Spotlight has stopped working properly. Even when a known file is entered (with full file name) in search, it fails to find it. It finds some things, but is not to be depended upon. Any ideas?

Try reindexing spotlight: Spotlight: How to re-index folders or volumes - Apple Support
If you still have problems, open Console app, select All Messages, then search for mds in the search field. Then search for mdworker. See if there are any messages indicating it is having problems with certain files.
You can also delete the index altogether and cause it to reindex with a command in Terminal. I have always assumed the method above will do the same, but I'm not certain. You must run this command while  logged into an admin account. Copy the whole line and paste it into Terminal.
    sudo mdutil -E /
sudo temporarily elevates your privileges and will ask for your password. When you type it in, there won't be any response in the Terminal. Just type it and hit return.

  • Spotlight has stopped working on my brand new iMac

I've had my new 17" Intel iMac for one day...and Spotlight has all of a sudden stopped working.
It happened when I connected the G4 iMac to the new one but before I even accessed the G4. I tried to search for "Migration" using Spotlight and it didn't work. The 2 Macs were not even communicating yet so the old one could not have corrupted the new one.
Any ideas on how I can get SL to work again? I've done some searches but don't really understand what the solutions are. There are no files at all on my iMac as it is brand new. All I have done is use Safari and iTunes.
    Help!

The thing to remember about Spotlight on a new Mac is that it needs some time to itself to contemplate working for you, its new master, and to index your entire new HDD.
The Mac OS from the factory is a quick burn and Spotlight hasn't indexed anything. Plus it needs time to index new files that you begin installing. Until it indexes everything it won't work too well.

  • Q10 synching to my computer has stopped working -why

can anyone suggest why something that was working has just suddenly stopped? Neither calendar nor contacts are now being applied to the Q10. My PC is a Dell machine running windows 7 and everthing was fine one day and then not the next day. Backing up the Q10 to the PC still seems to be working perfectly well. Hoping someone has some ideas?

Did you make any changes to your computer the day before or on the day it stopped working, such as Windows updates, add a new program, delete a program, run a scan.
What is your anti virus program, do you use any registry editors, or other security programs.
Can you think of some other info that might help diagnose the issue. Which browser do you use as the Default.

  • Spotlight has stopped working

Last night my Mac crashed: the screen stopped updating, but the cursor remained movable but was very laggy. It stayed like this for five minutes until I killed the power.
After the restart, if I search for anything in Spotlight, nothing happens. If I click out of Spotlight and then back in again it says "no results found" even for things that I know it should find, like "safari".
    I tried:
    sudo su
    mdutil -i off /
    mdutil -E /
    mdutil -i on /
but after rebuilding the index I'm still having the same problems. I also repaired permissions on the drive.
    Any ideas?

Henry is in the right direction, but there might be a need to remove a file that prevents indexing of files - as many - including myself - has experienced that just trying to turn on indexing is not enough. One problem seems to be an "invisible" files that tell the system not to index. It has to be removed. This is best done with these steps - thanks to Jamie Curmi in this procedure:
    1. Login in to your server as an administrator.
    2. Open the Terminal application (in your /Applications/Utilities folder)
    3. Type the following exactly as written in to the Terminal:
    sudo rm /.metadataneverindex
It will ask you for your password. I have never seen this file, so you may get a "file not found" error - in which case move on to step 4 anyway.
    4. Type the following in to the Terminal:
    sudo mdutil -i on /

    5. Spotlight in the right corner of your server login should indicate it is indexing, and before long will start working.

  • Spotlight has stopped working in finder!!!!

I'm having a major Spotlight problem. This morning I tried to perform a search in the finder but no results came up, so I tried another one. Again nothing. So I checked my smart folders, all empty. This despite the fact spotlight is working fine everywhere else. The top right hand corner, mail, everywhere.
I made a phone call to apple technical support but they hand no clue what was causing it and recommended I reinstall OS X. This seems a tad extreme to me so I though I would check here if anyone has any advice before I take this pretty major step.
    Can anyone help?

    Overhaze,
This is indeed an extreme solution and probably a nightmare you could do without. It is not the first time I've seen this suggested, in these forums, as a desperate measure. One should NEVER have to reinstall the entire system for something as small as not being able to find a file.
    But that's Spotlight for you.
And anyway, there is no guarantee that by reinstalling your entire OS (with everything that entails) that Spotlight would still not let you down.
All I can suggest is - abandon Spotlight as your way of finding files, and keep visiting these forums until you find some better suggestion.
Instead of spotlight there is Easyfind, which is reliable. You can download it for free at the following link.

