Spotlight issue - Finder comments dont seem to be updated

Hi,
trying to classify files using spotlight comments in the Finder (after Cmd-i; also via AppleScript) but it's hit&miss. Usually (not always) adding a comment works and a search finds it immediately, but sometimes it does not. The other way is worse: removing a comment very often is not taken into account at all - the file remains in the respective Saved Search, even though Cmd-i shows that the comment is gone.
Some more datapoints:
- reindexing helps; mdutil -E <VolumeName>, wait 30min, and then everything is fine (...this is a bit of a Windows solution...)
- mdls has the wrong information, ie even if the comment is gone from the file it still is in mdls (...which makes sense I guess; this is why the search still finds it...)
- mdimport -d 2 <filename> shows that the correct comment (eg no comment, or a changed comment) has been read, it is just ignored (ie subsequent mdls shows the old comment)
I guess this is a bug, so I can really only hope Apple will fix it - but does someone know a workaround that would force spotlight to import all data? I guess it is one of the Apple optimisation tricks- OSX thinks it knows better....

what always helps for me is to run from a terminal
mdutil -E /Volumes/Volumename
which rebuilds the index (Volumename is the name of a mounted encrypted sparsebundle) --- but this is slow
what sometimes helps is to eject / remount the disk, but no clear solution yet
Oh, and by the way: on a 1GB drive (mainly pdfs) my freshly indexed spotlight is 100MB, but after a week or so it grows to 900MB...)

No it doesn't. You need to purchase it from Microsoft.

  • Spotlight and Find not working

    Hi everyone
Apologies if I'm covering old ground here.
I don't use either Spotlight or Find very often, but discovered recently that neither now works. From other posts, I think this may have started when I installed the 4.11 software update. There are no new software updates available (ie I have already got the most recent Security Update, which seems to have helped in some other similar cases).
Spotlight just doesn't find anything. Finder's cog-symbol-thing spins for as long as I let it, with no result.
I have tried trashing the spotlight.plist file, and quitting the SystemUIServer process from within Activity Monitor. I have also rebuilt the disc using Disk Warrior. None of this helped.
I tried dragging the hard disc to the Privacy pane of Spotlight to force it to re-index, but nothing can be dragged to the Privacy pane.
    All suggestions gratefully received.
    Thanks, Peter

Thanks to everyone for their comments. There seem to be quite a few other threads detailing a variety of problems with Spotlight, but as yet I haven't found anything that helps.
Brief confusing addition: I just installed the recent iTunes update 7.6.1, and afterwards ran fsck just to see if everything was ok/no worse. When I rebooted, the little Spotlight icon at the top right had a pulsing white dot in the "magnifying lens". When I clicked on it, I got a drop down menu telling me that Spotlight was busy indexing, including a time bar that was apparently estimating how long this would take. Then it stopped, and all is exactly as it was previously, ie not working.
It could have been worse, I suppose - others seem to have got stuck in "permanently indexing" mode. I wish Apple would address this problem, but I'm not holding my breath - so any further ideas would be very welcome.
    Thanks, Peter

  • Using Spotlight to find photos named in iPhoto

I have iPhoto 4 but am upgrading to 6 soon. Reading about how iPhoto organizes photos has been very helpful. I think I can get used to having to use iPhoto to manage my photos (how Windows of it!), although I do not like the idea of a photo having a different name in iPhoto than in the Finder. For instance, I use Spotlight a lot, but it does not seem to find the names of photos in iPhoto. Is there a way to use Spotlight to find photos in iPhoto?

