Spotlight Malfunctioning On OS X Yosemite

My email client is Thunderbird. Spotlight always found my Thunderbird messages with OS X Mavericks, but since I updated to OS X Yosemite that is no longer the case. In Thunderbird preferences, "Allow Spotlight to search messages" is enabled. Therefore, I just imported Thunderbird messages into Mail and now Spotlight is finding them. But I don't want to constantly do that. Please repair Spotlight.

Thanks very much, Weston, but your advice didn't help. I precisely followed the instructions at Spotlight: How to re-index folders or volumes several times. Incidentally, the Privacy tab at System Preferences > Spotlight is there to *prevent* Spotlight from searching certain locations, but I tried it anyway and then removed these items.

    Problem:
My Spotlight only offers local hits (including limited local dictionary results) which is very gimped down version of what is advertised.
"Spotlight pulls information from new sources like Wikipedia, news sites, Maps, iTunes, movie listings, and more." from https://www.apple.com/osx/design/
    Screenshot with simple example:
    So far I've tried:
Made sure I have everything checked on in Spotlight preferences.
    Rebooted.
Forced Spotlight to rebuild its index by first excluding Macintosh HD and then removing it from exclusions.
    Rebooted again.
Made sure location preferences that system services has access to my location.
Made sure there is no firewall restrictions, proxies etc.
Tried to change Safari search engine from DuckDuckGo to Bing
    Removed Adblock extensions from Safari.
I have no idea why my Spotlight isn't working as it's supposed to be.
Spotlight calculator and unit conversions work fine.
As an European I'm used to getting the cold shoulder from various nice iOS features (no movie listings in Siri, for example) but I cannot think why Wikipedia or Map results would be removed from Spotlight if I'm from Europe.
Any help would be appreciated but complete reinstall of Yosemite is unfortunately out of the question due to work.
Another example of Spotlight failing to offer anything from the web.

    Hi there Usernamenotok,
You may want to take a look at your Spotlight Suggestions and Location settings. The page below form the USer Guide has more information.
About Spotlight Suggestions - Mac Help
If you do not want your Spotlight search queries and Spotlight Suggestions usage data sent to Apple, you can turn off Spotlight Suggestions. Simply deselect the checkboxes for both Spotlight Suggestions and Bing Web Searches in the Search Results pane of Spotlight preferences in System Preferences on your Mac. If you turn off Spotlight Suggestions and Bing Web Searches, Spotlight will search the contents of only your Mac.
You can turn off Location Services for Spotlight Suggestions in the Privacy pane of System Preferences on your Mac by clicking Details next to System Services, then deselecting Spotlight Suggestions. If you turn off Location Services on your Mac, your precise location will not be sent to Apple. To deliver relevant search suggestions, Apple may use the IP address of your Internet connection to approximate your location by matching it to a geographic region.
Information collected by Apple will be treated in accordance with Apple’s Privacy Policy, which can be found at www.apple.com/privacy.
Note: Spotlight Suggestions may not be available in all regions.

  • Spotlight not finding utilities in Yosemite

    Hi,
I just tried typing in Actvity Monitor, then also Network Utility and then Terminal.
Spotlight doesn't find them. It's only finding wikipedia information and for Ne
    why?

    Hey Dave Taylor,
Thanks for the question. Based on the information you have provided, it sounds like Spotlight may still be indexing your drive after updating to OS X Yosemite. You can also try re-indexing:

  • Spotlight Malfunction

i thought that this problem would be solved in OS 3.0.1 but apparently not, i guess i am not the only one facing this problem. when u search for a song in spotlight and u click on it to start playing, the ipod will play a different song from the same album, i've tried it couple of time with different songs and guess what? the same problem exists, but i found out that if u turn OFF the shuffle option and also the repeat, it will play the correct song.
i hope there will be an update to solve this problem asap

    Send a bug report - http://bugreport.apple.com/
3.0.1 was only a security update. It was not a feature update.

can i use the usb port on the back of the time capsule
there must be a way  HELP PLEASE  many thanks

