Spotlight reindexing after abnormal power down

My Macbook will occasionally fail to put itself into proper sleep mode, and instead will power itself off entirely. That's a separate issue, but on Leopard this event causes Spotlight to reindex on the next restart. Could be normal in response to an abnormal power down though.

I have the same problem here I called Apple three time for this and engineer told me to reinstall Leopard 1st time I did reinstall Archive and Install and it did not work, the 2nd time I did a clean install and it worked for three days without reindexing and everything worked fine.
Today my iMac hanged and i got the screen that says "You need to restart your computer Hold down the power button for several seconds or press restart... etc."
after restarting the reindexing start again, I noticed when the iMac hangs the reindexing starts.
I have an external drive WD My Book 1TB with about 700GB of data with Time Machine backups. it is reindexing for the past 15 hours and it is estimating indexing time forever.
the external drive was formated with iMac 20" intel based, Partition Map Scheme: Apple Partition Map and it is Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
my drives fats on all the time and the iMac is unusable ATSserver is @74%
any help guys?
Thank you

  • Computer wont boot after long power down z77a-g45

    Hi experts !
    I think i need some help. I own a z77-g45, bios 2.9 + Core I5 3570K +SSD 120 Go intel + ati 7950.
I received this MB one week ago. Since, i try to make it work, no trying OC.
I began with Win8. Installations seemed fine, but after some time letting computer power down, i alwas found myself facing OS unable to boot, even when using older restoration point.
So i decide to go with win7 64 bits.
Once again, all looked like running fine, till a long power down, after that, OS refused to boot, locked on screen with colored windows logo.
I can boot in safe mode. But still couldnt find a faulty service with msconfig a dichotomic way. Os went back during the process..
What i noticed, is that after a long power down, it seems to happen something in the Bios : when the computer starts, it shuts down after one second, and then restarts again. Like if some settings were changed automatically by the motherboard. But I didn't see what the changes are.
    Does that inspire someone ?
    Thanks
    Nicolas

I saw a similar post, where the guy changed the on board lithium battery.
I did the same, and now everything looks fine.
I also did a dual boot install : w7 x64 and w8 x64. That allows me to have access to a boot menu with the ability to easily start w8 in safe mode if needed. I noticed it can help, cause sometimes, the integrated GPU (HD4000) has some side effects.

  • External Hard drives spooling after display power down

When I shut off my MBP thats connected to a 27" thunderbolt display, the external hard drives that I've got connected to the display shut down, then spool back up after everything has been shut down.  How can I get them to stay off?
Current set up: MBP-Thunderbolt display-USB hub-2 external drives
    Thank you!

I decided to try KeepDriveSpinning for my issue and I found that 30 sec was the optimal time to stop my drive spinning up/down. I tried 35 sec and up to 60 and the issue kept occuring. You could try a different time setting if you haven't already.
It does sound like Mountain Lion is the issue in your case.
Sorry, I don't really have the technical skills to help you. I'm really just fumbling around.
On a related point I think my external drive is also the cause of my mac not automatically sleeping. I came across acommand that lists the things that are preventing the mac form sleeping. Maybe, [thats a big maybe], the command might help you with your issue
    pmset -g assertions
and there is a related command that continually logs the things that prevent sleep
    pmset -g assertionslog
If you ran the logging one and then slept the screen and tired accessing your drives it might log something that may help??? Its a long shot though.

  • Love my new ipad.  But after upgrading to ios7 Safari became dodgy.  Now it is frozen in a white screen and nothing will free it.  Everything else on the ipad works fine. I deleted data, history, cookies, etc.  Same problem.  No change after power down.

Everything worked fine on my new ipad.  After I upgraded to ios7 it still worked fine even if it looked very different.  But Safari started acting strangely (it is starting the same thing on my iPhone 4s, too).  Finally, it froze in state with no URL, no keyboard will come up, I can get Safari to close and start, but not actually function.  I went into settings and deleted all the cookies, data, history, and so forth.  Same state.  I powered down the iPad and restarted.  Same state.  I tried a trick were I held down the button to bring up the power down stripe and then holding down the home button.  Same state.
What can I do?  Can I delete Safari and re-install it somehow?  Should I take it to an Apple store?

If powering down with hard reset (press and hold two buttons Power and home) will not give positive results follow that article

  • Kernel panic when I power down my Thunderbolt 1 drive AFTER unmounting it

I've been using a "LaCie d2 USB 3.0/Thunderbolt 4TB" external drive since April 2014, which is connected to my late-2012 iMac via the Thunderbolt 1 port.
When I'm not using the drive, I first unmount it, and then power it down at the mains.
This worked fine until 1 Feb 2015, when I started getting a kernel panic every time I power down the drive - after it's been unmounted.
The issue is 100% reproducible, and it doesn't matter how long I wait between unmounting the drive and powering it down - I've tried waiting several minutes. Powering down the drive ALWAYS causes an instantaneous kernel panic.
I do not get a kernel panic if I turn off the drive as follows: unmount the drive, disconnect the Thunderbolt cable, power down the drive, and then reconnect the Thunderbolt cable (while the drive is turned off).
The panic report text is virtually identical each time this occurs. Below is the most recent example.

