Spotlight on Xsan gone beserk

Anyone ever seen spotlight indexing errors on Xsan 2? Xsan Admin was hanging badly when trying to index the Xsan volume. It's just a theory at this points, but spotlight seems to hate files from Unix or Windows, especially files which are unique on those filesystems but not on Mac OS X.
Some of the errors which makes me think it's spotlight related:
MDSChannelPeerRequest: (ipc/mig) server raised exception com.apple.metadata.mds[62]
XSANFSFSCTLSpotlightRPC fsctl failed (errno = 45)ERROR: _MDSChannelInitForXsan: _XsanCreateMDSChannel failed: 45
com.apple.metadata.mds[62]
ERROR: _MDSChannelXsanFetchAccessTokenForUID: dead channel
mds[62]
(Error) Message: MDSChannel RPC failure (fetchPropertiesForContext:) [no channelAccessToken]

Same here. Turned of Spotlight indexing on the three filesystems, but errors still comming identical to yours
Probably not related, but who knows, also have loads of Console Log Entries (in the All Messages bit of console) that state...
xsand Automount: volume options are not a dictionary
This I think comes from the automount.plist file that has a field marked...
<key>MountOptions</key>
and I suspect the MountOptions bit needs to be swapped for something else, but I have no idea what.

  • After Mavericks update spotlight search menu gone, not possible to use spotlight at all

    Hello,
I updated last week to Mavericks and since the update Spotlight is completely gone.
It's not possible any more to get to the spotlight search at all. I checked the Spotlight in the preferences the keyboard short-cuts (apple default) are still enabled but nothing happens.
Even the spotlight magnifier icon in the menu bar is not there any more.
    Can anybody help?

Some of your user files (not system files) have incorrect permissions or are locked. This procedure will unlock those files and reset their ownership, permissions, and access controls to the default. If you've intentionally set special values for those attributes, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it, but you do need to follow the instructions below.
    Back up all data.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.
Enter the following command in the Terminal window in the same way as before (triple-click, copy, and paste):
    sudo find ~ $TMPDIR.. -exec chflags nouchg,nouappnd {} + -exec chown $UID {} + -exec chmod +rw {} + -exec chmod -N {} + -type d -exec chmod +x {} + 2>&-
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take several minutes to run, depending on how many files you have. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if you prefer not to take it, or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
              Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open. In that window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button
    Select
               ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • Spotlight on xsan not working for clients

I have a xsan.  There are four clients running 10.8.5 and two mdc mac mini's running 10.8.5.  The clients are unable to get search results of items on the san volumes.  Any help would be appreciated.

The active MDC does the indexing. It's not the fsm process that runs the volume that does the indexing, but rather Spotlight related processes (mds, mdworking, mdimport, etc) which are accessing files on the volume which the MDC has mounted as an Xsan client. The volume has to be mounted on the active MDC for indexing to work. The mount has to occur after Spotlight has been enabled on the volume.
    As stated in this article:
Xsan 2.x: If an Xsan volume failover occurs before Spotlight becomes active, the Backup Controller may not enable Spotli…
"Use Xsan Admin to unmount and remount the volume on the controller that is currently hosting the volume.  It may still take several minutes for Spotlight to activate."
You could also do this on the MDC (which you would have to do if it's a Yosemite MDC):
    sudo xsanctl unmount VolumeName
    sudo xsanctl mount VolumeName

  • Spotlight pref pane gone

I just opened up my system preferences pane and in the upper right hand corner where the spotlight preferences pane once was, there is now nothing.
The pane is still in the System/Library/PreferencesPanes folder, but I can't get it to show up in system preferences.
What have I done and how can I fix this?

Yes, nothing seems to work. I even did a Get Info on the Spotlight .plist file and the status was read only. I changed it to read and write, rebooted, but it still is gone.
I was using Spotless to turn off Spotlight indexing awhile back, but when I used it to turn indexing back on, the pane was gone.
I hope it returns in Snow Leopard.

  • MAIL gone beserk

I've used Mail for years, and all of a sudden this morning it is going beserk. It has been DL'ing messages that have been previously read and trashed over the past 3 years. It is still going. Indicates it now has 14,942 messages to go in my Inbox. And that number is increasing. What the 'ell is going on. I've made absolutely no changes to anything. Same OSX 10.4.11, Mail 2.1.2. I've done nothing! And now this. And it continues to DL with the little gear wheel spinning away. Been doing this for over an hour now. HELP!!!

How very odd that is. On what command begins this? The mailbox may have a corrupt file and is running amuck. I can give hints to re-build the mailbox, yet the cause eludes me. How very odd...
    Peace,

  • Junk filter gone beserk

There are many times when the junk filter has marked perfectly good mail as junk, and vice versa. Now something else is happening, something new that only started within the last month or so. Click on an incoming mail that is correctly tagged as junk and it suddenly loses its junk status. I then have to re-junk it. What gives?

There appears to be more than one thing going on here, but let’s start with the following first, and see whether it makes a difference:
    1. Go to Preferences > Junk Mail and disable junk mail filtering.
    2. Quit Mail, then open it again.
    3. Go to Preferences > Junk Mail, enable junk mail filtering, and configure it however you wish.
    4. Reset the junk filter database (Preferences > Junk Mail > Reset).

  • MAYDAY!!! HELP !!! MAIL HAS GONE BESERK ON ME

    Hi:
I have been traveling and was accessing Mail on my iMac from my laptop. I am back in my office today trying to organize for the week and here is what is happening regarding my Mail program:
    1) It seems that email on August 30th or later cannot be accessed, specifically, when I click on an email after this date, it comes up blank but any emails before this date are accessible and fine.
    2) I sent the same email account/Mail a test message from itself and the message was not received on the account (but shows up on my BB handheld).
    3) When I quit Mail it does not quick. I have to force quit.
    4) The counter for Mail down on the Dock (in read show hundreds of new mail that I can't find in the InBox.
Can you save me? Please help.
    thanks Kirk

How much free disk space do you have on your Mac? Have you installed anything recently, just before this problem started?
Your Mail index could be corrupted and need rebuilding, so to do that:
    1. Quit Mail if it's running.
    2. Go to Home/Library/Mail and remove the Envelope Index file, but do not delete it.
    3. Go to Home/Library/Caches/Mail and remove all the subfolders within that Mail folder.
    e. Restart Mail and allow it to import your existing messages; when it's done, your Mail index will have been rebuilt.
    4. Test Mail to see if those messages are now accessible.

  • APPLICATIONS FOLDER HAS GONE BESERK - PLEASE HELP!

For the past few weeks, most of my apps no longer are visible in the applications folder.
The apps work; finder shows them as residing in the apps folder.
If I go to the applications folder, though, all I see are the apps with names that begin with "A", plus the CALCULATOR app.
Everything else [Quicktime, MS Office, etc.] does not appear.
However, all the applications are working, and finder shows them as being located in the apps folder.
Today, I found I cannot ADD new apps to my apps folder.
It will not accept new apps.
I am trying to install dashline 2.0 [a new app for me].
When I drag the app to the apps folder, the time bar appears and runs through the move.
However, the app never appears in the apps folder.
When I search in finder, dashline does NOT show up as being in the app folder.
If I try again, to drag the app to the apps folder, I get a prompt telling me the app is already in the apps folder.
I googled these problems but all the answers I find have to do with setting up new computers, transferring from one computer to another, or 'losing' apps from the computer altogether.
Here is the info on my computer.
    MacBook Pro
    17" late 2011
    Mac OSX 10.7.5
    1.4Ghz Intel Core i7
    16GB Memory
    not networked or shared
Please help if you can.  I am hugely confounded on this one.

  • Several mysterious problems with Solaris 11 x86 install

    Hi folks,
I've recently installed Solaris 11 x86 as a replacement for Solaris 9 SPARC on an Ultra 2 machine. I like the operating system, but I've promptly acquired some mysterious problems. The computer is a Fujitsu Siemens Esprimo E2500 with a Pentium 4 HT 3.06 GHz processor, 2 GB RAM, an 80 GB SATA disk and a 147 GB SCSI disk.
I have had a few occasions on which the screen goes totally blank, the monitor claims that there is no signal, and I have to restart the machine. However, with the blank screen, the hard drive activity light is sometimes still flashing. This happens predictably when I try to log off (as opposed to shutting down) and when I use Totem media player and click on anything inside the Totem window. The motherboard has built-in graphics and brief specifications can be found here:
    http://uk.ts.fujitsu.com/rl/servicesupport/techsupport/professionalpc/ESPRIMO/Datasheets/ds_esprimo_edition_e2500.pdf
Yesterday my PS/2 keyboard started causing the motherboard to beep crazily when I use it. It beeps rapidly 4 times, then prints the expected character. However, the problem doesn't occur at the initial log in screen. The mouse cursor has also gone beserk on one occasion, flying all over the screen (I had this problem with a previous PC, but a different OS, and thought it was a hardware fault, which I why I got this new computer). With the keyboard problem, the machine is basically unusable. However, it is configured as a dual boot machine, and the keyboard problem isn't present with Windows XP.
There are also a few smaller, odd problems. Occasionally all the icons vanish from my Gnome desktop. The command prompt also mysteriously changed from $chris@pluto to $bash-4.1 just before the keyboard problem appeared, although that might have had something to do with me copying my home directory to a different disk and editing the /etc/auto_home file (moving the home directory worked fine). Also, unlike with Solaris 9 SPARC, I find that I have to have external SCSI devices switched on at boot time, should I want to use them later. That's a pain. With Solaris 9, I could run "boot -r" when I first attached the device, then switch on the SCSI devices and mount them whenever I wanted.
After the useful advice I received here about "more" and "less", I thought I'd post these problems and see if anyone can help. I'd really appreciate some advice. Can anyone identify likely causes for these problems? Which problems can I expect to solve and which do I have to live with?

  • Cant find app store helppppp

i cant find the app store on my computer it is not in my applications folder, dock, desktop and ive tried looking in spotlight but its gone how can i get it back

The App store was first available in 10.6.5
You won't find it on your computer until you buy the 10.6 DVD, and install it on your Mac, and update it to a near-current version.
In the US, the local store does not carry the DVD any more, only the online store. US$29.

    crewman76,
Find the com.apple.systemuiserver.plist file in your ~Library/Preferences Folder, and the com.apple.systemuiserver.000a9597ad54.plist file (your file will have a different alpha/numeric sequence) in your ~Library/Preferences/ByHost Folder, drag them to the Desktop, and log out/in or restart.

  • ITunes deleting/losing songs

I have read some topics, but they don't appear to apply to my actual problem.
Does iTunes delete unplayed songs? Because it seems like every so often songs I haven't played appear to disappear. And I don't see them in my HD folder. Can anyone help me find them or explain how to stop it?

    Hey everyone,
I have noticed the exact same thing as ccpickre above, lots of poeple have posted that itunes has lost track of songs that still exist in the library folder. I still get the "original file could not be found" message and little exclamation mark, but itunes is **** right because I can't find it using spotlight either, its gone from the library!
I don't believe that itunes would delete old songs, not even if your hard disk was full. Ccpickre , have you copied your library from another HD at some point? When I got my new mac I simply copied the library and library file from the old to the new. The songs that are going missing cannot all have been missing since before I copied, though, because more and more are being lost. I also tend only to get the message when I sync my ipod, itunes says "some songs, including xxx could not be copied to your ipod because they could not be found", yet xxx tends to change, indicating that more and more are being lost. All a bit odd
The fact remains, however, that they are all songs I have not played for some time... Much as I'd like not to lose them, I can't be arsed to listen to all 10 days of music just to bring their play counts up to date!! Any other suggestions?!
    Cheers,
    Tim

  • Periodic Insanity - t61 sometimes seems to be getting an overload of input

I just got a used t61, which I love, but I've noticed a really troublesome problem.
I'm running Windows 7 32bit w all the latest updates and Office 2007 similarly updated.
Sometimes when I'm using Word or Excel, the program will suddenly seem like I'm holding down a key forever. It'll lock up and take all of the resources of one of the two cores, and I can rarely pull it out of this state.
Right now, for example, the paper I was writing in Word has gone beserk. I saw the cursor fly up the screen as if I were holding down CTRL+left (I wasn't). It flew all the way to the top and then I couldn't do anything and still can't. I can't switch to the program with ALT+Tab, but I can bring it up if I right click the taskbar and select the document that way. I can't do anything but look at it, though. Task Manager is showing that WINWORD is using 49% of the CPU, but it doesn't say its not responding.
I've noticed the same problem in Excel, though I'm usually able to get out of the infinite loop in that case just by clicking the program and waiting and hitting escape (I dont really know why it usually works).
Does anyone have ideas about this? It's really kind of a deal breaker - I cant be lokcing up Word and Excel every two hours.
switch to the program to view it, and it does not seem to have officially locked up (task manager still shows it). I
I've set all my Office programs to autosave every three minutes, but this is insane.
Does anyone know what the problem could be?
