Spotlight? Not even a glimmer in 10.4.7

Spotlight has disappeared. The icon is still there on the menu bar, but nothing happens on clicking it. I have removed/replaced the Prefs with no result. This may have happened when I downloaded/installed (using Software Update) OSX10.4.7, but I can't be certain.
I am currently using the traditional Command-f in Finder, which does a very good job, but isn't quite as convenient.
Does anyone out there have an answer?......... James

More often than not, when the menu bar Spotlight won't work there is a conflict between Spotlight, SystemUIServer and some menu extra (including some of Apple's own). Personally my menu bar Spotlight won't work if I have the Classic item in the menu bar, and open it. Blam. No more Spotlight. Others have had a problem with the Bluetooth menu extra, many with third party items, such as the StuffIt Deluxe menulet. You could try removing all menu bar extras (including Apple's own) so they don't load on start. Startup with a completely bare right side of the menu bar, nothing but Spotlight up there, and see if it works. If it does then that is indeed the problem. Add your usual things one at a time, run for awhile, add another, and so on, and see if you can figure out which one is causing the problem.

PS: If that doesn't work either, then I have even one more suggestion . "Open the Spotlight preference pane. Click on the Privacy tab, and then drag your hard drive to the list of locations you don’t want Spotlight to search. Wait a few seconds; then select the drive and click on the minus-sign (–) button. By adding the drive to this list, you force Spotlight to erase the index; when you remove it from the list, Spotlight notes that the drive is again available for indexing and starts chugging away at that task." Spotlight not finding files on Mountain Lion

My Spotlight and Finder searches don't find most files/folders/applications on ML 10.8. The files are there if I browse to them manually, and I'm hoping I can fix this without a clean install.
Some things I have tried:
I've dragged the entire HDD to the Spotlight Privacy tab and removed it (to re-index).
I've checked Spotlight Preferences and everything is checked under Search Results.
Any ideas? Thanks for any suggestions.

Tried deleting the preferences file (from ~/Library/Preferences). Nothing I did after that recreated the file including going and changing the settings (e.g. adding a directory to exlude and saving via Spotlight preferences pane), which is a bit odd.
Regardless, after that, I redid the recreation steps (i.e. adding / removing mac HD via spotlight prefs, the 3 mdutil commands above etc) and still nothing. AFAICT, there is basically no indexing or no search going on in spotligh, I think this because when I try to search via spotlight, it does nothing (i.e. not even the usual spinning wheel) and immediately returns no results, so either it is not searching or is searching an empty/tiny index I think.
Unless you have other ideas, I am going to do some jiggling (e.g. restart), maybe wait for an OS update or two and if nothing else, try reverting to an earlier time machine backup (would much rather not do this last). Any other ideas appreciated.

Another spotlight not working at all

I have tried all suggestions from the other post about spotlight not working at all but archive and install. Is there any other way to fix it besides that? What are other people doing to fix theirs?

I have just fixed the same problem on my Powermac, i was not even getting a spinning wheel when trying to search. It is a bit more involved than an archive and install but much quicker, i wouldn't recomend it if you're not familiar with the contents of install packages a little bit. here's the steps:
1. Download and open Pacifist from macupdate.com and after the countdown click not yet and open the install packages from your OSX DVD (there is a specific button for this function).
2. Use the find tool to search for all spotlight files (just search for spotlight)
3. The list of files includes all references to spotlight found on the install dvd including language packs and applications so only the top 22 item are needed. These are the files in the Base system and essensials packages. although if you just did a full install then there is no real harm in doing the language variations etc too..
4. Select the files that you want to install from the search drawer and click the install button. You will need an admin password to complete this.
5. I didn't need to restart but you may want to delete the preferences file at ~/library/preferences/c.apple.spotlight.plist, and repair the permissions before restarting anyway.
Do be careful that your not writing over updated versions of mail or other applicaions that are in the packages, i would advise having a good look through the search results and only installing those components in the base system and essensials, these were the top 22 on my DVD.
Obviously this is at your own risk but it worked perfectly for me. Good luck

IOS 8.1.1 Spotlight not working (temporary work around)

Spotlight for me is an important way to get to contacts and applications on my iPhone and iPad. With the latest iOS 8.1.1 release, the spotlight feature on my iPhone stopped working completely and the only way to get it to work was rebooting the phone. Even after that it only worked for half an hour (tops)!! My iPad on the other hand had no issues at all.
After going through a lot of forums, I limited my spotlight search to contacts and applications and reboote my phone. The problem seems to have gone away and I can finally work my phone with ease.
Give this a try until Apple get their act together and roll out iOS 8.1.2.
P.S - Restarting your iPhone or your iPad is NECESSARY after you've limited your options in the spotlight menu.
P.S.S - I'm not sure if this will work for those with the same issue on their iPads but it's worth a try

Same issue, Spotlight not working as it did, on my iPhone 5S and iPad 3 after 8.1.1. Very frustrating, I'm beginning to think I should do as a Windows user and avoid updates because Apple's QA has really become terrible. Every release is full of bugs, way more so than in the past. I used to look forward to updates, not any more. Wow, sad. I've done a restore but the problem comes back, Apple needs to fix this issue and maybe take some of it's billions and invest back in quality. Please.