  • Elements Organizer 12 Has Stopped Working -- Why?

The program opens fine. Then, while sitting idle the organizer keeps crashing..... Why?

Two suggestions:  the first one is a workaround. You just have to drill down your program file tree to Adobe Photoshop Elements Organizer and find the .exe file - the one specifically for Organizer, not Elements.  Make a shortcut to that file on your desktop and it will open Organizer. The second suggestion resolved the problem altogether for me. I actually called Dell and after working with several different techs over several different days, I talked to a tech in premium support who was excellent. I discovered from them that it is actually a problem with the windows system files. I have 8.1.  I went through a "refresh" on my computer which rebuilt all the files. Then reinstalled Adobe as well as my other programs again and Photoshop Elements Organizer works from the standard desktop shortcut.

  • I upgraded to lion and Spotlight has stopped working.  I have added and removed volumes in Spotlight Preferences, but still no joy.

I belive I stopped the index at the initial launch after install.  I can't find a way to restart the indexing.
Below is an example of what happens when I search using Spotlight.
    Any help appreciated.

I have Harman Kardon Soundsticks but they are connected via USB. They are recognised without any drivers - I have connected them to three Macs and they never needed drivers.
If you connect via minijack, I don't see how the Mac can recongise them other than compensate according to the impedence, but I may be wrong.
Do you get output from them when you select Line Out or Headphones from Audio System Preferences?

    Hi ra az,
    Which OS are you using?
Try installing the latest update v11.0.10 and check.
Have you tried repairing Reader from the 'Help' menu already?
Also try disabling the protected mode in Reader and launch and check.

Iphoto on my macbook pro has stopped working. It comes up with a message saying that the library is either being used by another user or it is unreadable. Any ideas why I should be receiving this message?
"Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable"
    Offered solution doesn't work:
Shut down and restart your computer, and then open iPhoto again. If the problem persists, try rebuilding your photo library. To do this, quit iPhoto, and then reopen it while keeping the Option and Command keys pressed. You can also try restoring your photo library from a backup.
I have already copied my photographs to the a library manager but when I tried to reuse iphoto and import the photos back into iphoto, it would not let me.
I can't download photographs from my iphone or my digital camera.
Any ideas on how I can solve this problem?
There is a possibility that when I went to update applications that I started to install Mavericks which I then interrupted and cancelled. I am not definite that this caused this problem but it was at about the same time as when this problem started.
    Many thanks,
    Ed

I have already copied my photographs to the a library manager but when I tried to reuse iphoto and import the photos back into iphoto, it would not let me.
You can't "copy" your photos to the "library manager", there is just no way to any such thing.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • ITunes has stopped working error message on my Dell Latitude E6520 when trying to sync photos to my iPhone 3GS.  Why?!

For some reason, I keep getting the "iTunes has stopped working" error message on my Dell Latitude E6520 when trying to sync photos to my iPhone 3GS.  I am using Windows 7 on my 64-bit computer.  iTunes will begin to optimize the photos in the folder I have directed it to (I am trying to load almost 3000 photos and videos), and it will go through optimizing all of them singularly, then get to the step where it says "optimizing" again, but does so in bigger groups.  It will get to about 2000, and then the error message "iTunes has stopped working" will pop up, and say that "Windows must close the program and will search for a solution, and if it finds one, it will notify me".  Why can't I sync these photos, and what can I do?  Thanks so much for the help, I really appreciate it!

Same problem here! Moreover, for some reason, the pictures in my iPhone 3GS somehow have been divided into 2 folders, Photos and Medialibrary. And when I open iPhone as a folder through the explorer I can see only the Photos folder, but cannot see the Medialibrary folder which stores the photos taken before updating/upgrading the iPhone and getting separated folders!!! What the hack with all of this?!!! When I connect iPhone to PC it automatically opens iTunes and starts syncronizing it, but at the process of OPTIMIZING the photos (and according to the number of photos it shows, I see that it tries to syncronize that invisible Medialibrary folder) the process suddenly stops and error message pops out Tried the sync test, tried the button DEBUG in that pop out message, but NOTHING HELPS!!! Also, when I open the Medialibrary in my iPhone, the screen get sblack all through scrolling it down, only the video clips are shown there... >.<
So, could you, apple developers, please, explain WHAT THIS PROBLEM IS ABOUT?!!!!!! FIX IT! I am getting ****** of to spend hours at the computer and reading those lame advises which do not help at all! I have my own things to do except reading your support websites. And I payed for the product ready to use, but not a halfproduct which problems should further be solved somehow by users..
