Spotlight menu vs Spotlight window

Ever since upgrading to Mavericks, some types of files will no longer appear in the spotlight menu even though they match the search terms. The same files actually do show up when the search is performed from a finder window and not from the menu .
It appears that this happens with files that the finder classifies as "developer" files (for instance, xml files).
Is there any way to change this and make these files appear in the spotlight menu as well?

I was on an iPhone when I responded previously. However, I am now looking at my Spotlight list in Mavericks and it has a Developer option and I can search for xml files, along with other “Developer” files.
I’m not sure why yours would not have the category.
Perhaps this will help: http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20110805192212447
It is the opposite, but should be same method to add a category back.

  • Spotlight menu keyboard shortcut stops working

Frequently, when I use the Spotlight menu keyboard shortcut to activate the Spotlight icon in the upper right corner of the screen, all I get is a highlight on the icon, but Spotlight itself doesn't open. So I can't start the search at all. However, the Spotlight window keyboard shortcut does work, and I can use Spotlight with no problems there. What is going on? The only way I can reactivate the simpler Spotlight menu version is by logging out of my account, then logging back in. It will work...but only for a while, then fail again, till I log out and log back in. Strange and frustrating.

    Rick,
Find and delete the following files, then restart:
    Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences Folder (com.apple.systemuiserver.plist)
Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences/ByHost Folder (com.apple.systemuiserver.000aXXXXadXX.plist) (X's will be numbers)
    Let us know what happens.

  • Spotlight menu hidden behind menu bar in Leopard when "Show Desktop" Expose

The Spotlight menu is partially hidden behind the menu bar in Leopard when using "Show Desktop" (part of Expose). I tried using "Show Desktop" with keyboard shortcut keys and screen corners, and this behavior still exists. I tried toggling Spaces on and off, and the behavior still exists.
This has been an issue since day one of using Leopard, and on every bootup. It's absolutely reproducible, and this is a bug, unless someone can prove me wrong? (Hopefully, I'm wrong.)

    Fixed in 10.5.2.

  • Spotlight Menu Extra is dead

It seems that my spotlight menu extra (along with all of the other Apple supplied menu extras) has died after the security update. I get the felling Apple went a bit overboard in trying to address the recent trojan/script vulnerability and killed menu extras also. I've tried chmod +x on the extras but it doesn't seem to work. The SystemUIserver process also seems hosed since it doesn't seem to remain alive. What gives Apple?

This seems to have been a problem with custom installations involving BezelServices.framework and FrontRow. Make sure the "custom" installations are removed and the original BezelServices.framework is restored.

  • Controlling Menu Bars of Windows Applications like IE and Editor with LabVIEW 6

    Hi everybody !
I'm trying to develop a vi (LabVIEW 6) which controls menu bars in
Windows Applications (IE, Editor, etc.) like "File-Save As..." or
"View-Source...". I'm pretty sure I've got to use the ActiveX
possibilities in LabVIEW, but I haven't been succesful. Any comments
    will help.
    Thanks

You can use Win32 API to simulate a key-press (e.g. ctrl-S for Save)
for IE or any window applications, as long as the application has
short cut for menu items, and active.
You can use external code (VC, VB, dephi, etc..) to build DLL, CIN, or
    ActiveX, call them in LabVIEW.
    I made "Send Keys.vi" in G Toolbox.
If the menu item doesn't has a shortcut, you can send a message (use
spy tool to find out) to the application.

  • HT5610 How do I show the menu bar for Window 8.1?

I cannot find the menu bar in Windows 8.1

    Authorization
iTunes Store- Authorize or deauthorize your Mac or PC.
In iTunes you use the Authorize This Computer or De-authorize This Computer option under the Store menu in iTunes' menubar. For Windows use the ALT-S keys to access it. Or turn on Windows 7 and 8 iTunes menus: iTunes- Turning on iTunes menus in Windows 8 and 7.

  • Weird issues with menu font, Spotlight indexing, etc.

