Spotlight in Time Machine

I have noticed strange behavior of spotlight when searching in time machine backup.
I open a folder, search for a file inside it (it is found) and then go to time machine. When folder is open in current state, the file stays found, but if I begin moving back it disappears (and I know for sure it is present for a long time, so it should be found). Sometimes I can find it if I switch between searching this mac or current folder, sometimes not.
Does spotlight really work worse for backups? I'm just afraid one moment I really need it it can let me down.
Can I do anything to fix it?

All that Spotlight does is to index the TM backup drive no differently than any other drive. If there is a problem then it may be with the backup drive or with the Spotlight index. Open Spotlight preferences, click on the Privacy tab, then drag the icon for your TM backup drive into the Privacy window. Wait one minute then delete the entry. This should force Spotlight to reindex the drive. If the index isn't corrupted this may fix the problem for you.
If it doesn't, then visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on Spotlight for more suggestions on how you can remove the Spotlight index to force a whole new index.

  • How can I search the time capsule using spotlight or time machine?

Every time I try to use spotlight in finder, to find anything on the time capsule, spotlight automatically turns to the mac.
While using timemachine the connection to the time machine greys out.
How can I use these options, or different options to search the time capsule?

I've been looking for the star wars gui, but I only ended up watching scifi movies all night.
    LOL..
Oh well it is new year.. seems as good a use of time as any.
Click on the time machine icon in the dock.. that opens finder inside the backup.

  • Negative Effects of Turning off Spotlight on Time Machine Drive

My external WD HD used exclusively for TM was going into what seemed to be an infinite spotlight reindexing loop after I upgraded to 10.6.8.  The only way I have been able to ge it to stop was to select that drive under spotlight privacy settings.  Does anyone know of any negative effects of doing this, other than the obvious negative of not being able to use spotlight on my TM backups?
    Many thanks!

@sanjampet; What does a link to Xsan servers have to do with Time Machine?

Read Pondini's excellent TM articles; http://pondini.org/TM/Home.html
Spotlight can't read the TM volume; it should be excluded as you have done.

According to my console log file, Spotlight is having trouble with my Time Machine volume

The net result is that the drive always shows as busy. I can't eject it and I get the "Failed to create backup index" error message.
Does anyone know of a fix for this. If I used a utility such as Spotless to turn indexing off on the TM volume, will it also disable my ability to use TM to restore a file since the drive is no longer indexed?
    Thanks
BTW, just happened in 10.5.4, but first noticed the symptoms is 10.5.3.
    Thanks
    Steve

there is no need to have TM drive indexed. it will only confuse both TM and spotlight and is likely to cause problems of the kind you are having. add it to spotlight's privacy pane. that will have no effect on using spotlight from inside TM interface to search backups.

  • Spotlight and Time Machine broken after restore/upgrade

I've found a few similar threads to this but none of those solutions has worked for me.
Two things happened at nearly the same time, so I don't exactly know the source of my problem:
I upgraded my old MacBook Pro (approx. Oct 2010, 2.66GHz I think, 300GB-ish HD) from Lion to Mountain Lion
The hard drive on my old MacBook Pro developed a terminal fault, so I had to buy a new one (8GB, 750GB HD) and restore a month-old Time Machine backup from my external drive.
I can't remember whether my last Time Machine backup to my external drive was before or after I upgraded to Mountain Lion.
Now I'm on OS X 10.8.2 on this new machine and I have two problems that seem to co-exist for a lot of other people too:
Spotlight won't index: this is f***ing infuriating, I love spotlight and I use it all the time. When I first restored from the TM backup I think the old index restored with the backup as I did get a decent number of search results (both in spotlight and in MS Outlook), but new files didn't seem to get recognised. I tried adding my hard drive to the exclusion list and removing it again in an attempt to get it to rebuild the index, but all that did was wipe the old index without building a new one, so now I get no spotlight results whatsoever. I tried this solution and sadly it hasn't worked either. Basically I can't search for anything. Even applications (which I like to launch from spotlight) don't appear. All I get is "estimating indexing time", and it never gets any further.
Time Machine won't back up: the first time I tried to backup my new machine it got a few hundred megabytes in before stalling; then a few hundred kilobytes in the next time I tried; and now it just doesn't get anywhere at all. The external drive I'm trying to backup to is recognised fine, I can see all the other files on it, and Time Machine seems to know that it's there, but the backup gets nowhere.
There are reports of this kinds of crap all over the Apple Support forums, but no definitive answer, especially for 10.8.2.
I could really do with some help on this. I need a backup before I screw another laptop, and I need spotlight to survive day-to-day life.
    Thanks,
    Craig

