"Spotlight" has been "indexing backup volume" for hours

I have been having some problems with making a backup to Time Capsule using Time Machine, but it finally was resolved (after a very long prep time). Now, "Spotlight" shows a message that it is indexing the Backup volume (icon for backup value stays on the desktop)and estimating the backup time, but no time ever showed. I went to Console to see what messages were being posted and saw many messages as follows:
8/5/08 1:45:28 PM /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[185] Waiting for Spotlight to finish indexing /Volumes/Backup of Barbara Klein’s MacBook/Backups.backupdb
Now spotlight is finished estimating and telling me that the estimated time is about 70 hours to index (and rising)!! Can anyone tell me what is going on? Or what, if anything I should do? If I turn off the computer, won't it simply start that indexing again when a backup happens?
Help would be appreciated!

I have done that, so I will see what happens next! Putting the Time Capsule and the backup volume on the privacy list seemed to shorten the time to 7 minutes! And now the indexing has stopped. Whether this will be an issue if I am ever looking for something on the backup volume is a question, I suppose.
Thanks for the tip.

  • My flash update has been stuck at 30% for hours. Is there anything I can do to actually get it to download?

I have been trying to download flash to watch an exam review and it has been stuck at 30% for hours. I tried restarting the download and it went to 30% and stopped again. I am using a Mac with the most up to date software available for it.

This morning we resolved a problem that prevented Flash Player installations from completing for some of our Macintosh users.
If you encountered this problem, please delete any previously downloaded Flash Player installer and either:
1.)      Download the installer again from https://get.adobe.com/flashplayer
    2.)      Download the stand-alone installer from  http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/pub/flashplayer/latest/help/install_flash_player_osx.dmg

I Just bought Adobe story but when I press sign in there appears an ST logo with a spinning @bar that has been on my screen for hours

Can you please try the following?
    - first make sure that you have flash player up-to-date. You can get the latest version from https://get.adobe.com/flashplayer
Now log into story wait for some time to see if this resolves your issue or not
    - If it doesn't then try opening private browsing/incognito mode of your browser and try logging into Story from there
If you are able to login then you should try clearing cache and cookies of your browser

  • Hard Drive failed now time capsule connecting to backup volume for hours

My main hard drive went bad. I had a spare in my machine. I installed osx on the spare and then migrated all of my data from my time capsule (which had worked like a champ). I am now running fine again and I have all my files, music, apps, everything I had before my hard drive went bad. Now the only problem I have is when I try to connect to time capsule now, there is a little window which reads "connecting to backup volume". It has been this way for hours and I suspect there is something amiss. If it were simply preparing and looking to see what has changed, it would have connected. Can anyone help me out on this problem? I would truly appreciate it.

    John,
    *Reboot Time Capsule*
Unplug the TC from the wall outlet.
    Wait 10-15 seconds.
    Re-plug it in again.
After it has restarted (30-60 seconds), does it show up in Airport Utilities?
If not try "Rescan" again from the File Menu.
Next, if you want to continue using the TC for Time Machine backups do the following:
    *Reselect Your Time Machine Disk*
Go to System Preferences --> Time Machine.
Use the slider on the left to turn “OFF” Time Machine.
    Click the "Change Disk..." button.
Select "None" and click "Stop Backing Up".
Now click "Choose Backup Disk" and reselect your backup hard disk again.
Now use the slider on the left to turn “ON” Time Machine.
Close System Preferences and try backing up again.
    *Full Backup After Full Restore*
Bear in mind that in all cases Time Machine will perform a full backup after a full restore. This is normal. Time Machine will resume incremental backups after the full backup has completed. To view previous backups, Control-click or right-click the Time Machine icon in your Dock or Option-click the Time Machine menu extra and Choose "Browse Other Time Machine Disks," then select your previous backup volume. You will enter Time Machine and be able to browse your previous back ups and restore files. (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1338)
So even on unchanged hardware, if you reinstall your system software and restore your user data, Time Machine starts anew, and you will not be able to resume backing up with the same history as the previous backups.
While there may be ways to fool/hack Time Machine into recognizing previous backups without performing another full backup, they are likely rather elaborate.
Ultimately, though, in a couple of months, all the effort to preserve old backups may seem pointless. After all, Time Machine will eventually purge away that data anyways as it replaces it with new files.
It may simply be easier to begin a fresh series of backups while saving the previous backups until your satisfied that you have enough history built up. Then delete the old backups.
Let us know if the above helped.
    Cheers!

  • Lion has been trying to load for hours

I clicked "Buy App" for Lion in the Apps store. It does nothing. What am I doing wrong?

Make sure that your system meets the technical specifications .  You can always pause it and try again later maybe your Internet connection will be fast later at night.

  • Spotlight has been reindexing for about an hour.  Should I panic???

