Spotlight preferences wont open.

After migrating from a time-machine backup I cannot change the spotlight preferences because the preferences pane will not open. When I click the Spotlight icon in the preferences app I get this error message:
Could not load Spotlight preference pane.
However spotlight still works normally. I just need to exluce a folder from indexing.

Update: I tried reinstalling OS X using the OS X recovery drive and still got the error message.
However this issue does not exist anymore as I formatted my drive and installed a fresh copy of OS X on my computer.
In conclusion: Format drive, reinstall OS X.

To make sure that we are on the same page, you cannot open System Preferences. Have you tried opening it from the Apple Drop down menu? If you are still unsuccessful, then the next step would be to reinstall OS X Snow Leopard as that app is part of the operating system and the reinstallation with all the software updates afterwards will resolve the issue.

so im still kinda new to my macbook and the other day i noticed that my system preferences was gone and i can not find it, and i do not know what i did or what happened. is there anywhere i can download it from or anything like that?

i have a mac OSX version 10.5.8 under apple and system preference when i try to open it does not respond. i can not defreg my hard drive howe do i fix this proplem

First, Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if things work OK in Safe Mode.
Then move these files to the Desktop...

/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist

What OS are you using? The answer might change troubleshooting.
Does anything happen? Does it bounce in the dock?
Have you tried control - clicking the application in the dock and selecting open?
Have you tried opening it in the Applications folder?

Heres my problem :
The System Preferences wont open at all. I already tried clicking on " > System Preferences" and that doesn't work. Resetting my computer doesn't seem to work either. I've also tried looking it up in Spotlight, but that didn't work either. The Application disappeared off of my Dock as well. The same thing happend to my Terminal Application. If I try and change something that originally was in the System Preferences (Such as Dock or Display or Parental Controls) it brings up stuff like "prefPane". "_CodeSignature" and "CodeResources" also pop up also. Advice? Suggestions?

System preferances Gone and wont open

Well, i have read Numerous sites look for an answer to this problem... a few months i completely whiped out the computer and deleted everything on it ( Not everything, just personal stuff). Well after that i left if off for a few days then started it back up and system preferences wont open. I have gone the the little apple/settings part od this whole thing and tried to open it by clicking "System Preferences" yet nothing happenes... I have gone into the Application folder and looked for it there and nothing pops up. i have used spotlight to search for it and Nothing comes up when i search System preferences. By it just not being on my macbook ( Except for the "System preferences..." button but that doesnt work). Is there anywere i can download it?? ( I have also updated it and sliped in the CD , still wont work.)

Finder, Mac HD, System Preferences, and Trash wont open!

Some icons on my desktop have become blank, and I cannot open finder in the dock. I click it, but it wont open. I cant open the "Mac HD" icon in the desktop either. Same with trash. I can use spotlight to search for things, but it is becoming very tedious, for I have never used it before. This all started when one night, I turned off my Mac Mini Version 10.5.8. When I turned it on, this issue occured. I have shut off, and restarted numerous times, done a boot to single user mode, even created a new user by entering all those letters after pressing shift, and the S key, but still, nothing! Please help me I don't know what to do :'(

Before doing anything make sure you have at least two backups.
Boot from your Tiger install disk and select Disk Utility from the menu after you select your language. Repair your boot disk. If there are any errors repeat the repair process until no errors are reported. Repair permissions.
If that doesn't help try resetting the PRAM. Hold down the Option-Command-P-R keys right after you hear the startup chime. Keep holding down the keys until the startup chime sounds twice.
If things still aren't working properly you can try installing the 10.5.8 Combo update over your current installation.

As a last resort you could try doing an archive and install followed by an erase and install if the archive and install is unsuccessful.

VLC wont open??

VLC wont open any more since i started using OS Yosemite. It bounces on my bottom screen and wont open. I have to hard quit to make it disapear. I've even deleted it and downloaded the newest version of VLC and still the same thing. Can spmeone please help!!

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

Certain pages wont open

I just did a complete new install, all the updates everything was running well, all the webpages were opening.
then, all of a sudden (nothing new installed, except for a new logitec mouse (but that shouldnt matter) things go screwy:
I can get to yahoo and gmail, but when I try to open or send mail I cant. Ever.
websites like airplane ticktes or downloads wont open. Safair just spins and spins and spins.
it is weird, because, like I said, it used to work. and my wifes ibook, on the same dsl internet, works fine.
i checked and she DOESNT have java 5.0, only 1.3. and 1.4. .
I have 1.4.2 and 5.0. I checked at the java.com site, and it said i need to update to verson 7, but I cant find it and is that the problem anyway?

The next thing I would try would be to delete Safari's preferences file which is called "com.apple.Safari.plist". First quit Safari. The easiest way to get to it is to paste the name (without quotes) into Spotlight. You will get one entry. Click on Show All and you can then drag the plist to the trash. Restart Safari. A new preferences file will be created, You will have to redo any changes you made through Preferences.

HELP!!! Mail wont open

Hi can someone pleaseeeeee help me with this problem. It all started about a month and half ago and i am unable to open mail. I have my mail in my dock and everytime i click on it i see "mail" at the top of the browser but the actual mail server or browser doesn't open. I dont know if this had to do with me downloading a mail notifier from google gmail and since then when i tried to open mail it stop working it wont open! i uninstalled the google app and it still wont open i tired everything i think, i even turned off the computer and back on and nothing. I have a mac book pro tiger 10.4.11 Please HELP! thanks in advance.

First I'd backup your whole Mail folder, with a right Mouse click>Archive, move to a safe place, also move the file below to a safe place.
Try moving this file first, then logout/in...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
If that doesn't work try the .plists in...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/
If you wish to reinstall Mail, it's on your Install Disk.

Itunes wont open. itunes has stopped working message Please help!!

I had itune 10.1 working just normal, and suddenly it wont open.
even before that, 1st problem i had was with Quick time, i couldnt uninstall it, kept saying newer version of Quick time installed..or something like that. and i figured out to install itunes without unstalling quick time. (thanks to Google) and was working fine for a month, and suddenly, now iTune wont open. I tried unstalling it, and reinstalled... that's pretty much i can do now!! still no hope!! (btw, I use Vista, 32bit!) Please help me... here's what Problem report shows..

Itunes wont open when iphone connected to mac, please help?!

i updated my iphone 4s and tried connecting it to my mac but itunes wont open at all, so i updated mac software as well as itunes, and itunes still won't open up when i connect my phone.
P.S. iv'e already tried taking the USB cord out and plugging it back in twice already... still wont open.

Itunes wont open from desktop icon or anwhere else

ive installed recent itunes and it still wont open. ive repaired itunes and it still wont work. i continue getting an error message. i dont want to lose my music so i really dont want to uninstall.any advice would be great!

Can you post the error message in full.
Also try to start QUicktime. iTunes can't work without it. Does Quicktime start and work normally? If not describe what happens and give any error message in full.
Then head for your control panel and try to start QUicktime preferences. If you get an error message post it in full.