Hi Craig - I had the exact same problem - I'm using an old early 2009 MacBook Pro upgraded to 8 Gb Ram, 1 TB internal Hitachi HD, 10.8.2 - tried the fixes suggested - got it to work with these steps- everybodies mileage is different but hopefully it works for you as well.
    a) I repaired disk permissions with Onyx (free utility)  and then  started  up with Command-R using Disk Utility to repaired/check the Volume (harddisk checked out fine but the volume needed some minor repairs )- Onyx repair disk permission seems to go deeper -had to reinstall some apps - don't know if this solved it-seems to bring it back to the default state - you might get away with doing all from Disk Utility (but starting up with  Command-R)
    b) restart from my internal hd
    c) downloaded the 10.8.2 combo update ( not the incremental shell update or whatever you call it which automatically gets installed with software update - combo update installs everything fresh from the .0 version)
    d) with  Onyx  I deactivated spotlight and erased the spotlight index
    d) restart
    e) started TM backup - prep took pretty long 30 minutes but then 450 GB got backed up in 6 hours to my external HD which is fast enough for me
    f) activated spotlight and 450 Gb were indexed in 9 hours or so
    g) for 2 days everything runs fast and very responsive
    best,
    Franz

  • Spotlight interfering with Time Machine?

    Hi!
I've been going through some of the posts discussing Spotlight and Time Machine issues but couldn't find anything related to my current issue. Here is what's happening:
For no reason (or an unknown one), but ever since I have upgraded from Snow Leopard to Lion, Time Machine (Time Capsule) has difficulties with the backup disk and quits. It also shows a strange behavior in actually mounting the Time Machine Volume, but without assigning the Time Machine icon (it shows the default white mounted volume icon instead). It also opens a finder window and points to the Backup.backupd files. In parallel to mounting the Time Machine volume, mds spits out some messages, which makes me think that they both might interfere. The entire log is here:

I can temporarily repair the issue by either following Pondini's advice and mounting the sparsebundle and do a repair using Diskutil (which never shows any errors) or unmounting the volume using umount -f and (prior to that) killing the mds process. Unfortunately, there is no indication whether Spotlight is acutally doing something with the Time Machine (but something prevents the drive from unmounting, I guess mds).
It would be great if anyone can help and shed some light on this issues.
    Many thanks,
    Geo

  • Time Machine stopped backing up; Spotlight not working

Recently, Spotlight search stopped returning results for applications, and no amount of reseting Spotlight or rebuilding the index has helped. I had given up on that, then today I noticed that the last backup Time Machine completed was on 10 January 2013. Both scheduled backups and manual backups get terminated early, after backing up 30MB or so.
system.log in Console displays these messages for Spotlight and Time Machine respectively:

I have verified both my startup disk (XXX) and the external hard disk (YYY) I use for Time Machine, and both "appear to be OK".
Something is wrong with my system but I'm not sure what. Can someone help please? I'm using an iMac10,1 running 10.8.2.

    Hi Linc,
    Thanks for replying.
I managed to backup with Time Machine in safe mode and I can backup manually after rebooting. Spotlight still did not work normally in safe mode, but it appears to be working fine now… I am not sure if my problems have been resolved though.
Could you please take a look at the Console messages and, if possible, explain what they mean or what errors were encountered? I would like to know the cause of Spotlight and Time Machine's failure, and if it is possible to prevent.

  • Time machine preparing forever and spotlight estimating indexing time

    hey guys,
Im having two problems that seem to be related. time machine gets stuck on preparing with the following error in console:
    Jul 18 17:03:19 Macintosh-5 /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[6926]: Waiting for index to be ready (905 > 0)
Spotlight is also acting up and freezes indefinitely whilst estimating indexing time with the following console error:
Jul 18 17:03:44 Macintosh-5 mds[94]: (Error) Server: mdsync launch failed: (ipc/send) invalid destination port
I have not been able to find much on this last error on support forums. Any ideas? I have erased all spotlight indices, reset PRAM, this problems occurs when indexing both the internal and external hard drives. (The drive i am using for time machine has worked in the past.) I have also repaired disk permission etc. Any solutions without reinstalling leopard as the reason why i am trying to back up is so I can do a reinstall then!
    Thanks!

I had this exact problem yesterday (Waiting for index to be ready (905 > 0)). I rebooted with the shift key held down, rebooted again, and rebuilt my Spotlight index. Now there seems to be a conflict between Spotlight and Time Machine:
Aug 26 05:03:08 Musa /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[702]: Waiting for Spotlight to finish indexing /Volumes/Backup of Musa/Backups.backupdb
I thought of adding the backup drive to Spotlight's exclusion list, but doesn't the backup drive need to be indexed by Spotlight for it to work with Time Machine?

