Spotlight comments have vanished since Lion

I'm astonished to find that all my Spotlight comments are missing since I upgraded to Lion. For example I have a folder called Published pdfs and the spotlight comment for each file was the name of the periodical in which it appeared. All gone. Anybody have any idea what's going on? Any similar experiences? Thanks.

OK. The easiest way is to use the TAB key to automatically expand the file path or to use quotes
Click on the file you want and do Command-I to see its path.
For example
/Users/rshs/Documents/My File.txt
You can do a couple of things:
$ cd "/Users/rshs/Documents/"    (you can copy straight out of the Get Info; cd = change directory)
$ mdls M [hit the TAB key  so that it expands] etc.
Or you can just do it from the beginning using the TAB key
$ mdls /Us[TAB]r[TAB]d[TAB]
etc.
Don't type the $,
You'll see what I mean about the tab when you try it.
If your file name has a space, you'll need to do \ then a space, but usually the TAB key will take care of it anyway. If you get a beep, you need to type a couple of extra letters:
cat
coat
c[TAB] won't do anything but ca[TAB] will expand to cat
You can TAB to expand the commands such as
mdls
but you'll usually need to type the first 2 or 3 letters.

  • Directory seems to have vanished since 10.5 and can't access backup

    In my Documents directory I have several sub directories. This directory was backed up by SilverKeeper (the free utility that comes with LaCie drives). Since upgrading to Leopard my directory now appears to be a file of zero size and the files that were in that directory are nowhere to be seen. I am getting the same result accessing the backup on the LaCie drive which leads me to believe that Leopard is somehow not recognizing it as a directory properly for some unknown reason.
    Some pretty critical files were stored there. Any suggestions?

    Hi folks,
    So I decided to go back to Leopard after having too many problems with SL, particularly Office. I had to do an erase and install, and now when I try to restore from one of my pre-SL backups on TM, it says the entire TM drive is not accessible because it was created with a "Newer version of MAc OS X".
    Most likely, your Leopard install disc was an older version than the one you were last running from, and you didn't install the "combo" update to get back to it.
    But as Kiraly says, the best thing to do is a full restore of your entire system. See item #14 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip* at the top of this forum.

    I used to solve the issue by running "PleaseSleep" application but that doesn't work anymore since Lion. I now want to fix the underlying problem.
    I'm not running any weird background processes and in my energy saver settings I've tagged "put the hard disk to sleep when possible:, "allow power button to put computer to sleep" and "automatically reduce brigthness". All pretty standard.
    Is there anyone who can give me some pointers ?

    Today I solved the same problem for my iMac running Snow Leopard. See https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3008791#15947706. The method may help you, too.
    For me it was the DynDNS Updater preventing my iMac from automatically entering sleep mode.
    To my knowledge the cause of this sleep problem can only be a peripheral device or a process. So I suggest to first unplug all peripherals and test whether that's the cause. If not, I suggest to terminate one process after another and to test automatic entering of sleep mode after each. Start with user processes; continue with system process if necessary.
    At least that's the way I found the offending process. Fortunately, I was able to change the configuration of that process to allow again automatic entering of sleep mode.
    Good luck!

    Dear Adobe.
    Yesterday I installed the latest version of Flash Player that auto appeared on my screen. Ever since I can not play video, and my system has become painfully slow. I have Mac OS Lion 10.7.5 and software is up to date. Before this everything was running beautifully. Can you please provide a link so I can uninstall the latest version only. Thank you. When you run the uninstaller, it will uninstall all Flash Player versions.
    If you want to revert to an older version after that, get it from http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/archived-flash-player-versions.html

    Since I have update to Lion I have my print not scanning,.  My classic FTP not supported anymore!!!! what is goin on with this update??????

