Spotlight problem: privacy list error won't go away

My Spotlight suddenly stopped being able to find anything. So I tried dragging the main disk's icon onto (and then off of) the Privacy tab of Spotlight, to ask it to re-index. But it gave me the Privacy Index error. So I went to Terminal and did sudo rm -rf /.Spotlight-V100, which succeeded, but: the privacy list error is still there, and oddly - the one thing that used to be in my privacy tab is still there! I thought that info was somewhere in the /.Spotlight-V100/... folder - how is it still there?!? What's a better way to wipe that info and ask Spolight to re-do everything?

I'm ruddy well frustrated
And we understand that. Most of us have been in similar situations. But troubleshooting a problem is hard enough in real life. When all we have to go on is words typed here, it's of the utmost importance to be painstakingly precise. In your case, it is very often the solution to reboot the iPod while it's plugged into the wall, and you had never stated clearly that you had done that. Go back and read your previous posts if you doubt it. If we are able to help each other, we have to know exactly what has happened, and even then it's not easy. And again, we are all just fellow users who come here voluntarily to help each other, so all getting mad at us does is make people not want to help you.
There are several things that might be going wrong, but one that I would test is your cable. Perhaps some of the wires inside have broken and that's why it's not realizing it is plugged into the wall outlet. Do you have a friend that you can borrow a cable from to test that out? (And to answer your question about the dock, it won't make any difference.)

  • Spotlight: "Privacy List Error: ... couldn't be added ... unknown error"

G'day all. I'm having a spotlight problem and I'd be very grateful for any help.
    In short:
Spotlight refuses to index one of my partitions, and both the Privacy "trick" in System Preferences to force a re-index, plus using mdutil in the terminal, both produce unknown errors.
If anyone has any ideas, please help!
    More information if you're interested:
I have my hard drive partitioned into two, one for the OS the other for my home folder. I've used the advanced settings in the System Preferences > Accounts to tell my user account to find my home folder on the second partition.
Spotlight refuses to work with the home folder volume.
When I try to go into System Preferences > Spotlight > Privacy and add the offending volume to that, I get a message saying "Privacy List Error: The item couldn't be added or removed because of an unknown error."
If in Terminal I try the following:
    mdutil -sv /Volumes/David/
    I get back:
    /volumes/David:
    Indexing disabled.
    I try:
    mdutil -v -i on /Volumes/David/
    I get back:
    /volumes/David:
Error: unable to perform operation. (-1)
    Indexing disabled.
I've tried the above statements both logged in as root as well as logged in as me.
I've also tried Spotless and get an equally unhelpful "unknown error".
Usually when updating my system I just do an upgrade install, and admittedly this has left a lot of legacy stuff lying around over the years, and various problems have been building recently, including this one, so a few weeks ago I bit the bullet and gave my system a full clean out:
I swapped my existing hard drive for a new one, formatted the new one, set up the partitions afresh, did a clean install (from the 10.5.4 discs that came with my MacBook Pro), then software updated everything (up to 10.5.6), and then clean reinstalled most of my applications, and manually dragged all my personal stuff back in from the original hard drive (which now is sitting in an external case as a backup in case I realise I've forgotten to transfer something, down the track).
All my other problems have gone away and my system is snappier than it's been in a long time, which is great (and not unexpected!), but this spotlight problem persists. I'm usually pretty clued up with Mac stuff and am generally comfortable in the Terminal but this one's got me stumped. If anyone can help me figure out what is causing this error, I'd be most grateful.
    Thanks!

