Spotlight Initial View Query Behavior

I have two iMacs. One at home, and one at work. At work I am on Tiger. At home I am on Leopard. At work, when I press command-F to do a search, Spotlight searches the current folder (which is what I want). However, at home, command-F will bring up my computer folder and will search everywhere, which is what I don't want. Any idea what might be causing this behavior?

In Tiger the default behavior was supposed to be that the place you invoked from was the place defaulted to search (I say "supposed" because personally I never found this to be completely reliable--about the time I would forget to look to make sure it was, it wouldn't be, rather it would set about search "This Computer" instead). In Leopard the default is "This Mac" with the place you invoked sitting next to it, unchecked. Just select it. The default is also "Contents" rather than "File Name"--neither of the defaults makes any sense. I would bet that the majority of people want to search the place they are in for a file name. The defaults are exactly backwards, and, so far, I have not found any way to hack 'em into sanity.

Can you create an Applescript that let's you batch define Acrobat's 'Initial View' settings under the Document Properties of an existing PDF?
I am not familiar with scripting language and enable the UI feature of Script Editor, but it didn't seem to record my actions. Photoshop's Actions don't allow me to define these specific settings.

Initial View settings not always working

A user recently reported this problem:
She opens a PDF for the first time through our website by click a link on an HTML page in IE. The PDF opens in a new browser window to the default view and first page, as specified in the initial view settings.
She advances several pages into the file to a page with links.
She clicks one of these links, which takes her to another page in the file.
She closes the browser window.
She returns to the original web page and clicks the link to the PDF again. The PDF opens to the LAST page viewed -- not the first page as specified in the initial view settings.
I'm seeing the same behavior on my PC. The versions of Acrobat Pro and Reader I have are 8.1.3. I've tried turning on and off the web browser settings in Acrobat and Reader (Allow fast web view and Allow speculative downloading ...), but I'm getting the same results.
Any ideas?

Materialized view query (Oracle 9i)

I have dropped a materialized view query and trying to create the same with additional columns in the prebuilt table.
Option - 1
when Iam using a query in the materialized view query "select * from schema.table@link, with refresh mode fast option, the database throws an error " no table or view exists"
Option - 2
When Iam using a query in the materialized view query "select * from schema.table@link, with refresh mode option either complete or force, it gets created.
I need to create the above materialized view query in the fast mode option, Please help.

Bring back Initial View consistant capability

I create documents in Acrobat where people click on links and go back and forth between two documents. I have my Initial View set on Bookmark Panel and Page, but when you click to the second document then return, the document has lost focus and now displays Page Panel and Page. In all past versions of Acrobat and Reader, this function has been consistent. Can you please fix/add whatever functionality that allowed Initial View to stay as it has been set?

Well I prefer the new behavior. Under Tiger, I had no control over the preview. I had several cases where I had large windows media files. If I even touched one of those files in column view the Finder would hang waiting for Quicktime to load the preview. On occasion the process crashed or hung permanently when the codecs could not be found. All because i mistakenly touched a file!
Now I have control. If I want a preview I just hit spacebar. Otherwise, the Finder leaves it alone.
Not everyone wants to go backwards.

Setting Initial View Folder for All Users at Once and Forever. How???

<p>Is there any way to make the initial view of all users to be a specific folder? What I want to acomplish it to show my public folders expanded and always showing a specific folder. I can do it for myselft but what about a global setting?</p>

VIEW Query Problem

Hi Greg,
I had created a view on a table which doesn't have Primary Key, but it has Unique and Not Null constraints on required columns.
I had wrote a procedure to query the data on VIEW. I have experienced strange problem, very first call to procedure will take more time than succeeding requests. For example from second request onwards, it returns data in < 2 Sec, but first transaction is taking 12 Sec to 30 Sec.
I thought that very first time VIEW is taking time to refresh it self. So, I added FORCE keyword in CREATE VIEW stattement. However, that doesn't helped out.
In my further investigation I came to know that base table on which VIEW created, has to be loaded in to memory before querying on VIEW.
So, I had executed a simple select statement on base table, before I execute VIEW query in procedure.
With this change I got results consistently < 2 Sec all the times.
My question is instead of executing the select statement on base table is there a way to load base tables data in memory before querying on VIEW?

Hi,
A view is nothing but parsed SQL statements stored in the database, a view may or may not run faster. If you execute the SQL used to define the view how much time is it taking. If you want try looking at MATERIALIZED VIEW , that may help you.

Initial View

Hello Everybody,
I'm having a little problem with the initial view. Upon opening, my converted PDF document (Smart Draw) continues to open in Portrait instead of Landscape. Ive created the original document in landscape before I converted to PDF. I've tried various settings in Acrobat > File > Properties > Initial View...no luck, it keeps opening in portrait instead of landscape...any ideas.

Is there any way to force the following initial view...

