Spotlight not searching on Bing

Hello,
I just installed Yosemite on my rMBP and i was trying to figure out how to make the spotlight search things for me on the internet via Bing. When they presented the OS, if i remember correctly, they made a search for the keyword "Yosemite" and the spotlight returned a Wikipedia page with infos about "Yosemite". Well, i have everything ticked (including searches on Bing) but if i search for "Yosemite" or anything else i won't get the web search response.
Also i found a bug, if you switch to less transparency mode, the icons that appear on the screen when you lower/increase brightness/volume have some black corners (basically the images are not displayed properly).
Thanks

Go to the System/Spotlight preference pane and in the Search Results pane check the Bing Web Searches checkbox.

  • Spotlight not searching recent iPhoto titles

I upgraded to iphoto 06 and imported some photos. I gave them all their own appropriate names in the title bar. Closed iphoto. No problem. Opened iphoto again, it crashed right away. And again right away.
Opened iphoto later and imported some more photos. Gave them names too.
Now, spotlight won't find the most recent entries, post crash. It will find everything else ok.
I've tried using spotlightindexer on my iphoto folder to no avail.
    What else should I try?
(I've the read the thread a couple posts down, but it doesn't seem particularly relevant, and now its discussion is going off in a separate direction)

I scraped together a solution for myself from the myriad of options that were presented here on the forums.
After trying all the reindexing and rebuilding options (including reupgrading from v5), I burned my library to a DVD, completely erased the original library, then reimported.
I lost albums, but whatever; I really needed to do some housecleaning anyway!
Still, things weren't perfect. However, NOW i was able to use the "apply keyword" trick to make things happen.
I had my library split on two discs. After I imported the second disc, those files weren't being indexed either. Again, applying a keyword, quitting iphoto, opening iphoto, removing the keyword, quitting, then searching worked. I don't know that all that quitting is necessary, but I wasn't going to mess with something that was working. Hopefully this can help someone else out too!

  • Spotlight not offering any new Yosemite results (Wikipedia, Maps, App Store, Web Search etc.)

    User from Europe (Finland) here.
    Problem:
My Spotlight only offers local hits (including limited local dictionary results) which is very gimped down version of what is advertised.
"Spotlight pulls information from new sources like Wikipedia, news sites, Maps, iTunes, movie listings, and more." from https://www.apple.com/osx/design/
    Screenshot with simple example:
    So far I've tried:
Made sure I have everything checked on in Spotlight preferences.
    Rebooted.
Forced Spotlight to rebuild its index by first excluding Macintosh HD and then removing it from exclusions.
    Rebooted again.
Made sure location preferences that system services has access to my location.
Made sure there is no firewall restrictions, proxies etc.
Tried to change Safari search engine from DuckDuckGo to Bing
    Removed Adblock extensions from Safari.
I have no idea why my Spotlight isn't working as it's supposed to be.
Spotlight calculator and unit conversions work fine.
As an European I'm used to getting the cold shoulder from various nice iOS features (no movie listings in Siri, for example) but I cannot think why Wikipedia or Map results would be removed from Spotlight if I'm from Europe.
Any help would be appreciated but complete reinstall of Yosemite is unfortunately out of the question due to work.
Another example of Spotlight failing to offer anything from the web.

    Hi there Usernamenotok,
You may want to take a look at your Spotlight Suggestions and Location settings. The page below form the USer Guide has more information.

If you do not want your Spotlight search queries and Spotlight Suggestions usage data sent to Apple, you can turn off Spotlight Suggestions. Simply deselect the checkboxes for both Spotlight Suggestions and Bing Web Searches in the Search Results pane of Spotlight preferences in System Preferences on your Mac. If you turn off Spotlight Suggestions and Bing Web Searches, Spotlight will search the contents of only your Mac.
You can turn off Location Services for Spotlight Suggestions in the Privacy pane of System Preferences on your Mac by clicking Details next to System Services, then deselecting Spotlight Suggestions. If you turn off Location Services on your Mac, your precise location will not be sent to Apple. To deliver relevant search suggestions, Apple may use the IP address of your Internet connection to approximate your location by matching it to a geographic region.