Spotlight not working

For some reason, all my apple utilities and programs are not searchable in spotlight and finder. For example, if I type iphoto, iMovie, or even activity monitor. Those programs wont show up. However, if I search for any other program such as microsoft word, they show up immediately.
I checked spotlight's settings, applications are selected.
How an I fix this.

I didn't read through the post fully, but for anyone who has a problem with spotlight not working, try this:
Open Terminal.
Type: su –
Press Enter.
(This will bring you to a line asking for your password.)
Type your password and press enter.
(This will bring you to the root directory of your hard drive.)
Type: mdiutil -i on /
Press Enter.
(This will bring you to a line saying "Indexing Enabled".
This should fix the problem and spotlight should immediately begin reindexing your hard drive's contents so they will now be searchable. Everything should look like the following. It worked for me without any issues.

When I try to zoom the text of an e-mail I received or sent , I can no longer use the keys Command + to enlarge the text, although I can reduce it with Command -.
As I have a problem with my eyes, This is a serious matter for me.
When I write an e-mail, if I select text and press Command +, it just displaces the text to the right.
Now, my husband has a USB keyboard. If he connects it to my computer, his regular Command + does not work either, but he uses the extended keyboard, then it works. Unfortunately, he needs it for a musical application which does not work with a wireless keyboard.

Firefox 3.6.4 and 3.6.6 use a process called, "plugin-container.exe" which was using up most of my CPU when I opened up multiple tabs that contained Adobe Flash files, and caused Firefox to lock up.
My solution was to use Firefox 3.5.10 which you can get from the Mozilla website at [http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html]
I am using Adobe Flash 10.1.53.64 without any problem in this version of Firefox. Check the release notes, I believe it contains all the latest security fixes in "Firefox 3.6.4".
Hopefully, they will fix Firefox 3.6 in the next version (e.g. Firefox 3.6.7), until then you should probably use "Firefox 3.5.10".

Creative Cloud desktop app totally empty - not even Preferences...?

I have from before Production Premium CS6 and Lightroom 4 installed on my computer (Windows 7 64-bit, 16GB RAM).
I joined then CC Photography Package and after login to my account I went to the DL section to download one of the programs and install it. The Creative cloud desktop app is installed, but it is empty. Not only is there neither a Photoshop CC nor a Lightroom 5 there, there's no menu and if I try to determine the app version as in http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/kb/creative-cloud-desktop-missing-text.html - there's not even a Preferences to select...
I get no error message, and going to the Download center and trying to download Photosgop or Lightroom just gets me a blink of "waiting for creative.adobe.com..." and then focus is changed to the empty Creative Cloud desktop app.
Checking my account I can see that both my product licences for CS6/LR4 are there, as is my CC Photography package.
I can add that I have restarted the system, reinstalled the Creative Cloud app and tried other things I can think of. But I still only get an empty Creative Cloud app, without a possibility to login to my Adobe account.

Have you tried deleting the songs from Settings?
Settings -> General -> Usage -> Manage Storage (not the iCloud link!) -> Music and then click Edit to enable you to be able to delete.

It may be the best source of assistance is the manufacturer of the device. I suspect you will need a specific app for the iPhone to get it to work, but the site is rather ambiguous about that.

Is the address on your iTunes account exactly the same (format and spacing etc) as on your credit card bill : http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1646 ? If it is then you could try what it says at the bottom of that page :
If the issue persists, contact your credit card company and verify that they and any company they use to process credit card authorisations have the correct information on file.
And/or try contacting iTunes support : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page

I am so frustrated about Adobe Flash player. I can not play any Facebook games, open certain files and pictures and documents that I need to access because not only does this phone not do it but my old Palm Pre couldn't do it either. I have had so many times where I needed to access things either online or via email, or message that I can not even look at because of this. I have to wait until I for home or ask someone else to do it for me which is embarrassing. I rave about my iPhone 4S all the time because it is truly great except for this. When it use to happen with my Pal Pre I figures once I got my iPhone that it wouldn't happen anymore but I guess I was completely wrong. I have had this problem for years and always get a message saying that it's being worked on. Well a couple of years is a long time to work on it. I understand about contracts and stuff but why is it taking a company such as Apple to be able to get it for their products? I get a lot and always want to play the games on Facebook but I can't do it on most of them at least the ones I have tried. So I can not play against anyone at that time I have to wait until I get home or use someone else's computer or something. Please tell me that in the extremely near future that this will not be a problem anymore. PLEASE!! I am sure I am not the only one out there who is having issues and if you do get it available please let there be an upload/upgrade for current phones and not just for future versions of Apple phones. That just wouldnt be very fair to all of your loyal customers and tell everyone to get your products because they are great and end up leaving this little problem out until they by your phone. Especially if they just got the phone they have. You guys are awesome with technology I have faith that you can make this available to all Apple products old and new by uploads or upgrades. I have a 1tb hard drive that is mostly empty. By the way I just got this imac used from a reseller.

Mavericks downloads into the Applications folder, where you can install it. Some Mac App Store Troubleshooting information and how to resume a download that was interrupted; some of the information here might get you an answer. Failing that, try contacting Apple Support.
