Spotlight not doing so well with .pdfs

I scan a lot of documents that come across my desk, using Acrobat Pro 8.1. But I'm finding that Spotlight isn't doing a very good job of recognizing text within those documents. I'll enter a search string from that document and it won't show up in Spotlight.
Is there some trick I need to know to creating PDFs that Spotlight can index?
Or is there a better way?

I've been using Adobe Acrobat and selecting OCR as part of the scan process. Sometimes it produces PDFs that Spotlight finds, and sometimes it doesn't.
In experimenting, I'm finding the most accurate and reliable OCR process is to use the software that came with my scanner (HP Device Manager) to make the scan, and then use ReadIris to perform the OCR. It adds a few steps, and takes a lot more time, but it does seem to work better.
This is about the ONLY area in which I miss my PC. The Windows application PaperPort did this sort of thing brilliantly, efficiently, quickly. Wish someone would make something like that for Macs.

  • Preview is not rendering fonts well in PDFs

    Hi,
    For some reason Preview is not rendering fonts well in PDFs.  I have created high quality PDFs using two applications (Illustrator CS5 and Numbers '09) and in both cases the fonts are not rendering correctly in Preview.  They generally look much less sharp.  I am attaching screenshots below, with the original image first and then the PDF in Preview.
    When I look at the same PDFs in Acrobat Pro the fonts look fine, so I am presuming that the issue is with Preview.  Does anyone have any idea what might be going on?
    Thanks,
    Nick

    It looks like, at least in the Navigation menu, that your using Palatino font, which isn't a web safe font. So Explorer is probably substituting another font when it finds fonts not installed on the viewers computer.
    You may be using the default font in a particular iWeb theme. These aren't necessarily web safe fonts.
    For your pages to look better on most computers, change all your fonts to web safe fonts which you can find in the "font inspector window" in iWeb. (there is a "font" button on the bottom edge of the main iWeb window) There, you will find different categories of fonts, you want to use any of the fonts listed under "Web" group of fonts.

  • Spotlight Not Working on Xserve with Large Storage

    We're using Xserve (Mac OS X Server 10.6.7) with ~6TB storage as our AFP fileserver. The spotlight searching is not working well, neither at the server console nor client side.
    I have tried rebuid the spotlight index with the following commands,
    sudo mdutil -i on /
    rm -rf /.Spotlight*
    sudo mdutil -E /
    The spotlight engine seems working. But we can't find things accuractly. It seems that we can find things in the past but not the ones recently added to the server. We have clients from 10.4.11 to 10.6.7, and there is no luck for all.
    Does spotlight has storage size limit?
    Thank you!

    Same fundemental issue here. Config a little diff: Serve 10.5.8 with 5 shares from a mirrored RAID. mix of 10.4.11 and 10.5.8 desks. Of all the shares the find problem exists on ONLY ONE SHARE.
    One 10.4.11 system can execute find successfully, while all 10.5.8 and one 10.4.11 do not. Some days all systems return results successfully.
    Weird observation 1: CONSOLE sometimes does not display contents of unsearchable volume even though user (admin) has RWE to that share.
    Shell into 10.5.8 toggle mdutil against the problematic mounted volume does not resolve the problem. Add/removing volume via Spotlight security does not resolve the problem. Tried rm .Spotlight-V100 from workstation command line does not resolve the problem. Tried rm .Spotlight-V100 from console command line does not resolve the problem.
    Weird observation 2: All users same group with RWE set and custom ACL. Privs have been propagated recursively. Correct user and group have ownership to .Spotlight so it's not an issue of write failure while indexing.
    An identifiable pattern of failure remains elusive.

