Spotlight: Include System Files by Default?

Hello,
I like to use Spotlight as a general system cleaning preference, deleting old applications and their preference files, which are oftentimes in different locations.
Leopard allows one to include system files (including preferences) in Spotlight searches, but this is not enabled by default. Rather, one has to click the button after running the search and manually choose this option.
I would like to have this option enabled by default so this step is not repeated. Is there a way?
Thank you in advance.

Try this. Click on the Desktop, CMD+F, set it up the way you want to, put in some generic search term, such as test, save it, open it, change the search term, and you should be good to go. There's no known way to change the defaults (at least i haven't tried). In Tiger modifying the default_smart.plist buried in the Finder.app did the trick, but I haven't been able to work out the salient details to do that in Leopard.

  • Getting Spotlight to Search System Files by Default !??!

9 out of every 10 times I need to use spotlight, it's to find a system file. Usually something involving latex. I know that I can modify a finder search by choosing "other" + "System Files" + "include". But i'd rather just be able to turn that on by default. Is there a command line entry that I will force to spotlight to always search system files?

  • Reserve copy includes system files?

why I have the question is that I am not sure what the reserve copy includes when done through iTunes to the computer.
I have an assumption that my current iPhone is not officially unlocked, so if I make a reserve copy of it and then restore it to my new officially unlocked phone. Will such reserve copy ruin it? Or it does not replace system files, but just apps, data etc?

Have a look at this article about the content of your backup, the backup does not include the firmware for your device.

  • A way to search System Files and by File Name as default?

    Hello.
Is there a way I can make the default search both include searching by File Name and searching System Files?
I know I can make a saved search, but this just is one extra step. I'd like to the default behavior of the Finder be to search system files, and default to searching by File Name rather than contents.
    Thanks.

If you bring up the Finder window search using Command-Shift-F you will get the default of a file name search (unfortunately it has no criteria whatsoever, so if you want to modify the search with an added criterion you have to click the wee little + icon).
There is no way to automatically include system files.

  • Self-created invisible system file not found via Finder's Find command

I need to see what is being created on my hard disk. To achieve that, I create a test file, call it .new in TextEdit, remove the hidden .rtf extension, and place it in one of the folders in /Library/Application Support. Then, I use Finders Find command, and ask to search This Mac, Created date: today, System files are included, File visibility Visible or Invisible, leaving the input field (for file contents or name) blank. The newly created file isn't found. I type its name into the input field, with the same result. I change its name to .new.plist . Same result. Suspecting that "System files" acutally means system files and doesn't include the Library on the top level, I place that same item in /System/Library/PodcastProducer. Same result.
Seriously, this is entirely incomprehensible. The Find command obviously doesn't do what it says it does. Could anyone tell me how to get it to, or name some alternative?
    Thanks a lot.

Actually you CAN get ressults for .whatever files and folders. I created a saved search for my home folder with the criterion of "File visibility::Invisible Items" and then "None of the following are true::Name contains" DS_Store, Icon or localized. The result is a list of 65 invisible items including things such as the files /Users/francine/Library/Preferences/ByHost/.GlobalPreferences.0017f20dca84.plis t (a dot file), /Users/francine/Library/Preferences/com.freeverse.5012 (something with the invisible flag set), the dot folder /Users/francine/.fontconfig, and many others of all of these types. I thought it was interesting that lots of them were inside the ~/Library folder, even though I did NOT specify including system files.
I don't know why the original poster can't get Spotlight, using the the Command-f method, to display dot files. When I was setting my own invisible items search up I did manage to crash the Finder once, so it may be that the query for invisible items is buggy. Here's the Raw Query:
    (true) && (((kMDItemFSInvisible = 1) && (!((kMDItemDisplayName = "\DS_Store"cd) || (kMDItemDisplayName = "\Icon"cd) || (kMDItemDisplayName = "\localized"cd)))))
If you go to a folder, do Command-f, then change from the default "Kind" to "Raw Query" and paste the above in as the query, you ought to get all the invisible files and folders, except the .DS_Store, Icon and localized files (of which there are likely hundreds of 'em in your home folder).

