Spotlight not indexing. Stopped at 2% for days.

Greetings,
Spotlight is not working. It has been stopped at 2% with 13 hours remaining for days. Not getting any search results. Help.
Thanks

System Preferences->Spotlight->Privacy->drag your boot volume into the pane or use the plus sign, select it, and click the minus sign. That should restart indexing and fix your issue. See http://www.pinkmutant.com/articles/Leopard/leospot.html and http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/stopspotlightindex.html for more details.

  • Time Machine is "Stopping back-up" for days, what do I do?

    Hello,
I have a Mac OS X Version 10.6.8, 4gb Mac book pro, and I'm trying to make the first back-up for days. I have a Wi-fi Router D-Link DIR 615 in my living room and I wanted to use the time capsule to expand the signal so it could reach my bed-room. But first I've been trying to make the back up without success.
I have a Ethernet cabe conected between my computer and the time capsule, and I have a usb cabe conecting the time capsule and the printer. Since I wanted the back-up to be done wirelessly, I didn't connect the modem cabe to the time machine, because it is already connected to the Router.
The problem right now with Time Machine is because it is stuck "stopping back-up" for days. I've turned time machine OFF, and it is still stuck, and I've turned Time Capsule OFF, and rebooted it, but it is still stuck "stopping back up."
I saw in onother conversation talking about SYSLOGED, and how I'm supposed to "open terminal" and write some stuff there:
    http://www.macworld.com/article/1146737/exittimemachine.html
Is this link saying the right answer to my problem? And how do I "Open Terminal"?
    Tks a lot!

  • Spotlight not Indexing (or showing any results)

Spotlight isn't working at all for me in Leopard. I had just done a format and clean install of Leopard, all apps and fully updated OS and apps patches. It's been 2 days now so I'd expect Spotlight would have indexed everything. However Spotlight returns no results for anything typed in the search box. Nothing.
Could the following be related? When I open Spotlight preferences>privacy and try to add ANY of my drives to the prevent list, it returns this error for all drives: "Privacy List Error. the item couldn't be added or removed because of an unknown error."

I fixed it and want to post what worked for anyone else with this problem. Spotlight would not return ANY result after the clean Leopard install. I cleaned out ALL the caches with the program Cocktail Leopard edition. That did the trick. Instantly Spotlight began indexing my drives. While I've used Cocktail for years I also found a program called "MainMenu" which has an actual button for "Re-index Spotlight". I didn't need it because Cocktail worked. But should cocktail not work for you I would try MainMenu next.

  • IPhoto/Spotlight not indexing SOLUTION

For those iPhoto 6 users whoose comments and keywords not being indexed by Spotlight, here is the solution to your problem!
If you are getting * Parsing file: '~/Pictures/iPhoto Library/AlbumData.xml'
ERROR: syntax error (<key>PhotoCount</key>) when you try to manually index your iPhoto library with mdimport, this will solve your problem!
You can only have single-line comments on your photos:
    - Create a smart album: "Comments... contains... [option][return]"
Note: press option+return with your keyboard... the box will appear blank
    - The smart album should become populated with photos where you entered a comment containing a character return
    - Click the ( i ) in the bottom left-hand corner to draw up the info for each file, and manually remove the character break until your smart alum is empty OR go to Photos -> Batch Change and enter a new comment. Make sure that "append" is UNCHECKED -- This will overwrite all of the comments.
Now, you must also make sure you only have single-line comments on your rolls:
    - From the iPhoto Library, go to View -> Sort Photos -> By Film Roll
    - Hold the Apple (command) key, and click the drop down triangle once or twice (until all are collapsed)
    - Manually examine each roll and make sure that the comments (if any) are all on one line.
Note: If the comments are all on one line, the whole line will be visible in the collapsed view under the Film Roll name
    Quit iPhoto
Open Terminal (in the Utilities folder)
    - Type mdimport -f ~/Pictures and hit return
    - After some time, a message should come up saying:
    * Parsing file: '~/Pictures/iPhoto Library/AlbumData.xml'
As long as there is not an error message underneath, this is good!
    - When the command has finished running and you're at a blank prompt again, quit Terminal
    Open iPhoto
    - Click iPhoto in the menu bar, and go to Preferences
    - Click the Keywords tab
    - Click the "+" and create a new keyword called Spotlight
    - Close out of iPhoto preferences
    - From the iPhoto Library, select all of the photos (Edit -> Select All)
    - Get info on the files (Photos -> Get Info)
    - Select the Keywords tab
    - CHECK the box that says [Spotlight] *THIS MIGHT TAKE A WHILE
    - UNCHECK the box that says [Spotlight] * THIS MIGHT TAKE A WHILE
Note: This forces all of the pictures to be updated in the database
    - Quit iPhoto
Search for your comments and keywords with Spotlight

