Spotlight no longer indexes remote server
I have a small network of Mac, one of which acts as our "server" simply by sharing a raid disk set up. Spotlight on the other Macs has always been able to index the contents of this "server". Because the results from searches have lately been eratic, I wondered if Spotlight had stopped indexing the raid drive. It seemed it has.
I tried to add the drive to Spotlight's Privacy area so I could remove it again, as mentioned in a number of threads. It will not allow me to add it. I get this "Privacy List Error The item couldn't be added or removed because of an unknown error."
I get the same message no matter which Mac I try.
I tried updating the software on the "server", checking the permissions in the Get Info area, turning every computer off and rebooting them all.
I'm not sure what to do now.

Mountain Lion Spotlight no longer indexes "codecs" for Apple Lossless files?
Hi, I was recently trying to find some Apple Lossless files stored on my hard drive, and I tried searching using Spotlight's "codec" option (by typing "lossless" into the search field in the Finder). However, nothing came up. Upon further investigation (by looking at the info windows for various Apple Lossless files), it appears as though Mountain Lion no longer indexes the "codec" for Apple Lossless files, and therefore doesn't let you search by it. (Although I haven't tried this recently on at least Lion or Snow Leopard systems, I can verify that on OS X Leopard, which I still have running on an old machine, both the description "Apple Lossless" next to the codec field in the Info window came up, and it would also let you search by it.)
I was just wondering if anyone else might have experienced this on their Mountain Lion systems? Thanks!I regret to inform this still has not been solved, though deleting the externalrecords helps purge those remnants away.

Can no longer connect to remote server via VPN
I recently installed OS 10.5.8, and have found that I can no longer connect to my server at work. The VPN itself (via PPTP) works fine, it's just that when I try to connect to the remote server (via Connect to Server) I get a dialogue saying 'A volume failed to mount.' A further dialogue says 'Sorry, the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occurred. (Error code -6602)'
Has anyone found a way around this, please? I'm disabled and I need to be able to work from home – without the connection I'm stuffed! Obviously I've tried rebooting the machine etc, but nothing seems to help.
Thank you for any assistance you can give.
Kitty.For some random reason this connection has begun working again – please ignore the question!

Spotlight in 10.5.5 no longer indexing iPhoto 08 content
Problem: This used to work in OS X 10.4.11 and iPhoto 08: In iPhoto provide a comment for some photos. In Spotlight search for those photos by providing keywords from the comments. Spotlight finds the photos, and when I click on one of them iPhoto opens and the photo is selected.
Subsequently I did a clean install of OS X to 10.5.3, updated to 10.5.4, and installed iPhoto 08 from the iLife 08 CD/DVD, then placed a copy of my iPhoto Library in my Pictures folder. I was able to find commented photos using Spotlight.
After updating to 10.5.5 this no longer seems to work. That is, I can still find photos in Spotlight that I could find before updating, but new comments don't seem to be indexed. I have tried modifying the metadata of all 6,000 photos by assigning them a keyword, shutting down iPhoto, waiting, restarting iPhoto and removing the keyword. I have tried reindexing both the whole harddisk and just the Pictures folder (by placing them in the exclusion list, then removing them), but that only made the situation worse. Spotlight no longer finds any photos in iPhoto. I have even tried removing all /.Spotlight* files from the harddisk and reindexing using the Terminal. The commands are performed, but the result is the same. Mails and other documents that require import plugins are found in Spotlight, so this seems to be very specific to iPhoto (08).
Does anyone with the same setup (10.5.5 and iPhoto 08) have no/the same problem? Can anyone suggest a solution. I have reported this to Apple, but have received no reply.
Regards,
RichardI don't have an immediate answer, but you can start with http://www.pinkmutant.com/articles/Leopard/leospot.html and my mod to Finder's Find at http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6725932 for what you can change so you can find stuff.

Have changed the "Index" of my website in Dreamweaver and followed the "Put" instructions to upload it back to the "Remote Server," but when I go onto the web to check it, the main (Index) page has not changed. Help!
This is a duplicate post; see How do I upload from Dreamweaver CS6?

After upgrade to Yosemite SMB connection to remote server no longer works. WHY?
HI,
Before I upgraded to Yosemite I had mapped a connection to a directory on a remote server using SMB. After upgrading from OS 10.9 these connections no longer work.
Any idea why? Nothing on either the remote network server or the SMB mapping has changed.There appears to be a problem with Firefox 20 with UNC paths when using roaming profiles on a server.
This is currently investigated and tracked via this bug report.

