Spotlight is indexing but what? And why does it want access to the web?

I can see Spotlight is indexing, it spends several hours a day doing this, every day.
Where can i find more details like previous OS X versions? Which drive, how much time left etc.
Console was no help, any suggestions welcome.
Also, with "Spotlight Suggestions" and "Bing Web Searches" disabled in the Spotlight Search Results references, why is the process "Spotlight Web Content" still trying to access the web several times a day? I am not using Spotlight when this happens nor am i trying to preview any files that have web content in them. Most commonly it tries to connect to static.amazon.com on the http port.

In System Preferences > Spotlight > Search Results, if you have "Bookmarks and History" checked, then the "Spotlight Web Content" background process will crawl any web page that you recently visited to index its keywords. Uncheck that to turn it off.

  • What is "safaritools" and why does it want access to my account?

I'm having Safari 4.0.3 crashes on PowerBook G4 running Tiger 10.4.11 -- like everyone else.
But, I've also been getting this strange popup every now and then -- it looks like a regular Apple popup --- that asks for access to the account manager or keychain (Deny, Allow Once, Allow Always). It is called "safaritools" small case, combined word. Says something like "safaritools wants permission to access..." and I think it want account manager (sorry I should have taken a screen shot).
Does anyone know what this? Is this part of the new Safari upgrade? Or is it a Trojan or other malware?
If so, what the heck does it do and should I Deny, Allow Once or Allow Always?
thanks for any help --- and assurances!
Apple needs to unbug Safari fast. At least (knocking wood on my head) my IPhone Safari runs great -- for now!

    Hi,
I'm having Safari 4.0.3 crashes on PowerBook G4 running Tiger 10.4.11 -- like everyone else.
    Tiger is out dated.
Or is it a Trojan or other malware?
Definably you are a switcher from MS to Apple. You need to know more about the system you running and about Mac general.
Apple needs to unbug Safari fast.
    What you talking about?
Because you have something you don't understand your assuming that this the fold of Apple.

  • What is "ndat", and why does it want to connect to 0.0.0.0 on DIVERT port?

Whenever I connect to any wireless hotspot, LittleSnitch (a program that reports any ingoing/outgoing connections) says: "ndat wants to connect to 0.0.0.0 on DIVERT port 2560 (labrat)". If I click "allow" the connection works fine, if I deny the connection, the internet doesn't work. Does anybody have any idea what this is?
I just want to make sure I'm not inadvertently allowing my data to go through some connection and be vulnerable, etc.

I thought about that, but all that LittleSnitch does is report ingoing/outgoing communications. It doesn't create any. So I'm just trying to figure out what a program called "ndat" does, and what 0.0.0.0 on DIVERT port 2560 (labrat) means.
Has anyone heard of any of these things on OSX?

  • What is maccmd and why does it want to make changes?

Everytime I reboot my macbook pro I get this message.
I always just hit cancel but I'm starting to wonder what it is.  I used finder to see what program it was and found nothing.  Then I googled it and searched this board and didn't find anything.
Did some malicious software sneak its way onto my macbook?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Apple Application Support - What and why does this exists?

So I welcomed iTunes 9 on my computer and iOS4 on my music player (latter to a great commonly known regret). Now here is my question:
What is the "Apple Application Support" and why iTunes 9 must have it to run?
(Note: Normally many software products there have optional modules which one may wish or may not wish to install depending on required functionality.)
P.S. I did my Google "homework", so please kindly advise here substantively.

See the second half of the following user tip for some information about what Apple Application Support is:
[iTunes for Windows, QuickTime, and Apple Application Support|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2355263]
The MobileMe Control Panel for Windows also uses Apple Application Support nowadays, as per:
[MobileMe: "CoreFoundation.dll was not found" or " Apple Application Support is missing" alert|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2211]

  • What is NMDB and why does it want to connect to netbios?

Only lately have I been getting a connection warning for this... what is it? Anyone know?
    e

NMDB is part of the samba networking package that OS X uses to connect to windows machines over the network. NetBIOS is a way for computers to properly associate names on a network, so you can enter the computer name to connect to it instead of having to type the ip address. It appears the windows networking functions are trying to connect to netbios in attempt to resolve network names. You can try toggling windows networking on and off to see if this fixes the problem. If you're not on a network with windows machines then you can turn off windows networking altogether and hopefully get rid of the problem. Do all this in the "sharing" system preference.

  • Why am I seeing my daughter's contacts only on my MB (synced I assume from her iPhone) and why does my text messaging on the MB all viewed like she is receiving them?  Even on my phone, a message I sent to myself as a test shows up as "mom"

Why are my daughter's contacts the only one showing up on my MB and why do all text messages now, including on the MB and my iPhone show up now as if she's receiving them, even when they are sent to me based on her contact list?

It's called iMessage, new in iOS 5.0...these messages are going as iMessages, and as designed, they appear on all of your iOS devices(your Apple ID on your daughter's phone). Either turn iMessage off on your daughter's phone or get her her own Apple ID & wipe her phone & then setup it up again using her own Apple ID. Your daughter having her own Apple ID is recommended if you want to fully take advantage of iCloud, FaceTime, iMessage, etc. She can still use your iTunes account.

  • Why does Ical want to change the original dates to 2001 when syncing from my iPhone?