Can I ask, does this need to be done every time you add photos to iPhoto, or is this a one-off trick to get Spotlight to look at iPhoto keywords in the first place?
My first experience with iPhoto is iPhoto6 so I don't have any baggage that I am bringing from earlier copies of iPhoto. I've imported in 1500 photos and am working my way through tagging them with keywords and am hoping that spotlight will index them. Is this bug related to keywords applied in older versions of iPhoto, or does the issue manifest itself even on a brand new library? Are Apple looking to patch iPhoto / Spotlight to resolve this?
    Thanks.

Also, running mdimport -r "/System/Library/Spotlight/iPhoto.mdimporter" in Terminal does not return any results (or any errors).
I have checked my library for any comments/descriptions with any line breaks in them and can not find any. I have deleted and rebuilt the spotlight indexes. I have added Pictures to the privacy section of spotlight then put it back. I have insured that iPhoto.mdimporter is the version off the the Leopard installation disc. I have checked that iPhoto.ipspot contains the correct path to AlbumData.xml.
Any help or ideas on how to troubleshoot would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,

  • Spotlight not indexing after hard drive replaced

    Hi all
Just wondering if anyone knows how to encourage Spotlight to re-index? Just had my hard drive replaced as part of the recall, and now Spotlight wont index anything.
I've tried previous suggestions (adding and removing hard drive to privacy list, commands through terminal etc), but it's still not working.  All the software is up to date (10.7.5).
Any ideas?  It's incredibly annoying, and making working on this computer virtually impossible at the moment.
    Cheers

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Enter "mdworker" (without the quotes) in the Filter text field. Post the most recent 50 or so messages that appear in the Console window — the text, please, not a screenshot.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into a message.
Some personal information, such as the names of your files, may be included — edit that out, too, but don’t remove the context.
    Step 2
Do the same with the search string "mds".

  • SPOTLIGHT NOT INDEXING 10.7.5 ! TIME MACHINE SLOW !

    Help,
Spotlight is not indexing after 10.7.5. update, please fisx this, it is unacceptable.
    Reinstalled fresh, same result !
The problem persists on 2 MB and 1 iMac !
    Cmon, Guys ! :-(

Same thing here on 3 iMacs: late 2009, mid 2010 and mid 2012. Each one froze while backing up. Started to back up shortly after upgrading to 10.7.5 then froze. I removed drive and tried with another computer --- same thing happened. After the first computer failed, I went on and repeated the process with other 2 all with the same results. Called AppleCare to let them know about problem. They said the engineers were aware of the problem. When I asked if the tech had any personal experience, he said yes with his computer. I asked how he fixed his and he said he didn't yet. So I too encourage anyone with the problem to take the time to call Apple so they understand the magnitude of this problem. I spent a total of 5 or 6 hours messing with this and finally unplugged the backup drive and will resort to drag and drop my documents folder a couple of times a week on my portable drive until they figure it out.

  • Spotlight NOT indexing root of share point

Wondering if anyone else has ever encountered this issue...
I have a 10.4.9 server install on a G5 Xserve, which has recently stopped allowing any successful searches against the root of the 3 configured share points. It will search properly if you drill down even one level, although that clearly restricts the functionality of being able to perform finds!
The share points are 3 folders located in a second ADM module.
I've walked through variants on the suggestions included in the following thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1242226
With the addition of specifically grep/rm'ing all .Spotlight-V100 folders in place of mdutil -E /Volumes/Name; I've also done the procedure both on the server as root and as client via the above instructions.
I've also created new share points from new folders, which exhibit the exact same issue... so I doubt that it's with any sort of config on the share points themselves.
Is it possible that the volume index for the second drive is being kept in a "primary" .Spotlight-V100 folder, say on the boot volume? I'm banging my head now!
Any help or insight would be much appreciated.
    Regards,
    Brendon

