Spotlight keeps corrupting
Hi — I've rebuilt my spotlight database several times — added my drive to exclude in sys prefs, closed, added back — rebuild.
However, this is not working. Everytime I do this, spotlight still hangs, does not show correct results, stalls, etc.
What's my next step?
d
HI Daniel,
Try deleting this file.
com.apple.Spotlight.plist
~/Library/Preferences. Move that file to the Trash and restart your Mac.
Also, repair disk permissions.
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

Long document with table keeps corrupting
I have a file that is around 300 pages containg a continous table - text only, roughly 13,000 rows that keeps corrupting.
The first file corrupted, so we rebuilt it and when the second one was just about complete, InDesign crashed and now the file will not open... it opens a blank screen but gets a never ending spinny beach ball.
The file also contains nested master pages (total of 2 masters) moved from a book that this file will eventually become a part of.
My question, is the table simply too large for Indesign to handle - (this I find unlikely since I've done similar work many times before) or are the master pages causing an issue or should this file be part of the book before starting it rather than adding it after its finished?
Any thoughts would be appreciated, before we rebuild for the 3rd time. I just want to be cautious to not do anything that might corrupt the book...
ThanksAre you patched all the way to 7.0.4?
13000 rows of pasted text. Wow.
Not that it helps at this point, but I'd start doing save as more often, and to a new name so you have some backup versions if it goes south again. An export to .idml (see Remove minor corruption by exporting) if you can get anythign to open certainly won't hurt, either. -
Spotlight keeps indexing in snow leopard
Spotlight keeps indexing for the last 2 weeks. I tsometimes has 45 mins till finishing, but when I check later, it still indexing without a estimate of time when it will finish. I have selected my ext. HD not to be index, but it still states it indexing my main HD. What can I do? I'm using 10.6.8. Also have 4 USB, 2 tb ext HD attachded. 2-to a usb hub and 2 -to the back of the imac. What can I do?
AustinI had the same problems with spotlight that kept indexing. I solved them by using the following commands in the Terminal:
$ sudo rm -rf /.Spotlight-V100/*
$ sudo mdutil -i on -E /
As explained here:

Mail service keeps corrupting.
Hello all,
My mail service keeps corrupting on my PowerMac running Mac OS X 10.3 Server.
I have reinstalled my server 3 times due to this problem.
Any one else having the same problem?
any solutions?
Thanks,
ChrisIn addition to Alex's request for logs, and more info- I would point out that you are TWO major revs behind. I bet the downtime is worth more than the 499 upgrade (the 10 user limit applies only to filesharing). Give tiger or 10.5.1 a try.
It rarely makes sense to troubleshoot something thats already been fixed by Apple.

hi,
The Time Capsule at work stopped taking backups of my machine on July,1. For my colleagues, it still works fine. I also noticed spotlight keeps trying to index the disk.
As a solution I removed the latest backup (indicated with 'inProgress' and I verified the disk with disk utility. I took 3 days, but mentioned no errors. I tried a couple of times to restart the backup, and now it finally seems to work again. Backup works (but very slow), however spotlight keeps indexing.
I already tried restarting the spotlight server, but it does not help. I tried other suggestions on the web but nothing seems to work...See #D2 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).

Mac Mail in 10.6.8 keeps corrupting
My mac mail keeps corrupting and I keep running my disk utilities to fix the preferences which helps for a day or so the back to weird stuff, where when typing characters jump around or it won't let me type at all, then can't send the message after battling through it. Had to shut off one of my mail boxes because it could connect to the server and would just keep spinning. Tried to reistall Snow Leopard and it helped for a couple of days then back to same old. Also rebuilt the boxes.
What should I do to get my mail functioning again?Could be many things, we should start with this...
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
Any improvement? -
Spotlight keeps on crashing when I type something like network utility or console. The spinner on the left of the window seems to freeze and then the window disappears. I tried deleting the com.apple.spotlight.plist file but no use. This is what it says on Console:

Spotlight keeps reindexing due to motion5 ?
The last few days spotlights keeps indexing and hangs for hours (About 172 hours remaining for indexing my internal drive at one time).
Today i did everything (terminal, onyx, spotless etc) to clean things and that seemed to fix the problem. But now the indexing process hangs again (this time only 3 hours remaining, but it stays that way for many hours).
So i did a search for 'mdworker' in console and these errors came up quite a few times
mdworker32[622]
Error Error loading /Applications/Motion.app/Contents/Library/Spotlight/Motion Spotlight.mdimporter/Contents/MacOS/Motion Spotlight: dlopen(/Applications/Motion.app/Contents/Library/Spotlight/Motion Spotlight.mdimporter/Contents/MacOS/Motion Spotlight, 262): no suitable image found.