    Recover the backup you made before you installed.  If you didn't backup, make a backup down, and selectively recover pieces of the backup that will work with the older operating system after erase and reinstalling 10.6.  See my backup FAQ*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
    Before you do, you may find your scanner preferences in your printer just need to be set in the Print & Scan preferences in Apple menu -> System Preferences, or some open source scanner and printer drivers can work better*: http://www.macmaps.com/printersx.html
    http://www.macmaps.com/macosxnative.html#SCANNER
    And in the future ALWAYS backup your data before you install anything.  That way you can recover where you went before.  Don't cross post in the forum if you can avoid it.  Remember this is a user to user forum, so responses may take awhile if you didn't post in an area that really is related to your question.  Issues with Lion are best handled in the Lion forum.  But as long as I have a chance, I'll respond to this thread.

  • Raw Search Terms for "Spotlight Comment" and "Locked" Status

    Is it possible to do a raw search for a specific Spotlight Comment. I know the option exists in the Other… dialog box, but I need to find files that do not contain comments which is not choice.
    Also, is there any way to find only files that are unlocked?

    If you go to Others and select Raw Query you can use it find items with a specific comment, and items without any comment. For example, if you have the comment "testme" in the Spotlight field you would paste this into the Raw Query field:
    kMDItemFinderComment == "testme"
    and all files with that comment would be found. To find files in a folder that contain NO comment at all, you would use this:
    kMDItemFinderComment != "*"
    Be warned though: when I tried this on a folder with only 5 items in it, 4 with comments and one without. it worked, returning the lone uncommented file, but it took an amazingly long time to do so (perhaps a minute, while the search for "testme" was instantaneous).
    The "File readable" and "File writeable" functions shown in Others, which presumably are what one would use to find locked files, simply do not work. This is not surprising since the information about whether a file is locked or not does not in fact appear in a file's metadata. I guess that will be a future addition. You can use find in Terminal to search for files that are locked/unlocked. Let me know if you really want to do this.

  • Carriage returns in Spotlight Comments - tip

    Because I could paste returns into the Spotlight comment window, I figured there was a way to place carriage returns into the window [without copying a return from TextEdit].
    ctrl-return works on my PowerBook
      Mac OS X (10.4.3)   Titanium PowerBook (15")

    The email is formatted poorly by the sender.
    The screen width for a PC is min 640x480, which is large enough to display the email with the extar carriage returns on every line.
    The  Blackberry has a much smaller resolution, even with smaller text (which you could try but I wouldn't count on).
    The BB removes extra CR/LF's (ie if you have three or four per line, it will only show one), but it isnt going to reformat the entire email.
    Especially since the email is generally formatted for a reason.
    The sender has not formatted the email (thatws an auto-reply email, right?) for small screens or mobile devices.
    If you open the email in outlook and then reduce the window size to 1/4 or smaller than you will see the exact same thing on the Outlook email...
    So, there is nothing you can do on the BB. Its the sender who needs to change their emails.

  • Cross-Platform Spotlight Comments?

    Hi there, we have a massive database with oodles of images on it. Some images have the product name in the title, others do not. We'd like a quick and easy way to do a search for say...Potatoes, and have all of the images associated with potatoes show up. I know you can add Spotlight Comments to each individual photo, but I'm having trouble getting any results from my search.
    Also, will a PC running Windows be able to do any kind of a search of these items? Or is there a way to label the images with keywords so both a PC and a MAC can do searches for them? We're trying to avoid making duplicate images that are then moved into an actual photo called Potatoes which will no only bog down our server with more images, but could cause confusion if any images are changed and not move into the exact same folders again.
    Thanks for any input.

    Start with a search for *search server, search share, shared search*, or variants. There are many recent posts on the subject about hosed searches w/10.5.6. Whether or not there are solutions for your issue, I haven't a clue since everything I have is Apple—I don't do windoze.

  • Automator - get or display Spotlight Comments?

