Spotlight reindexing

When I go to reindex my Macintosh HD under Spotlight > Privacy it says that it will exclude this location from Spotlight searches. I was told that if I am to reindex my hard drive then my computer would show the correct amount of data usage under the About This Mac tab (it currently shows disproportionate storage to what is actually been used - says I have 120gb of apps when I only have 11).
Is there any other way to make the About This Mac > Storage tab show the correct amount of storage used? If not, do I need to worry about excluding Macintosh HD from Spotlight searches?
Thank you

That is correct. That is the way to force a reindexing of Macintosh HD.
When  Macintosh HD is prevented  from  searching , the existing index will be deleted automatically.
That will force the OS X to create a new index.
When you add Macintosh HD to the Privacy pane of Spotlight
You will get a dialog box  like this. Click OK.

  • Spotlight reindex, mds crash

    Hello,
I was searching a lot of stuff and I didn't found any resonable solution.
It starts about the last update to 10.9.1. (17.12.).
Main problem is like this: every time I open a lid on my AriMac, spotlight is starting reindexation.
I found some lines in console about mds crash report with information in it:
    Exception Type:  EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGSEGV)
    Exception Codes: EXC_I386_GPFLT
    Exception Type:  EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGSEGV)

mds is the metadata server that is used primarily by Spotlight. That file probably appeared because mds crashed. It's possible the file should have been invisible but lost its invisible status, but of this I'm not sure. If you look in the console log for the date and time when that file was created you may find a log entry. If not in the console log perhaps in one of the other logs such as the crash reporter logs.
    Kappy,
I searched for mds-crash-state in the console, system, and other logs, and could find no reference to it at all. However, searching for just mds yielded the following on July 10, 2008, in the crashreporter.log:
    Thu Jul 10 08:04:30 2008 crashdump[3522]: crashdump started
    Thu Jul 10 08:04:33 2008 crashdump[3522]: Started writing crash report to: /Library/Logs/CrashReporter/mds.crash.log
    Thu Jul 10 08:04:36 2008 crashdump[3522]: Finished writing crash report to: /Library/Logs/CrashReporter/mds.crash.log
The file called mds-crash-state in my Macintosh HD folder has a creation date of July 10, 2008, 8:04 AM in Get-Info, so the above is almost certainly connected to that event. But there is no indication that it exited abnormally, as far as I can see. There are no more entries on the 10th at all, and no more references in any of the logs to mds, so this appears to be a one-time event? The file I have detected is a "state" file, not a log file, and it is stored in a different location.
As always, thanks for your help.

  • Spotlight reindexing often

not sure why, but spotlight seems to be reindexing every few minutes....haven't added any new software
wife had an issue with a bad CompactFlash card downloading images from her camera, but can't see the connection between the two (if there is one)
    any ideas?

    Hello:
Take a look at system preferences>spotlight.  Time Machine is automatically excluded, I think, but indexing external hard drives can cause what you describe (I exclude both of mine from indexing).

  • Spotlight reindexing after abnormal power down

My Macbook will occasionally fail to put itself into proper sleep mode, and instead will power itself off entirely. That's a separate issue, but on Leopard this event causes Spotlight to reindex on the next restart. Could be normal in response to an abnormal power down though.

I have the same problem here I called Apple three time for this and engineer told me to reinstall Leopard 1st time I did reinstall Archive and Install and it did not work, the 2nd time I did a clean install and it worked for three days without reindexing and everything worked fine.
Today my iMac hanged and i got the screen that says "You need to restart your computer Hold down the power button for several seconds or press restart... etc."
after restarting the reindexing start again, I noticed when the iMac hangs the reindexing starts.
I have an external drive WD My Book 1TB with about 700GB of data with Time Machine backups. it is reindexing for the past 15 hours and it is estimating indexing time forever.
the external drive was formated with iMac 20" intel based, Partition Map Scheme: Apple Partition Map and it is Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
my drives fats on all the time and the iMac is unusable ATSserver is @74%

  • Spotlight reindexing extremely slow

    Hi,
I have used MainMenu to run some maintenance on my MacBook (yes, I know that this probably is not necessary, but this is just me). The last thing the MainMenu does is rebuild the Spotlight index. Until today, no problems.
Now, however, the reindexing has lasted for hours, the process is about 75% complete, but Spotlight tells me it still has some 28 hours to go!
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Juha

Spotlight was just going thru a rough spot, it has finished now.

