Spotlight Search? What is it for?

Tapping "Spotlight Search"  Gives me a list with things I can check mark  or uncheck mark ...are they important,?use a lot of data?

Spotlight serch on the far right of the iPhone's homescreen allows the user to search for emails, contacts, music, Apps, podcasts, nots, events, videos, reminders, messages, voice memos. If you have alot of apps, data on you iPhone and fell lazy to look for it to the highest purpose, you can use spotlight to either type what your looking for (iPhone 4 and lower) or speak what your looking for (iPhone 4S ONLY) In for spotlight to work you have to go to spotlight search in the settings app, go to general and scroll to spotlight and checkmark or uncheck mark what you what it to search for. I hope this was found helpfull.

  • Spotlight/Searching does not work for afp shares in Lion

    Hi
I cannot search for files in Finder on my afp shares. The server and client are both running Lion 10.7. Anything I am missing? Should this work or not? I'm so used to Spotlight I would really hate it if this isn't supported for afp shares.
    Thanks NEI

Acrobat catalog, PDX, files only work from local or network drives.
    From Acrobat's Help;
    "Moving collections and their indexes"
"You can develop and test an indexed document collection on a local hard drive and then move the finished document collection to a network server or disk."

  • Spotlight search doesn't work--for first letters H and N only! (iOS 5.1)

I have been reading a thread about spotlight not working until people updated to 5.1. Well, I have the reverse problem. I updated to 5.1 a few days ago, and now I can search for everything EXCEPT words that begin with H or N. When I try that, the enlarged letters on the keyboard freeze for 10 seconds, then disappear. Although the N or H appears in the search screen, no search results appear. I have tried shutting off various programs but that does not help. Anyone else see this problem?

Thanks, but I have done that already several time. I also closed all open applications, and I also Reset All Settings. No improvement. BTW I am using an iPhone 4.

  • How to Delete Messages in Spotlight Search History without Resetting or Syncing!!

I know there are a lot of individuals dealing with this issue and if you are like me you spend hours searching "how to delete messages in spotlight search history" and it seems like every post either says to reset your phone or sync it! I'm sorry but I did not want to go through the hassle of resetting my phone but I did try to sync it which did nothing so I decided to just mess around with my settings and I believe to have found the answer to everyone's question!!
This worked for me so I really hope this works for you! Just follow the steps below:
    1. Go to <settings><general><spotlight search><uncheck messages>
    2. Then turn your phone off and wait a minute! Turn your phone back on and off again 2 or 3 more times while waiting a minute in between turning it off!
    3. After you are done doing that go back to step 1 and <check messages>!
    4. Now go to your spotlight search and those messages should be deleted! If they are deleted I would recommend going back to step 1 and <uncheck messages> so you do not have the same problem with messages showing up again in the spotlight search!
It works for Mail too! Just follow the same steps listed above but uncheck mail instead of messages or do both at the same time!!
*Here is an extra tip which will remove deleted Mail Messages, just follow the steps below:
    1. Go to <settings><mail, contacts, calendars><your mail account> scroll down and click <advanced> Now click <remove> under the title Deleted Messages and you can choose to have your mail removed After One Day, After One Week, After One Month or Never.
I hope this post was detailed enough and easy to understand!
I really hope it works for you like it did for me!
    Good Luck!!!

I tried this fix and it does not work.
I have read that this is a problem for a long time - years. Me, personally, I do have emails and texts from the past that are private and were deleted, that I do not want my husband or daughter to read. Many people have this complaint and have had it a long time. Why does Apple not fix it?!?
Another privacy issue is the iMessage default settings on new devices. We bought a new iPhone for my college-age daughter and received all of her text messages until we noticed it and told her. We did a temporary fix. Then I got a new iPhone and the same thing happened. I had to set up iCloud accts. for each of us so that we each have privacy that cannot be tampered with. We still share our original iTunes account. Why did that have to happen?!?
We have been Apple consumers (laptops, iPads, iPods, iPhones) for over ten years (? longer w/just desk top) w/ the same account. These breaches in privacy are upsetting!!  My point here is that these breaches are unacceptable!  The spotlight search issue appears to be unresolved.  FIX THIS APPLE!

  • Spotlight search for emails outside of iMail

    Hi all,
By default, spotlight searches in iMail. I use another email client (Airmail) and I would like to include it in spotlight searches. Is that possible?
    Thanks

I have just found this on MacWorlds site...
    http://www.macworld.com/news/2005/11/15/spotlightanlaysis/index.php
Spotty Symbol Searches Spotlight’s handling of non-alphanumeric characters is quite strange. Try searching for a dollar value you know you’ve got in some file, for instance. When I searched for $150, I got matches for all files that contained 150, but not necessarily the dollar sign. Similarly, I was looking for a piece of Unix code that I knew contained %i. So I searched on that term, and Spotlight found 99,271 matches, only a couple of which had the %i string I was looking for. So maybe Spotlight just ignores the non-alphanumeric characters?
That doesn’t seem to be the case at all, as a search for just i found 298,436 matches (and took a long time to run!). So just what’s happening here? If it’s ignoring the non-alphanumeric characters, I should have seen the same number of matches in both searches. But I didn’t, so what exactly is it doing with them?
Has anyone found a workaround for this?
    Thanks,
    Ivan

  • HT201285 What order does spotlight search display??