    I have a workflow to set [or append to] Spotlight Comments, but it would help to show the existing comments first.  How can I get an Automator workflow or application to display the Get Info windows for selected file[s]?  [Or get the comments and put into a variable.]    -Peter
    [Using Lion on a MacBook Air]

    You can use a Run AppleScript action to get the comment of an input item (e.g. from a selection or choose dialog), which can then be passed to a Set Value of Variable action (the Set Spotlight Comments for Finder Items action will accept a variable in its text field), for example:
    on run {input, parameters}
         tell application "Finder" to return comment of first item of input
    end run

  • Spotlight Comments - questions, limits and opinions

    My wife and I are a little behind the curve. We updated our MacBook Pros, MacPro and PowerMac G5 to Leopard early this year in part due to the fact that my testing showed that Spotlight Comments are persistent on our home ethernet - If I put identifying comments in a file's Get Info > Spotlight Comments box while it is on my MacBook's Desktop, then move it to a "file server" (a shared drive on the PowerMac or MacPro), my wife can see and modify the Comment from her MacBook. The comments almost seem to be part of the file itself (yes, Francine, we know they really are not) unlike the volatile pre-X Finder Comments. We do not normally have any Windows machines on our network and when we do we certainly do not use one as a file server. We're pretty much vanilla Apple.
    Now, on to my questions:
    1 - if not in the file itself, where are the Spotlight Comments actually stored? If they're in a folder's .DS_Store files, then they would disappear if you nuke those files (like when trying to fix a folder that is not properly displaying its contents) and that has not been my experience. I know that you can use mdls in the Terminal to show the comment and the other useful stuff that appears in Get Info's More Info field, but can this data get separated from the file it is connected to, or is it in that mystical Resource Fork? I'm not a developer (JavaScript is about as much code as I can handle) so I don't need the gory details. I just want to know if we can nuke Comments by unintentionally deleting some invisible file.
    2 - What are the limits in Spotlight Comments? Are there any? How many characters will that field take? I am asking this since I have been trying to put info concerning an image into its Spotlight Comment field and once I close the Get Info window the Comment is gone. If I check with mdls in Terminal the image's kMDItemFinderComment field is not even created. I have been trimming off hunks of characters in the Comment and am now below 700 but it still won't take it (the file is not locked, I have full control of it, and it doesn't appear to matter what files' or folders' Comments field I try to paste it into). Is this limit documented anywhere, because I've been Googling for it all morning with no matches.
    3 - if not Spotlight Comments, then what? I see DefaultFolder has an option to write Comments as "OpenMeta Tags" but what little I could understand upon looking that up made it sound like they're Spotlight Comments that are embedded into the file itself - even files that do not normally have a spot for Comments. Putting the description in the filename is much easier in X than previously, but gets a bit unwieldy very quickly. Many (but not all) image formats can accept descriptions in things like EXIF, but doing so changes its Modification Date and screws up our sorting...
    4 - only tangentially related: how many years did it take for Apple to put in Safari a function that we made use of all the time in Netscape & IE in pre-X times: put the source URL of a download in the Comment field. Now why can't the Mozilla team put that in Firefox? It's not like I haven't posted that as a feature request multiple times...
    I know that file "tagging" is a hot topic and I do not expect a real solution here, but if someone can confirm that there is a character limit in a file's Spotlight Comment field and let us know where or if it's documented...
    Message was edited by: Notary Sojak

    UPDATE - apparently once a file's kMDItemFinderComment field is created (I got the Comment to stick once I was below 600 characters) it can take more characters. I jut replaced the successful 595 character comment with the full 735 character comment I had initially been unable to add and it is visible from all the Macs.

  • Find files that has no Spotlight Comments!

    Hi,
    Is there a way to create a Smart Folder to collect all the files that have no Spotlight Comments attached to them?
    Do Comments get copied when backing up to an external device? If not, is there a best practice?

    Thanks Steve
    This is the disadvantage of storing your files as referenced. Importing all referenced files is not the best solution for me, since I have a lot (100.000+) files.
    However, I just realized that you have to open all stacks in order to have Aperture show the right number of photos in the database. I found that I only missed 3 files and I did find them.
    Problem solved. Advise to others: be very structured when you store your files as referenced files.
    In future releases of Aperture there could be a function that would allow you to import files from folders that are not already inported.
    Aperture rocks.... sorting and filtering is great. Metadata management is sweet and makes things so much more easy.

    help. I have a Google Hangout in 40mins and my sound seems to have vanished. I went to Sys Prefs and it came up with Digital Out....and the Internal Speakers option is no longer there. How do I reboot, or fix this please?