Thanks V.K. for the suggestions. I've just tried all that, but unfortunately it has not changed the situation.
System Preferences > Spotlight > Privacy, and mdutil both still give the same results as before.
A bunch more info in case it's relevant/helpful:
    1. The volume in question IS my home folder. ie. the path to my home folder as defined in the Advanced Settings part of System Preferences > Accounts is "/Volumes/David/" (and yes the volume name is "David" with a capital "D"). I mention all that so I can ask is there any problem with having my home folder = a volume? I can't see any reason why this shouldn't work, and for what it's worth this spotlight problem is only recent whereas I've been using this set up ever since I got Leopard on the day it originally came out (and spotlight had been working fine for months until recently).
    2. I wonder if there's something else on that volume that's causing problems, or some permissions issue? If it might be any use in diagnosing this issue, here's some ls's:

    3. here's an interesting entry from the console at the point where I tried to add the volume to System Preference > Spotlight > Privacy:
mds[32] nosymlink_mkdir() unable to realpath or parent paths do not match p:/Volumes/David/.Spotlight-V100: r:/volumes/David:
    4. I notice that when I do that (add the volume) it gives the error message I originally explained ("couldn't be added or removed because of an unknown error"), and adds the above line to the console, but otherwise it appears that nothing has changed (ie. it doesn't show in the list).
If I then quit system preferences, reopen it, and go back into that Privacy tab the volume IS there in the list. If I then try to remove it, I get the same error message and console message, and again nothing appears to happen, but then if I quit system preferences again and then go back into it, the volume is no longer in the list.
There is definitely something weird going on here.
    Any other thoughts?
    Thanks again!
    David.

  • Spotlight, Privacy List Errors, and Ineffective sudo commands

    Good Evening Apple Spport Community,
I've been having an issue with Spotlight recently. Basically, it was/is not indexing correctly/at all.
My current situation: Spotlight does not display search results for anything but definitions. No Applications. No Folders. No Files. Nothing.  I've attempted several things to remedy this issue.
For instance, I've tried adding and removing my HD from the Spotlight preferences under System Preferences. I receive the Privacy List Error: The item couldn't be added or removed because you don't have the appropriate permissions.
So I read more around the interweb/community and find several suggested sudo commands that may help. I've tried:
    sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.metadata.mds.plist
    sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.metadata.mds.plist
    sudo mdutil -a -i off
    sudo mdutil -a -i on
These do not seem to work.
A possibly unrelated issues is that my TimeMachine (using an external drive) has spot backing up. It'll just sit there with the "preparing backup" message and never go anywhere beyond that.
I've tried my luck trying to interpret a lot of the more technical vernacular on my own, but to no avail of my issue. Thus, I am trying a more direct approach. Any assistance you could provide in this matter would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers.

Well - I guess I just needed to keep searching - Solution #1 worked for me.

  • Help! Network error won't go away

I was setting up my Mac G4 running Tiger and was going to connect it to the network. I opened the Network Prefs and I get a drop-down error message that says "Your Network settings have been changed by another application."
This error message won't go away; if I click OK then the message just comes back. I have to force quit Network Preferences. There is no way to access network prefs while the error message appears. This message appears whether I'm connected (via ethernet) to the router or not.
I don't know what application could have changed my settings or how to change them back or how to make that error message go away. Any suggestions? Thanx.

    Hi Ken,
To stop the pop-up, Go to System Preferences: Security. Check the box next to "Require password to unlock each secure system preference." Then lock Security.
Try this cure for Security update...

  • Popup Error - Won't Go Away

    Recurring pop-up window on boot:
    Popup Error
Failed to listen for incoming Popup jobs. You will not be able to use Popup printing for the duration of this session. Please report this incident to a system administrator.
How do I make this go away? I just upgraded my MacBook from Tiger to Leopard, everything else seems to work fine except for this strange error message. I haven't figured out what Popup printing is, don't really care. Just want this to go away.
    Thanks...

I am having the same issue. Popup printing, I believe, involves printing over a network. For example, at school, I can print from my Mac to any access printer on the school's network through popup printing. It's a great feature, but isn't working because I'm getting this message error as well. I am making a list of all the problems I've had with Leopard since installing. I should be studying but instead I'm having to fix my Mac. Never thought I'd say that. Please, if anyone can help, I need my printer back.

  • Registration Unsuccessful error won't go away

Registration Unsuccessful error message appears every time I open Adobe Acrobat 8 Standard. I recently loaded it onto new computer running Windows 8.1 and successfully registered it. I spoke to tech support and they confirm that it is registered on my new computer. I have tried all the options: submit again, register later and never register but it still comes up every time. Tech support did not know how to stop the message from appearing and suggested I ask the community. I tried the registry fix someone posted for Windows 7 but the path was not the same. I found the Adobe Viewer and changed it as recommended but it didn't work.  Please don't recommend I purchase a newer copy of Acrobat - no money left after getting the new computer and A8 meets all my needs. Does anyone have any ideas?

    Hi Jodiwer,
ThankYou for posting on the forums, Adobe Acrobat 8 is not compatible with windows 7 and above.

  • Ipod error won't go away

My ipod says "Firewire connections are not supported. To transfer songs, connect the USB cable provided. Press center to dismiss". When I press the centre the message just comes back on, and when I connect my USB cable my computer says that Windows does not recognize it. My Ipod will charge and update new songs, but it won't turn off.

    Hi phishy75,
Have you tried resetting your iPod? To reset an iPod:
First, toggle your iPod's "Hold" switch back and forth a couple of times.
Then, press and hold the Menu and Select (center) buttons together for 5-10 seconds.
If that doesn't work, then try forcing your iPod into disk mode, by following the steps here:
    Putting iPod into disk mode
With the iPod in disk mode, connect it to your computer, and try restoring it in iTunes.
If you don't have any success with that (or getting the iPod recognized in iTunes for a restore), then you may just need to let the iPod's battery run down.

  • Snapshot too old error won't go  away ...

I am Oracle 10.2.0.3 on HP UNIX.
I have a 80GB database. I am doing full export with consistent=Y. I get following error towards the end of export:

No other jobs are running or even users accessing the database at the time of export database. My undo table space size is now 6GB (I had started with 2GB and increasing it to 6GB) has not helped. Is there a way to consistently get rid of the error? I am assuming rest of my export is still valid.

What's the size of the UNDO tablespace? Just increase it

  • Backup Assistant Plus error won't go away.

    Hello,
After Backup Assistant Plus was pushed to my phone i keep getting an application error:
Is there a way to disable Backup+ since i will probably never use it.
This is on a Samsung Stratosphere device.
    Thanks,

        Hi NickM219,
Application errors are no good! I know its important to have a properly working phone at all times. Let's get this resolved. If you are not going to use this great feature, you can remove it via MyVerizon http://bit.ly/xB4iTc . Sign in>Click " " sign next to I want to>Plan>Change features>Remove Backup assistant plus> save changes. The device will no longer prompt you to use this application, however the app icon will remain on the device. Keep me posted.

  • Cannot verify server error won't go away

I can not get this error to go away.  I tried restoring on pc but have windows 8 and it's not recognizing the ipad. Any other ideas?

    Three things to try...
Using Windows Explorer navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Reader 11.0\Reader, then double-click on Eula.exe and accept the license agreement
Can you open Adobe Reader by itself?  If so, try disabling Protected Mode [Edit | Preferences | Security (Enhanced)].
It could even be a malware issue; see http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/reader-core-dll-error.html

  • Spotlight gives no results, privacy tab gives me a list error, What The F?

Just did the most recent Apple updates, (excluding 10.5.2 because I'm using Pro Tools HD which doesn't support it yet) and spotlight just plan stopped working. Finder Search produces no results. Privacy tab doesn't work or allow me to drag drives in without producing a unknown 'list error'.
I used Cocktail and Mainmenu to delete all my cache files and manually reindex spotlight, repaired permissions, relaunched finder, trashed the spotlight V100 hidden plist and still NO help, nada.
Then I noticed Time Machine was ON. I don't believe I turned it ON, is it set to ON by default? I turned it off and Spotlight now works fine after reindexing my 6 drives.
What the frick is up with spotlight on Leopard? I saw so many people having problems I thought I should add to the group and let it be known many many people are hurting with search functions on Leopard.
So do I need to choose between Time Machine and Spotlight? They dont like eachother!

Help. I have tried deleting the hidden Spotlight folder per above suggestions, and now it acts as though Spotlight won't even function.
I have tried to fix THAT problem with the following (http://osxdaily.com/2007/03/22/how-to-completely-disable-spotlight/) and cannot get any of these to work. To be fair, I can't try the Terminal suggestion, as Terminal refuses to allow me to enter my admin password. Weird.
Anyway, two brand new machines, one a fresh-out-of-the-box install and Spotlight broken on both. Besides a reinstall, any ideas how to reinstate my (hidden) Spotlight folders and fix the 'Privacy List Error' I get every time I try to drag a volume to the Spotlight>Privacy tab.
Frustrating having a new machine that won't allow a basic Finder search.