  • Spotlight reindexing on bootup

Can anyone tell me why Spotlight would suddenly want to reindex my startup disc and an offboard drive from scratch every time I start or restart my iMac? I had two hard freezes recently while a Bittorrent client (Transmission) and Toast 8 were running. Fixes to once again make the indexes persistent would be appreciated.

For testing purposes, see what happens with spotlight in a new account. If it's OK there then look in
Users/yourname/Library/LaunchAgents . Is there anything there that doesn't belong?
All I seem to have there is several com.apple.folderactions.... .plists
(And also check in System Preferences>Log in items.)
Then go to Activity Monitor in Utilities and see if that process, whatever it may be, is still running there.
Spotlight might be getting hung up on one of these, if they exist.

  • Macbook hanging: ctl_enqueuedata, ALF ALERT, Spotlight reindex

    Hi
I have a May 2006 Macbook [1] running 10.5.1. For the last fortnight or so I've been getting random "hangs" which can only be fixed with a power off/on restart. The trackpad still works but clicking on things doesn't do anything; I can't quit running apps nor Apple -> restart.
More often than not Spotlight has to reindex once I've restarted. After reindexing Spotlight often doesn't find applications -- I cmd-space, type "firef" and it doesn't find Firefox. Typing the full name doesn't help.
Browsing through system.log it seems that I often get these errors right before it hangs up:
    Jan 25 20:32:25 my-macbook kernel[0]: ctl_enqueuedata: mallocpacketinternal(8) failed
    Jan 25 20:32:25 my-macbook kernel[0]: ALF ALERT: sockwallcntlreleasecachedpath ctl_enqueuedata rts err 55
It's not always fatal -- I've seen the lines logged once or twice without the machine dying on me.
So, any ideas? A few other people have posted with similar errors but they mostly seem related to additional hardware drivers (mice, that sort of thing). I don't have anything particularly fruity installed -- just the usual Firefox, TextMate, etc user applications. No additional hardware, save for a USB HDD that's always been fine.
    Here's hoping,
    Mark

Did you get any luck with this?

  • Continuous Spotlight reindexing of Time Machine/Capsule backup

I have recently noticed that Spotlight tries to reindex the mounted image of the backup on the desktop and that prevents the machine from going to sleep, etc., as I have 113 GB of data being backed up and it is done wirelessly to a Time Capsule. So, anyway to prevent it from doing this? Just using Spotlight preferences to do this doesn't work as the next time it mounts for backup the reindexing starts again.
    It is very annoying.

I have done that a myriad times, but all of a sudden the problem went away on its own. For a week or two it was really bad.
The Privacy tab solution is a temporary one until the .dmg file gets unmounted, then it is like you never used the privacy tab to exclude that volume because the next time the volume gets mounted it is like starting from scratch. That's why I made the original post.

  • Spotlight reindexing drives when booting from Leopard to Tiger & vice versa

    Hi,
I have two HDs, one with Leopard and the other with Tiger. Whenever I boot into the other HD I find that Spotlight re-indexes my two 750GB music & data drives which takes some time. Why is this? Do they use different versions of the index?
It's a bit of a pain as I have to boot into both OS's every day and cannot use Spotlight while the indexing is running and it also slows the system down. I do not want to turn indexing off as I need it during my work.
    Any help/ideas?

    yes, they do.

I don't think there is any way around this. may I ask why you have to use both tiger and leopard?
you can try using some spotlight alternatives such as [EasyFind|http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/11706] when you are using one of the two OS ( either tiger or leopard) and spotlight for the other os.

  • Spotlight reindexing EVERY TIME !

I have an issue with Spotlight - especially when I fire up my Firewire drive (2 partitions) and the Bootcamp partition - it seems to index them everytime I turn it on - I understand it's meant to do that a bit but it seems to start from scratch and takes yonks to get it going....is it easier to turn Spotlight off completely ? I've tried taking out the stuff not needed to search, but it doesn't affect the indexing.

    Hi Paul
Look at this article I just found from [AppleInsider|http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/07/11/07/firstbuilds_of_mac_os_x_10_5_1_pack_over_two_dozenfixes.html] looks like maybe a fix in 10.5.1....?

how to delete spotlight data in macbook air ?

Open system preferences and go to Spotlight then to the privacy tab and add the Macintsoh HD to the list for "Prevent Spotlight from searching these locations. That will remove all spotlght data. Then you should highlight that entry and click the Minus ( - ) sign at the bottom to have spotlight reindex your drive.