Don't panic we are working on it..
I am just avoiding Yosemite like the plague.. (plague on you Yosemite!!) .. as its networking is so bad it causes chaos on my network.. to all other devices.. even though only one device actually runs Yoyos!!
I am not sure how hard it is for you to go back to Mountain Lion.. or if you have a computer running ML on the network.. if so definitely use it.
What OS was last used by the MBP when you stopped using it or is it fully up to date. Is the computer in the network now? If so it is much easier to copy and paste the files from a live computer.
Did you encrypt the backup.. that would really mess things up or have an encrypted disk??
Have you used the normal TM tool in Yosemite to try and recover your files?? Or perhaps migrated the files.. this can work fine.. migration often being a better way of doing things.. although there are a few rules about using different user names.. etc.
There is another proviso here I must add.. Yosemite cannot see the backup quickly.. what I mean is that your backup is >500GB. Even by ethernet Yosemite version Time Machine can take more than 24hours just to index that.. maybe longer and by wireless a lot longer.. 3-5 times.. I do not know why spotlight is so slow in Yosemite.. but trust me.. it is pathetic. The yoyo got its string in a knot and seems to need to untangle it for every single file on the backup.
Be very patient if you open TM backup in Yosemite.. and definitely do this by ethernet not wireless.. otherwise you might die of old age beforehand.

  • How can I send messages to people without iMessage through my mac?

I just downloaded the new update to my Mac. I can send text messages, but still only to people with iPhone. How can I go back so that I can text everyone without iPhone as well?

    Hi anmoreno19,
I apologize, I'm a bit unclear on the exact nature of your question, and/or your current configuration. Are you currently using an iPhone with your Mac via Continuity? Continuity should allow you to send SMS messages from your Mac, via your iPhone, to any other phone, as outlined below:
SMS More ways to get your message across.
With OS X Yosemite and an iPhone running iOS 8, you can send and receive SMS text messages right from your Mac. So when friends text you — regardless of what phone they have — you can respond from your Mac or your iPhone, whichever is closest.2 All the messages that appear on your iPhone now appear on your Mac, too, so your conversation is up to date on all your devices. You can also start an SMS or iMessage conversation on your Mac by clicking a phone number in Safari, Contacts, Calendar, or Spotlight.

Software Update keeps wanting to reinstall Pro Video Formats 2.0.1. Each time it appears to install successfully, but then Software Update wants to install it again. I've seen the same issue reported in the Community for a much earlier OS X version, but I'm experiencing it on 10.10.3.

Try re-indexing Spotlight. The App,Store uses it to know why is installed on the computer.

  • In OS Yosemite the search function in Mail, Finder, Spotlight- does not work

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013)
    2,6 GHz Intel Core i7
    16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 2048 MB
    OS Yosemite,
    Finder versión 10.10.1
    Mail Versión 8.1 (1993)
In OS Yosemite the search function in Mail, Finder, Spotlight… does not work. Messages or documents with the search criteria are there and one could find them manually, but the search function fails to find them. Following advice from Apple Support (728965377):
    1. I applied an Apple protocol for adware removal (Remove unwanted adware that displays pop-up ads and graphics on your Mac); I had none, because I had formally utilized a similar protocol that I had found in Internet, actually an app that implemented automatically Apple's adware removal protocol.
    2. I rebuild the post boxes in Mail (Mail (Yosemite): Reconstruir buzones); It took a while but it functioned properly
    3. I re-install the System (OS X Yosemite: Reinstalar OS X); It took about 4 hours but there was no problem whatsoever with the installation.
Afterwards I searched for messages in Mail, and documents in Finder and Spotlight, without any difficulty. The search function in all of them was working properly. But the next time that I needed to search messages or documents, an hour later or so, the problem reappear and a couple of new issues occurred:
    1. in app RagTime 6.5.2 (Build 1821), www.ragtime.de, the menu bar disappears (it is invisible), when one performs certain operations, e. g., calculating a value with a formula, whether it is in a spreadsheet or some other component (text, drawing, etc.). After touching with the cursor the menu bar is visible again.
    2. after reading an e-mail in Mail or copying an address, this is seeing as a floating object in the finder and over every application. There is no logical way to get rid of the floating object and neither copying or deleting or cutting it. It is not a big issue but nonetheless bothersome.
    3. In Mail, messages with Flag or in VIP contacts cannot be seen in the appropriate folders, only in the Incoming mail folder, together with other messages. It seems to me, this issue is part of same search function problem.
    4. The preview function within Mail does not show the attached documents to a message, whether it is in the IN, OUT or Draft boxes.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try again to re-index Spotlight. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name or email address, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • Web Search not working in Yosemite Spotlight

    Hello,
One of the major features of Yosemite was that Spotlight could directly return web search results. But unfortubnaltly that isn't working for me.
Anyone else facing this issue or has already figured out a work around for this?
    Regards,
    Kartik Gaje

    Go to terminal and enter:
    rm -f ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Spotlight.plist
This will delete the preferences file. Restart your computer and it should work.