    Mark
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Spotlight will not find photos outside of the Search in the iPhoto Window. It doesn't index the library6.iphoto file. So, titles comments and keywords etc are not indexed.
I think I can get used to having to use iPhoto to manage my photos (how Windows of it!),
You don't have to use iPhoto you know. But if you do, finding your pic files is very easy. There are three ways (at least) to get files from the iPhoto Window.
    1. Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. Show File: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
Rolls in the iPhoto Window correspond exactly with the Roll Folders in the Originals Folder in the iPhoto Library Folder. You can move photos between Rolls, you can rename rolls, edit them, create them, as long as you do it via the iPhoto Window. Check out the Info Pane (wee 'i', lower left) the name and date fields are editable. Edit a Roll Name using the Info Pane, the Roll Folder in iPhoto Library Folder/Originals will also have the new name.
although I do not like the idea of a photo having a different name in iPhoto than in the Finder.
iPhoto is a photo organiser, not a file organiser. If you're concerned with file names, stick to the Finder. Or name the files before importing them to iPhoto. Other than that, find them visually, or by date, comment, title in the iPhoto Window.

  • Spotlight and Finder is selective in what it Finds

Spotlight and Finder does not find some files and folders. As an example - I run firefox, but Spotlight/Finder will not located any files with the name "Mozilla" And of course there are several files/folders that have mozilla in the file/folder name.
    Is this normal in SL?
Comment: Spotlight in SL seems quite different from Tiger. I liked it better in Tiger. But I would still expect it to Find stuff!

In a Finder search, set the search to include system files:
    1. Produce a Search window by typing Command-F while in the Finder.
    2. Pull down the menu that defaults to "Kind" and choose Other.
    3. In the sheet that appears, type System in the Search field.
    4. Select the "System Files" entry that appears.
    5. If you want to be able to easily include system files in future searches, click the "In Menu" checkbox. System Files will now appear in the pop-up.
    6. Click OK.
All the mozilla files and folder should now appear.
    Regards.

I need to export a photo at around 1meg file size, and dont seem to be able to do it in the presets can anyone help please ,I shoot on a canon 5d

I believe Frank is referring to the end use (e.g., for print or on-screen use).
Until he returns, I can tell you that I ran a quick test using an image from the Aperture 3 training book library which was as follows:
Camera = Canon EOS 5D Mark II
    Master resolution = 5616 x 3744 (21 MP)
I was able to export to a JPEG with end file size of 1 MB as follows:
Export Presets drop-down > select 'Edit' option
Selected preset name 'JPEG - 50% of Original Size' > change percentage value to 40% > change DPI value to '300' > click OK to set as current default > Export version to desktop.
The exported JPEG has a resolution of 2246 x 1498 and appears on screen to have the same image quality of the original in Aperture.
Note - I did not change the default Image Quality slider in the Export Preset dialog (which left it at 10).
Basically, you will need to play around with the settings until you find the appropriate values to arrive at an image version you want.

  • OS X 10.8.3, TM & Spotlight Issue

I just upgraded to OS X 10.8.3 and my TM is no longer backing up. This appears to be a Spotlight issue as all I get is Estimating Index Time when I open Spotlight.  I tried the trick of making my HD private in Spotlight then public again - same result it's still estimating index time.  I've read lots of posts about Spotlight being buggy after operating system upgrades although most are 1-2 years old.  Anyone have a solution to this?

The pink box in #D2 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting shows how to do it on a Time Machine backup drive; use the same procedure, but apply it to your internal HD instead.
The index is normally hidden; you need to be able to see it to delete it via the Finder.  Installing the Tinker Tool app via the link there is one way of making them visible.
Then locate and delete the index (but the one on your Mac's HD).
Which part of that do you need help with?

  • Spotlight not finding metadata of iPhoto '08

I used to be able to type a word in spotlight to find a photo which had that word in the Description of the photo (i.e. metadata). Or I could use the Title of a photo. But recently spotlight has changed and doesn't locate Titles or other metadata. It can find the photo files if I know the filename (eg P1053728.jpg) but that's not particularly useful.
Things I've changed recently: I've updated with every system update very promptly (within a day or so of release); I've also started using Filevault. I can't think of any other significant changes.
I've tried rebuilding the Spotlight index, but no change.
    Any ideas?

There is a way to do a one time (or multiple over a 20 day period) writing of keywords, comments and titles to the original files. Follow the first 9 steps of Tutorial #1 and that will get you those items written to the actual original files.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Finder comments visible in Aperture?