  • Spotlight can't find iPhoto 6 keywords

    Hi,
I've got Tiger 10.4.4 installed with iPhoto 6. I've keyworded some of my photos in iPhoto but I can't search on them with Spotlight. To attempt to address this I've tried the following with no joy:
    - Added my hard disk to the privacy window in Spotlight preferences and removed it.
    - Renamed the ~/Pictures/iPhoto Library/iPhoto.ipspot file to force a rebuild (which it did).
    - Reindexed the ~Pictures folder in spotlight via Terminal
    - Added a dummy keyword to all photos then forced a Spotlight reindex
After all this it still isn't working. Anyone with any ideas as to how to remedy this situation?
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

For what it's worth, Payton, my Spotlight still functions the same as yours did, and has for as long as 10.4 has been around: double-clicking a photo from either of Spotlight's results areas - separate window or menu bar list - opens that photo in iPhoto, maximised, if Spotlight knows that photo to be in iPhoto (obvious from it being located in your iPhoto Library folder). Preview is also my default application for all images.
Note that selecting the same image in the Finder will open it with the default application and not iPhoto; but then as we all know by now, don't tamper with files in the iPhoto Library folder.
This Spotlight behaviour makes sense to me, as having Spotlight open an iPhoto image in anything other than iPhoto is going directly against the don't tamper adage. Say you open an iPhoto image from Spotlight into Preview; there you make colour changes, crop it a little, and resave; you've instantly 'tampered' with the iPhoto library as iPhoto no longer reflects the actual state of that file. You may simply be interested in harmlessly viewing the image but as iPhoto is designed to be the 'guardian of all images it contains' it's logical for it to step in when one of its photos is being checked out.
Having said all that, I can't suggest why your Spotlight-result images are now opening with Preview..! Despite my post above, where I fixed my "(i)Photos not showing up in Spotlight" problem, I've only just noticed that the problem has in fact returned, and Spotlight has 'forgotten' ALL keyword data up until about that point where I had fixed it (and had it working...). Only photos added since then show up in searches, despite using the same keywords etc. I despair, sometimes...
Just a thought, but I presume you didn't also delete the iPhoto.ipspot file earlier, did you?

  • Spotlight hang on file and recreates it when deleted

After I upgraded from pb to macbook I've had a problem with spotlight reindexing all the time. After a while I found that spotlight hangs on the file Addressbook.data.
    I have tried:
-spotless and delete the spotlight files, no luck
    -onyx, no luck
    -Yasu, no luck
-Delete the file and the dir, no luck
-change read/write properties on the file, no luck
-Drag the folder into privay, spotlight still reindexes the file and the folder dissapears from privacy
I'm going nuts here, can anyone help me?

Indeed, i was wondering where those files went. Previously i was using firefox v6, and when i stream media files like youtube or 4shared, I'm able to capture the files using download helper & bitcomet in form of flv or mp3 format respectively without having to manually download it.
So it means after streaming, and i'm able to save the media files without having to download it, it has already been stored somewhere right? Now, where could there be.
Unfortunately after upgrade to firefox v7 & the bitcomet to further version, I no longer able to capture the media files. I do not know whether it's about setting or that firefox (or bitcomet & download helper) do not allow direct saving from played streamed files
Imagine, it's quit depressing that u had to wait for the file to stream in order to view it, and then wait another for downloading in case u decide to like it. Whereas both the streamed file and the downloaded one is the same exact file with the same size & qualities.

  • Negative Effects of Turning off Spotlight on Time Machine Drive

My external WD HD used exclusively for TM was going into what seemed to be an infinite spotlight reindexing loop after I upgraded to 10.6.8.  The only way I have been able to ge it to stop was to select that drive under spotlight privacy settings.  Does anyone know of any negative effects of doing this, other than the obvious negative of not being able to use spotlight on my TM backups?
    Many thanks!

@sanjampet; What does a link to Xsan servers have to do with Time Machine?

Read Pondini's excellent TM articles; http://pondini.org/TM/Home.html
Spotlight can't read the TM volume; it should be excluded as you have done.

  • Spotlight out of control

    Hi all,
Spotlight seems to reindex the entire hard drive with each restart. Often takes 20 minutes; slows the machine down to a crawl; cranks the CPU temperature to 170F, while the fan stays on for the entire time.
Should Spotlight reindex with each restart? Can I set this to 'daily' (at least)?
    Thanks!

Ray... Could you clarify that? Where did you get that repair info?
