Spotlight no longer shows preference files.

Just upgraded to Leopard and found that spotlight no longer shows preference files in search results for a specific file name. This is a distinct step backward from Tiger IMO. Can anyone tell me how to search for prefs files? Thanks.

you have to include system files in a search. they are excluded by default. enter command+f in finder to start finder search. click on "kind", scroll and click on "other". in the resulting popup select "system files" and change the setting to include them in the search. if you want to make this default see this macosx hint

    * command-cllicking the item, which opens the enclosing folder.
    * selecting and hitting command-i to see the get info window, which has the path.

  • My Download folder no longer shows downloaded files

I have a MacBook. I changed nothing that I know of. Suddenly when I download files they say they're going to the Download folder but when I open the folder to retrieve (or clean out) old files, there's nothing visible. It appears the file is empty.
I have no other option to choose from while downloading. They just automatically go to the folder. Yet the folder's empty.

    Hi ...
Assuming you are using Safari ... might be a corrupted preference file (.plist)
    Quit Safari if it's open.
    Go to   ~/Library/Safari
Move the Downloads.plist file from the Safari folder to the Trash.
Relaunch Safari. Try downloading a file.

    They are kidding, right?
Spotlight ONLY now looks at file names?
Who on earth thought it was a good idea to remove this inredibluy valuable function

You can still search for filenames using the command-F search window. The default is a contents search, but as you are typing in the search term, a temporary drop-down box appears that offers a "Filename contains …" search option:
If you click on this option, the search box will indicate the change to a filename search rather than a contents search:

  • Spotlight search not showing all files

    Hello,
I am trying to do a spotlight search on several 10.4 machines that I know have a certain folder.
When I do a "name contains" search for this folder, the search does not find it on some machines.
However, the same search finds the folder on other machines.
On the machines where it doesn't find the folder, it does find files with-in the folder, if I select them, I can see the path.
Is there an issue with the spotlight search where it sometimes won't return folders?
    ARD version 3.0
    Server version 10.4.8
    Client machine version 10.4.6
    Thanks for any help.

Have you specified any settings in Spotlight's System Preference pane, such as deselecting certain file types? If not, reindex the drive.

  • Problem Folders on my desktop are no longer showing any files inside

I have been using windows 7 quite a bit lately, but I logged on snow leopard, and all the folders on my desktop are empty. They show that they are still trying to load what is in them, but nothing ever comes.
this is obviously a huge problem as it currently appears all my files are gone...anyone have a solution or having this problem as well?

I went through all of these steps.  I also downloaded AVG antivirus.  It detected nine files that may have been malware and I deleted them.  I have restarted my computer several times after this and the folders on my desktop are still not displaying properly.  Also my folders are unable to be dragged around the desktop.  The whole desktop is messed up.

  • Finder no longer showing full file name of mp3

How do i get finder to show me the full and complete file name (in my case, artist-title-label) for these mp3s? i can see the full name in the path at the bottom but i want to see it when i search it. My workflow with Ableton and creating text tracklists for music mix sets depends on it. I need the two file names to match rather than the mp3 just showing the info less the artists name.
    thank you.

Hey there, I don't know if you knew that already. If you did - Welp I gave it a shot. If you don't want to convert files maybe you should look at metabliss.com to help lighten the load. I would definitely make a copy and try it on PC to see if the same issue occurs.

  • ITunes 9.2 does not show iTunesU files at all (iTunes 9.1 did)

    Hi everybody,
After upgrading to iTunes 9.2, iTunes stopped showing iTunes U files I had moved to my 30GB 5th gen iPod (Windows formatted).
When I first move iTunes U files to my iPod, they show up in iTunes under Music, with iTunesU as the genre. This is fine, I know the firmware does not allow an iTunesU category for this iPod, and it is OK. But after using my iPod for a while, iTunes will no longer show these files. They are gone in iTunes 9.2 (this was not the case in previous versions). My iPod still shows these files, and I can play them just fine. But I cannot see them in iTunes, and I cannot delete them. (Can I delete files in my iPod without using a computer?) These files stay as Other under iTunes, and take up space, but they are invisible to iTunes (on Mac or Win).
I have already gone through one cycle of reformatting my iPod using iTunes, I don't want to do it again.
Is anybody else seeing this? Any workarounds, or is this a bug with new iTunes 9.2?

I am experiencing a similar problem, as well. I have downloaded some Apple Developer videos that I wanted (available on iTunes U) and converted them (within iTunes) to the standard def iPhone/iPod video format. I would check to make sure that you've
The weird thing is that the files sync'ed over into my library - and I am able to watch the videos just fine on my iPhone 3GS (running iOS 4 with iTunes 9.2 (61)). However, for the life of me I cannot get the iTunes U playlist that I created to sync properly with my iPhone. It copies the playlist name - which is a good sign - but if I go to it on my iPhone it's completely empty.
Here is what I have tried so far:
    1) Verified that the iTunes U videos have been converted properly and can play on my iPhone
    2) Verified that there are iTunes U videos in my playlist (which I have named "Apple Development Videos"
    3) Verified that "Sync iTunes U" has been checked within iTunes - with the option selected to automatically include all items of all collections (although I have tried it by explicitly including individual iTunes U content and explicitly selecting the "Apple Development Videos" playlist as well)
    4) Manually syncing iTunes with my iPhone - the "Apple Development Videos" list comes over, the videos in iTunes U are playable on the iPhone, but the playlist is still empty
To make things worse, I figured I would try manually adding the iTunes U videos to the playlist on the iPhone. When I do that, the videos STILL do not appear in the playlist - and when it syncs with iTunes I have a playlist that has duplicate entries.
Sounds like a bug to me; hopefully this will be resolved in the near future