  • HT2531 Finder / Spotlight not finding files "containing ......."

I have a file named with a persons name and i have multiple files containing that same name, however when i search for that name i only get the file named with that name, not files containing that name. Very annoying, any suggestions, it used to work until I ran low on disc space, I since freed space but it still does not work

As baltwo eventually explained, you have to add the search criteria "System files" to your search, with the option "Include" selected, to find many items Spotlight otherwise excludes from search results. Alternately (& quite ridiculously), if your search is restricted to the parent folder containing the item, you don't need to add this.
For example, if you open /Library in the Finder, enter "Desktop Pictures" in the search box, you won't get it in the results with the default "This Mac" location, but if you click "Library" for the location, you will. (Yes, many users think this is bizarre, "what were they thinking?" behavior.)
What Spotlight considers "system files" is only slightly less bizarre, as you will probably discover once you start using it to broaden searches. For instance, Safari history items & Mail.app messages are not found unless you include system files, but many files like C Header Source files (in System/Library/Frameworks) are found without including system files in the search.
When it was introduced in Tiger, Spotlight was supposed to be a next-generation search engine, capable of accurately guessing what you were looking for (& filtering out what you weren't) with near-sentient intelligence. I think almost anyone who used that version will agree it did not achieve that lofty goal. Apple apparently agreed, or at least listened to the complaints enough to realize it needed rethinking. Unfortunately, what its designers came up with for the Leopard rethink feels like an early beta version, full of hastily implemented, quirky features that never got sorted out before it was released.
We can only hope that we won't have to wait for OS 10.6 for a more mature, less quirky version.

I've added an "Actionscript File", i.e. a File with no package/class that is included in an actionscript class.

  • Does a time machine backup also restore system files?

In my case, I've deleted a lot of system files including desktop wallpapers and stuff, because I split my drive into two partitions, and started running very low on space on my primary partition. Now, I want to go back to two partitions, but I am unable to. Hence I have to format my Mac to do so. What my question is is this. If I use Time Machine after formatting to restore a backup, does that also include system files, like wallpapers and etc., or only user files? What about my keychain, browser data like cookies and other user data from my applications? Does all of that come back too? If it does, then I think that the other system files might come back too, right? I specifically remember deleting files from the Application Support folder. Also, every time after finishing a backup, my disk takes hours for encrypting the backup. Is that normal?
    PS : I use Mavericks.

    Malcolm J. Rayfield wrote:

Download and reinstall Mavericks from the App Store.  It won't delete any user files.

It should not delete any user files.
The OP should backup before starting this, in case of error.

  • RMAN vs other system files

    Hi,
Can RMAN backups file other than database files ?
I want RMAN to backup a set of files that are related to our software. The files needs to be backuped at the same time the DB is for consistency.
the files are not owned by the oracle user.
Is there a "how-to" somewhere that can help me to include system files into a RMAN backup ?
    technical info :
    Oracle : 11.2.0.1 or 10.2.0.4
    OS : hp-ux itanium
    thanks

    Hello,

DB is for consistency. As previously posted, RMAN is used for Database only.
But, some applications has their own Backup tool. For instance, Oracle iAS has it's own Backup method.
So, you may check if your Application has an integrated Backup tool.
If not, you'll have to see with the software application support how to backup it consistently. You may have to stop some
    processes,... .