I know that this search displays the results by app. But within the app how are the results displayed? For example, if I typed in ok, and all my text messages that have the word ok in them pop up what order are those in if any?
Also, does anybody konw exactly how long deleted messages will appear in the spotlight search? Or how far back the search goes?

I can't be certain but they appear to be in reverse chronological order.
Old messages will appear unti lthe cache gets written over (or is deleted by restoring the phone as new).

  • Spotlight searching for mailing list archives

I need to make spotlight searches available for individual Mailman/Pipermail mailing lists' web archives. How can I do it? So far, the only way I've found is to make a copy of the mailing list's web archives somewhere inside a web site's hierarchy, then add indexing for it with the mdimport -f command. Simply using a symbolic link to a mailing list archve folder in /private/var/mailman/archives/private doesn't work. I don't want to keep a separate copy of the mailing list archives just so that I can have one that's spotlight searchable.
      Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I can browse to the iPhoto Library in the Open dialogues from other apps. For some apps (eg Safari, Word), I can see the iPhoto Library, but it is greyed out
That's not what I mean. You're browsing to the Library, I mean +browse the contents of the Library+...
For instance: Consider the Open... Dialogue
On the left there's a Media heading, the contents of your Library can be accessed there.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
Is your Library available there? And in other Media Broswers in Pages, iMovie etc?

  • Spotlight Search for Reminders: Only references subject line, not Reminder Notes

Just shipped 20 large boxes from west cost to east coast, they're going to be sitting in the garage of where I'm staying for a month.  Using the Reminders app, I created Reminder for each box, in the subject line the box number and tracking number.  In the Notes field for each Reminder I entered the details of the box contents, thinking that I could later search for a particular item, find the Reminder for it and know what box it's in.
Wish I'd tested my theory as I've now discovered that while Reminders are searchable with Spotlight on my iOS devices, it only references the subject line -- Spotlight ignores Reminder comments.  Bummer :-(

  • Using AppleScript for launch a raw-query Spotlight search?

As per usual with my limited scripting skills, I am finding the apparently simple stuff rather difficult to achieve.
My problem with Spotlight is that I want to use the same type of raw query repeatedly, but I want to avoid the tedium of having to:
    1) open my saved search
    2) choose "Show Criteria" to make the saved raw query visible
    3) edit the text field containing the raw query, where the visible stuff is not what I want to edit, so I have to scroll to the right within that tiny field
So my idea would be to design a simple UI with AppleScript that
    1) pops up a dialog asking for a phrase to search
    2) launches a Spotlight search using the raw query:
    kMDItemTextContent=="xxx*"
where "xxx" is the phrase that I am searching for, and opens a Finder window with the results of that search.
My reason for wanting to do this is that, by default, a search for an exact phrase with Spotlight fails to return matches that contain the plural form when the searched phrase is a singular.
    See:
    http://www.betalogue.com/2010/05/07/spotlight-plural/
    http://www.betalogue.com/2010/05/11/spotlight-phrase/
for more information about the background for this.
Would this be relatively easy to do with AppleScript?
    Thanks in advance.

A smart folder is an XML file (PLIST), you can edit it in many ways.
It's possible with other shell commands (sed or awk).
But perl works seamlessly with extended characters (ASCII > 127)
Also it's possible with AppleScript commands (open for access, read, write, close access), or with *property list file* in System events
But it requires more lines of code.
    Here's the script :
    global a_text
    set smartFolder to "/Users/jack/Library/Saved Searches/Recherche dans “Bureau”.savedSearch"
set a_text to text returned of (display dialog "Enter a phrase to search" default answer "")
    if a_text contains """ then
    set a_text to findAndReplace(""", "\"", a_text)
    end if
    tell application "System Events"
set TheXML to property list file smartFolder
repeat with i in (get property list items of contents of TheXML)
set t_name to name of i
    if t_name is "RawQuery" then
tell i to set value to my replace_text(get value)
else if t_name is "SearchCriteria" then
tell property list item 2 of property list item "displayValues" of property list item 1 of property list item "FXCriteriaSlices" of i to set value to my replace_text(get value)
else if t_name is "RawQueryDict" then
tell property list item "RawQuery" of i to set value to my replace_text(get value)
    end if
    end repeat
    end tell
set smartFolder to ((POSIX file smartFolder) as alias)
    tell application "Finder"
    activate
    open smartFolder
    end tell
    on replace_text(t)
set x to the offset of "kMDItemTextContent==" in t
set L to length of t
    repeat with i from L to 1 by -1
    if character i of t = """ then
    set y to i
    exit repeat
    end if
    end repeat
    return (text 1 thru (x + 20) of t) & a_text & (text y thru -1 of t)
    end replace_text
    on findAndReplace(tofind, toreplace, t)
set ditd to text item delimiters
set text item delimiters to tofind
set t to text items of t
set text item delimiters to toreplace
set t to t as string
set text item delimiters to ditd
    return t
    end findAndReplace