Exact same problem with me. I'm still not getting any decent replies from anyone here on the discussions. I've been trying to work with one person who responded to my original post, we've been going through various procedures to try to pinpoint the problem, but so far, no luck. I figured I'd post here as well because MAYBE someone has found a solution for this. It seems you're not the only one with this problem.
Does anyone know if there's a singular file where Spotlight stores its index data, and can it be located, tossed in the trash, and be automatically rebuilt? It seems that every time that I try to force a re-index (by turning the Spotlght Privacy settings on and off for my hard drive), Spotlight fails to re-index (well it seems that way, anyway, because there's no indication of re-indexing taking place in the Spotlight menu item on the top right side of the screen). If there is such a file, I'm wondering if it's somehow corrupt and just refuses to be rebuilt.
    Any ideas anyone?
    Have you tried trashing the
    com.apple.spotlight.plist
from User > Library > Partition and then reindexed with Spotlight?

  • Spotlight not indexing outlook 2011 files

I've found several articles on Outlook 2011 search not working and it pointing to issues with spotlight. I tried all the proposed fixes including the changes listed here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2473212. Nothing seems to be working though these are all geared towards Lion 10.7. Also, in spotlight on 10.8 I don't see a mail messages, I see Mail and Chats but it has a mail.app logo next to it which I'm assuming is looking at a different directory. How can remediate this problem? Not having search functionality is not acceptable. Please help.

    Hi,
Just found a solution to this problem and seems to be working.
    Open System preferences.
    Select Spotlight
    Select Privacy
Open a separate Finder window and select 'Documents'.
    Go find 'Microsoft User data'
    Then find 'Office 2011 Identities'.
Drag 'Office 2011 Identities' to the other window open "Privacy" amongst the spotlight settings.
What this does is tell spotlight to NOT search in outlook, the very opposite to what you want!
However, you then need to highlight the 'Office 2011 Identities' folder and click the - sign which removes it. Your now telling it you want to INCLUDE this folder for when spotlight searches.
By removing adding and removing it, its a bit like the classic IT solution of switch it off and on again. It forces the spotlight to re index everything and therefore including outlook for when searching using spotlight.
Depending on your outlook file size, it could take hours or even days so be patient. If you run a search for something to do with outlook in 'spotlight' you should see its indexing with a blue progress bar. Its working.
Lastly, incase your wondering why this answer involves spotlight and you just wanted a fix for the outlook search and filters, its because outlook for Mac actually uses spotlight behind the scenes.

  • Spotlight not indexing

I have been having trouble with searches on my system. I first noticed this a couple weeks ago, when I could not do content searches in my e-mails (only IMAP-supported searches, not for e-mail contents).
I have loked at mdutil, ran 'mdutil -Ei on /Volumes/Users', verified disk permissions, and I am running under an administrative account.
mdutil -vsa shows that '/' and '/Volumes/Users' have indexing enabled.
But I don't see either spotlight indexing anything, or searches in my e-mails coming online.
    BTW:
I bring the Parallels installation up, because I have noticed some other bothersome system problems since I installed it, roughly two months ago.
Also Dropbox is installed. I noticed that Dropbox installs quite a bit of 'system-altering' software with very little information on what it is doing.
    Any suggestions?

Apparently the mds service was somehow 'clogged'. Soon after I wrote the previous e-mail I ran a:
'kill -HUP' to mds and that seems to have brought searches in the email application back online.
mdutil now shows actual scan times for the enabled volumes (it was not doing that before).
As a side note, the spotlight menu seemed to always be working.
It is a little early to tell, so I'll mark it as resolved when I confirm that things are back to normal.

  • Spotlight NOT Indexing or SHOWING files? Nothing shows IN PRIVATE

Being stupid and doing something without knowing what would happen, I read a tip on battery life to add the HD or folders to PRIVACY to TURN OFF INDEXING.
Well now, nothing happens when I search. Of course, as it was, when I went to PRIVACY, nothing shows up as listed (OMIT) and I have tried adding to privacy, of course, nothing shows up, so I can't add it then delete it - nothing happens when I add something to privacy.
I can not get spotlight to work, I have tried OYNX the mac utility that had a RESET INDEXING and nothing happens.
Please, there must be a way to turn INDEXING back on and or seeing the FILES that are being omitted, (ARE THEY HIDDEN?) - please help, have tried booting to safe and running disc utility but after 10 minutes of watching the DISC UTILITY NEVER FIND THE HARD DRIVE, I got fed up.
Please tell me there is another way (besides disc utility, waited 10+ minutes).
    Thanks