  • Deleted a system file, now nothing works

    Hi,
I downloaded and used a 3rd party file that changes the login window UI, but decided yesterday I wanted it back to normal, I had a backup of the original file already in the directory, so I deleted the file and double clicked the zip file (thinking stupidly this was it done).
But it appears I've deleted the file and the file didn't unzip and now my mac won't boot up at all, it's stuck in an endless blue screen loop at the login window.
    The directory is - System/Library/CoreServices/SecurityAgentPlugins
and the file itself in that folder is - loginwindow.bundle
So I've completely screwed things up, here is the things I have tried and failed:
    - Holding 'C' with Snow Leopard Installation CD (the CD is a bit scratched, don't know if that's relevant to it not working)
    - Holding 'C' with Leopard Installation CD
    - Booting into safe mode
    - Booting into single user mode (successfully) and tried /sbin/fsck -fy (it repaired something but it still doesn't boot)
I was hoping I could archive and install from the OS DVD, but for some reason it doesn't seem responsive (blank white screen, or at one point just shutdown my macbook).
All because of one system file?
Is there anyway I can unzip the file back to where it should be? Is there anyway I can archive and install from single user mode? Is there anyway I can repair the system files to default from single user mode? Or do a OS DVD repair from single user mode? Better yet - is there anyway I can completely bypass the login GUI window?
I know the exact file, I have the default file in the correct directory, I know where the problem is - I just can't get to it.
I really don't want to loose everything on my HD.

If you're unable to boot from a Mac OS X install disk, there are a few possible reasons:
    1) The disk is damaged
    2) The disk is not appropriate for the computer
    3) The optical drive is damaged
    4) There's some other hardware problem
    5) The hard drive is so badly corrupted that you can't boot from anything (rare, I've only seen a confirmed case like this once)
    6) You have a peripheral connected that is interfering
If #1 is the case, there's not much you can do but replace the disk. In the case of #2, note that gray disks that shipped with a different machine won't work and that [you can't install an older system than what shipped on your machine|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2186]. #3 is probably only diagnosable (is that a word?) if your system is working (so you can test other disks) or if Apple takes a look at it. #4 can be tested with [Apple Hardware Test|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509], if you can manage to boot into that. And #5 can be difficult to fix, usually involving the assistance of another machine (for example, you could boot in [FireWire target mode|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661] and try repairing with something like [DiskWarrior|http://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/index.html] or just erase the drive). Finally, #6 is easy to test - just unplug everything but the keyboard and mouse and test again.
Since fsck reported errors on your drive that had to be repaired, #5 could be possible, but then I would think it wouldn't boot into single-user mode. Try going back to single-user mode and keep running fsck repeatedly until no problems are found (or until you're reasonably sure they won't be fixed).
Unfortunately, since we know your hard drive was damaged, you may have already lost everything on the drive if you didn't have backups.

  • Spotlight Treating Files as System Files

    hi,
after ugrading to snowleopard i noticed that spotlight fails to show certain files when i type their names in the search field. i have already tried the obvious solutions such as rebuilding the index without any success.
    few things i noticed:
    - the files are on a volume mounted on /Volumes/Data
    - the files are in a subdirectory "private"
    - they are contained in the spotlight index
weird thing is that if i do an mdls on one of the files spotlight does not show i am getting this:
    mdls /Volumes/Data/private/entertainment/music/nightwish/albums/Oceanborn/Sleeping\ Sun.mp3

    MDSystemFile
why is it considered a system file in kMDItemSupportFileType? i also noticed when i do an mdls on the "private" directory it is also considered a system file/folder.
all other files that are shown by spotlight do not have the MDSystemFile type. is there any way i can get this fixed so that spotlight does not consider any of my files on /Volumes/Data system files anymore and shows them?
    any help is appreciated...
    cheers
    --bruno

The problem is the name of the folder "private"--evidently Spotlight will only regard a folder of that name, no matter where it is, as the same class as the official /private folder, which is a container for system files. While Spotlight will index anything it considers a system file, it won't display search results containing such a file unless you explicitly tell it to.
I'm afraid you only have two choices:
    1. Rename "private" to something else
    2. Do your Spotlight searches by Command-F and put the option for System Files in your drop down list so you can access it reasonably quickly
I suspect the easiest is to just rename the folder, dropping the "e" will solve the problem. Indeed, "privat" is a perfectly good word in several languages. Pretend you speak Catalan, that's kind of classy.

