Spotlight search HTML pages SMB mount

Hey everyone,
I have been having some trouble getting spotlight to show results for certain searches. I have several machines connected with SMB that I would love to search through. I tried to search for the string “founded in 1975” in one of these volumes (HTML pages) but I get nothing. If spotlight does not have a drive indexed can’t it just conduct a plain text search through the volume? I have a PC with the same computers mounted where right click -> search works just fine.
In the system prefs, I don’t see HTML pages listed in the Spotlight categories, is this included in Documents?

Maybe I misunderstood you. Are you wanting to search for and find the html files for the site inside the domain file or the jpg, mov, mp3 and other media files that you have added to the site?
The text for each page is located inside an xml file that has been compressed into a .gz file. These are located inside folders named "site-page-plus a bunch of letters and numbers" (one for each page of the site) and these are located inside a folder titled "domain-and some combination of letters and numbers". I don't know if spotlight can cread the contents of a .gz compressed file. That's what would have to be done.
It's highly unlikely that Spotlight will be able to index those files but miracles do happen (if you believe in miracles).

  • Can ultra search portlet search html pages stored outside of portal

I have some html pages stored on my hard drive. I would like to search these from my portal page using the ultrasearch portlet.
    Is this possible?
    Thanks.

In answer to your question Ultra Search can search content from a number of sources, including websites files on the file system and of course, Portal.
The built in Portal Searching functionality can search files on a filesystem but only by creating URL items where the URL is a file:// URL that points to the file on a filesystem that is local to the Portal repository database.

  • Does Spotlight Search HTML Files?

I have a folder full of HTML files I just imported to my MacBook about a week ago. They have been backed up by my Time Capsule. But when I search for keywords in the contents of them, they do not show up. The file names will show up, but none of the contents (which are mainly text). I have tried to force Spotlight to search only the folder that contains the files, but it does not seem to be searching the HTML files.
Are HTML file contents excluded from Spotlight searches? I seem to have a number of webpages that come in Spotlight for keyword searches that appear to be the result of searching the file contents. So is there a trick to this? Is there some way I can force Spotlight to index this folder? Just not sure why it seems to search the contents of some HTML files and not others.

Are HTML file contents excluded from Spotlight searches?
No, HTML files are not excluded.
Open System Preferences > Spotlight, under Search Results tab is Webpages checked?
If yes, download a new html file and see if Spotlight finds it. If yes, then it could be a permissions issue with the files you imported. Do a Get Info and compare permissions between the new and old files.
You can reset your permissions on all your files similar to Disk Utility using the Recovery Drive. See instructions here:
Use OS X Recovery Disk Assistant to reset Your files and folder permissions

  • How to make Spotlight search always on available/mounted shares?

Hi all, is there a way to configure spotlight on our Leopard Clients to always search our spotlight enabled shares on our leopard server?
The only way we can do this until now is by manually selecting to search "Shares" in the finder. We would appreciate the quicker way via CMD+Space to find files also on our shares.
By default, CMD+Space seems to search only on the client.

I finally experienced the "Spotlight just stopped" issue after a year and a half of flawless use. Here is how I fixed it.
Went to System Preferences, chose User Accounts, and created a new account. Then logged into the new account. Spotlight was working, logged off new account then back into the original account. Spotlight was now working again for it.
My original intent was to just see if it was my user account that was having problems but it turned out to be the fix.
Maybe it will work for you and others.

  • Searching SMB Mounts

I'm having problems with one of my machines searching SMB shares. We have several Mac Pros that can search these shares fine (all on 10.5.5) and we have one Power Mac that can't search these shares (also on 10.5.5). I've tried rebuilding the spotlight index but I don't think that matters because it's not a spotlight search, but rather searching through a finder window and selecting the mounted share. Any suggestions? I'd even be happy with a third party app that would allow me to do this but can't seem to find anything.

    anyone???

  • Possible to disable iPhone Spotlight Search page?

I understand a lot of people use the Spotlight search feature on their iPhones to launch apps, find documents, songs and whatever.
Personally I have no need for it as I only use a very few basic apps, no documents and 2 playlists.
What I would like to do is disable that 'page' completely as I accidentally swipe to it every week or so and then have to swipe back to find what I was looking for. Just trying to make things a bit less annoying. A quick internet search of this issue found a fair number of people in the same situation.
Note: I've already set double-tapping the Home button brings up my few favourite phone numbers. I'm guessing someone will read the topic title, glance at the post and reply with "duh, just change the double-tap home button settings lol".

There is no way to disable the search page unless you jailbreak. Even then, I'm not familiar with an app that does what you are looking for. Sorry...

