Spotlight Searches of Encrypted Messages

Greetings,
Is there a way to get Spotlight to search the contents of encrypted messages?
I have a number of messages in my Mail folders that have been signed with Digital IDs. Spotlight will not search the contents of these messages (headers and subjects seem to be ok).
I have tried checking the "Encrypted Messages" in preferences and have reindexed the Mail folder with no luck.
Thanks.
  Mac OS X (10.4.8)

On the top of my head, I would suggest that you could search for sender, date, etc., in encrypted emails, but as the contents is encrypted, you would need to know the makeup of the encryption. For example, if you were looking for a message with the word "warning", you would have to type in the encryption, e.g., "%r^:&x$' of that word to find it. Otherwise why encrypt the contents in the first place.
If for example, Spotlight could find by contents in an encrypted message, anyone who can intercept you email would be able to read your mail.

After upgrading to ios8, I discovered that the spotlight search for text messages only "sees" my last two texts but not any of the others I have on my phone. These are all active conversations, not deleted messages.  Any ideas how to fix?  Thanks.

I Fixed mine by going to setting->General->Sptolight and unchecking "messages", exiting the function then returning and rechecking "messages".

  • How to Delete Messages in Spotlight Search History without Resetting or Syncing!!

I know there are a lot of individuals dealing with this issue and if you are like me you spend hours searching "how to delete messages in spotlight search history" and it seems like every post either says to reset your phone or sync it! I'm sorry but I did not want to go through the hassle of resetting my phone but I did try to sync it which did nothing so I decided to just mess around with my settings and I believe to have found the answer to everyone's question!!
This worked for me so I really hope this works for you! Just follow the steps below:
    1. Go to <settings><general><spotlight search><uncheck messages>
    2. Then turn your phone off and wait a minute! Turn your phone back on and off again 2 or 3 more times while waiting a minute in between turning it off!
    3. After you are done doing that go back to step 1 and <check messages>!
    4. Now go to your spotlight search and those messages should be deleted! If they are deleted I would recommend going back to step 1 and <uncheck messages> so you do not have the same problem with messages showing up again in the spotlight search!
It works for Mail too! Just follow the same steps listed above but uncheck mail instead of messages or do both at the same time!!
*Here is an extra tip which will remove deleted Mail Messages, just follow the steps below:
    1. Go to <settings><mail, contacts, calendars><your mail account> scroll down and click <advanced> Now click <remove> under the title Deleted Messages and you can choose to have your mail removed After One Day, After One Week, After One Month or Never.
I hope this post was detailed enough and easy to understand!
I really hope it works for you like it did for me!
    Good Luck!!!

I tried this fix and it does not work.
I have read that this is a problem for a long time - years. Me, personally, I do have emails and texts from the past that are private and were deleted, that I do not want my husband or daughter to read. Many people have this complaint and have had it a long time. Why does Apple not fix it?!?
Another privacy issue is the iMessage default settings on new devices. We bought a new iPhone for my college-age daughter and received all of her text messages until we noticed it and told her. We did a temporary fix. Then I got a new iPhone and the same thing happened. I had to set up iCloud accts. for each of us so that we each have privacy that cannot be tampered with. We still share our original iTunes account. Why did that have to happen?!?
We have been Apple consumers (laptops, iPads, iPods, iPhones) for over ten years (? longer w/just desk top) w/ the same account. These breaches in privacy are upsetting!!  My point here is that these breaches are unacceptable!  The spotlight search issue appears to be unresolved.  FIX THIS APPLE!

  • Ios 4.1 message spotlight search

After updating my iphone 3g from ios 4.0, that was extremely slow, to 4.1, the performance was enhanced drastically, but i cant find spotlight search inside the messages app. So I was wondering, am I the only one facing this issue or was this feature removed with the new update?

I believe this is one of the things they did to speed up the system on the 3G. I believe they turned off several of the search functions, but I think you can turn some of them back on. You can check the settings for spotlight search if you go into settings, spotlight search and put checkmarks by the areas you want search to check when you are searching. See if that helps you.

  • When using spotlight search on my 5s it will not show past text messages that haven't even been deleted even if I type a specific word that I know is in a message I want to search for. I have message search turned on in the spotlight settings.