  • Show Item Info doesn't work for folders in Spotlight privacy list?

Hi. I have many images in many folders, and since upgrading to Leopard, none of them show the image dimensions when the "Show Item Info" is checked. As far as I can tell, the only thing difference about this group of files and folders is that it has been added to the privacy list in Spotlight, although, that was also the case under Tiger.

Interesting, I just checked this, since I have my Tiger drive in the Leopard privacy pane, and most of what is there is also on my Leopard drive. You are quite correct: image dimensions for items on the excluded drive don't show up in any Finder view, nor in GetInfo, while the same image on the Leopard drive displays the info just fine. It looks like Finder is taking the exclusion very very literally and not displaying metadata information for items in the excluded list.

  • Clean install and still spotlight problems

I've been having several problems with my system, including problems with spotlight, and so I decided it was time for a clean install. After a clean install to 10.5.2 and then a combo update to 10.5.6, spotlight still is not working correctly. I opened my sys prefs and saw that right after a clean install, there were still settings in my "privacy" list for spotlight from my previous system. I'm assuming then this info is somehow stored locally on each drive? Does that sound right?
Spotlight starting indexing like normal, but it got to the point where it hangs on 7364159 hours remaining. This was the same issue I had before the clean install.
    so, two questions.
1- How can I get spotlight to work? I've tried "spotless" and others and it never seems to work correctly.
2- I've got 4 internal drives, could it be that the drives are two large for indexing? Seems strange but at this point I can't figure out why indexing never finishes.

I really would appreciate any suggestions. I've been really frustrated that spotlight hasn't worked since buying this new Mac Pro.

I did as suggested and enabling them one by one allowed me to index my system drive but as soon as I started on the 2nd drive (seagate 1.5TB) it started doing the same kinds of things. It looks like it's working and then gets to the same point and the number starts to go up and the status doesn't move. I ran lsof | grep mdworkder in the terminal and I got this

  • WiFi problem that won't go away.

I have an iPad 1 32GB WIFI. Still on 5.1.1 (because I can't do anything else). It has only really started having problems in the last few months. I think it's just two years old - so it was still covered by statutory warranty when the issue arose, despite Apple trying to argue to the contrary. Its main problem is the wifi (there are some problems with sound not working and battery life too, but they're less of a problem).
A few months ago, it decided that it just wasn't going to connect to my home wifi network. Full signal strength, but it would just decide to drop out randomly. And when I tried to reconnect, it would tell me that it was unable to connect to the network. Tried everything I read, but nothing changed: turn the actual modem on/off, renewed lease, forget this network, turned the wifi on the iPad on/off, turned airplane mode on/off, tried hard reset, reset network settings - nada. One day, it just randomly decided to start reconnecting and the world was good again.
However, without notice, on Christmas Eve, it decided that it was time to repeat its little issue. Although now it seems to be more annoying. It hasn't connected at all since Christmas Eve (so three days). It will show as having a WIFI full signal strength on the top bar and it will have the network name against Wi-Fi in Settings, but it won't have actually connected because it will just have the spinning loading circle next to the network itself and also next to 'Choose a network...'. Full signal strength though. For the first time though, it has given me a 169.xxx.xxx.xxx IP address (nothing changes this). [Oh, actually, it finally just appeared with a tickmark next to the network name for the first time in days, but the actual internet isn't recognised (there no WIFI signal in the top bar of the iPad and nothing works) - this appears to be because it somehow changed itself from DHCP to Static IP Address].
There doesn't appear to be any problem with my modem/router - iPhone and other computers connect to it without problems.
The spinning circle next to the network when it's "already detected" just makes me want to break the **** thing (I won't , but it's so frustrating).
    What can I do?
Edit: I've already followed the advice on the troubleshooting page (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1398)

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.
