Spotlight no longer searches external drives

Spotlight has stopped searching my external firewire drives.
I had to do a couple of hard boots when Leopard hung up and after those, spotlight started re-indexing all drives and I let it do it. After that I can no longer find anything on external drives with Spotlight.
Any suggestions to fix?

Found the fix. Go into spotlight under system preferences and choose the privacy tab. Add the external HD you are wanting to reindex. Then remove it. This forces spotlight to reindex the drive and fix your problem. Worked for me.

  • Spotlight won't search external hard drive

I have recently upgraded to Yosemite but when I use Spotlight to search for a file spotlight does not search or include any files on my external hard drive. I have had one community member suggest to explicitly check the Spotlight index via command line. I tried to follow his instructions but my limited skills produced a zero. Unfortunately, he hasn't replied back for further instruction.
Can anyone else please shed some light on this annoying problem?

    Hi chalkybones,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that you would like Spotlight to locate files on your external hard drive but it is unsuccessfully locating them. In this situation I would recommend first re-indexing the folders or volumes in Spotlight if you have not yet done some. Please use the attached article as a reference on how to complete the process.

  • Can't search external drives (RAID, FW), can't eject

    Hello,
I'm posting a link to my original post because i'm having a lot of trouble figuring this out, and perhaps someone here has some thoughts. ANY help would be appreciated.
Brief overview: i cannot do a search on any of my external drives - RAID, FW, or USB - which makes for a very inefficient workflow. From what i've been able to figure out so far, it seems like it's an issue with Spotlight trying (but failing) to index the drives, which runs me into the other problem: when trying to eject any of these drives, i get the "this drive is in use and cannot be ejected. Try quitting apps and trying again" even if none of them are in use.
I tried the Spotlight/Privacy add-then-delete option and get an error saying i "cannot add this drive because of an unknown error". I tried to force indexing with an app called Highlight. I Repaired permissions. I did a clean erase & install. LaCie tech support wasn't any help. No dice for any of these.

Sounds like a corrupted OS install then, or you need to trash the preferences for spotlight. I've no idea how to do that, but might fix it if you've not selected these externals to not be searched with spotlight.

  • Spotlight looses index for external drives

    Hello
why is that I have to re index my external drives all the time. it seems to me spotlight can not keep the index, when ever i try search in my external hard-drive spotlight finds nothing even so i can see files with the search name right in front of me. I have to go to preference than add the hard drive at the no search column and delete out if it then spotlight starts the indexing again which takes 2+hours and slows things down. it is good for a while and bam it is gone again and have to do all the steps over again any idea

The Spotlight search of my external hard drive gets buggy after a while and just stops seeing items on the drive. It is a terabyte drive that takes FOREVER to reindex and bogs down my MPB 2.5 in the process. Even with a Firewire 800 connection. I'd LOVE to be able to attach this to another mac and run the reindex. Guess that would only work if the index file was actually on the external drive, and not on the boot drive. The genius/apple care guys at Mac gave some vague/dodging answer like.. we don't support external hard drives.
    LOL! that's a good one.
Does anybody have a real suggestion?
the spotlight index IS stored on the drive itself so if you want to reindex it using a different computer, go for it. just make sure to use the same OS computer. DO NOT reindex it using a tiger computer.

  • Issue using  "Find" in Bridge to search external drive

When using "Find" in Bridge (version 2.1.1.9) in CS3 to search for files on an external hard drive I must either check "Include Non-Indexed Files" or go to the external drive and build the cache for the folders I want to search. Otherwise the files will not be found.
Having to build the cache in the external drive or use non-indexed search slows down the search process. Is there a way around this. Bridge preferences are set to "Automatically Export Caches to Folders". I use SyncBack for back up to the external drive.

Thank you for the reply. I thought that once the cache is built and exported to a folder, that folder would be indexed and ready for a search by Find. And when copying that folder to another drive the files would remain indexed and available to a search by Find on that drive.
I have not copied the central cache to the external drive. So I assume that when using Find to search the external drive it is looking at the caches in each folder on that drive.

  • Spotlight not working with External Drive (Wireless)

I have setup the new Airport Extreme (AE) and connected WD 500GB via USB to the (AE). Spotlight does not recognize the external drive when it is connected to the AE. It will of course work if I directly attach external drive to my Macbook Pro. Any ideas on how to get Spotlight to "see" and index this external drive. Thanks.