..."fit to page" + "two pages per screen - but only if there's room for two"?
In other words, I want the page to fit in the screen upon initial view, but I also see a lot of wasted real estate all around that could, most of the time, fit a second page. However, I don't want the two pages to count against the "fit" -- meaning, on narrower screens, the priority should go to fitting the first page (and not showing the 2nd) rather than fit both pages at all costs.
Is there any way to ask Acrobat to do this?

The initial view (IV) settings within a PDF file are static tags - they can't be made to dynamically-adapt based on the window dimensions,it's the renderer (Acrobat, Reader, or whatever else is opening the file) that decides if and how it will follow the IV requested by the file header.
It would be possible to use a Page Open action on the first page of the file, which does some nasty math with the various doc.*WindowRect objects to work out how much "wasted" space there is, and then set the doc.layout and doc.zoomType properties - but page actions are a different concept to IV as the zoom will reset itself every time that page is viewed. Users don't like their application apparently fiddling with the zoom level without being told to!

Is there a way to set the default Initial View to Bookmarks Panel and Page on word documents that I save as PDF?

When I save my word 2013 documents as Adobe PDF I have to open the PDF up, go to File>Properties>Initial View>Navigation Tab and then set the initial view as Bookmark Panel and Page; it gets pretty tedious.
I use Save as Adobe PDF rather than Print to Adobe PDF Printer because I like being able to have the security settings automatically set.
I just want to be able to save my word document as Adobe PDF with the initial view already set as Bookmark Panel and Page, and with security, so I can send it out immediately.
Is this possible?

Finder Cover Flow initial view

How can I set the initial view settings when using cover flow within finder-
the finder file/folder list at the bottom of the window is way too short and the cover flow file preview portion of the window is massive.
Appreciate?

For me, I find that when I resize the window, it stays that way. If it doesn't stick for you, try resizing, and then pressing Command-J to open View Preferences, check the Always Open in Cover View box at the top, and the Use as Defaults at the bottom. They're not directly related, but I've found that the helped.
If those don't help, go to the folder ~/Library/Preferences (where ~ stands for you Home folder), and remove a couple of files:
com.apple.finder.plist
com.apple.systemuiserver.plist
In the ByHost folder, there will be one or more com.apple.HIToolbox.randomjunkthatdoesn'tmatter.plist file; remove all of them.
Log in/out, and see if that helps.

Spatial vs. materialized views/query rewrite

Dear all,
we are trying to use Spatial (Locator) functionality together with performance optimization using materialized views and query rewrite, and it does not seem to work. Does anybody has experience with this?
The problem in more detail:
* There is a spatial attribut (vom Typ GEOMETRY) in our table;
* we define a materialized view on that table;
* we run a query that could be better answered using the materialized view with query rewrite;
*the optimizer does not choose the plan using the materialized view, query rewrite does not take place;
This happenes, even if neither the materialized view, nor the query contains the spatial attribut.
The explanation given by the procedure DBMS_MVIEW.Explain_Rewrite is:
"QSM-01064 query has a fixed table or view Cause: Query
rewrite is not allowed if query references any fixed tables or views"
We are using Oracle 9R2, Enterprise Edition, with locator. Nevertheless, it would also be interesting, if there is any improvement in 10g?
A more complicated task, using materialized views to optimize spatial operations (e.g., sdo_relate) would also be very interesting, as spatial joins are very expensive operations.

Initial View - Default Setup (Acrobat 9.0 Pro)

Hi everyone,
This may be a dumb question but I just can't seem to find how to change the default page number in the "Initial View" tab - under Document Properties.
My pdfs are always opening up on page 4 (small thing - but annoying!). I can change the value to "1" for each pdf, but I don't want to have to do this everytime i generate a pdf.
There must be a way to change the default value from "4" to "1" (I hope).
Can anyone help with this?

Never mind - I just found the option under "Save PDF" that allows me to select the page number.

Batch create multiple pdf's while using epilogue.ps for setting initial view and opening bookmarks

I'm trying to batch create multiple pdf's from word files, and use the epilogue.ps file for setting the initial view and opening the bookmarks panel, but i keep getting no satisfying result.. i'm probably missing something fundamental.
I've read some forum posts and adobe help posts explaining this, so i'm pretty sure this would be possible?

i've searched for and found a way to overwite the epilogue.ps file and have inserted the following:

After that i checked my Adobe Acrobat preferences, and in the categorie 'Convert to Pdf' i selected 'Microsoft office word' in the select area 'Converting to pdf'.
Clicked 'Edit settings' to allow creating a joboptions file (field: 'adobe pdf settings') which has the option 'Use epiloque.ps and prologue.ps' checked in the advanced section.
So now i thought i would have everyting setup to create my pdf's, however, my view isn't changed to fit, nor are there any bookmarks or in this case thumbs (i used /useThumbs) visible.
Did i miss something obvious? Is there a better way to test this? Any help would be appreciated!