  • How to resolve Content not allowed in prolog with PDF files

    We are using PI 7.1 to read a file and using ASMA get the file name and pass it to a target mapping and call a web service with the file name.
    We have a scenario that reads a PDF file as Binary form a folder.  Our mapper uses ASMA to get the file name and folder of the
    file to map to the target.
    Testing in mapper works fine except for the ASMA does not function (known issue).
    At runtime we drop a file and it is picked up as expected BUT from SXMB_MONI we see the following:
    Runtime exception occurred during application mapping com/sap/xi/tf/_MM_FileNotification_; com.sap.aii.utilxi.misc.api.BaseRuntimeException:Content is not allowed in prolog.
    This error does not happen all the time either.  When it appears it is typically only the first time a file is mapped and on subsequent retries it processes normally.  In dev we have shown that PI seems to get stuck on a few initial files u2013 process properly on the first retry and then at some point has no issues and will process files very fast.
    u201CContent not allowed in prologu201D at least from an XML perspective is related to characters appearing before the xml file declaration:
    <?xml version="1.0".encoding="UTF-8"?>
    If chars appear before this you get this error in Java parsers.  This could be related but we do not have control over how PI parsed the file content and puts into XML messages inside the mapper as we do nothing with the file content.
    The same file will go through randomly with this exception on multiple drops.  Sometimes it gets processed properly and sometime it doesnu2019t u2013 but in dev it u201Calwaysu201D gets processed properly on the automatic retry.  It does not seem to matter what PDF we drop in there either.
    Our tyoes look something like this:
    Source:
    DT_FILE - xsd:hexBinary
    Target:
    FilePath - xsd:String
    I have tried with DT_FILE as xsd:base64Binary with the same results...
    We use a UDF to get the file name from ASMA as follows:
    DynamicConfiguration conf = (DynamicConfiguration) container.getTransformationParameters().get(StreamTransformationConstants.DYNAMIC_CONFIGURATION);
    DynamicConfigurationKey key1 = DynamicConfigurationKey.create("http://sap.com/xi/XI/System/File","FileName");
    DynamicConfigurationKey key2 = DynamicConfigurationKey.create("http://sap.com/xi/XI/System/File","Directory");
    String ourSourceFileName = conf.get(key1);
    String ourSourceDirName = conf.get(key2);
    //conf.put(key1, ourSourceDirName + "/" + ourSourceFileName);
    return ourSourceDirName + "
    ToProcess
    " + ourSourceFileName;

    The questio is. What do you want to do with this information?
    Here is a sample code written for a specific purpose, you can adapt this to your needs:

  • What does Firefox do with .pdf files?

    Our department has started using "the cloud". In our office, we create drawings and maps in Microstation which are also made into .pdf files. It is the .pdf files that we share with clients. I was viewing a .pdf file we created recently and it was listed as a Firefox HTML document. Questions: Is Firefox actually changing our files? What if we sometimes need to have them behave exactly as an Adobe file is expected to behave? What if we need to download a .pdf file and put it on a CD to hand to someone? Will the client be coming back to us saying "What is this thing, I can't use it?" Can we expect these files to plot exactly as a .pdf would plot, and what would we need to do differently?
    Is there something printed up, or a document online, that would explain these things and tell us what normally happens, so that my supervisor (who has barely had a chance to look while this upgrade is happening) would understand it?
    btw I am NOT writing from work.
    thanks in advance

    This was helpful in that it gives me a partial answer but now it adds other questions. I think part of the reply may have been cut off?
    What does it mean, registers as handler? We have people using any of 3 default browsers in my department. Some IE, some Firefox, possibly some Chrome (which was included in upgrade installation but I get the impression that people may not like or trust it.) What if some of the files have been opened with one browser, some with another? Also I do not have admin privileges on my work computer so probably can not change the adobe settings for my own computer, let alone the department. I see a potential mess.
    Where do I learn about this and how do I find some resources I can share?

  • Snow Leopard and Airport...not doing so well altogether.