I was able to get my Airport disk working using the following Terminal command:
sudo mdutil -i on /Volumes/Maxtor\ HD
Replace Maxtor HD with the name of your HD. (The slash indicates a non-breaking space.)
It took awhile and then it started indexing.

  • Using faces to search external drive

how do i go about getting faces to search an external drive or even another computer over a wireless network.

faces can not be separated form your iPhoto library - it only works with photos that have been imported to the iphoto library
And you should not access your iPhoto library over a wireless network - it is extremely problematic
You can move your iPhoto library to a directly connected Mac formatted external drive - Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

  • Mountain Lion 10.8 no longer recognizes external drives

I just upgraded to 10.8 and my two external drives are no longer recognized (either in Finder or the desktop). One is a Drobo raid drive and the other is a Seagate 2 TB external drive. Both have been working fine for years under the previous OS version but are not recognized by 10.8. I have rebooted both the iMac and the drives but nothing shows up. Drobo provides a desktop dashboard that does see the Drobo drive and reports no errors. I use both drives for backups which no longer works since the drives are not recognized. Any suggestions?

Yes, both there.. but 'repair disk permissions" and "verify disk" are greyed out on Drobo and all are greyed out on the Seagate.

  • Searching External Drive on Server

We recently added a 1 Tb external hard drive to our server and when we try to search for files on it, it only shows us folders, never an individual file. And it only shows the folder, not what's inside it.
I've added it the the privacy window in Spotlight and left it for anywhere from 1 minute to 24 hours before removing it and it still won't find files.
    Any suggestions??

In the GetInfo window, click the disclosure triangle of "Sharing and Permissions". This will open up that part showing the Owner, Group, and everyone permissions., and also show the little gear in the center of the bottom margin. Click on the little gear and you get a submenu that includes propagate permissions.
Using Server Admin, connect to your Server and log in with a Server Admin account. Click the File Sharing Icon, and select the drive you want to look at. The default display shows permissions in the bottom pane, and makes clearer what is the Posix default file permissions ("inherited" file permissions) and what is the "add-on" Access Control List (ACL) permissions. Double click on the drive or folder to navigate more deeply, and use the buttons to set permissions. Help is available.

  • Spotlight no longer searches

spotlight was working properly until i woke it from sleep today and now it won't search anything. i just bring it up and start typing and there's no reaction from spotlight at all. i repaired my disk permissions and it found a couple things wrong. since then, spotlight will return "no results" for anything i type.
search in the finder doesn't work either, giving the same "no results". search in application help menus still work though.
i haven't installed anything new recently either.
    any suggestions?

Drag you drive icon to the exclusion window in the Spotlight Preference Pane in System Preferences. Then, quit SP. Relaunch them, and delete the drive, and Spotlight should re-index.

  • Neither Spotlight nor Finder searching SHARED drives

I have two shared drives (both accessed via a Time Capsule) on my local network (LAN). I have total access to these two drives (reading,writing,etc.).
How can I perform a search for a particular file on these drives?
When I attempt to search via Finder, I enter the name of a file I know exists on one of these drives (just to test the process out) in the Search box in Finder. I click the Shared and File Name buttons, but nothing happens, no files found, nothing, zip, nada.
I know this file exists on one of these drives.
Why don't I see any results when I attempt to perform a search on Shared drives?
(NOTE: This works if I search on "This Mac").
    Ideas?
    Thanks

Apparently this is a bug in 10.5.6.
Several posts throughout these forums indicate that many folks are experiencing the same issue.
We can search within individual folders on a Sharepoint, but cannot perform a search of the entire sharepoint.
    Strange.
Apple, are you aware of this?
    Thanks

  • Spotlight No Longer Searches Trash

I'm new to Snow Leopard, and just noticed that Spotlight wasn't finding files in my Trash. I reindexed, but items in the Trash still aren't showing up when I search with Spotlight. Was this changed in Snow Leopard, or is this a PEBKAC error?

Thanks, Carolyn. It's nice to know, though probably more trouble than it's worth.
(FWIW: I don't particularly like Spotlight—it rarely provides consistent, complete results (I usually use the Sherlock-like +Find Any File+ <http://apps.tempel.org/FindAnyFile/index.html>); and I like Terminal even less—I'm not a programmer, and Apple gave us the GUI to replace the command-line interface.)