  • TREX Search : static HTML pages in KM with links to other intranet websites

    Hi there,
we have some static HTML pages stored in KM. Besides text, these pages contain links ot other intranet websites, pdf or word documents.
I have defined an index, according to <a href="http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw2004s/helpdata/en/73/66c090acf611d5993700508b6b8b11/frameset.htm">creating an index</a>
Following parameters have been added :
    IndexInternalLinks = true
    indexContentOfExternalLink = true
    showWithoutDatasource = true
Already had a look at <a href="http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw2004s/helpdata/en/46/5d5040b48a6913e10000000a1550b0/frameset.htm">Crawlers and Crawler Parameters</a>, tried by creating a new crawler profile and setting
Maximum Depth = 3 (we want to search three levels deep)
    There is also <a href="http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/46/5d5040b48a6913e10000000a1550b0/frameset.htm">Resource Filters</a>
The html pages itself are included in the index, but the content of the external links is not included.
Would this be possible? We don't want to define an <a href="http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw2004s/helpdata/en/73/66c090acf611d5993700508b6b8b11/frameset.htm">HTTP System</a> in the system landscape, as we don't need to index the whole external website and some parts of it are obsolete - we only want following the links and included the external content in the index.
    Portal version is NW2004S SP10.
    Thanks & best regards,
    Kevin

    Hello Kevin,
If you don't want to create a HTTP system then you can create a simple web repository.
For details you can follow help guide:
    http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/a4/76bd3b57743b09e10000000a11402f/frameset.htm
Also you can create a Web Repository:
    http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/12/47833ceb3da02ce10000000a114027/frameset.htm
Do refer to "Dynamic and Static Web Repositories" section in the document. This will answer your query.

  • Problems with Spotlight searching of shared volumes

According to: http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/300.html#spotlight, I should be able to "...search any connected Mac with Personal File Sharing enabled or a file server that’s sharing its files."
It doesn't specify what "file server", so I presume it means Spotlight should be able to search any mounted shared volume (assuming, of course, that indexing has been enabled).
I have a NAS device that I want to be able to search with Spotlight. According to mdutil, the volume is enabled for indexing, but I don't see any results when I search under "Shared" in Finder via Cmd+F. (I checked, and there's no .Spotlight folders on the volume.)
From what I recall, under Tiger you could manually specify a network volume to index, but if you dismounted the volume, you'd have to re-enable indexing on next mount. This worked for other file systems (such as Fat32 & NTFS), as well as for HFS+ drives.
According to mdutil in Leopard, the volume is still enabled for indexing even across dismounts. The NAS drive is not HFS+ formatted, but uses XFS.
I've tried deleting the index, to no avail.
Has anyone successfully used Spotlight to search mounted volumes on volumes not shared via another Mac?
    Am I missing something?

You have not missed anything.... Leopard promises but does NOT deliver.
I use an AFP server with Bonjour enabled. And NO NO NO Spotlight search is possible on this network volume...
This is outrageous and FALSE information....
Oh and - that Leopard is Sporting 300 new features is false info too.... Not even the "What is New in Leopard" says anything about 300 features.. But it sounds great doesn't it....

  • Adding Missing 'Size' Column in a spotlight search window

    Hi All,
Is there a way to get the 'Size' column to appear in a spotlight search window?
Maybe a terminal hack or something?
    Why didn't Steve include it?

Yes there is a hack to get it to appear, but it is buggy as all get out--which is undoubtedly why it didn't get turned on. Evidently finding out why it ain't working is not a priority, so it still hasn't been enabled in the OS updates (I would guess it is not likely it ever will be fixed). See this old MacOSXHints tip:

For little more information, including some screen captures, see my article here:
    http://www.pinkmutant.com/articles/mods.html
Its about half way down the page, in the section on "Brute Force Edit of the Plist"--did I mention it is really buggy?

  • Spotlight Searches on a NAS

    All,
I'm not sure where to ask this question, but I think this is the right section. I have a Synology NAS that's formatted as EXT4. It's working just fine, however when I do a Spotlight Search, I don't ever get any hits for anything on the NAS. It's not listed under Privacy in Spotlight in System Preferences. I also have an Apple Time Capsule (not sure how it's formatted, or if that even makes a difference), which I do get hits on when I do a Spotlight Search.
What, if anything can I do to get Spotlight Search hits on my NAS?
    Thanks for your help,
    Jeff

I just noticed that my NAS is mounted with SMB, while my Time Capsule is mounted via AFP. This may be the issue.

  • HT201285 Spotlight search iPad 2 problem

I have all the possibilities checked in Spotlight search options but I still can't get it to search in my Pages documents.  Any clues?
I have just started trying this search so I don't know if it is a new or old problem.  IOS is up to date.
I have tried turning off the mail portion of Search.
It is giving me search results for other apps on my iPad (contacts, music, web, etc.)
    Thanks for any help.

Unfortunately, that is correct. What you see in the the Spotlight settings .... Is what you get. Apps show up in the Spotlight search settings giving many users the impression that it will search for content in the apps, but as I stated, it will only search for the apps themselves.
Let Apple know what you think about the way that Spotlight works.
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipad.html
EDIT - after seeing your last post .... Yes those are apps - they are Apple's built in apps. They designed Spotlight to work with those apps. Pages is also an Apple app and Spotlight does not work with it.