    I upgraded from 10.5.6 or whatever it was in June when I left...when I came back my internet was dropping a little bit here and there...and when I upgraded to Snow Leopard and the install and reboot was all over, Airport dropped my internet so quickly. Rebooted my computer, reinstalled snow leopard, turned off airport, changed the IP, I believe I did everything I could to do get the internet to work.
    Right now is weird because this is one of the times where it dropped, maintained, dropped and maintained again. As Im speaking it just dropped...and came back up. Im so sick of this. My sister doesnt have the same problem at all. ****! She can get on to the cisco clean access agent, and snow leopard isnt compatabile with that yet so I cant get on to the internet at school. I dont care about the internet at school..I need the internet at home more than at school.
    So in short, can you guys tell me what steps to do that will get my internet to drop less..to mainly be like my sisters where she isnt ******** about it 24/7. She does NOT have Snow Leopard but 10.5.6 OSX or whatever it is now. A key note is that I dont have my OSX install cd's from the original 10.5.2 when I got my MBP, and I didnt set up time machine before I redid it. So Im stuck with this new OS. And you might say its the router or whatever but I swear to god its not, its my computer. I just need to know what I can do that can get my internet so it doesnt drop!!! Thanks guys!

    I have a Mini and am experiencing the same. Started with wireless dropping every 20 minutes or so. Then it couldn't find signal so I moved my Time Capsule closer. I'm watching my transmit rate drop every few minutes from 58, then 24, then 18, then 12, now 1. The icon in the status menu doesn't change though. According to that icon I'm getting 4 full bars of signal. If I Option+right click then I see that I'm only at 1

  • I-Sight not workng so well with 10.5  ????

    Hi, I have a macbook pro that was just recently upgraded from 10.4-10.5 (10.5.2 now). The only problem i'm recieving so far is with photobooth. Whenever I snap a picture and preview the picture below and then get back to try to snap another, the isight shows everything in a dark mode as if someone turned off the lights? Forcing me to quit it and restart. Also, When i use the new effects such as the background add on, when i step out and step back in I look really distorted. Photo booth was just fine in Tiger, this happened once I installed leopard. Any help would be appreciated, Thanks.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions, Dinos22
    Unless you used the following method to update your Mac OS to 10.5.2, try the following:
    • Backup your Home Folder, or at very least, your important files.
    • Repair permissions. (Click here if you need help.)
    • Then download and apply the Mac OS X 10.5.2 Combo Update.
    • Finish with another Permissions Repair, and then check your iSight again.
    Users have reported fixes to a variety of audio, video, connectivity, and software conflicts and unreliability issues after properly applying Combo Updates.
    If the Combo Update does not correct your problem, try the suggestions in Apple's How to Troubleshoot iSight.
    If your only problem is that Photo Booth will not work correctly in any user account that you test, you can try reinstalling Photo Booth from your Leopard Upgrade DVD using its instructions for reinstalling applications only in the Upgrade documentation. Alternatively, you can use Pacifist to extract ONLY Photo Booth from your Leopard Upgrade DVD. See the Pacifist online Documentation for info and instructions on how to use Pacifist. After you have completed the install, use your Mac's  > Software Update... menu command to check for updates.
    If none of the advice you get here helps you correct your problem, contact Apple or an Apple-Authorized Service Provider for professional help.

  • IPhone not doing so well.

    Hi. My iPhone 4 is working a little strangely. It's slow to respond to my commands and it sometimes quits applications unexpectedly. Anyone know what I can do to help it?

    I'd try connecting to iTunes and doing a restore.
    When you connect it to your Mac/PC iTunes will back it up - so you can restore to factory settings and then once it goes through that process you can then restore it to as it was with all your content.
    I hope this helps..
    Let me know if you have any success.

  • Adobe reader not doing anything when opening PDFs

    Hi, I have a client who's currently having trouble with their Adobe reader. They have many issues however I suspect they all lead back to the same issue and sorting one should sort them all. The first issue was that when double clicking/right click opening PDFs, nothing would happen no matter what method you used. When I checked the processes in task manager though, it turns out they were opening it's just that they weren't actually visible and I had no way to access them. This has also carried over to other software that this client uses and they can't see PDFs in them even though they actually are open. It's quite tough to explain but I was hoping someone could lend a hand with this, thanks!

    Hi Adam.Sedgwick,
    What other applications is your client using to view PDFs? As far as Reader goes, it sounds like a reinstall may be in order. What version of Reader is your client using, and what operating system? If he or she hasn't already upgraded to Acrobat Reader DC, I would start there. Remove whatever version is currently installed, and then install the latest version from this page: Adobe Acrobat Reader DC Install for all versions.
    Please let us know how it goes.
    Best,
    Sara

  • Epson R800 does work well with Snow Leopard

    Three machines.
    MacPro and MacBook Pro worked from get-go after installation of new Epson drivers (check Epson site for new drivers) with Epson R800 and R1800 on firewire.
    Old Intel iMac did not work until I disconnected firewire and tried USB. Then all became sweetness and light. Thanks to a suggestion in this forum.

    Some of the previous users had success when they restarted after deleting the /Library/Printers/EPSON and /Library/Caches/Epson folders. You might also try deleting the /Library/Cache folder. There is a solution posted from someone at Epson:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10909012#10909012
    Substitute 2880 for RX580:
    Make sure that you have completely removed the Stylus Photo RX580 driver, then install the new driver from System Update:
    1. Power off the printer
    2. Open System Pref. and Print/Fax
    3. Highlight the RX580 printer
    4. Click on the ""-"" sign
    5. Close Print and Fax
    6. Open your Mac's Hard Drive
    7. Open the Library Folder
    8. Open Printer and delete the EPSON Folder
    9. Open the PPDs folder find the Epson Stylus Photo RX580.gz and delete the file
    10. Close the PPD and the Printer folder
    ->11. In the Library folder, open the Caches Folder
    ->12. Delete the Epson folder
    ->13. Restart the Mac
    14. Power on the printer
    15. Click on the Apple Icon and System Update
    16. Follow the directions to install the new driver
    Hope this helps.

  • AirPort is NOT doing so well.

    Howdy.
    So yesterday, one of the networks I was using to connect to the internet just stopped working. I had no idea why so asked my roommates which networks they were using (their rooms are on either side of mine) and I saw that there computers were connecting to the internet fine.
    At first I tried just sharing their internet to my computer via bluetooth, which worked about 5 minutes before zip zero. Now the bluetooth on my roommate's computer won't even turn on (I click Turn Bluetooth On in the menu bar and nothing happens) and in general, the whole bluetooth sharing thing isn't happening.
    But what's worse/more odd is that I have brough my roommate's MacBook Pro into my room next to my immobile Mac Pro desktop, and she's not only getting a pretty decent signal for the network she's been using, but about 9 other networks are popping up, from neighbors I suppose.
    My Mac Pro isn't detecting any of that, and they're right next to each other right now.
    Any help? Is it actually possible that my AirPort Card (which was preinstalled when I ordered the desktop) is screwed up? It's not like I've been taking the computer to gymnastics lessons or anything like that.
    Please help.

    Take it in for service.

  • Problem with PDF Actions in SAP MII 12.2

    I'm trying to generate PDF documentation work in 12.2 version of MII. Below are the steps followed as per note 1325997
    I've downloaded the PDF Actions files:
    Downloaded the iText.jar and iTextAsian.jar files.
    Custom action updated with PDFActions.jar as the assembly .jar file, and iText.jar and iTextAsian.jar as the dependency .jar files and Deployed the custom action.
    Workbench does show up with PDF action blocks like PDF Document, PDF Table...etc but seems to be an issue as these do not look like the standard actions with no icons attached to them.
    I've tried to create a new transaction and include any actions to the sequence, but no luck as it doesn't assigns the PDF action
    i've downloaded iText.Jar and iTeaxtAsian.jar files from iTEXT website. please inform if exact version i-e 1.4.5 files
    are available on SAP downloads (if any).
    Is anything missing..?
    Appreciate any efforts.....

  • Extreme w/static IP doesn't work well with iPhone

    At our school I've installed a new Extreme Base Station, but we're having trouble with a couple of iPhones not automatically picking it up. Sometimes using the web browser or email makes it connect, but not always.
    Our school district requires that the Base Station have a static IP address, and it's just bridging our wired network, not doing DHCP. With my older Airport at home the iPhone picks it up even before I can get out of my car in the garage - but it's not a static IP and there is another router on my network doing DHCP.
    Does the static IP and no DHCP make the Airport connection not as automatic at school? I got this because one of our principals and I both have iPhones - and he's not real happy so far with it.
    Any ideas welcome.