    Hi all,
About a week ago, my PB G4 was freezing a lot; I'd have to hold the power button to shut it down, and if I tried to start it up again, it would chime and the light would come on, but the screen wouldn't light up and there would be no disc/fan sound. Or sometimes the screen would light up and the disc would boot, but it would either freeze at the grey screen or just after getting to my desktop. This was all similar to some issues I had over the summer when my hard drive was getting too full, but now I've got 22GB free (out of 90GB), so that shouldn't be a problem. I have OnyX and have run it a couple times in the last few months for cleanup.
So anyway, last week, I read what I could find on the forums here and in my user's guide. I tried resetting PRAM/NVRAM, but after the second chime sound (when it's okay to release the keys), it froze on the restart, so I wasn't sure if it worked or not. (I have since tried resetting this, and it's worked normally.) I booted from the Install DVD and reset the startup disk. I ran Apple Hardware Test, and everything checked out okay. My S.M.A.R.T. status was "verified." I also ran Disk Utility to repair permissions and disk, but got an error during disk repair that the repair could not be completed.
Somewhere in all of this, on one of the restarts, all of the text in the menu at the top of the screen changed so that each character was replaced with a small square with a capital letter A in it. This is annoying, though I've mostly been able to get around it using keystroke commands or just remembering where things were in the menus. The same character display issue is also true of the text beneath every icon on my desktop and in Finder windows-- though if I click on those as if to rename those files, I can see the name in a regular font. In the Finder, if I switch it to list view rather than icon view, the texts for the file and application names appear normal. When dialog boxes (for errors or commands) come up, the text in those sometimes appears as these little boxed characters.
Oddly enough, my computer's been working better since this happened... or at least, I haven't had any more restart issues. However, I've noticed some other weird things besides just the menu fonts. If I click the Spotlight icon to do a search, it always shows that it's indexing my computer. Yesterday I tried to print a Word document and just got an error simply saying "Word cannot print." I'm wondering if these and the menu font issues are all related to the disk errors that Disk Utility encountered, and what I should try next.
    Anybody encountered this before?

Hi, rhiannon. Your hard drive's directory is seriously corrupt — so seriously that Disk Utility can't fix it. You have three choices:
    1. If your hard drive's contents are backed up in the form of an up-to-date bootable clone of your hard drive from just before your problems began, simply clone the clone from your external backup drive back onto the internal drive. This will erase the internal drive, including whatever is corrupt on it, and replace its contents with the contents of your backup. You will be back to normal quickly.
    2. Use a more potent disk Utility such as DiskWarrior or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive directory. If you don't have all your data backed up elsewhere, this is the way to go.
    3. If you have your data backed up, but not in a bootable clone form, start up from your Tiger installer DVD, erase your hard drive, and reinstall everything on it from original software installer discs and from your data backups, afterward applying all the necessary software updates again. This is very time-consuming.

  • Spotlight not working with windows

    Hi there.
Just upgraded from snow leopard to Lion.
Spotlight is not working in a windows XP server cumputer where I have some files stored. I have access as a guest, can see the files but the search won't work (blank).
    Someone can help about this?

Check Spotlight system preferences, Privacy.  Is your drive listed in there?  Is so that is why it is not being searched. Select it and click the minus sign in the lower left to remove it from the list.
If it is not in there, then for some unknown reason maybe spotlight didn't index it correctly.  In that case drag the icon of the drive into the Privacy window and then remove it as just described.  This should cause Spotlight to reindex the drive.  If it takes long enough you should see a little dot in the center of the magnifying glass of the spotlight icon on the right side of the main menu.

  • How do I copy text from a Spotlight search result quicklook window?

Is it possible to copy text from the quicklook windows that appear when you hover over a Spotlight search result? It would be useful to be able to copy, say, a phone number or email address straight from the address book card that appears in Spotlight. The only options I see are to display the text in large type and to Facetime (for phone numbers) and to perform mapping functions for addresses; simple copying seems to be disabled for some reason.
I am using Spotlight in OS 10.7.5.

    Try this:
set the clipboard to item 1 of (get name of (static text of group 104 of UI element 1 of scroll area 1 of group 4 of window "Account Summary" of application process "Safari"))
    (10906)

  • Spotlight keyboard navigation and window size issues

I have two issues with Spotlight in Leopard and can't seem to find a solution.
    1. Keyboard navigation - If I open the spotlight list with command-space, type in my search and get my list, I can navigate up and down the list and open any item with the enter key. But there doesn't seem to be a way to use Quick View from the list. If I open a Spotlight Window with option-command-space (which I prefer) I can type in my search and get a list. But I can't get to the list to navigate it with the arrows without using the mouse to click on one of the items first. Once I have one item selected it is great to scroll through them with the arrow keys and then use Quick View by using the space bar to open and close the view. Is there any way to move the cursor from the search enter box into the results list in the Spotlight Window view using just the keyboard? Or is there a way to use the keyboard to invoke Quick View on the Spotlight list view?
    2. When opening the Spotlight Windows View with the option-command-space command, the window opens up to a relatively small size. I would like it to open to a much larger window, but I can't seem to find a way to do it. I resize the window and change the column size and positions to the way that I like them, but once I close out of the window it doesn't save that configuration. I have to start over every time. Is there a solution?

I just realized this is in the wrong forum. I've posted it in the Leopard forum.

I have not customized anything. All my other browsers are fine, it is only Firefox that has this issue and it's on 2 different pc's.
I have tried using the default theme and even downloaded, enabled, & disabled 3-4 other themes and none of them effect the transparency or the blacked out tabs.