have tried booting to safe and running disc utility but after 10 minutes of watching the DISC UTILITY NEVER FIND THE HARD DRIVE, I got fed up.
Uhm, was this a spinning radian you're talking about? That is trying to repair your HDD.
I booted to external (Target mode, Leopard) ran disk util on macbook pro TIGER HARD DRIVE, it said it was going to take 2 hours to repair.
Opps, you may have real problems now. Forget that, use your Tiger Install Disk to repair your Tiger Mac.
    1. Insert the Mac OS X TIGER Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, *you must select your language first.)*
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.
Then Safe Boot off the HD & use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, reboot once more.
Wondering if the reason the PRIVATE never showed up was due to it not having enough time to display?
Nope, your HDD/OS is messed up.
Man I am so upset about that TIP, they should warn you that its going to do something like that.
That tip is a simple operation & should not cause any problems, you had serious problems before trying that tip, you just hadn't noticed anything other than the not searching apparently.
Will repairing disk permissions work? (albeit 2 hours, from my Leopard Target Mode).
Repair the HDD before Repairing Permissions, and +DO NOT+ do either from a Leopard Disk.

  • Spotlight endlessly indexing and mdworker process using lot of cpu

Hi, I just did Archive&Install from Tiger to Leopard, applied 10.5.1 and now...
...since THREE DAYS Spotlight is indexing giving strange values for time remaining (2.134.545.673 hours).
Like I found in other threads, I have the mdworked process absorbing a lot of cpu power and, from Console, maybe it's crashing repeatedly. I made private of lots of folders but the problem is still there.
    Any other idea?
How can I find which file/application is freezing mdworker and making Spotlight so unuseful?
    Thanks in advance
    Tampano

I don't know. How much data is on your HD? Simplest thing to do is use the Terminal command mdutil to erase the current indexes and rebuild them. This should do it:
    *sudo mdutil -E /Volumes/(asterisk)*
Launch the Terminal.app in /Applications/Utilities/, copy & paste that command into the window, hit the return key, enter your admin password at the Password: prompt (carefully because nothing shows up on the screen), and hit the return key again. That should erase the indexes and rebuild them.

  • TREX does not index documents

Now this one is a bit strange. We have created an index on a file system repository that contains a number of different types of files including plain text, MS-Word, Excel and Acrobat PDFs. The queue now has a red status showing a sizeable number of documents failed the preparation, but a few are ready to be transmitted.
We found that none of the MS-Word, Excel and Acrobat documents passed the preparation stage. Anything that passes preparation is either a directory or a plain text file, though this is not consistent either since a number of files that did not pass preparation where als plain text files.
What gives? Am I missing something here? Any hints would be very much appreciated.

    Hello Wolfgang,
we faced exactly the same problem. To be more precisely, documents with more than 10kb were not indexed. The reason for this is, that doc´s smaller than 10kb are automatically transmitted to TREX by the crawler. For documents bigger than 10kb the crawlers only transmit the URI and then the TREX fetches them by itself.
The URL´s that are sent to TREX are normally built by the URL generator using the host entry. If you have a clustered landscape this might not work, because the Firewall, Load-Balancers, WebServers, or external authentication Systems might cause problems when they are directly called by TREX via the normal portal URL.
In this case you must specify the name of a specific server (e.g. http://server.com:50000) as Alternative Host in the URL Generator Service. But be careful with that setting. A wrong setting might crash your system (happened on our productive layer unfortunately).
If you use SSL for the communication between TREX and portal it even gets more complicated. Fortunately I did not have to deal with that.
Thus, if you have clustered system, be sure that the communication TREX to Portal can take place without problems. Take a look at the trace files of the TREX preprocessor, this should give you a hint on this.
    Hope this helps.
    Kind regards,
    Christopher Höfele

  • Spotlight keeps indexing external set to Privacy

After completing a SuperDuper backup Spotlight started indexing all of its contents ('30 hours remaining...'). To stop this I dragged the backup image into Spotlight's Privacy panel, but to no avail. To stop the indexing I had to do a force unmount of the external drive. Somewhere else I read that as soon as the drive is dragged into the Privacy folder Spotlight's indexing stops. Is this how it is supposed to work?
    Thanks in advance

Well, this time immediately after SuperDuper started doing its backup operations I went to Spotlight's Privacy panel and added the SuperDuper image there, and Spotlight didn't index anything. So I suppose this is the way it should work.