When using spotlight search my phone will not show all text messages with a common word even though I have not deleted any messages from my phone and I have the message search turned on in settings under spotlight search. The search only shows the messages that are recent within the past day or so. Why won't it show the other messages when I search for them even using a specific word that I know was in the message I'm searching for.

    Hello ChiomaM,
It sounds like you are not getting notifications for new text messages that are coming in, and you must manually check the app. I recommend checking the Notification settings to see if they are configured correctly:
    iOS: Understanding notifications
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3576
iOS apps can provide three types of notifications:
    Sounds: An audible alert plays.
Alerts/Banners: An alert or banner appears on the screen.
Badges: An image or number appears on the application icon.
You can view which apps provide notifications and adjust notification settings using Settings > Notification Center. For additional information, refer to the user guide for your device.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Regards,
    Sterling

  • Viewing multiple results in Spotlight search in messages

When I perform a spotlight search for certain words in Messages it returns multiple results with multiple people.  How do I view each conversation?  I have 18 results with one person but can only view one conversation out of the 18 when I click?  Thanks!

    Hi,
I am confused as to where you are starting from.
Spotlight is the Search App that can be accessed top right in the Menu Bar with the spyglass type icon.
It does not matter which app is "front" it will Search all the allowed places (mostly the Mac User account info and on other Mounted Drives).
There is a Search option in the Main Window of the Messages App
This will change the list to show those Chats with the word in them.
It will highlight one when you View that Chat.
Using the Edit Menu > Find > Next  (or Use the Keystrokes CMD+ F) will cycle the found word through as many chats as have been found.
Same List of Chats without the Search Criteria listed
    (No Highlighted Text).

  • Spotlight search on iPhone 5 not going to selected text message

    Hi all,
I'm having a problem with my new iPhone 5 and the Spotlight search when looking for text messages.
When searching for old texts the phone doesn't go to the specific message it has found, instead it only goes to the most recent message the relevant sender has sent.
My old 4 used to go to the specific message searched for. Has this feature been disabled on the 5 or is it just a fault? A friend of mine with a 5 also has this issue.
Thanks in advance for your help!
    Matt

When you "delete" some kinds of items from the iPhone, they don't actually get deleted. Instead, they're marked for deletion by the operating system and hidden so that they appear deleted. But they're still on the phone. Only when you sync your iPhone with iTunes are they truly deleted.
As far as I know, there are only a couple ways to truly and permanently delete SMS messages from your iPhone:
Sync - Since syncing with iTunes is what actually erases items you've marked for deletion. If you delete an SMS on your iPhone and then sync your iPhone, the message really will be gone for good.
Remove Messages from Spotlight Search - Your deleted SMS messages can't appear in a Spotlight search if Spotlight isn't looking for them in the first place. You can control what apps Spotlight searches in and which it ignores. To check this:
From your home screen, tap Settings
    Tap General
Scroll about halfway down the screen and tap Spotlight Search
Scroll to the bottom of the screen and tap Messages to uncheck it.

  • How to recover text messages that appear in the spotlight search ?

    Hi,
I've somehow lost all my text messages, but they still appear in the spotlight search. Does anyone know how to recover them ? Any help will be much appreciated since I really need most of those texts. Thank you.

First of all, it is possible to recover iMessage from the iPhone 5s. If you have turned on "iCloud Backup" before, all messages would be synced to the cloud automatically. You can follow the official guide for more details:
Back up and restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch using iCloud or iTunes - Apple Support
Or you can restore data from the latest iTunes backup to your iPhone, maybe the texts that you want are there

Suerte.

  • How do you get the iPhone to take you to a direct message when you search for something in Spotlight Search?

Everytime I search for  a message, the iPhone takes me to the bottom of the text screen. How do I find that exact message without having to search by myself? Are there any options to change this?

    You aren't crazy.
Adding the photo to contacts on the computer gets you the smaller pix when people call.
Assign the photo on the phone itself and you get full-size pix.
Additionally I took a few test photos from the iphone and tried setting them to contacts. This didnt work either.
So, that certainly should work. Try it again? Try it with a brand new contact, maybe it is not overwriting a previously existing picture.
I suppose there is a small possibility that Apple thought this differing behavior was a bug instead of a feature and "fixed" it with a recent update, but I doubt it.

    1) If you have sensitive business information on your phone, put a passcode on it.
    2) Apple doesn't participate here. If you want to give them feedback, here's the link:
