Spotlight search for Address Book contact results in import query?

This bug is happening frequently lately, wheby I perform a Spotlight seach for a contact that is in my Address Book, and then when I select the contact in the search results, Address Book is selected and the app asks me "Are you sure you want to import 1 card?"
Anybody ever see this problem or how to resolve it?
Thanks.

Peter, that is not a solution -- try selecting the same contact again from spotlight and you'll get the same "Import" dialog box, asking you what you want to do.
The expected behavior from Address Book is to open the existing contact.
No other application does this from Spotlight that I'm aware of, and after 7 years of OS X, this is still very, very annoying.
I wish there were a fix -- I'm activley looking and will report back.

  • I suddenly cannot search my Address Book (Contacts) in Mac Mail.  Seems to be "stuck" on one contact

I suddenly cannot search my Mac Mail Contacts.  Normally, when I type in a name, it immediately comes right up to that contact.  Only way I can see a particular contact I want is to double click on that name.  I want to be able to see it to the right of the list of all my contacts on the left.  Thanks in advance for your help.  I've tried quitting the application, but it's not helping.  I've also checked and all my Software Updates are up to date.

Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive & clear caches.)
Not exactly clear, but in Address Books tool bar, is Groups & Names shown, or just Names?

  • Missing Address Book Contacts

Hi, I have somehow inadvertently lost all the contacts in my address book. Fortunately, I backed them up, oh about 15 months ago.
I used SPOTLIGHT to search for address book, and found a file in Library/application support/address book/AddressBook.data.beforesave. It's 3.3M in size, so I think my addresses are in there. But I can't seem to import them or revert to address book backup. Anybody know how I can get the addresses out of this file back into Address book.
    Thanks,

In your address book on your device, if you press the Menu Key and go to Filter. Are any of the filters selected? If so remove the checks from them then test.
    Hope this helps.

  • Spotlight search for contact does not open contact itself

    Hello everybody
    I have the following problem:
if I search for an addressbook contact using spotlight it immediately comes up with a credible result. As I hit enter on the result, the address book app opens. So far everything is ok. Now what does NOT happen, is that only the address book app opens, it does however not show the contact for which I have originally searched and on which I have pressed enter. Instead I'm having to do another search in the address book search in order to display the actual contact.
In the spotlight options I have enabled address book searches, in fact nothing is disabled in there.
I also have the current lion software and I'm using a 13" MacBook Air i5.
    Can anyone help?
    Cheers!
    Ben
PS: I know there's another thead that deals with this problem, however it's quite old and now there's iCloud (which I use) so it might be different...

go into settings>general>restrictions and disable facetime.BOOM

  • How to Export Address Book contacts as CSV file for Gmail?

    Hi
I wish to export some of my Address Book contacts towards Gmail (which i use through the web interface for now) but I don't want to export vcards as i don't trust big brother Google with all the other data (snail mail, phone numbers, birthdays, etc).
I have tried to do the export through Address Book but found no CSV export option.
I've searched the forum for an answer, but to no avail. Some other (paying) websites claim to offer solutions but the "pay before you see" deters me from using them.
Any tip on how to do this would be greatly appreciated. Scripts and software also welcome, if shareware/freeware.
    Cheers,
    FMN

Thanks for your answer, but gmail's help specifically states one can import contacts in CSV format and i was looking for a simple batch solution.
Here is a link to the relevant gmail page (might be in French - am not a "Froguette" for nothing ;)) about importing:
    <http://mail.google.com/support/bin/topic.py?topic=28647>
and the one about importing addresses as CSV files:
    So my question still stands.

  • Address Book contacts not showing up in Mail

I'm unable to access my address book contacts from Mail.  The wheel on the right side of the recipient box spins but never finds the contact or group I'm searching.  Can anyone help?

Please follow these directions to delete the Mail "sandbox" folder.
    Back up all data.
Triple-click the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.mail" selected. If it does, move the selected folder — not just its contents — to the Desktop. Leave the Finder window open for now.
Log out and log back in. Launch Mail and test. If the problem is resolved, you may have to recreate some of your Mail settings. You can then delete the folder you moved and close the Finder window. If you still have the problem, quit Mail again and put the folder back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Post your results.
Caution: If you change any of the contents of the sandbox, but leave the folder itself in place, Mail may crash or not launch at all. Deleting the whole sandbox will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • POP3 Mail & Address Book contacts have gone!