  • FIREFOX 26 changed the 'post crash' page with the list of windows and pages. It was a real HTML page with links for each page. Now it isn't (and blows)

    * You changed the page that comes up after a crash - the one which shows the windows and pages that were up before the
    crash.
This used to be a real HTML page and it isn't any more. THis choice was pure isiocy consider how peopel used that page every day (try taking to your users for a change).
The pages listed on that 'post crash page' used to be actual LINKS (you could right click them &
manually open them in another tab - and most peope DID that every day). You could also (and I did this a lot) drag a second
copy of the page, into a new tab (to keep track of all the pages I had not wanted to open)
Now the pages are no longer links. You cannot right-click them.
The thing in the probser is no longer a page that I can drag into a new tab.
Roll the version back and throw this one in the bin...and have a good long talk with your developers about the definition of
    'STUPIDITIY'
Then I try to type anything in the addres bar it is suppose to repoond with the history of old things I have types in the past, or
search for what I type (and in some cases I think it tyes to convert it intoa URL). However it no longer does any of these
things. When I type in the ADDRESS BAR ONLY, I do not get all of my letters to appear. I have to type into a notepad or
into the search and to copy and paste to go to a URL. Nothing that is typed into the address bad responds normally at all
anymore, and I am fairly certain there are no new addons on this machine at all. It does not matter which things I disable. It
still does this. W of course points the finger back at a change to FIREFOX. I wich I could just sitct with one stable release
forever but the MOZILLA folk thing it is best to force peopel awy from a working broswer release to a horrible one (due to it
    being out of date).
FIREFOX 26.0 has 'issues' (ie new *features*/bugs)
    1) History is no longer accurate. My Proof? This machine is the primary one for the entire family (the only PC working). It is
logged in with same user every time and never has its history cleared. It now January 7 so I ought to have a list of all of last
    months browing available to me.
However, according to FIREFOX history, in all of December 2013, the entire family only went to 51 primary URL's. None of
the official TV sites I use to get episodes are listed. None of the official movie sites I use are listed. The primary URL for
ebay is not listed. Only 1 out of our 4 weather sites that I use (at least once a week) are listed. Only 1 of our 3 FINANCE
sites is listed. There ought to be several; hundred root URLs listed.
Please fix history as this change seriously "blows greasy chunks"
PROBLEM (a stupid change in the new FIREFOX version)
FOr a long time, after a crash you got a useful page (a real HTML page) which gave you a list of all of your last sessions
'winwos and tabs' that were open when the browser crashed. there were certain ways of using this page that are no longer
    able to be done.
The old method was wonderful as it had this behavior :
*** The old method for displaying your 'Recovered Tabs' allowed you to :
    a) right click an individual item and open it in a tab without getting rid of that lovely window of your previous session of
    'recovered windows and tabs '.
    2) drag the URL for the entire window of 'recovered windows and tabs ' to a new tab (to make a second copy) so that you
could select just a few of them to open as a group, and stil have the old list handy.
You can no longer do either of these things. The 'recovered windows and tabs ' page no longer has links in it and can no longer be dragged, so you cant select a few of them to use, and keep the rest around for later. NOW - once you choose which pages to open the window is gone forever (can can't get a second copy).
People used to make a copy of the page for later use (with a drag)
we also used to open pages with a right click (which no longer functions
This new method seriously blows big greasy chunks. A parge loss in function has occurred.
Put things back as they were. 26 is full of terrible changes that NOBODY likes. It also has a lot of bugs (history is not reliable at all)

    (1) Firefox's built-in post-crash page has not been a real HTML page for a long time (for example, from the time of Firefox 22, see: [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/968212 Want to save LOTS of versions of "Restore Session.xht" from the "oops ..." page for later use]). If you had this working differently with Firefox 25, that might have been created by an extension.
You can check to see whether extensions are disabled or need an update on the Add-ons page. Either:
    * Ctrl+Shift+a
    * orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
In the left column, click Extensions. The disabled extensions cluster toward the bottom of the list. To poll for updates, use the "gear" button above the list and choose Check for Updates.
If you used the Reset feature (or Firefox automatically did a reset due to some problem during upgrading), you will need to reinstall missing extensions. The reset feature creates a folder on the desktop named Old Firefox Data. Do you have that folder? There may be data you can recover from it.
    (2) There are many ways for history to get cleared, both internal to Firefox and external. Could you double-check your Privacy settings?
orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Privacy
    * The "Firefox will" drop-down says Remember History: Firefox shouldn't be clearing history, but an add-on or external software could do it
    * The "Firefox will" drop-down says Use custom settings for history: inspect the "Clear history when Firefox closes" setting to make Firefox isn't set to clear history. Also check your add-ons and consider external software.
Firefox normally accumulates months of history. However, some of Firefox's database sizes are based on disk space available. If your hard drive is very full, Firefox might reduce the amount of history stored.