  • When downloading a large PDF file, firefox stops after some of file and hangs up. Only way out is to close browser or power down. Internet explorer will complete download of same PDF file.

For example, go to irs.gov and try to download 1040 instructions as a PDF file. Firefox hangs up after part of the file is downloaded, but will not complete the download. The only way out is to close the browser (Firefox). Sometimes the only way out is to power down computer and reboot. I'm running Windows XP Professional. My computer has plenty of memory and disc space, so that is not the problem. When I use Internet Explorer (UGH!) it takes a while, but the very same pdf file will completely download.

  • Why won't my Time capsule power on after shutting itself down?

Why won't my Time capsule power on after shutting itself down?

Suggest that you unplug the Time Capsule from the power cord and let it rest for 15-20 minutes. Verify that the AC wall socket has power by testing another device like a lamp there.
Try to power the Time Capsule back up.
If it will not power up, unfortunately there has likely been a failure in the power supply section of the Time Capsule.
You will need to take the Time Capsule to an Apple store....if you have one near you....or contact Apple Support directly to go over your options.

  • S4 power down after update

After the update for my galaxy S4 last week, my phone will power down on its own.  It has happened at least 10 times in the last 3 days.  Anyone know what the problem is or have any clues how to fix it before I go into the verizon store.

        Ho Doc_Walk22!
Let's figure our what's up with your phone! I'd like to ask some questions in order to troubleshoot. Do you notice if this is happening when performing a specific task or when in a specific application? Please uninstall any task killer applications you may have on the device. And, please try safe mode and monitor the device to see if an application is causing this. Here are the steps: http://support.verizonwireless.com/support/devices/knowledge_base.html/77504/
Also, please remove the SIM card and the battery for about 60 seconds, reattach, and power back on. Let me know how this works out for you, thanks!

  • Tecra R850-117 boots up 5 minutes after power down

After shutting down my Tecra R850-117 it will automatically restart after exactly 5 minutes.
This is unwanted behavior because it drains the battery while I'm not using the laptop and it could also damage the disk carrying it around while running...
Anyone knows what could cause this behavior and how I can stop it? The laptop is 6 months old and I'm only noticing this behavior since the last few weeks. I already noticed the battery would be drained after not using it for a few days (probably due to the same issue?), but never before noticed the unwanted restarts...
Thanks a lot in advance for any useful advice.
    Erik.

A power off on a notebook is not a mechanical power down, but a state where the system can still be woken up by a few events (like wake on Lan/keyboard). One of these events is the RTC timer. For a reason that is still unknown (at least to me) this timer caused my notebook to restart five minutes after shutting down my Linux sessions with a "power off".
As I see it now the RTC timer was set at every shutdown. To what value it was set I don't know for sure, but looking at the data I was able to figure out it looks like the RTC timer would be set to a moment in the past (being the time the system just booted). Maybe this resulted in the timer thinking it had missed an alarm, and restarting as a result?
I wasn't able to get this issue solved, but I was at least able to find a work around: As soon as Linux boots it now automatically sets the RTC timer to a date two years ahead. Not a beautiful solution, but well... It works...

I have iPad air, screen freezes after FaceTime call and cannot get back to home screen, have to power down and turn back on to get back to home screen.  What am I doing wrong?

    Hi RWD2,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
To resolve your issue with Facetime freezing when you end a call, I would try the first three steps in the article below.
iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3281
    Resolution
If a single application is not responding or stops responding when it opens, you can force it to close.
If the device is unresponsive or if certain controls aren't working as expected, restart your device.
If the device remains unresponsive or does not turn on (or power on), reset your device.
If you are using Wi-Fi, it may be helpful to try these troubleshooting steps as well:
iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1398?viewlocale=en_US
Reset network settings by tapping Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
Note: This will reset all network settings including previously connected Wi-Fi networks and passwords
iOS and OS X: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4199
I hope this information helps ....

  • After power down and a cold restart, I automatically restart in my Administrator Account.  Running 10.8.4 with one Administrator account, one user account and one guest account.  Recently downloaded and installed 3rd party software (Panorama).

After power down and a cold restart, I automatically restart in my Administrator Account.  Running 10.8.4 with one Administrator account, one user account and one guest account.  Recently downloaded and installed 3rd party software (Panorama).  Installation required that I create a super user named Other with root privileges. I did so and successfully installed the 3rd party software.  I powered down a few days late and when I restarted, I went automatically to my Administrator account with no login password required.  I deleted the Other account, powered down and restarted with the same result - opened in Administrator.   I then followed the steps to disable root user, powered down, cold restart - same result, opened in Administrator account.