Went the terminal route to reindex the hard drive. Everything seemed to work correctly but spotlight has been reindexing for at least an hour or more. The little dot in the middle of the magnifying glass continues to fade in and out as I recall and when hovering over it with the cursor it says indexing volumes. I did this about a year ago and I don't remember it taking this long. Is this normal? There's about 35-40 gigs of info on the computer. Will let it run overnight and then panic.
Can anyone enlighten me what to expect or what to do if it doesn't finish in a reasonable time.
    Thanks and be well,
    Elliot
Running 10.47 on an 1.8 iMac

When I reindex mine take an hour or so, 40-50GB on a 7200RPM notebook drive. I've had really good luck using the Spotlight Privay pane to reset indexing.
If it doesn't finish when you need it to, you should be able to just drag the hard drive into the Spotlight Preferences Privacy pane and reboot. Once you're logged back in, open the Privacy pane and remove the hard drive to restart indexing.
When I do it, I don't even need to reboot, but I'm suggesting it because there is already an index process running.

  • HT203177 I have not backed up my computer using Time Machine since before I updated to Mavericks.  It has been "preparing backup" for a half hour at least and shows no indication of how long this may take.  Is something wrong?

I have not backed up my computer using Time Machine since before I updated to Mavericks.  It has been "preparing backup" for a half hour at least and shows no indication of how long this may take.  Is something wrong?

No. TM has to look through your entire drive contents and copy them all. This will take some time.
Once the first backup is made, then subsequent backup will be much quicker, depending on how much data has changed since the last one.

  • Number of times main memory has been unloaded in last 24 hours "0"

    Hello Experts,
I am getting  error "BIA server is overloaded"  in RSDDBIAMON2 tcode.
    Description is below:
    BIA server is overloaded
    Message no. RSD_TREX154
    Diagnosis
The SAP NetWeaver BI Accelerator server is overloaded. Either there has recently been a forced unload of the BIA main memory, ort he total volume of loaded data exceeds the limit of 50% of the available main memory.
Both these situations negatively impact the stability of the BIA server.
    Procedure
    You have two options:
Decrease the volume of data in the BIA: Delete BIA indexes that you do not currently need or that you do not urgently require.
Contact your BIA hardware partner and carry out a new sizing for the BIA hardware.
    Procedure for System Administration
By default, this message only appears as a warning in processes that index large volumes of data in the BIA. You can use administration parameters to specify this warning as an error message as well. This causes all index processes to terminate if the error occurs.
    To do this, execute program RSDDTREX_ADMIN_MAINTAIN with parameters Object= DONT_IGNORE_BIA_OVERLOAD, Value = X, and INSERT/UPDATE = X.
    Diagnois says
    1) The total volume of loaded data exceeds the limit of 50% of the available main memory,I have already checked the disk used for storing the indexes  and it is not more than 50% of the BW Accelerator main memory.
2)There has recently been a forced unload of the BIA main memory:  As per error details  Number of times main memory has been unloaded in last 24 hours: '0'  ie no unloaded had happened in last 24 hours.
Please help me how i can solve this erro as there is not unload happened and also disk usage under control.
    Regards,
    Akshay

    hi,
    1) You can check the traces via the trex standalone tool trexadmin or transaction TREXADMIN. You must provide more details to get an analyze. Was there running a lot of process chains at this time? Have you checked the memory monitoring of the BWA blades?
    2) transaction TREXADMIN -> tab version..
You can try going through SAP notes which help with high memory issues.
Sometimes, the rfc server sometimes takes a lot of memory and doesn't free it afterwards.
    Thanks,
    Sheen

Computer iMac7,1 has been giving sundry problems for sometime. Within the last six weeks I have reinstalled the OS (Snow Leopard),without affecting the overall contents of the hard drive.
±3 weeks later the problems became more serious and I againreinstalled the OS and installed OS 6.6.7 from the internet.
I used the option to restore from the external backup driveand went back some time as it was my intention to reinstall individualcomponent in an attempt to find out where the problem might lie. This hasintroduced an entirely new problem! If I open Time Machine from the desktop itappears that all backups from late 2009 to June 2011 are intact. But, in thiscase there are none of the restore functions &c on screen. The latter areonly shown if Time Machine is opened from the menu bar or from the dock but, inthis case, available are only backups in late 2009!
I also opened the Apple Hardware Test in an attempt toestablish the nature of the problem. The ‘quick’ version said there’s nothingwrong; the more detailed one reported “Error detected, 4HD/11/40000004.” I haveagain tried to employ this test but nothing I do can induce it to open!!!
What to do? I need help urgently and would appreciate anyadvice that offers solutions to the problem.

To check your S.M.A.R.T status open disk utility and click on your drive and then click on the info icon.