  • Recurring Time Machine and Spotlight problems

When I first installed Yosemite, the first TM backup hung on “Preparing backup”. I rebooted, and the hourly backups worked for a few hours, and then a backup again hung on “Preparing backup”. Likewise, Spotlight worked for a while and then hung. I re-indexed the hard drive and rebooted. Spotlight worked for a while and then again hung. I’m getting tired of having to reboot to get these things to work. Can I simply redownload Yosemite and re-install it over the current installation to see if a re-installation will help?

    Hi Bill ...
It may be corrupted Spotlight or Time Machine preferences.
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Spotlight.plist
Click Go then move the com.apple.Spotlight.plist file to the Trash.
If that didn't help, do the same thing for:    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist

  • Time Machine Drive Ejecting Itself--Spotlight culprit?

    Hi,
I have to backup my MBP ASAP so that I can take it to Apple for repairs. When I first got the computer, I thought both my external drives were ejecting randomly so I never thought that Time Machine was the issue. The other hard drive proved to have a faulty wire and solved that problem, but I still can't seem to determine why my Time Machine drive keeps randomly ejecting. I searched this and various other forums for an answer and narrowed down my problems to my antivirus and spotlight indexing. At first, the harddrive would last anywhere from 0mins-45mins before being ejected. I began checking the console logs and notices some instances where my antivirus was running at the same moment. I disabled scanning of the TM backup and saw the biggest improvement in how long the drive was able to stay connected and make backups before ejecting. It stayed on for close to 6-7 hours.
Then, it ejected randomly again and I checked the console messages and saw spotlight returned some indexing errors. This time the ejection made the drive unreadable and I had to reformat. I backed up again and it kept ejecting itself early on in the backup process with the same spotlight errors. I added the entire drive to Spotlight's privacy list, and it managed to complete the entire backup. The drive then stayed connected without ejecting for another 7-9 hours the next day without any random ejects before the spotlight errors struck again. The drive is still listed in the privacy and it is still excluded from antivirus scanning. I have repaired the disk several times and gotten the "Appears to be OK" message. I even reformatted the drive and did another complete backup hoping that would take care of any corrupt Spotlight indexing. I have also rebuilt the entire index for both Spotlight on the internal and external drive. At this point, I need to run the backup as I am getting my hard drive swapped. What I am most concerned about is, even if I get another backup successfully on the drive, will I run into any problem using Setup/Migration assistant (random ejects, freezes, corrupt data) when its time to transfer my info back to the new install of OS X and be left without my data altogether? I also just need to this work... as what is the point of a backup solution, if you can't rely on it to make it through a day without crashing..
Below is the latest log file from Console. Any help will be greatly appreciated as I have went through the same steps that proved successful for others who had the same issue before me.

Unless you're running Windoze on your Mac, you may not need any anti-virus software at all. See Thomas Reed's [Mac Virus Guide|http://www.reedcorner.net/thomas/guides/macvirus]. But yes, keep your TM drive excluded.
The drive then stayed connected without ejecting for another 7-9 hours the next day without any random ejects before the spotlight errors struck again.
Excluding your TM drive from Spotlight doesn't stop all indexing of it: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/8991.html
What I am most concerned about is, even if I get another backup successfully on the drive, will I run into any problem using Setup/Migration assistant (random ejects, freezes, corrupt data) when its time to transfer my info back to the new install of OS X and be left without my data altogether?
The backups will probably be ok, but if your internal HD is corrupted, as it seems to be, that corruption may be transferred to them.

Now that's quite odd, indeed: the /Library/Logs folder is supposed to be +*excluded automatically+* from backups! That's controlled by a special plist deep inside OSX, so it's been altered, corrupted, or ignored, which is not a good sign.
Ordinarily, I'd suggest downloading and installing the 10.6.4 "combo" update, but that may not be enough -- you may need to reinstall OSX, too, and depending on what's wrong with your system, you may not have time, and if your system is misbehaving, it may not work anyway. If you want to, the info and download are available at: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1048 Be sure to do a +Repair Permissions+ via Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder) afterwards.

That's from the mds process, used by both Spotlight and Time Machine.

Another indication of possible corruption in your installation of OSX.

It's always a good idea to keep secondary backups, since all hardware fails, sooner or later, and no backup app is perfect. Given the apparent corruption of your installation of OSX, I'd recommend that even more strongly. See #27 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum) for some suggestions.
Sorry not to have better news or more concrete suggestions.