  • HT201285 How do I start / run spotlight search to search for something???? :D

that's the question:  How do I start / run spotlight search to search for something????
    Thanks!

I think I figured it out:  screen doesn't say "Spotlight", it's just the keyboard when you swipe left to right on home screen . . . . .
oh well, I have other talents:  tap dancing.
If you have more info or cool suggestions, please reply and thankyou.  What I'm trying to find is a deleted message and its attached photo . . . . . quasi urgent.

I've searched to no avail for this problem. Similar posts but none that tell me what to do. I can't add or delete any bookmarks on my iPad 2 running the newest iOS. I know how it's suppose to work, it just isn't working!
It started after the major update to iOS 7.
I can't believe that this is so hard to do. It's just not letting me. I can add a bookmark to the home screen just fine, just not in a bookmarks folder anywhere I try.
I've used Apple products since 2001 and have always loved how intuitive they are. But the Safari browser since iOS 7 has been the worst I've experienced. At least right in the beginning after that update.
I'd really appreciate any help that doesn't just tell me how it's suppose to work...I know that.
My iPad 4 is not affected with the problem and works as it should.

my iphone 4 only turns on when its plugged into a wall and when it finally turns on it lasts for about a minute then it turns off and while its on the signal says searching, what should i do?

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem. You likely have a bad battery.
Apple Retail Store - Genius Bar
Apple will exchange your iPod for a refurbished one with a new battery for $79. They do not fix yours.
    Apple - iPod Repair price
A third-party place like the following will replace yur battery for less. Google for more.

Replace the battery yourself if you are up to it. A replacement costs about $10

  • When using spotlight search on my 5s it will not show past text messages that haven't even been deleted even if I type a specific word that I know is in a message I want to search for. I have message search turned on in the spotlight settings.

When using spotlight search my phone will not show all text messages with a common word even though I have not deleted any messages from my phone and I have the message search turned on in settings under spotlight search. The search only shows the messages that are recent within the past day or so. Why won't it show the other messages when I search for them even using a specific word that I know was in the message I'm searching for.

    Hello ChiomaM,
It sounds like you are not getting notifications for new text messages that are coming in, and you must manually check the app. I recommend checking the Notification settings to see if they are configured correctly:
    iOS: Understanding notifications
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3576
iOS apps can provide three types of notifications:
    Sounds: An audible alert plays.
Alerts/Banners: An alert or banner appears on the screen.
Badges: An image or number appears on the application icon.
You can view which apps provide notifications and adjust notification settings using Settings > Notification Center. For additional information, refer to the user guide for your device.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

    Sterling

  • Spotlight Search for 0KB Images?

I'm having a big problem with my iPhoto Library.
Is there a way for me to search for 0KB images in an iPhoto Library (say after I do a Show Package Contents)?
If so, I'd love to get specific instructions on how to do this. Also, if there is a Spotlight Forum please direct me to it as I could not find it.
    Thanks

Or try Find Any File . I find Spotlight searches overly complex and limited.

  • What is the power of the Spotlight Search?

In Settings I have everything selected for it to search but it cannot find text within apps. For instance I have Word and Excell and text files in Quickoffice but it cannot search any of those. Is there an alternate search engine app to download?
    Thank you for any insight!

That is correct. The Spotlight search does not search within apps. It searches for:
    Spotlight searches the following:
    Contacts—All content
    Apps—Titles
Music—Names of songs, artists, and albums, and the titles of podcasts and videos
    Podcasts—Titles
    Videos—Titles
    Audiobooks—Titles
    Notes—Text of notes
Calendar (Events)—Event titles, invitees, locations, and notes
Mail—To, From, and Subject fields of all accounts (the text of messages isn’t searched)
    Reminders—Titles
    Messages—Names and text of messages
Search the web or Wikipedia from Spotlight: Scroll to the bottom of the search results, then tap Search Web or Search Wikipedia.
Open an app from Search: Enter all or part of the app name, then tap the app.
Choose which items are searched, and the order they’re searched: Go to Settings > General > Spotlight Search.