I'm using a macbook pro (2011) running 10.6.8
Any ideas what's wrong or can be done do fix this?
[s]1- Run Disk Utility to "Repair" all drives. Don't bother with "Verify", waset of time.
2- Run Disk Warrior to rebuild directories on all drives.
It's likely a failiing drive if those two don't work. -
Windows keeps corrupting WU stores
I'm not sure if somebody else had this problem before, but for me this keeps happening every couple of weeks. It happened for the third time recently.
Out of the blue on shutdown Windows says that it's installing updates with the typical counter of percent complete going up. This is weird for a couple of reasons. First, no new updates were available. Second, the updates are configured to be confirmed, so
they cannot be applied automatically. I have confirmed in the update history that indeed no update was installed at that time.
So, on the next startup Windows finishes installing fictional updates again with the typical counter going up until it reaches 100% and then the message is displayed that Windows Update Cleanup is taking place (or something to that tune - I don't remember the
exact message). This step takes considerable time, I'd say at least 15 minutes with heavy disk I/O. Then when I'm finally able to login the CPU spikes with TrustedInstaller hogging one CPU core. When TrustedInstaller finally is done with its thing (a long
time, 2 hours or so) I get a pop up balloon saying that new updates are available. The problem is the "new" updates are quite old and I'm positive that they were installed before. Previously it was .NET framework fixpak or something like that, and
this time they are some security updates, one of them even dating back to 2012. If I let the updates to be applied the same set of updates will be displayed again and again. There is no way of getting out of this vicious cycle.
Obviously, Windows Update stores keep getting corrupt, but my question is why Windows keeps doing this to itself?
The Windows application error log has lots of informational events 1001 WindowsWcpOtherFailure3 pointing to Windows::Rtl::SystemImplementation:: DirectRegistryProvider::SysOpenKey API call (I assume). There are more details in those events, but I don't think
those details are very relevant here.
Is there a way to restore just the WU stores from backup? What I've been doing so far was to restore the whole partition from the latest image (taken monthly) and then restore all the user data from backups, but this is extremely tedious and time consuming
process, and it seems to be only a temporary fix, as like I said this keeps happening every couple of weeks and there is no reason to believe that it won't happen again.
I'd appreciate all the suggestions as to why is this happening and how to fix the issue without resorting to complete partition restore and then restoring the user data.Hi Andy,
Thanks for suggestions. I've already the latest update agent installed on my system. I've reset the WU components, but that didn't help. I'm getting error 80070002 (most of the time) and occasionally errors 80080005 and 80244010. When I checked the WindowsUpdateClient
log that you pointed me to I noticed the same error 80070002 first appearing on 1/25. That's about the time the corruption happened. Before that date there were only informational entries, no errors.
I ran System Update Readiness Tool and this is the log file:

I also found DeepClean.log, which is I believe what Windows did to itself to break WU. It's way too big to paste the content here.
I believe that error 80070002 has nothing to do with temporary update files, because deleting them (part of the WU component reset) doesn't help. I did this several times. I need to somehow restore the missing packages/components listed in the log file.
Where are they normally stored?

.cab files keep corrupting in Windows XP
Hi all,
I'm 3 days into trying to install CS3 onto an Xp system so, if you can help me resolve this, you're a genius in my book. :-) I keep getting .cab file corruption errors. I think I've tried just about every trick I could find here in the forums (e.g., copying the disc's contents first to the hard drive, creating a new user account, using CS3 clean script and MS uninstall script, updating MS Installer, and all that jazz).
I eventually tried installing it on a different PC (Vista) and it installed fine there. I confirmed with 7-Zip's "Test Archive" feature on that system that the cab files on the disc were indeed fine and then copied all the setup files onto a flashdrive and brought that over to the Xp system. Strangely, no luck...it seems the .cab files get corrupted even on the flashdrive once they are added to the Xp system. About the only I haven't tried is updating to Xp SP3 (which I'm hesitant to do as I don't want to risk messing up my other programs that work fine with SP2, especially when I don't even know it will fix it). I read where one guy with a home network installed it using the CD-ROM from one system to install it onto the other system that he was having the install trouble with. He seemed to believe the problem was a combo hardware/software issue. I'm thinking of trying this but will need to get it setup. Do both PCs need to be running the same version of Windows? Any other possible fixes?confuzeled wrote:

What Flash drives have you tried? Could well be that someting goes wrong when the files get written to them. Still, since it seems you started out with the original discs on the system, that doesn't seem to be the problem. More likely some security tool is scanning the files and damaging or Windows' own DEP has for some reason been set for cabinet files. So I'd definitely look into that. the version of Windows shouldn't matter. CS3 was developed at the high times of XP, so it primarily was made for that andjust the otehr way around, Vista compatibility is the bare minimum required.