  • Spotlight & Mail Search Not Working After Deleting email Account's '.OfflineCache' File.  How Do I Get Back to Normal?

    Running OSX 10.7.4 and Mail.5.2.
One of 3 email accounts was constantly trying, but unable to synch.  The rotating splines were turning non-stop but not synching (other two email accounts worked just fine.)  After doing some searching on the internet, I found several articles about this.  Many included the symptom of the "Recovered Messages" constantly being recovered/generated.  I had noticed that I would get some recovered messages on occaision, but had never noticed it to be problematic.  These articles suggested that the ".OfflineCache" file for that email account had been corrupted or the root of my problem.  So, I deleted the .OfflineCach file as per this article...
Fix OSX Mail Creating Multiple 'Recovered Message
Well that got my mail working again.  However, I soon noticed that spotlight no longer works and when I try to search mail, it doesn't work.  It will only return a complete email address/contact; it doesn't search the contents of the email.
I tried to get spotlight to re-index the hard drive.  However, when I try to drag a folder or volume to it, I get the error:
Since spotlight and mail search have always worked flawlessly for 5 years, I'm confident this is related to having deleted " .OffflineCache" for that particular email account.  However, it seems strange that mail search won't work for the other email accounts.
Any other tips for getting spotlight back online?
How about the .OfflineCache file.  Will Mail restore it, replace it on it's own?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Also, looking back, not long before this problem started, I was trying to send a single email with numerous pictures ( around 50 or so.)  I forgot to select "medium" for the picture size and it started trying to upload them at full size.  I realized this after a minute or two and cancelled the upload, changed to 'medium' and sent the email with no problem.  I point this out because the "Multiple Recovered Messages" error seems to be related to or being induced by having an excessively large file in the particular mail account's .Offline.Cache file.

Well, a couple days later and it seems that the .offlinecache has been rebuilt.  Finder, Spotlight, & Mail search all seem to be working normally now!

  • Spotlight does not search the notes field in contacts

I can't get spotlight to search the notes field in a contact. I think that this used to work a short while ago. Am I missing something here?

That's just how iOS is right now. You should try out the "Contact Notes" app. It's just $0.99 (in the US), and lets you display and search all your contact notes, all from one page. Here's a link to iTunes page: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/contact-notes/id396281211?mt=8
Full disclosure: I made the app.

  • Spotlight will not search...

    Here is what happened.
Finder hard crashed so badly that it required that I shut off the computer.(Mac Pro) I could not even bring up force quit.
When it came back up, Spotlight just would not search. It would come up, but typing in a term would do nothing, not even the spinning progress circle.
I did the steps to add the hard drives to the Privacy tab in preferences and removed to force the reindexing the drives two times now. Even after that, it still produces the same action. I can type in the search term(s) and nothing happens.
I will try to repair the disk permissions later and another account, if it is the user account, how do I repair mine to work? Also, could it be something else?
    Mac Pro 2.66ghz Mac OS X (10.4.8) </span

You may want to repair the disk (filesystem)-not just permissions-since you had to force the computer to shut down before.
To do this, restart the computer from the OS X installation DVD by holding [C] as the computer starts up.
After the language selection, select Utilities>DiskUtility from the menubar and run the Repair Disk option.

I installed version 3.6.13 and discovered that my favorite search engines (Bing and Startpage) were not compatible with this version. Can this incompatibility be rectified?

Makes enough sense and I thought it might be a profile issue, but only after the fact, so why does is not say this upfront ...
In the release notes I find this about installation:
-- and exactly what I read:
    Installing
Please note that installing Firefox 4 Beta will not overwrite your existing installation of Firefox. You won’t lose any of your bookmarks or browsing history, but some of your extensions and other add-ons might not work until updates for them are made available.
nothing more nothing less... nowhere in that installation process does it say, state or imply -- Create a new profile first -- or see xxxxx article about using betas /pre-release, etc...
Well, I could cry about it more, but I guess not too many other people have had this problem, I did search a bit before posting my question , and I consider myself pretty competent about this kind of stuff..
Next task ... ... ... Is there any place a backup is stored in the profile folders that have maybe my 3.6.12 Extensions and Extensions settings????
I know the main folder is located here " %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\ "
but I am not currently on that particular PC to look at it to see if I can figure it out myself.
So any help will be GREATLY appreciated!!!
I may have a backup created recently with MozBackup 1.4.10, but again I will have to look on that PC when I get back there tomorrow... ... ...
So any help will be GREATLY appreciated!!!

  • After updating to 4.3.5, spotlight does not search within text messages

    HI,
I just updated my iPhone 4 to 4.3.5 and Spotlight does not search within the text of my SMS text messages any more. It only searches by the name of the SMS senders. There does not seem to be any setting I can adjust and I have restarted the phone several times but nothing changed.

I figured out how to get it working while retaining your data.
Connect your phone and perform a full backup.
Erase all data/media or restore the phone
Select setup as a new iPhone when prompted in iTunes.  Give it some other name (i.e. "New").
Grab a copy of iBackupBot from here http://www.icopybot.com/itunes-backup-manager.htm
Run iBackupBot and select the new backup
In the file list, locate the file name SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist
Open the plist be double-clicking on it.
Copy the contents of this file to clipboard.
Select the full backup of your iphone under it's original name (make sure to grab the one with the latest date).
    Locate SystemConfiguation/preferences.plist
Scroll to the bottom and note the Hostname for your phone.
Replace the contents of this file with the that from the "New" backup making sure to change the hostname and phone name in the last section of the plist.
Save the changes to the plist.
    Connect your iPhone to iTunes
Right-click on it and select "Restore from backup"
Locate the latest backup under your phone's original name
When it's done restoring and reinstalling your applications, you should once again have push notifications that work over the cellular network.

  • YIKES! "Searching" & Spotlight not finding

OK, I'm scared. I copy the name of a file. I do a Cmd + F and paste the name of the file into the "Search for" field. Nothing. I have only one criteria, "Kind" "Any" I ask to search the directory it's in. No response. I remove and add the directory to the parameters continually. No response.
    Spotlight not finding it either.
I try others. Same thing. Spotlight preferences are factory default and include "Music."
I have two files with the string I am looking for, one in a directory on my hard drive, not locked, I read and write to it daily. The other file is on a CD.
I ask to search both places. Spotlight finds the string on the CD but not on my hard drive. I started trying other files in other directories and I'm getting the same thing in the Finder Search. Spotlight not as bad, but still has problems.
This string is "stoddard." The file on the drive is actually located in two different directories and is labeled "1.01_stoddard.mp3" The one that it does find on the CD is "AUGUST 6 STODDARD.mp3"
Help me. This is scaring me. I've got tons of people I am converting to Mac. This is not going to go over well.
I've been looking and I just can't find any options or parameters I should be checking that would affect this. This is pretty simple stuff.
I tried looking for envelope.rtf which is in a completely different directory and Search did not find it though Spotlight did.
    -Wm