  • Spotlight doesn't find invisible files in Yosemite

Spotlight, under Yosemite 10.10.2, does not find invisible files, even when specifically requested to do it. The results window is empty.
Besides that, the insible property has disappeared from the Finder information windows:

Open System Preferences > Spotlight. Under the 'privacy' tab, drag your HD into the list from a Finder window. As soon as it's in the list, remove it.
Spotlight will now begin to reindex your entire HD. You'll see a dot in the middle of the spotlight icon and clicking the icon will tell you that it's re-indexing.

  • How do I move the spotlight search window out of the freaking way in Yosemite??????????

The spotlight search window is Yosemite is obtrusive. How can I get the old spotlight behavior back in Yosemite? Spotlight windows used to be on the side and out of the way. Now spotlight is completely worthless, if it is going block what I am working on. I don't need a luanchpad app. OS X is a multitask environment and spotlight kills the ability to multitask. My desktop and laptop computers are not tablets, so why is spotlight limiting their abilities.

There are lots of useful things you can do with spotlight. My most common uses are: (a) an app launcher, and (b) a quick calculator, (c) a search tool. Each of you probably have others.
When I'm using it as an app launcher, the pop-up window in the middle of the screen is not an issue. I type a few keys and it's gone. For example, "CMD-Spacebar S A Return" launches safari.
When I'm using it as a calculator the pop-up window is often annoying because it obscures the data I want to do calculations on. I have to remember all the numbers I want to type in. Could I just use the calculator app? Of course, but this wasn't an issue previously.
When I'm using it as a search tool the pop-up window is usually not a problem but sometimes obscures information I want to see
Bottom line based on my use cases is that I prefer the pop-up out of the way in the corner.

  • Getting Spotlight to Perform Conversions Yosemite

When I first installed Yosemite I was able to do money and speed conversions with no difficulty at all. Now, even after disabling everything except conversion, it just won't work anymore.
Anyone got an idea on this? I haven't been able to find anything online that does anything other than simply list conversion as something Spotlight does.
    Thanks.

Are you using the Finder in English?
I ask because I have found after trial and error than some conversions only work when I set the system language to English and region to United States.
When the language is set to Spanish and region to "Argentina" writing 10c or 80f in Spotlight gets no conversions, but writing 10k shows the equivalent temperature in Celcius and Fahrenheit degrees.
If I set the language to English, Spotlight recognizes 15c and 30f as temperatures, and does the appropriate conversions.
Other units like "km", liters, or joules seem to be working fine in both languages.

  • Links in Firefox and elsewhere malfunction under Yosemite

On my year old MacBook Pro all web links in Firefox and elsewhere malfunction under Yosemite.  They open a new tab and appear to connect to incorrect web addresses where no content is displayed; that is, if pressing the link will generate any action at all. At present if a link appears as an address one could, of course, labouriously go old school: the addy can be copied, a new tab opened,  the address pasted in, then hit return, and wait. If the link appears as a topic or subject in proxy for the address, i.e. no visible web address, the copy/cut/paste method will not work, therefore, the additional information sought at the link is lost to the viewer.  Remedy? Thanks.

    Seduc-
Thanks for the suggestion.  I interpreted that you meant a new user for the OS X 10.10 (the MacBook Pro), so I went to preferences and created a new user in "Users & Groups." The system automatically established that new user as my iCloud persona, including my indelible e-mail address [email protected].  It's not what I would have established had I known what would happen, but it exists, so that's Reality.  So, moving forward, the new user approach was not a successful resolve for the the inability to click links, and, thereby, be taken to the 'Link" represented site.   I appreciate your efforts in trying to help me resolve this annoying glitch in the new Yosemite OS. Be well, C.A.R.Alfa