Recently the application icons in Spotlight's search window look odd.
There's no problem with the search itself, Spotlight hasn't slowed down, the indexing seems ok, in fact the whole system appears to be ok, let aside these odd looking icons.
Logging out or restarting the system works for a while, 3 Spotlight searches to be precisely, the icons are fine for a while, but the fourth search returns every application icon the way it is seen on the screenshots I made.
What I already tried:
A restart
Repaired permissions
Cleared cahes
Updated prebinding etc.
Update the whatis database
Cleaned font cache
Deleted Spotlight's preference file
and many many restarts
Again it works for a while, but the fourth Spotlight search will give these annoying corrupted icons.
Has anyone seen this before?
What may be the cause?
And more important: can it be fixed?
Thanks in advance!Update:
I don't think Gimp and quartz vm have been the cause.
The so-called QCDialog.droplet and another droplet which uses the same icon CocoaDialog.droplet are part of an application called OMCEdit (On My Command).
With this app you can add contextual menu items from a pre-installed list or you can create and edit your own.
I only use two of them: "Send with Mail" and "Set Image as Desktop Picture".
I have used these contextual menu items only a few times and I don't know how these droplets relate to the contextual menu items and how they would relate to the spotlight index.
Out of curiosity I have set a couple of desktop pictures and send files with mail via these contextual menu items and did some spotlight searches and everything is fine (by now), but as soon these annoying icons take over all the other application icons I think I'll uninstall OMCEdit.
And in retrospect, I didn't have to start a thread: rebuilding the spotlight index was a pretty obvious first solution.
What made me doubt from doing this is that I didn't aspect this indexing to be so quick and casual, I thought it would take hours and hours.
Thanks for the help! -
Hello.
Upon indexing my external hard drives (all partitioned) under Leopard I discovered that more or less all the metadata in the external hard disks in question is corrupted beyond elementary usability. The file types (creator. etc.); names; previews; symlinks and whatnot - everything is in utter shambles.
PDFs, for instance, are recognised as Terminal commands - and by all means refuse to open in Preview (they do in Terminal.app and bear Terminal icons); as a file with a given name is launched, a totally different, sometimes of obscure type, opens; as I highlight a file in order to command-I it to set its application type, a dialogue box is launched asking me whether I like to change the extension, and so on. Changing the "open with" application yields no result, since the relevant application won't actually open the file; deleting file icons doesn't appear to work either. Both Finder and Spotlight have become as good as useless in file management (e.g., of files located on external hard drives) under Leopard.
These troubles persist under 10.5.1 (they started with the installation of 10.5.0).
I'm curious whether the issues referred to have been encountered by fellow 10.5(.x) users...
cordially,
Leo inter hominemHow are you doing a search while the index is still rebuilding? How are you reindexing for that matter? *sudo mdutil -E pathtovolume* will erase the index and a new one will be created.
Is the privacy tab of Spotlight excluding any directories that would have these files? -
Spotlight keeps searching after finding everything?
Since Snow Leopard I'm using Spotlight as an application launcher (previously I used QuickSilver). I will, for instance, enter "act" in the Spotlight menu and find Activity Monitor, then launch it. I notice however that a lot of disk activity remains, and it turns out to be Spotlight still searching minutes after I exited the menu.
I already rebuilt the index with "sudo mdutil -Eav" but this has no effect.
I found this post that was never resolved...
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1782035&tstart=3165
Is this a bug or a feature? I'd hate to have to manually quit the search by clearing the search box every time I launch an application...I'm having the exact same problem and it seems to have started after upgrading to SL.
When using the Spotlight menu search, the activity indicator keeps spinning and the disk keeps chugging away even after all possible results have been exhausted.
As a test, I turned off all of the categories in the Spotlight Preferences except for Applications folder. Yet, if I search for "Firefox", it still keeps churning the disk and spinning the indicator after finding the result.
I did notice that it eventually stopped after about ten minutes, but a second search for the same term resulted in the same delay.

Mail search not working + Spotlight keeps indexing
I have an old problem that has resurfaced after creating a new user on my Mac. Mail search brings no results and Spotlight is constantly indexing - day in, day out. It never seems to get there. I tried turning my hard drive to private in Spotlight settings and then taking it out. Previously Spotlight seemed to get bogged down with external drives now it's stuck indexing my Mac.
Any advice? Is there a way I get unstick this?I can't believe that Apple have STILL not sorted this out. I haven't created a new user (so it's nothing to do with that), but Mail.app won't find anything when searching "Entire Message" in the current Mailbox or in "All Mailboxes". This has been ongoing since Leopard was first released, and we are now up to 10.5.8 without this being fixed.

Was told by the person at the APple store today to open new library on I-tunes - he felt the current library has something wrong and that opening a new library and transferring the music to there would perhaps prevent the ipod from becoming corrupt. Any ideas how to do this???
Need more info, if you want better response.
What do you mean by corrupting the iPod?
What is wrong with your iPod?
Which version of iTunes are you using?
What is the iPod software version as shown in the iTunes summary page?
Have a nice day!