My results are disturbing. My eMac G4 doesn't seem to have a problem with finding files. My G5 definitely does. And it has a few other funny glitches, like a couple of my Mail filters are wonky. I've set up hundreds of them and there are three that are just plain stuck and send the mail to unexpected places or don't filter at all.
Since the Spotlight glitch is intermittent, I don't think we can set up any benchmarks between us. Because Spotlight might not find envelope.rtf on my system, doesn't mean it won't find the filename on yours.
What you need to do is search for various files on your system and see if Spotlight finds them.
I doubt this is a string recognition problem, it's likely a search program error at the processor level. Probably something to do with the logic that makes the search appear speedy. Likely there's something in that programming that "falls out" when G5 is processing.
Apple is ****-bent on getting the G6 out there pronto. These anomalies may be why.
    -Wm
    Your results are strange.
If I try using your "1.01_stoddard.mp3" filename I
find the file with the Spotlight menu, the Spotlight
    window and a smart folder.
If I delete the file, then search for it again
"1.01_stoddard.mp3" it is, of course not found, then
I create a new file and rename it to
    "1.01_stoddard.mp3" Spotlight finds it immediately.
Do you want to try to debug this here in the
    discussion?

  • Forcing spotlight to search the web

Is there a way to force spotlight to search the web. In other words, I'd like to force spotlight to send my search query to bing directly.
    Any ideas?

No, it's not OK. Not quite. Almost OK.
But if that's your skill level, you don't have a hope in hell of writing a program to search the Internet for anything at all. Not yet.

  • Spotlight SOMETIMES searches mail, but mail.app shows no results

    Hi folks,
I've been anxiously waiting for the Mavericks release, hoping it would, once-and-for-all, fix this aggravating issue I've had with spotlight mail searches.
I recently carried out a full wipe-and-reinstall on my iMac, by creating a bootable clone of my main desktop, then booting from that drive and using disk utility to erase my main hard drive, and selecting that drive in the Mavericks installer.  This means that I had a 100% pristine installation of Mavericks - no old preferences, no old settings, no weird filesystem permissions issues, and yet this problem STILL persists.
I have three different Gmail email accounts, all connected via IMAP, and all saving the emails locally for offline viewing (although I don't believe this is an option anymore in Mavericks).  When I first added these accounts to Mail.app, I was unable to search them either in Spotlight or in Mail.app.
I have since undergone multiple attempts to fix it, and occasionally during the process Spotlight has worked(although it shows multiple historical versions of sent mails due to auto-save), but searching from within Mail.app remained broken no matter what I did.
These are the things I've tried:
    running 'mdimport -r /Library/Spotlight/Mail.mdimporter'
adding and removing ~/Library/Mail to the spotlight 'do not index these files' privacy setting
adding and removing the entire hard drive to the 'do not index' list
using 'mdutil -E' to erase and rebuild the index
manually removing the Envelope Index files from ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData, then re-launching mail to force it to rebuild the index
using the menus within mail to rebuild the mailboxes
This has been broken for several versions of Mac OS, and it's obscene that there hasn't been any progress on the issue.  Please tell me that somebody has some new ideas that I haven't tried yet - I've been struggling with this headache literally for YEARS, and it has really soured me on an otherwise excellent Apple experience.

    I finally figured it out!
The trick was that I had some old versions of Mail.app in an archived folder, and these versions were screwing up spotlight, even though they haven't been run in years.  Removing the old versions, then updating the spotlight index and rebuilding the Envelope Index files seems to have fixed my search.
For others who, like me, have spent YEARS of constantly re-indexing things to fix it - there is an odd quirk in the way OS X associates files, where it seeks out Applications anywhere on your computer (including external hard drives), and the presence of those Applications can mess things up even if you aren't running them.  This seems to be rarely discussed in proposed solutions, but it was absolutely the fix for me.

  • Spotlight not working within program. Please HELP!

Spotlight not working within programs. Cannot not locate files on network volumes.
For example: if I am using Photoshop or MultiAd Creator Pro, and want to open a file, I will do File>Open and  use spotlight in the "Open" dialog, and it doesn't ever find anything? I can see the files but if I search it fails to locate. Same thing happens if I try to "Place Graphic" In MultiAd and other programs. It appears to be a universal issue regardless of program.
I tried re-indexing spot light via the system preferences (privacy, drag in volume, remove volume). I also tried re-indexing via terminal.
I tried mounting the volumes via afp, smb, cifs and nothing works!!
    This issue is handicapping production.