  • Including files in default.env

I'm running Oracle 9iAS on Solaris 8/9 and would like to use file includes in the default.env.
For example, Unix environment files like .profile allow one to include a file by using the ". <file>" syntax like so:
    # .profile
    FOO=/var/tmp
    . /etc/more_env_vars
Any variables defined in /etc/more_env_vars would be included in the environment, along with FOO.
Does Oracle provide a way to include files in default.env?
That would allow me to setup a file to define env variables common to Forms and other processes running on the AS w/out me having to duplicate the variable definitions.
    thanks,

Before I replied back, I wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something. Apparently, I was.
Short scenario - I'm using a batch file to install FF and am copying a custom mozilla.cfg file. We are also using PolicyPak to control the behavior of Firefox. I removed PolicyPak, uninstalled FF (and removed all references to it), reinstalled v27.01 using the file downloaded from Mozilla, et voila!
Now the chrome folder and userChrome file are being copied. Now I have to see where exactly the breakdown is occurring.
    Thanks cor-el.

  • Spotlight give incorrect/incomplete results (NOT system files)

Currently, in Leopard, I am not getting all of the results I should when search in spotlight. As the subject says, I am NOT talking about the System files issues or other, purposely left out files. As an example I had all of the following files in one directory inside my Documents folder in my Home directory when I upgraded to Leopard.
    Batch ACGSManualR1.doc
    ACGSManualD2.doc
    ACGSManualD1.doc
    ACGSManualD3.doc
On searching for 'ACGS_Manual' only 'Batch ACGSManualR1.doc' was found. I subsequently ran
    sudo mdutil -E /
to remove the index on the main disk and let spotlight complete, leaving totally alone for 14 hours. This was no improvement.
I then simply renamed one of the missing files (adding an A_ at the front) and voila it appeared in spotlight. Then renaming to the original it also would now appear in spotlight results.
This is very unsettling in that it seems you cannot depend on a negative result from spotlight. I never ran into this problem in Tiger
Has anyone else noticed this? Is there an incantation to solve this?
    Thanks
    Scott

If anyone is interested I believe I've track down the type of file that is crashing mdworker and making Spotlight searches unreliable. Certain e-mails from Yahoo mail groups that are html are doing this. I'm on the Osirix mail list from Yahoo and e-mails that contained Apple crash logs were causing this failure.
    Hope this helps someone.

  • Spotlight not finding files or folders

I recently installed 'SimplifyMedia' and am trying to figure out how to uninstall the program. I e-mailed customer support and they told me to 'Spotlight' the term 'SimplifyMedia' and erase anything that shows up.
I then did a 'Spotlight' search for 'SimplifyMedia' and only the application showed up. Upon manually searching for files I found these additional things.
    1.) A 'SimplifyMedia' folder inside my user/library/application support/simplifymedia
    2.) A 'SimplifyMedia' file inside user/library/preferences
    File = com.simplifymedia.Manager.plist
How come these didn't show up during the 'Spot Light' search? On my 'Spot Light' preferences I have every box checked so it should do a search of the entire harddrive, right? How do I get 'Spotlight' to show every file and folder on my hardrive with the words 'SimplifyMedia'?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    -Dan

Spotlight does not search the Library folders by default. It can be configured to do so.
    1. Press COMMAND-F to initiate a Spotlight search.
    2. Select Other from the drop down menu displaying Kind.
    3. Scroll down the list to System Files. Check the box to the right of that entry.
Now when you perform a Spotlight search you will be able to select System Files from the same drop down menu.
Alternatively, download the freeware Easy Find - VersionTracker or MacUpdate - and use it when you need to search for items not included by default in Spotlight.