  • Files no longer show up on server

I have a PC server with all my files on it. I work on the files from the mac. It has to be set up this way for our RIP to access the files. My question is some files are no longer showing up on the mac. They are on the PC and when I delete and copy them back to the PC they show up on the mac. Why are they not showing up on the mac anymore? Is there a easy way to fix this? I'm pretty sure its a file sharing problem but I have no idea how to fix it. Thanks

To configure a Mac OS X user account so that .DS_Store files are not created when interacting with a remote file server using the Finder, follow the steps below.
Note: This will affect the user's interactions with SMB/CIFS, AFP, NFS, and WebDAV servers.
    1 Open the Terminal.
    2 Type:
    defaults write com.apple.desktopservices DSDontWriteNetworkStores true
    3 Press Return.
    4 Restart the computer.
If you want to prevent .DS_Store file creation for other users on the same computer, log in to each user account and perform the steps above—or distribute a copy of your newly modified com.apple.desktopservices.plist file to the ~/Library/Preferences folder of other target users.
These steps do not prevent the Finder from creating .DS_Store files on the local volume. These steps do not prevent previously existing .DS_Store files from being copied to the remote file server.

  • IMovie '11 will no longer show project or open the project file

Upon finishing a project, I was ready to do a Share > Export Movie command, and opted first to do a restart on my computer (by first doing a File > Quit in iMovie).
Now my project no longer shows up in the projects pane!
While the import of the original footage still exists in the Event Library pane, the project is nowhere to be found in the Projects Library pane.
In addition, while the project file that sits in my iMovie Projects folder is there, it will not open!
When I option click it to open with iMovie, iMovie launches normally (displaying no messages) but does not show the project in the projects pane!
What has happened here?  The iMovie Projects folder is on my internal hard drive and I have not ever moved any files around. Is there any way to get it back?
I have tried to open my project file on a different computer that is networked in the same room, but the same happens: iMovie launches normally, however the project does not appear in the the Projects Library pane.
As a test, I have created a couple new projects that I have named "Test1" and "Test2" and they indeed show up normally every time I launch iMovie or do an "open with iMovie" command from the iMovie Projects folder.  But my origional project just doesn't work. Please help!
If this is of any help: my origional project comprises of a 26 minute MOV file that I have simply imported in iMovie and have added subtitles (no transitions).  I had been working for two days on it, and there were 2 times early on when I had to force quit iMovie because I was getting the spinning ball - I was worried about whether the changes were saved, but each time they were indeed saved and I could access the project normally. (I had considered this was caused by a shortage of memory, so I did not think anything of it.) Since then and up to the moment of the problem, I had occasionally shut down or restarted my computer (by first doing a File > Quit in iMovie) with no problems up to now.
Looking through the forum, I have tried 1) logging in/out, 2) logging in as a visitor, 3) creating a new admin account, in addition to 4) subtracting the iMovie preferences file from the Library, but nothing has worked.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
I'm running Mac OSX 10.7.5 and iMovie '11 version 9.0.8 on an iMac 27 inch, 2.8 GHz i7 with 4 GB ram.

    Are you running Time Machine?

  • .BridgeSort Files No Longer Showing Up In Bridge

Hello, my <.BridgeSort> bridgesort files are no longer showing up in bridge? I also get an error "Bridge encountered an error and is unable to read the cache. Please try purging the central cache in Cache Preferences to correct the situation." I have tried this and it did not fix the problem. Any ideas??
    Thanks!

    Sam:
Would one of those files you delete be "Library6.iPhoto" located in the top layer of the iPhoto Library folder? That's the dB file that links all of the original files to the thumbnails to the albums, slideshows, etc. That's probably the most critical of any of the library files.
If you did delete it then a new one gets created and the library will essentially have no photos in it even though the originals files are still present.
If you feel that's the case then you will need do start over with a new library and import the Originals folder from the old library as follows:
1 - move the old iPhoto Library folder to the desktop.
2 - launch iPhoto with the Option key depressed and, when asked, opt to create a new library.
3 - with the new library open drag the Originals folder from the old library on the Desktop into the open library window.
This will create a new library with the same rolls as in the old one. However, many of the rolls will have different dates which can be edited in the Info window at the bottom of the Source pane
To help prevent this same problem in the future read the tip at the end of my signature and Don't tamper with files in the iPhoto Library folder from the Finder.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.

  • Lightroom is no longer showing the .dng files

Lightroom is no longer showing the .dng files, everything else(Exif data and histogram), but no viewable picture. It did ask me for my serial number today, which I typed in. After that I went to import new RAW files, and the files themselves imported, but will not show the picture. None of my .dng files will show the picture now.

It seems that the ACR cache is either corrupt or the whole plugin might have got some corruption.
You can go ahead and delete the Lightroom x Catalog Previews.lrdata by following the location from the link below accrding to the OS. (x denotes version)
    http://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/kb/preference-file-locations-lightroom-4.html.
After relaunch if it still doesnt show the images try uninstall and reinstall of Lightroom by removing it from Programs & features if on Win 7 or from Add & Remove in Windows XP.
If you are on mac just take the Lightroom complete file and trash it & directly install the most recent update of Lightroom.