    If your base station has a static IP address, what about any computers that are connecting to it? If there are any such, what are they using for IP addresses?
    Everything in the entire school district (80+ schools, 50,000+ students) has a static IP.
    Do you know why your school district has that policy? Would they be willing to allocate a set of IP addresses to your base station, so that you could configure it to "Distribute a range of IP addresses"?
    I think they perceive the static IP approach to be more secure. No, we're not allowed to do any DHCP anywhere in the entire district - I've asked
    It seems to be working fairly well now, it's just odd. If I stand near the base station with my iPhone:
    -sometimes it automatically switches to the wifi icon
    -sometimes it doesn't, but then does when you use Mail or Safari
    -sometimes it uses 3G instead of wifi at first
    It's like it takes 30-90 seconds for the iPhone to really recognize and use the wifi. I have never seen that before and the only difference is that this base station and the iPhone are static IPs and no DHCP.

  • Time Machine does not cope well with nearly-full disk

    Although Time Machine is supposed to delete old backups when the disk fills up, under some circumstances it does not cope well with a disk-full condition.
    Hardware: iMac (mid 2007)
    OS: Mac OS X version 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard)
    Processor: 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory: 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
    The other day I noticed that I had not had a successful Time Machine backup in over a day. Backups were taking a long time to run (4 hours or more), during which time the backup disk was chattering constantly and the disk showed "Estimating index time" in the Spotlight menu (even though I had excluded the disk from Spotlight indexing). When the disk finally stopped chattering, the backup finished with no visible errors but Time Machine continued to state that the last successful backup was yesterday. The backup disk was nearly full, but I had assumed that Time Machine was designed to cope with this situation by deleting old backups.
    A complete annotated log file of the incident and my observations can be found here: http://bentopress.com/backup.log.zip
    Here are some of the interesting entries from the system.log file:

    Sep  7 16:26:15 Bento-iMac com.apple.backupd[56515]: Backup canceled.
    Note the "error: 0". Error code zero normally indicates success.
    There were also many, many, many copies of the following message, which occurred while Spotlight was trying to index the backup disk:
    Sep  7 17:28:40 Bento-iMac com.apple.backupd[58064]: Waiting for index to be ready (100)
    Here's what I think is happening: at the very end of the backup, after the files have been copied to the backup disk, mds resets indexing because the disk is now full. backupd's attempt to flush the index to disk then fails because indexing is suspended (error zero), so the backup is canceled. I suspect that this may occur when the new backup and the old one(s) being deleted are both small enough that the disk "packs" tightly, leaving no room for the index. If a large (>500MB) old backup had been deleted to make room for a small (<100MB) new one, the problem would not have occurred.
    I worked around the problem by switching Time Machine from the full disk to my Time Capsule. (I did not have this system backing up to the Time Capsule originally because I purchased the Time Capsule later for a different system.) The downside of this is that I lost access to older backups (though they are still accessible by right-clicking on Time Machine in the dock and selecting "Browse other Time Machine disks..."—however, I have not actually tried this). I'm also not completely happy having both my main systems backing up to the same hardware, but everything seems to be working well at this point and I do have a secondary backup system, using SuperDuper to clone the systems' disks to an external HD, which I do about once a month.
    Although I have worked around the problem, I am posting this in the hope that it will be useful to someone else, in the hope that someone at Apple will notice and perhaps improve the performance of Time Machine in this situation, and also in the hope that someone can suggest a solution that does not involve throwing a bigger disk at the problem. Is there any way to free up space on Time Machine's backup disk, for example by manually pruning older backups, either through Time Machine itself or via the Finder or command line?

    If you suspect that the disk being full is the problem, have you tried deleting some of the old backup data on the TM disk?
    When in TM, go back to the past a long way, right click on a file/directory and select "delete backup". Do this on some big files you have (so that you get more space per removal) that you change all the time (so you'll still have recent backups).