I can no longer access my remote server files
Hi,
After connecting successfully to my remote server, when I select to list the files these do not display. I restarted DW, tested my server connection and nothing changes. Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.

Can't upload "put" files to remote server unless they are in a folder. Please help.
I have done many searches on this and found no solutions. Here is the problem:
When I upload a file from my local site to the remote server it works fine as long as that file is contained in a folder.
Example:
I can upload an image from my images folder, or a template page from my template folder with no problem.
BUT, I can not upload any web/html pages, my CSS page, site map, or any file for that matter that is simply in the root directory but not in it's own folder.
When I try to do that I get this error:
index.html - error occurred - An FTP error occurred - cannot put index.html. Access denied. The file may not exist, or there could be a permission problem. Make sure you have proper authorization on the server and the server is properly configured.
File activity incomplete. 1 file(s) or folder(s) were not completed.
Files with errors: 1
index.html
So every time I make a change to my index page I can't upload it to the server without getting that error unless I use a 2nd party program like Filezilla - which works fine. It is only Dreamweaver doing this.
I have been using dreamweaver for a long time and had no problems with this site. This all started happening out of no where. and it is happening on my work and home computer.
I made no changes to my server preferances or anythijng like that.
I was just doing my thing - being happy - and then BAM, not happy any more....Hi there. First off thank you for your interest and your help.
I have done what you suggest probably 30 times as I have obsessed over this crazy problem for a couple straight weeks before I finaly gave up on CS5.5
I'm not sure what you mean by REMOTE server. The only server settings I am aware of are the ones in Dreamweaver. Here they are:
5.0 Settings:
Server Name = the same values on each
Connect Using = FTP
FTP Address = same numeric value on 5.0 & 5.5 port 21
User name = same on both
Password = same on both
Root directory = is blank (I have tried it using / with no luck as well)
web URL = http://ftp.westbrookadvertising.com/www/htdocs/
Passive FTP is checked & Use FTP Peformance optimization is checked.
5.5 Settings:
Server Name = the same values on each
Connect Using = FTP
FTP Address = same numeric value on 5.0 & 5.5 port 21
User name = same on both
Password = same on both
Root directory = is blank (I have tried it using / with no luck as well)
web URL = http://ftp.westbrookadvertising.com/www/htdocs/

Spotlight hanging while indexing
If anyone has a solution to perhaps delete a corrupt spotlight database i'd be grateful. I am getting frequent finder (spinning wheel) hangs and spotlight gets stuck indexing. I'm at wits end. Reinstalled the latest system multiple times - tried to search for offending software - still getting hangs.

Application not working after deployment in remote server
I have a standard web application working in my localhost. But when I deploy the same in a remote server it gives the following exception. This happens for all the jsp:useBean. why is the container not able to fund the Beans. The Tomcat is installed properly and I use it's manager tool to deploy the WAR.
I checked the WEB-INF/lib directory and it has all the required JARs.

Edited by: danbrown on Feb 8, 2008 8:32 AMYour error stack refers to a class with the package sequence "com.news.pubt.weather....." but your jsp file refers to a class "com.news.pub.weather...
Is there an error in your jsp page? If so, did you change the package name, and do you still have old class files on the classpath on your local machine with the old name?
Anyway, the top of the error stack refers to line number 68 in the Container class. So that is where you should see a problem regarding the NullPointerExcpetion. You could post that line of code. -

After updating to OSX 10.7.3, my search (spotlight) no longer works. Is there a fix for this?
Have you tried going to System Preferences > Spotlight > Privacy and dragging your hard drive into the box then drag it back. That will trigger a re-index.