I recently did some housekeeping on my Mum's iBook G4 (OSX 10.4.10), part of which was purchasing and installing SpamSieve into Mail. This all went fine. Today she said all the mail in her POP3 inbox had gone, she couldn't send/receive and all her address book contacts had gone (Except hers and Apples).
I've got the iBook now and have noticed that her account type in Mail has somehow changed to a .Mac account (did I somehow do this, or did she???). This is obviously the root of the problem as the
email address now has '@mac.com' appended to the end and the incoming mail server is now 'mail.mac.com' and the outgoing is 'smtp.mac.com:heremailaddress' which is all wrong. I'm unable to change the account type back to POP or the incoming mail server from 'mail.mac.com' (it's greyed out) back to what it was.
I have now created a second account with the correct POP settings and have received in all unread email, but the read email messages have gone. I am unable to send as the new correct pop account is only offered the incorrect outgoing server ('smtp.mac.com:heremailaddress').
Having read several post on this forum, I feel the Mail/Address Book issues are connected and that maybe the application(s) database(s) have been corrupted. I've tried the Address Book remedy at http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5248351&#5248351 but this does nothing. The 'user'>Library>Mail folder shows the two accounts as two separate folders. The recently recreated account folder has the new unread messages in the 'INBOX.mbox folder, but the older account folder (which now has 'MAC-' added to the front of its name) only has 'info.plist' in a 'INBOX.imapmbox' folder!
I don't believe any back-ups are available. Can anyone help me restore her old unread mail, and possibly her address book contacts?
I've also just noticed that SpamSieve does not launch as it should when I launch Mail, even though It was purchased and the scripts installed correctly.

Didn’t you make a backup prior to the housekeeping?
I don’t know why would Spotlight find contacts that are gone from Address Book (if that’s what you mean), but as far as Mail goes, under some circumstances (e.g. lack of available disk space, filesystem corruption, repeated crashes), Mail may discard the current ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist preferences file and create a new one. This file is where all the account settings are stored. As a result, all the non-.Mac account settings (but not the messages themselves) are lost. If you had a .Mac account, its settings would appear to have been preserved because Mail would set up that account automatically using the System Preferences > .Mac settings.
What’s the capacity and space available on the startup disk? Take a look at the comments about disk space in the following article, in case they apply to you:
Problems from insufficient RAM and free hard disk space
Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what’s it all about?
After having fixed all the filesystem issues, if any, and ensuring that there’s enough space available on the startup disk (a few GB, plus the space needed to make a backup copy of the Mail folder), quit Mail if it’s running, and make a backup copy of the ~/Library/Mail folder, e.g. by dragging it to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down, just in case something else goes wrong while trying to solve the problem. This is where all your mail is stored.
    You have three options now:
    (1) Restore ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist from a backup if you have one. Mail shouldn’t be running while you do this.
    (2) Set up your mail accounts again (you may want to quit Mail and trash the new com.apple.mail.plist first to start over). If given the option to import existing mailboxes or something like that, don’t. Just enter the account information and Mail will automagically rediscover the data in ~/Library/Mail/ when done. You’ll also have to re-configure most of your settings in Mail > Preferences. For spam-related security reasons, the first thing you should do is go to Preferences > Viewing and disable Display remote images in HTML messages if it’s enabled.
    (3) Mail may have renamed the old preferences file to com.apple.mail.plist.saved. If that’s the case, you may try trashing the new com.apple.mail.plist and renaming the old com.apple.mail.plist.saved back to com.apple.mail.plist. Again, be sure Mail isn’t running while doing this. Given the circumstances, there exists the possibility that com.apple.mail.plist.saved became corrupt, but that often is not the case and the settings can usually be restored by just renaming the file back to com.apple.mail.plist.
As a side effect of re-creating com.apple.mail.plist, Mail might rename Outbox (which is where messages waiting to be sent are stored) to Delivered. The name of that mailbox is actually a misnomer, as it would contain messages (if any) that couldn’t be delivered for some reason. You can delete that mailbox if you wish.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. That is, ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder, i.e. /Users/username/Library.

  • Since I moved to iCloud I can't Edit or Delete Address Book Contacts using my MacBook Pro

Is not funny at all, everything was fine using Mobile Me but since I switch to iCloud I can't Edit or Delete my Address Book Contacts using my MacBook Pro or my MacPro.
In my MacBook Pro, i open Address Book and on the left I have te list of all contacts, on the right the selected contact informations, below I only have "Add Contact" or "Share", my friend have "Edit" instead of "Add Contact".
If I click on "Add Contact" this is the result:
Are you sure you want to import 1 card? 1 card is a duplicate and will be updated.
Everything fine using my iPhone or the website.
    Apple, what's going on?

Here is some information and instructions from Apple:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3998
Please note that iCloud is geared towards being an instantaneous (and in some cases temporary) parking place for various things with iDevices; the access and useability from a computer is more difficult and, for most things, has to be done via the website icloud.com.

  • Tags or keywords for Address Book?

I'm surprised to find that Address Book doesn't seem to offer any sort of tags, keywords, or categories for contacts. I've searched the web and can't seem to find any information about this, or a plugin that do for Address Book what MailTags does for Apple Mail. Does anyone know of something to help???

I mostly use groups for both those purposes. I also use the company field as a sort of tag, since very few of my contacts are companies rather than individual. So I have contacts with builder or plumber or electrician in the company field - but this won't work for you if you need that field for company names. The other field you can use is the notes field; you could put several tags in, and you wouldn't need any special separator as search will find them.
The advantage of groups, for me, is that you only have to type the tag or category once and you can so quickly isolate all those in the group. A contact can of course be in multiple groups; indeed a group can be in a group.

  • Can iPhone 4 contacts overwrite MacBook Address Book contacts?

Can someone please help me, perhaps Allan Sampson? My problem is that I somehow have >2,000 duplicate contacts in my MacBook's Address Book. Though I do backups, I've added dozens of new contacts to my iPhone where, so far, I do not have any duplicates. Basically, I need to somehow, if possible, overwrite all of my desktop contacts with the contacts from my iPhone. I've searched in the Apple Discussions for 2 hours and can't find an answer to this. The closest Google hit I found was http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2111565 but it did not work for me.
    Some background:
    - OS X 10.6.6
    - iTunes ver 10.1.2
    - iPhone OS 4.2.1
    - I am syncing iPhone with MobileMe account
    - iTunes is also syncing contacts with MobileMe
    - Under iPhone "Info" tab in iTunes, it is NOT set to Sync Address Book Contacts
    - This is not the first time I am syncing.
    - I called Apple Support. Zero help.
    - I can't use the Address Book "Look for Duplicates..." feature because I have a few dozen contacts that it will combine that I need to keep separate.
Could anyone possibly help me with this? My only other option is to manually delete >2,000 duplicate contacts...that would take me several months.
    Thank you!

I tried this http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1472736 , specifically Allan Sampson's suggestion (below), but it did not work either.
"The sync process for contact information, calendar events, and bookmarks with an iPhone is bidirectional with the supported application on your computer.
Enter at least one contact in the Address Book application and one calendar event in iCal on your Mac before syncing. Pay attention to any message provided when syncing such as merging data. If you are unsure about any such message provided, cancel the sync until you are sure."

  • Spotlight searchs for English apps and not Spanish

    Hi,
Some macs I own have a very estrange problem. A can use spotlight for finding everything but no Spaniard words for Applications. for instance, if I use spotlight for searching "address book", no problem at all but if I search for "agenda", which is the Spaniard word for address book it won't find it in applications.
This only happens in spotlight, but not in finder, where all the apps have their Spaniard name correctly and of course I have the system in Spanish.
    How can I solve this?
    Thanks

    Hi All,
I cannot seem to sync my address book contacts in icloud. I have search for some info online which suggested that I go into my address book preferences and set it up to icloud but this option does not show in the preferences.
    Any advice?
    thanks.

You need Mac OS X 10.7.4 or later to use iCloud and have the iCloud system preferences pane.

  • Printing Address Book Contacts

I’m trying to print the address book contacts by going to print>address book>style: lists, but the results are poor. I could not adjust the margins or width of the column and the labels overlap the content. I would like to print all the information including the notes. I went through troubleshooting of the fields in every card but that didn’t help. I tried Entourage but didn’t like the result. Is there any other third party software or plug-in that can help me with this task? Somebody here suggested to drag the contacts into Numbers and format it in that application but I could not get the note field in. Thank you for any thoughts and suggestions.

  • IPad Address Book (Contacts.app) crash on launch

my iPad address book (Contacts.app) crashes on launch
this problem also affects me when trying to send emails: the email app works fine for reading emails, but as soon as I write a new email and go to the "To" or "cc" or "bcc" boxes to input a recipient address, mail crashes, presumably because the Address book is being accessed at this stage.
I can see that the above can be an Address book (Contacts.app) problem.
Am running pre iOS 4.2 version of the iOS (likely the most up to date pre recent update), i.e. I don't have folders or multi-tasking yet.

OK FIRST , DID U SET UP THE EMAIL CAL AND CONTACTS CORRECTLY? AS FOR IT CRASHING IT SHOULDNT EVEN IF IT IS BLANK! NOW FOR THE PART ABOUT EMAIL NOT WORKING......I RECOMMEND U JUST RESTORE IT AND "YES" begin as a new device!!!! I HAD SAME PROBLEM EXCEPT MINE WAS : backup successful, restore successful, update to 4.2 successful, sync of backup back to iPad successful, ha ha then when I turn iPad on BLANK!!!!! OH THE CAPACITY BAR AT THE BOTTOM OF THE COMPUTER SCREEN IN ITUNES WAS 10.7 gb of music 9.2 of movies, and 5.7 gb of games..... WELL IPAD WAS EMPTY!
Sync 3 times same result..... RESTORED IT AND SYNCED BACKUP DATA AGAIN, still nothing! SO I RESTORED AND STARTED NEW! PERFECT?!
So I had to select the apps and other media that I wanted to put back on it! AND YES I LOST ALL THE PHOTOS (maybe I haven't found it on pc, so for now I assume lost) but PRIOR TO UPDATE I EMAILED ALL MY NOTES TO MYSELF SO THEY WERE JUST A COPY AND PASTE BACK TO MY NOTES APP ON THE IPAD!
Same with photos! Yeah tedious but I like to SEE INFO SAVED prior to any apple updates! So yeah there is something wrong with the sync portion of the update! So I suggest u just swallow loss and forget the data! AS FOR CONTACTS: just hop on computer and email a GROUP EMAIL OF CONTACTS TO IPAD THEN SET UP EMAIL ON IPAD AND THEN GO TO THAT EMAIL AND ADD THEM TO CONTACTS MANUALLY (or u can use your email server and sync via iTunes (see last tab on the iTunes menu for your device and there u can choose to sync calendars too)