    There are many possible causes for this issue. Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Some may not apply to your model. Back up all data before making any changes.
    1. Start with the steps recommended in this support article. Don't skip any of the steps. It's the starting point for further efforts to solve the problem.
    2. Make sure you have a fully up-to-date installation of OS X.
    3. If you've installed an application called "Memory Clean" or any other third-party software that is supposed to "clean" or "purge" memory automatically, remove it according to the developer's instructions and restart. You should do that even if the software is not causing the problem, because it's useless.
    4. Other third-party software that has been reported to interfere with sound output includes "Boom" and "Samsung Kies." If applicable, uninstall according to the developer's instructions (not by dragging something to the Trash.)
    5. If an AirPlay device is selected for sound output from iTunes (or from other applications via third-party software such as "Airfoil"), deselect it.
    6. Launch the application "Audio MIDI Setup" by entering the first few letters of its name in a Spotlight search and selecting it in the results (it should be at the top.) Select Built-in Output from the list on the left. If the Mute boxes are checked, uncheck them.
    7. If a red light is visible in the audio-out port when sound should be playing, the internal switch is stuck in the position for digital output. You may be able to free it by inserting and removing a mini-stereo jack of the proper size. If not, the machine needs to be serviced. Inserting any kind of tool in the port may cause damage that won't be covered by the warranty.
    If there's no red light, the switch may still be stuck in the headphone position. Try to free it the same way.
    8. Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard and mouse, if applicable. If more than one display is connected, disconnect all extra ones. Restart and test.
    9. If you have a MacBook Air, turn off Bluetooth and restart.
    10. Start up in safe mode. Don't log in; just restart as usual when the login screen appears. When you do, make sure the words "Safe Boot" do not appear in the login screen. If they do, the system is still in safe mode and sound won't work.
    11. Reset the NVRAM.
    12. Reset the SMC.
    13. Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/Preferences/Audio
    Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
              Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
    from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item selected. Move the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password. Restart the computer and empty the Trash. Recreate your settings in the Sound preference pane.
    *If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
    from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
    14. Reinstall OS X after backing up all data.
    15. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store.

  • How to copy a files spotlight comments for an entire folder and place them in a different file with that same name

    I have the same question in a different discussion but I already marked it as solved because one of the questions was answered. Here's the linke to the other discussion if your interested https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5970421
    I have movie covers saved as a jpeg for every movie my family and I own. There is about 700 and they each have a comment of the main actors, release dates, and descriptions. This makes it easy to find what to watch.Is there an applescript, automator, program I can download,  or program code supported in xcode that will do the following set of inscructions?
    Take the name of the picture file and spotlight comment, copy and paste it to a movie file's comments to a file with the same name but obviously has different extention. For an example
    In a Pictures folder
    Name: Dark Knight, The.jpeg       Comment: (2008) Genre: Action...             <- copy comment
    In a Movie Folder
    Name: Dark Knight, The.m4v       Comment:                                               <- paste
    and do this for all 700 files

    Clendenen02 wrote:
    where should I run the code? in the terminal, or an applescript, or should put it in xcode and run it from there or the terminal.
    What MrHoffman said.
    But if it's easier, you can wrap it in Automator and have Automator ask for the Folders: (Test on a sample of your files before running on all 700 files)
    (do you really own 700 movies??)
    The Workflow is:
    Put this in the Run Shell Script Action (and pass input as arguments":
    PicDir=$1
    MovDir=$2
    for f in $PicDir/*
    do
         if [ ! -d "$f" -a "${f##*.}" = "jpeg" ]; then
              comment=$(mdls -raw -name kMDItemFinderComment "$f")
              if [[ $comment != "(null)" ]]; then
                   picname=${f##*/}
                   movname=${picname%.*}.m4v
                   if [[ -e "$MovDir"/$movname ]]; then
    osascript <<-EOF
    tell application "Finder"
    set comment of file (POSIX file "$MovDir/$movname") to  "$comment"
    end tell
    EOF
                   fi
              fi
         fi
    done
    (BTW, I know that this is a bit of sloppy scripting (wraping an osascript in a Bash Script wrapped in Automator, but it does what you need)
