Spotlight's "Show All In Finder" Error

When clicking "Show all in Finder" from Spotlight search, I continually end up with a blank Finder window showing up. Solutions?

I am pretty sure this worked that way pre-Lion.
Nevertheless, in spotlight if you want to find the location of the file (how do you do that) - a right-click option "Open Location" would be a great feature.  I mean what is the point searching for the file, seeing it, but have no idea where to copy it from, or remove it or otherwise?

  • Spotlight "Show all in Finder" not working

    Hello
I have a mac book pro 2.7 Ghz i& with 16 GB RAM
    1) Whenever I search for something in spotlight, when I click on "Show all in Finder", nothing happens
Also, When I check the preferrences, I have some yellow triangles for the keyboadr shortcut
I've reindex everything but same issues comes up.
    2) Also, it seems that it only searches on local drive, not on my external drives as well, even though they are also indexed.
    Thank you

Got me stumped there.  My understanding (limited) is that the Apple Events daemon works for a while when freshly launched, but for reasons unknown it gets bolloxed after a certain number of calls.  No error messages appear in Console, which makes it especially hard to track down.  If yours gets hosed immediately, that's not the usual pattern.
iPhoto and iTunes use Apple Events quite a lot.... if you have either of those apps running, you might see what happens without them.  Failing that, see what happens when no applications are running.  Finally, see what login items are being fired up (System Preferences => Users and Groups => Login Items) and disable those.
This bug only crops up on a small number of Macs, and as far as I know nobody's been able to track down what triggers it.

  • Spotlight does not open a finder window when i choose Show all in finder menu?

I have a significant number of files in my Macbook Air. A lot of them are research papers and medical literature.
About a month ago I updated the operating system from snow Leopard to mountain Lion and I had no reasons to complain except a smaller battery time.
Since then I installed every OS update.
After the last update, a few days ago, Spotlight does not open a finder window when i choose Show all in finder menu.
Spotlight continues to work properly if I write a name or expression in spotlight in a finder window but not in the upper left corner at the menu bar
    As this been described yet?
    Thank you in advance
    Miguel Tavares

I had the same problem yesterday after performing a clean install of Mountain Lion (10.8.2) on my MacBook Pro.
I resolved the problem by booting from the Mountain Lion Recovery Partition and then running Disk Utilty (Repair) for the primary disk on which Mountain Lion is installed.  It identified (and repaired) many permissions issues...
When I rebooted following the repair, Spotlight worked again properly -- including the "Show All in Finder" function.

When i click on 'Show all in Finder' after searching for anything on spotlight, NOTHING happens! NO Finder window opens up and the spotlight dropdown menu just shuts! Please help!

I'm having the same problem in other places as well, for example when i downloaded Easyfind right now, clicking the small magnifying glass button on the right of the file name (shown below) would usually open up finder highlighting the file, but now nothing happens when i click on that button!
Is there a solution for this, as this was a very useful feature which i used ALL the time?

  • Cannot print pdf on my mac 10.9.4 shows all types of error

I can't print at all, it shows all kinds of errors, some say "no page was selected" if is a PDF from internet , when is from a down laod say error document cannot be printed and it quits by itself, say internal error and shuts down acrobat or it says go to acrobat and sign the agreement (which I did already 100 times) I downloaded version 11.0.07, I don't know if this is the problem, I went to apple store, they told me contact acrobat cus it was them, and I called hp to reset printer, they said it was acrobat reader.

Do you have at least 4 GBs of RAM installed and at least 20 GBs of free space on your hard drive.
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Picky Spotlight - not showing all my files

Has anyone had this problem? Whereby Spotlight is not showing a lot of files I search for? I had a look at the privacy settings and the only thing there is Roxio Converted Items.
The file I was looking for in particular was a .Pages file, which I located in a sub-folder of my documents folder, but Spotlight refused to find it!
Is there anything I can try?

    Hello Ben:
Files beginning with a period are usually hidden files to UNIX based systems. I am sorry I am away from my Macs so I cannot give you a pointer to displaying those files. Search help and the support part of this site for further information.
I also found that when I do a "find" I usually see what I am looking for by adding +system files+ to the search criteria.

  • Getting Spotlight "Show All" window to only show emails

In Spotlight's "Show All" window (the same one you get when you Command-F from the Finder) there's a way to select what kind of things you want to see. However, for some reason the "Kind" list doesn't include "Mail Messages". It has "Applications", "Documents", "Folders", etc. but nothing to find emails. I notice that if I choose kind "Other" and type "Mail" in the box, I do see email messages, but it's odd that emails aren't in the list. Anybody know if it's possible to modify the set of things that shows up in the "Kind" list so I can find emails more easily?

Weird. My "Kind" list is Any, Applications, Documents, Folders, Images, Movies, Music, PDF, Presentations, Text, Other.
I tried enabling and disabling various kinds in the Spotlight preferences pane. Although that changed the set of results (as you'd expect) it had no effect on the set of items shown in the "Kind" list.
    Wonder what's happening here?

