song yesterday and saved it as properly as the other sessions we also recorded. Today I want to open it, but it always says "Cannot find file #01, do you want to search?" But I've got the problem only with one file, the other songs are ok.
The odd thing is: the file is there, also the tracks in the file and the recordings in the tracks appear. But the music inside the recordings is gone. Also the media file is empty. I'm quite desperate and my band will kill me. Can anybody help?

Did you move the songs to the current folder AFTER you added them to iTunes? Sounds like you did. Big mistake. You may just have to delete you library and re-import them from the current folder. Once you've done that, leave the files where they are. iTunes can't track where you're moving your music to from one place to the next.

  • Cannot sync photos-says cannot find file, will not sync

eveytime I try to sync, when it gets to photos, iTunes has an error window with no code that says "Cannot find file, cannot sync" Everthing else backs up and syncs except photos. My husband uses the same mac and he can sync just fine, no errors.

    For iPhoto the link said:
If you're syncing from an iPhoto or Aperture album, use these steps to find the iPod Photo Cache folder in the default iPhoto Library or Aperture Library location:
From the Finder, choose Home from the Go menu.
Once there, open the Pictures folder and locate the iPhoto Library file. (For Aperture, this is called Aperture Library.)  If you have moved your iPhoto Library or Aperture Library to a different location, go to that location in Finder first.
Control-click the iPhoto Library or Aperture Library file and choose Show Package Contents from the shortcut menu.
In the next window, locate the iPod Photo Cache folder and drag it to the Trash. Important: Do not remove or modify any other file within the library package. Removing or modifying other files may cause data loss.
    Close the Finder window.
Are you doing step 3?  You can also right click and select Show Package Contents.  It works both ways for me.  I just tried it.

  • I photo freezes under 'cannot find file'

When I open iphoto it works fine for a few seconds but then it freezes and says 'cannot find file .........'
I then have to force quit because it says it's 'not responding'
I don't know why the files have gone from iphoto because I can still find them if I search for them and they seem to be in the correct place.
For the moment I cannot use iphoto at all so please help!
    Thanks
    Chloe

When it says that it cannot find a file, does it mention the file types?
    Some other things to try:
Rebuild the database. Hold down the apple and option (or alt) keys and launch iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose the top three options.
Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts) and see if the problem is repeated there. If it is, then a re-install of the app might be indicated. If it's not, then it's likely the app is okay and the problem is something in the main account.

  • None of the links in my TOC or INDEX work. Cannot find file is the error message.

The files are on a networked drive. Win7. FM 8. I've renamed files. Regenerated. Created a new book. Nothing works.
I do have hyphens and underscores in the file names but no other special characters.
    Need help urgently.
    The error message is:
    Cannot find file named
      \SOL\Data\TechDocs\DRAFT\Shiva\OperatorManual\096-0461-001C-1.
                 fm.
Make sure that the file exists.
Note that the TOC and INDEX are listed in the book w/o a path while the body chapter has the entire path (above) listed in the book view.
    Thanks

IIRC, FM8 had an issue with a path having more than 5 (or 6?) sub-folders. Try bringing the files up a few levels or create a mapped network drive down to the lower levels.

Why is Spotlight not finding files in Users/UserName/Library/Applications Support ?
What needs to be configured to do that?
    Thanks.

CMD+F, click on Kind, select Other, and enable additional criteria. See http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/stopspotlightindex.html and http://homepage.mac.com/francines/articles/Leopard/leospot.html for starters.