I have a notes in the Finder Comments in scans I've imported into Aperture. Can I see those comments in Aperture?
I made visible every metadata field and don't see the Finder Comments. I have them as referenced files so it's easy to go and see the comments.
I have a mix of scans from the internet and photos of documents I've taken and was hoping to use the Comments field in Aperture. Mainly because I've got about 100 documents I downloaded and I pasted the info related to the document in the Comments field.
Thanks for any help. Maybe an AppleScript to do the job?

Found answer here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/12556579/get-spotlight-comments-from-file-usi ng-python. No idea what -KU is about, but script worked fine without it.
    #!/usr/bin/env ruby -KU
    require 'cgi'
    plist = `xattr -p com.apple.metadata:kMDItemFinderComment test.txt |
    xxd -r -p | plutil -convert xml1 -o - -`
    puts CGI.unescapeHTML(plist.scan(/<string>(.*?)<\/string>/m)[0][0])

  • Spotlight not finding files in folders that have been extracted from ZIPs

I've got a folder, say 'test', with some images in it. It is located in ~/Pictures.
I have just downloaded another folder as a ZIP file, which Safari put in /tmp and unzipped automatically. It contains some more images. Let's call it 'exif'. I have moved 'exif' into 'test'.
Now, when I do a Spotlight search of images in the folder 'test', Spotlight does not list the images in 'exif'!
(I do the search with CMD-F, 'test' folder only, Kind = Images.)
However, when I create a different folder in 'test' and move the images from 'exif' to the new one, then a Spotlight search for images in 'test' does list those, too.
Also, when I copy the originial unzipped folder 'exif' to 'test' (Alt + mouse drag), then the images in the new 'exif' folder show up in the Spotlight search.
So it seems a folder that has been extracted from a ZIP archive does not get indexed by Spotlight -- only if its contents have been copied first.
Is this a bug in Spotlight?
    Am I missing something?
It's pretty bad, because I would always have to remember to copy unzipped folders to a new one, in order to make sure that Spotlight does find the stuff!
    Regards,
    Gabriel.

Yeah the new search leaves something  to be desired (actually the old search wasn't so great either). You get better results using Google's advanced search and restricting the search domain to discussions.apple.com.
Here's what the search in Google looks like:
Anyway the old post is why doesn't spotlight search inside aperture library?  it explains why spotlight
doesn't search the library and how to work around it.

  • Spotlight not finding items in Home

I have my home folder encrypted using Security in Sys Preferences. When I use Spotlight to find any item in my Home folder, it does not find. It finds only items that are not in Home folder. In that case I click on Show All option and click on Home in Where options (right bottom). Spotlight then finds the items. How to make this work always ? or is this a bug ? I am using MBP. Had no problem before moving from PB. I am wondering if this got something to do with Universal build ...

    Issue the command
    <pre>
    sudo mdutil -s /
    </pre>
and if you see a reply that looks like
    <pre>
    Status: Indexing Enabled
    </pre>
    Then it should be working.
You can turn on/off indexing of specific directories under / by editing, with root permission, the file
    /.Spotlight/_rules.plist

  • I just got photo shop elements 12, I dont seem to have a full inventory in my tool box, it only shows 6 tools or so and I dont have the eraser. Any reason

I dont seem to have a full inventory of tools, I am missing the eraser as well, it only shows 6 tools

As I have just told another user, this is not the Elements forum.  Ask your question here:
    Photoshop Elements
You need to tell them what operating system you are using?  Have you had previous versions of Elements installed on that computer?  Are the tools missing completely, or just greyed out?
Have you tried restarting your computer?  Did you notice any glitches during the installation process?
With Photoshop, a first step to resolve similar issues is to reset Preferences.  in Photoshop you have to hold down Shift Alt Ctrl (Shift Opt Cmd) immediately after starting Photoshop.  I think the same process works with Elements.
    Good luck