Hi I was wondering if anyone could help with this as its driving me up the wall
over the last few weeks I upgraded to Lion running 10.7.1 and until then my Iphone synced everything fine without any problems I have an Iphone 3G running 4.2.1 and when I sync now I get the Ical sync alert saying that more than 25% of my calender events will change on my computer.
When I look nothing has changed accept the origianl date which is 1/1/2001 for anything that is being taken off my phone onto Ical and also for anything that is already on Ical, I keep telling it to sync later but everything I try it always comes up the same.
I asked during the week in at the Apple store but was adviced that this problem had not been heard of before and to book both my phone an macbook in for a genius bar appointment.
Anyone else come accross this problem or is it just myself?
    Kind regards Andy ;0)

Anyone able to help with this problem at all its still doing my head in ;0(

  • Browsers and msn does not want to acces the internet

I'm using a WRT54G Wireless router, my pc's connected by a wire and my laptop is connected wireless. Everything was working fine till I decided to reset the router back to factory standards because I forgot my password to acces my router settings page. Now some programs can still acces the internet, like skype and world of warcraft, While other programs like my browsers, msn and almost everything else doesn't want to connect to the interet.
Also I can't view the folders I share on my network.
Can anyone help me out here?

Did you reconfigure the router again? Check the DNS servers assign to the PC, make sure it is public DNS. Do a MAC clone on the router and power cycle, try to ping to the DNS server assign to PC. If you can ping to DNS and still could not access web pages, reset the winsock or run winsockfix on your PC.

  • ICal icon on my Mac Book Air displays a circled number at the upper right corner as does Mail for new emails - how do I find out what item(s) that number is referring to? And why does it show up on the Mac Book Air and not my 4S iPhone?

A circled number appears in the upper right corner of the iCal icon on my Mac Book Air. What does it mean? How do I resolve it? Why doesn't it appear on my 4S iPhone via the iCloud?

    Glenn,
That number means that you have an event invitation. Use iCal>View>Show Notifications to choose what to do with the notification. Since OS X 10.7.2 is required for iCloud integration, I am not surprised that there are anomalies between the iPhone and the MacBook Pro.

  • What is recovery mode and why does it want me to restore my iphone?

I was downloading the new software 4.3.5 for my iphone 4 when i think the computer lost internet so it appeared with an error and i tried again but then it said  "Itunes is detecting an iphone in recovery mode" then it wanted me to restore my iphone whitch im scared to do. also it spent quite alot of time on "preparing for update". now all i can get from my iphone is the picture of the cable wanting to be plugged into itunes.
please tell me what recovery mode is and how i got it. and also if there is any way ican get my iphone back with out restoring my iphone. thank you

Leave the phone connected to iTunes and let it boot the phone up again.  iTunes should then try and update the firmware again once it detects the phone.

  • Yosemite: What the *** is Atos and why does it want to take control?

"Atos wants to take control.." dialogue box comes up on every boot-up.  New phenomenon since upgrading to Yosemite.  Nothing can be done until I fulfill this request by putting in my AppleID password.
    -What is Atos?
    -Why is this happening?
-Is this an Apple thing or is there a ghost in the machine?
-Why didn't Apple do a compatibility test for user/s before allowing the upgrade?
-How do I get rid of this ridiculous hassle?
Would be nice to have an official Apple response.  Mostly I've seen other folks who want me to send diagnostics, which sounds sketchy.
PS:  I don't tacitly use Bento, never heard of it until I had this problem and looked over the forums - to no avail, don't use Filemaker.  I do have Office 2011 installed.
    Help, this *****.

It's likely that one of your login items is causing the problem. Select the Login Items tab in the Users & Groups pane of System Preferences. Delete any items that you don't recognize. If you're not sure which ones to delete, double-click each to test it.

  • Android.process.acore?  What is this and why does it keep not working?

Help: I've had my Lucid 3 phone since May and this phone has been the most confusing thing to operate.  I'm currently having three (3) issues:
The Wi-Fi is not working...I keep getting the symbol refreshing.  I can't turn the Wi-Fi on or off.  I read "Turning Wi-Fi on..." when I go to the setting for Wi-Fi but this has been going on for 3 hours.  C'mon!  My Wi-Fi at home is working great; that's how I'm writing this post. Help!
To add to the misery: I keep getting a pop-up notification that reads: "Unfortunately, the android.process.acore has stopped."  What is this and why does it not work. The phone's been getting this message for a week now...help!
Last concern: I'm still not getting multimedia texts (particularly pictures).  The data and Wi-Fi were on...well, that's when the Wi-Fi was working (please refer to complaint #1 above).  What the heck?
This phone is terrible news and I can't wait to replace it.  In the meantime, the phone needs to work. Help.
    -Salo

We certainly want to clear up all the confusion and have a working phone in your hands, srodezno. Let's take this one issue at a time:
    1. How long ago did this trouble with WiFi start? Are you able to connect to any alternate WiFi signals other than the one at home?
    2. Do you get that notification when you access anything in particular? Did it begin when you updated or installed any application?
    3. Are you still able to access other data services (web, apps, Play Store, etc) while the WiFi is off/not working? Are you able to send the MMS messages?

what is cookies.sqlite and why does it slow the start up of mozilla by a minute or so. I found it and deleted it,fixed the problem, but it reappears every time I restart mozilla.

AVG reports these sqlite cookies each time firefox starts. they usually belong to tribalfusion or some other tracker. How do I block them in the first place. I thought firefox is a safe browser. Did not have this problem until I upgraded to 3.6.

  • What is indexing and why does it take 122 hours?

What is indexing and why has it slowed my computer and why does it take 122 hours?

Indexing allows Spotlght to know where everything is on your computer.  It won't take as long as it says, the times it gives are always vastly inflated.