  • Time Machine and Spotlight

I've been having mixed results with Time Machine and Spotlight. It seems to be able to find any files that were indexed before the original backup, but it doesn't find anything that was added after the original (ie from incremental backups). I don't have the Time Machine drive in Privacy in Spotlight prefs.
Also, I can't search in Mail in Time Machine. Once I enter Time Machine mode, the search box goes gray for both the Now entry, and for all past backups too.
    Thanks for any help.

I second that. By default both Spotlight and Time Machine should be off. Or at least it should be possible to configure that, which comes handy when installing a new system, updating, etc. I do not want Spotlight or Time Machine to work until all is installed and updated.
On the other hand, it would be great if Spotlight did not require to re-index a new disk when all its contents have been copied from an older disk using the Migration Assistant. After all, the Spotlight index is also on the old disk, so copying such index should be quicker. Likewise, for the Time Machine volume: it should not be necessary to re-index the Time Machine volume, since copying the Spotlight index of the booting disk should be enough.
That way, the slow down and incompatibilities between Spotlight and Time Machine would we wiped out for ever.

  • WAKE UP APPLE. SpotLight & Time-Machine effectively non-functioning after 10.7.5 combo update

I have just done a complete clean restore from Snow Leopard DVD, doing all its Updates. Then, installed Lion from App store and did the 10.7.5 Combo update. (All that took 2 days).
    Time-Machine and Spotlight non functioning....
Turned off Spotlight and Time-Machine got my apps & data back...
Turned off Time-Machine and turned on Spotlight - nothing.
Followed every combination of the many many helpful tips in this discussion group (involving Onyx, Terminal, Console, Privacy, removing all external drives etc etc). Finally Spotlght began to index.....
3 days later, it was about 60% complete but slowing down. I rebooted (nothing else) and now Spotlight has restarted the Index once again and I have 3 weeks to wait now.... (Ihave about 600 Gbyte of data on a 1 Tbyte disk)
Many others have had similar problems
So clearly there is a significant bug in the system - with no sure fire workaround - and no apparent reaction from Apple staff about what they are doing or what sequence of actions one needs to take to resolve this issue.
This is sad - Apple is going the same way as IBM, DEC, Microsoft, Adobe - loading functioning systems with more and more bells and whistles until finally they trip over their own feet with the complexity of the whole works.
I feel entitled to moan - having owned nothing but Apple computers for 30 years.
(I tried to upgrade to Mountain Lion two weeks ago, but the App store installation just froze and Apple say the DVD drive is a dying species and will supply no disks or other media to do proper restores.....!)
ANY IDEAS ABOUT HOW TO WAKE APPLE PEOPLE UP!

Time Machine just doesn't seem to function with lion or Mountaain Lion. I don't know about Spotlight, but I use Intego Backup Assistant for my backup and its doing fine.

  • Time Machine and Spotlight Configuration (in 10.5.3 ...)

I've just sent Apple the following suggestion that I wish would be implemented in future Leopard update. Just wondering if some of you share my opinion.
    Here goes :
    Time Machine and Spotlight Configuration
Wouldn't it be sooooo much simpler to be able to tell Time Machine which drive to backup and which drive to backup onto, once and for all, and to tell Spotlight which drive to index, once and for all, instead of constantly having to open their Preferences and tell which of them NOT to backup or to backup onto, or which one NOT to index each and every time an external device is connected to the Mac ?
It is as if your TV set required you to deselect 99 or so channels in order for you to watch a given channel !
That would save SO much time having to rush to both Preference Panes upon connection of any device, in order stop those processor hogs from mobilizing 98% of processor activity for long minutes during which our Super Turbo machines litterally crawl to my original Mac-512's speed.
This would be a one-time setting for most users, and neither of those utilities would be impaired by such a simplification of their configuration.
Unless of course I am completely missing some important aspect of their functionnality.

That way, the slow down and incompatibilities between Spotlight and Time Machine would we wiped out for ever.

  • Time Machine formatted itself on my external drive despite pressing "Don't Use"

I have an external hard drive that has been in use on/off for years. I even had backups on it (not using Time Machine). I mounted this hard drive, it was taking a while to mount. A prompt came up to ask if I wanted to use this drive as a time machine backup. I said "Don't Use". It hanged. Meanwhile, I opened disk utility twice. Both I had to force quit. After a while I relaunched finder.
Assuming it would cancel the time machine prompt. Only when did the finder eventually relaunch that the drive mounted to see that all my files where gone and looking in Thermal under ls -a to see their we're spotlight and time machine files along with some oddly named thing. About 1GB Is in use on the drive(I had much more that a gig on it). It is a TB drive
Here is the output from the ls -a on the volume
    ._.com.apple.timemachine.donotpresent
    .com.apple.timemachine.donotpresent
    .Spotlight-V100
    .fseventsd
    .Trashes
    USBCˆö?␀.␀€␀
    ._.Trashes
Anyway would a tool like this (http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk) help get back my files and format back to what I had previously? Or I am going in the wrong direction? What should I do?