Can no longer access remote site in DW CS5
I've recently upgraded to CS5, when I attempted to upload a PS file to my website in DW I foolishly denied the permissions for CS5. This has changed my remote server somehow so I can no longer update the website. Also I've lost all my folders on the remote site and there is now just an empty folder with the name "pub". The following is the error msg I receive when trying to upload files:
public_html/e-mail/ - error occurred - Unable to create server folder /public_html/e-mail/. Access denied. The file may not exist, or there could be a permission problem. Make sure you have proper authorization on the server and the server is properly configured.
public_html:e-mail:qxblast.html - user cancelled
File activity incomplete. 1 file(s) or folder(s) were not completed.
Files with errors: 1
/public_html/e-mail/
I've double checked the folders, ftp information, proxies and everything but nothing seems to change this site.
Any advice or ideas of how to fix this would be greatly appreciated, thanks.Mac? Windows?
Firewall?
Also contact your host just to be safe because sometimes these end up being ownership issues which, in a shared hosting environment, cannot be changed by you. You would only be able to change them if you are in a VPS/Dedicated environment. -
Hi! I'm hoping you can help eliminate my frustrations....
I purchased a macbook pro 13 inch because my other macbook 2009 was already low on memory and I thought it best to upgrade. I needed more space but wanted also the ability to access remotely and not worry about computer being stolen with all the information on it because I travel A LOT.
I asked the salesperson if I purchased the 128g MBP and the time capsule would i be able to access all my information remotely? The thought process was:
1. With over 500GB already in my previous MB i would transfer all that information from the old MBP to the time capsule where it would be at home safe
2. set up the time capsule to access all files remotely (including iphoto, itunes, videos, etc)
Because my information already was over 500Gb, buying the 2TB was going to be plenty of space. So I went with purchasing the MBP with lower space (128G) + the 2TB Time Capsule.
Now I'm trying to set everything up, was on the phone for 2.5 hours, spoke to 5 reps and finally received an answer: CAN'T DO IT. DOESN'T WORK THAT WAY.
I kept searching online and see that
1. the Time Capsule can only be used as a time machine for backups. Can't use as a remote server but others say you set up a server file and works.
2. I can't place the iphoto library or itunes library there to access remotely because I risk it being corrupted (sales person said it would run slow but worked well)
SO, the big question...can SOMEONE please help me determine if this was worth the $350 purchase because right now it feels like i'm better off sticking with my external drive from WD that i have been working with. I'm seeing ZERO value add for this device....
PLEASE...if someone knows if i can really get it to work for what I need, I would truly appreciate your advice because right now FRUSTRATION is at it's max...especially after 2.5 hours on the phone with little to no solutions.Some of this depends on your home internet speed.. do you have a fancy 1Gbit link.. with 100Mbps uplink.. well that is faster than rest of the internet.. so you can well support some sort of home cloud device.
I would also strongly recommend business level internet accounts with static Public IP address.. not dynamic.
For most people with limited upload speed.. 1mbit is standard where I live.. and real throughput is 800Kbps. Forget it.
I would never advise anyone to depend on remote access.. for anything with 1Mbps upload.. and even 5Mbps is going to be a struggle.. Maybe 10 or 25Mbps you can function.
It is simply not the right way to do things. You are far better off carrying around a 500GB thunderbolt drive.. which weighs next to nothing and is as fast as the internal drive.. or use a standard cheap 2.5" USB hard disk which you can get up to 2TB now.
Backup to TC but not by Time Machine.. or backup to the cloud.. for sure..
You can also access some files in the cloud. That is much better than using a TC at home.. where you then have a domestic quality link to the internet.
Apple specifically say not to use iphoto on network drives.. that means any network setup.
iTunes you can use from a network drive.. but if you have a massive library and slow upload speed it will never finish loading.
The internet for the most part is just not there yet.. maybe another 20years. In Australia that will be 100years with the current bunch of Philistines running the place. And if you do international travel and depend on networks in hotels or cafes.. well forget it.. they are going to give you enough bandwidth to load your email as long as it is pure text.
Apple have a 2week return period.. just take it back if you are unhappy with it. -
Help! Downloading a file from remote Server
I am currently doing a program for downloading a specified file from the remote server i.e from any website. If the downloading process stops in between due to some problem in the internet connection, then my program needs to start the downloading the file again to the local directory from where it was left.
My idea is that, getting the size of the remote file initially when the downloading process starts and if the connection is interrupted, i will check the size of the downloaded file in the local directory with the remote file size. If the remote file size is greater than the localfile size, i need to start downloading the file where it was left i.e start downloading the next bit from the remote file.
Is there any way to get the contents of the remote file from the specified point say 50th byte from a total file size of 100 kb using java?
which concept to use FtpClient or sockets?
iam a little bit confused!!!!
Please help me.
Thanks in advance.For HTTP you can use this function to open the stream with offset:
InputStream openStream(URL url, long offset) {
try {
URLConnection uc = url.openConnection();
uc.setRequestProperty("Authorization", "Basic " + (new BASE64Encoder()).encode("username:password".getBytes()));
if (offset != 0 && url.openConnection().getHeaderField(0).toUpperCase().startsWith("HTTP/1.1"))
uc.setRequestProperty("Range", "bytes=" + offset + "-");
return new BufferedInputStream(uc.getInputStream());
} catch (MalformedURLException mfURLe) {
System.err.println("Malformed URL in Client Updater. Unable to receive update list: " + mfURLe.getMessage());
} catch (IOException ioe) {
System.err.println("Unable to open input stream: " + ioe.getMessage());
return null;
}