  • Choosing Spotlights "Show All" reveals nothing

Once I plug in a file to search for under Spotlight, and then I chose "Show All" nothing happens.
    Any suggestions?

I have the same problem. Searching the drive works fine from the Spotlight corner, but when I click "Show All" the Finder-like window remains blank with the spinning wheel spinning forever. The Mac's built-in help function of course does not contain any help for this type of trouble-shooting (very weird post above).

  • Spotlight not showing files

Have brand new iMac running 10.8.2.
    All going great except:
1 Spotlight will list files I search for very quickly top right but I can't get it to 'Show All in Finder', it just does nothing. It means I can't actually locate anything.
2 I've noticed similar issue on downloads on my Safari (6.0.2), it will list the downloads but will also not reveal where they are in the finder.
    Any help much appeciated...

Spotlight is showing them just fine—for me, anyway.
It's the "Show All in Finder" command that it won't do. I see the immediate drop-down list and can open from that list, but if what I'm looking for didn't make it onto that initial list, I'm stuck.
If Alfred will work, then at least I have a temporary work-around.
Sorry if I wasn't clear before and thank you so much for the quick responses!!!

The iTunes application should be installed on the system drive. You may need to repair iTunes to fix that error regarding a missing .exe.
To organize your library properly see Make a split library portable.
If you don't have a working version of the library that can be transformed into a portable shape I have tools and techniques that can repair the broken links.

  • Finder doesn't show all files

When I add new photos to iPhoto, they do not appear as a file or item in Finder Documents list. I thought Finder was supposed to show all files and items that you create?

santra, use EasyFind or Find File instead. BY default, Apple's own Finder/spotlight doesn't search everywhere and doesn't find everything (Mac fanboys will tell you this is a feature and is so intelligent that some people can't understand how smart it is; I prefer to think of it as a defect).
    Easyfind is here: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/8707
    Find File is here: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/10906315
I hope this helps you to find all your stuff.

  • How to find all exclamation marks/error photos in library

    Hi,
Thanks to the forums, I know how to get rid of the exclamation marks (rebuilding, etc). But first, I want to locate all the dead links. The only way I'll know right now if a thumbnail is dead is if I double click on it and see the exclamation mark. Is there a way to filter them all out? Otherwise, I have over 5,000 pictures, and I definitely don't want to doubleclick through all of them to check.
Basically, I want to identify the error files first before I rebuild the library. Otherwise, I won't know which photos I'm missing in the new library, right?
For example, currently, photo #123 brings up the ugly exclamation mark. I can see #123 thumbnail, so I know which photo it is, but iphoto can't find the original link (I probably deleted it from the root folder a while ago). If I rebuild the library, I'm guessing the new library will know not to include #123, since it can't find the original file. This means if I didn't know #123 was there to begin with, I wouldn't know it was missing from the new library, right? In this case, I know I'm missing #123, and I want to make sure I find it first before rebuilding. So, is there a way to make iphoto just show all the problem files?

    No.
If you rebuild with iPhoto Library Manager it will list the files it cannot find.

  • Spotlight Show All Like in TIger?

In Tiger when I did a spotlight search and clicked show all from the menu it would open a nice list of all the documents still categorized by type. In Leopard I just get one big list and can only choose between contents or name and location. Am I missing something? I know I can do a file find and select the type but it was so much easier in Tiger. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

The best you can do is after you select "Show All" change the view of the window to List view and then click the Kind column.

  • Spotlight Show All Results At The Bottom!

In Spotlight, Show All Results used to be at the top. After typing in the query in the Spotlight field, I used to tap on the Up arrow and get right to Show All Results. Quite fast with the keyboard, without even touching the mouse.
Now I have to go to the bottom of the list, either with the mouse or with the down key. S-l-o-w-l-y. Irritating to say the least.
Is there a way to change this and bring Show All Results to the top? Or at least a shortcut to go right to the bottom? Oh that would be nice, just keeping in mind the poor power users… :-)

The result appears at the center unless there are multiple results on the screen and in this case Firefox doesn't scroll to center the next result.

  • Where's the "show all" option in Spotlight?

Where's the "show all" option in Spotlight? Currently I only see a list of the first few things Spotlight has found. Where's the option to show all of them in the Finder? I can't find it.

    Hello there, Tom in London.
The following Knowledge Base article offers up some great information in regard to the Spotlight preferences in Yosemite:
    OS X Yosemite: Spotlight preferences
    Search Results pane
Choose which categories appear in Spotlight search results: Select the categories you want to include, deselect those you don’t.
By default, Spotlight results include Spotlight Suggestions, Bing Web Searches, conversions, documents, folders, music, and more.
If you don’t want your Spotlight search queries and Spotlight Suggestions usage data sent to Apple, you can turn off Spotlight Suggestions by deselecting the Spotlight Suggestions and Bing Web Searches checkboxes. You can also turn off Location Services for Spotlight Suggestions in Security & Privacy preferences. If you turn off Location Services on your Mac, your precise location will not be sent to Apple. For detailed instructions and information, see About Spotlight Suggestions.
Change the order of results: Drag the categories until they’re in the order you want.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Pedro.