    Thank you Thomas,
I should have mentioned that the drive is formated as FAT32 and I  ran verify disk on the drive and this error keep coming up until I stop the process :
"2013-02-16 12:06:23 +0000: / has entries after end of directory
    2013-02-16 12:06:23 +0000: Truncate? no
    2013-02-16 12:06:23 +0000: Extend? no"
Will the tools mentioned in you post work with FAT 32? I am looking at Data Rescue 3 becuase of the FileIQ functionality since I know I have obsure file formats on there
Does this help or it is irrelevant?

  • Time machine won't back up like it used to.

After months of an almost flawless relationship with my computer & external drives, time machine has found a way to ruin things. I searched the internet wide but still can't find a solution that works for my situation.
The problem started when I purchased a new drive to store data on. My goal was to organize the drives - music/video, photos, and cpu. I have been using a 1tb lacie drive for backing up with time machine successfully, but adding an additional drive seems to have confused thing. I also changed the name of the old drive (not the back up drive - so I thought it wouldn't matter - but now I suspect it i did). The data hasn't really changed at all , it's just been moved to different locations.
Now when i try to back up
-my machine pin wheels (i hate that beach ball!). everything loads slowly. typing this is taking forever.
-running applications freeze without being able to force quit
-my computer won't shut down properly
-i had to unplug my drives several times just to regain control of my computer
    - i have to use the power button to force my computer on & off.
and messages i've received about the process
-"preparing" for over 24 hours with no results
-"Event store UUIDs don't match for volume"
-"Node requires deep traversal" which it never seems to get through
    -"No pre-backup thinning needed"
i tried to delete previous back ups in order to make more room on the drive. I deleted each back up - by date- in time machine , but the files remain on the drive. they don't appear to have really deleted and each date appears with the message "zero date not marked for delete" and listed as "partially deleted back up"
spotlight also used to hold up the process so i excluded all 3 of my external drives from indexing.
i have been having a particularly hard time with itunes. i moved the library to a larger external drives. At this point it won't start up or quit. Only when time machine is off will it work normally.
i would post the entire log(s) but there are so many and with each change they've been almost completely different. Overall the result has been the same - time machine is not doing it's job.
most recently i've received Error: (-36)
I am trying to avoid reformatting the drive just in case some of my files get lost in the confusion, or i need to restore from a back up.
any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

Renaming a drive that's being backed-up means Time Machine thinks it's a new drive. On the next backup, it will back it up completely. That should cause one large, lengthy backup.
The symptoms you list all sound like something is corrupted on one or more of the drives, or is hanging your backups.
i tried to delete previous back ups in order to make more room on the drive.
Unfortunately, other than using special "deny everybody everything" permissions, Apple doesn't do a very good job of warning folks to *+never, ever, move, change, or delete anything in your Time Machine backups via the Finder+* as that can hopelessly corrupt them.
Normally, you shouldn't have to delete backups manually, as TM will delete your oldest backups automatically when it needs room for new ones, unless you have the +Warn when old backups are deleted+ box checked in TM Preferences > Options. But in some cases you may want to delete a particular backup, or all backups of selected items (like the previous backups of a drive you've renamed). Time Machine provides a way to do that. See #12 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip* at the top of this forum.
spotlight also used to hold up the process so i excluded all 3 of my external drives from indexing.
Yes, sometimes Spotlight and Time Machine backups conflict, so we do recommend excluding the TM drive from Spotlight at least temporarily when they occur, especially on an initial backup.
Your backups are likely corrupted. You can try a +*Repair Disk+* (not permissions) on them via Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder), which will take quite a while and may not succeed; or you can reformat your TM drive completely and let TM start over.
You should also probably check all your drives/partitions via #C1 in the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip* at the top of this forum. If one or more are not set up properly, that can be a cause of trouble, too.
After all that, I'd suggest excluding all the externals from TM temporarily, via TM Preferences > Options, and running a backup of only your internal HD. If that works ok, then remove one exclusion and run another backup. Repeat until done, or the problems start again.
If they do start again, you'll know which drive is the problem and can address it.
By the way, what's the total size of the data on your internal HD and all the externals you want TM to back up? Note that to work well, TM usually needs 2-3 times that much space, although it may work with 1.5 or so, at least for a while.
