Spotlight searching a Mac that's a firewire-connected Target Disk?

I was interested to know if Spotlight can search on another Mac that's in Target Disk mode. It seems to me that it does not, but perhaps there is some way it could?

Hi Lunchbox,
I did a quick search in the Apple Help Viewer by typing in: migrating in the search field. Here's the result.. might help.
Intel-based Mac: Some migrated applications may need to be updated
Symptoms
After using Migration Assistant or Setup Assistant to migrate applications from a PowerPC-based Mac to an Intel-based Mac, some of the migrated applications may not launch or function correctly.
Resolution
If you find an application that does not open or function correctly, use the steps found in "Intel-based Mac: How to tell if an application is Universal" to see if the application is Universal. If the application is PowerPC (not Universal), check to see if a newer version of the application exists that may work better with Intel-based Macs.
Additional information
When Migration Assistant or Setup Assistant is used to migrate applications between two computers, it will bring over any applications it finds on the source computer that are not already installed on the destination computer. In some cases, a PowerPC-based Mac may have applications that will not run correctly through Rosetta on the Intel-based Mac.
For example, if your PowerPC-based Mac has X11 installed, but your Intel-based Mac does not, and you use Migration Assistant to migrate applications from the PowerPC-based Mac to the Intel-based Mac, X11 will get transferred to the Intel-based Mac but it will not open. In this case, you can delete the PowerPC version of X11 and use Optional Installs on the Install Disc that came with your Intel-based Mac to install the correct version of X11.

My spotlight search on mac lost its curved edges
Hello, I was using my spotlight search and now i noticed that its edges are not curved anymore. Now they are straight. I don't like them: i like them like they used to be, curved.
    What could I do?
Things i did that evidently did not work:
    - Restart my mac
    - Safely boot my mac
    - change the color of the ui to dark and black to normal

  • Disk Permissions changed after connecting mac via firewire on Target Disk Mode.

I have connected 2 macbook pros using firewire in target disk mode and the permissions on the destination macbook pro have changed. Now when I try to start the macbook pro, it stays on the grey screen and the apple sign changes to a prohibitory sign, therefore I cant log in.
    Please help!
    Thanks

I am unable to perform a safe boot, it simply wont happen.
I tried to start from mac osx install disk and that works so I am able to go disk utility, I can run 'verify disk' and 'repair disk' and it shows that everything is ok, however, I cant 'verify disk permissions' or 'repair disk permissions' as both are greyed out because 'the selected disk is not mounted'. I try mounting but that wont work either, I am told to 'disk can not be mounted, run first aid first and then retry'.
Furthermore, I try to perform 'archive and install' so I follow these instructions:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1710
But on number 7, intead of being able to choose volume to install to, there is nothing I can choose! There is no list. And of course I cant continue.
    Any help is appreciated!

  • Booting Windows on Intel Mac from an external Firewire/USB hard disk?

Is it possible to boot an Intel iMac from an external hard disk - in target disk mode etc., without having to install Boot Camp?
I have a spare drive with installed XP on it and I need to find out what is on the drive before re-formatting. However, I only have my mac in which to do so. The extra disk will be used in an external firewire/USB 2.0 caddy. I have researched some methods, but they are all very long winded and require a PC or the creation of a Windows partition on my start-up disk using Boot Camp.

"Is it possible to boot an Intel iMac from an external hard disk - in target disk mode etc., without having to install Boot Camp?"
    No.

  • Mac Mini won't Boot after Target Disk Mode

We just bought a new iMac and used target disk mode via firewire from our older Mac Mini running OSX 10.4 to transfer data.  Now when we go to restart the mini, the grey screen appears with apple logo and it seems to try to boot up but after a long time alway just ends up with a blue screen.  I don't  think I "ejected" the mini properly from the imac after the target disk mode transfer.  Could the mini be stuck in target disk mode?  I've tried to restart in different modes eg. safe mode, pram by holding down keys on start up but doesnt make a difference at all almost as if the keyboard isn't registering (and its a wired keyboard).  Any ideas???
    Thanks

Try starting up from the Recovery Partition holding the Option (Alt) key and see if you can Repair your Macintosh HD, as per > OS X: About OS X Recovery

  • Mac mini won't boot into target disk mode

    Hi
I just bought a Mac mini on eBay. I'm not sure of the spec but I think its a G4.
When it arrived I plugged it in and switched on to find the question mark folder appear.
I put in a 10.5 disk but it would not boot from it. [this was a disk I got with another s/h machine though so may not be bootable]
As I could not install from the disk I figured my best bet would be to target disk in and install osx from a powerbook I have here.
However I can't get target disk to work.
The keyboard is definitely working as it allows me to boot into OF and zap the PRAM
I've also tried pressing what I believe to be the SMU button just behind the connector board to the HD and DVD drive but no luck.
Anybody got any ideas as to whats going on?
    Cheers

Ok, I can probably get a copy of OSX
The problem is I think the DVD drive is faulty as it wouldn't give me my disk back I tried "eject cd" in OF but it didn't work and I had to open it up with a screw driver and take it out.
If the disk is corrupted is there a way to erase it without putting it in another machine. ie can it be done from OF?
    Thanks for your help btw

  • Spotlight Searches "This Mac" Instead of Current Folder

If I have a folder open in Finder (in this case, from an external FAT32 drive) and I type a search into Spotlight within that Finder window, it will show results for "This Mac" instead of the current folder that I was in.
I have to click the folder name to the right of "This Mac" in the gray search options to get it to look in the correct folder. It's not a huge problem, just really annoying.
Anyone know how to fix this?
    Thanks,
    Chris

This behavior is definitely a pain. Certainly not the Tiger behavior. If I bother to navigate to a particular folder and then do a search, chances are I want to search that folder. If I search in a Finder window the default behavior should be to search the current folder. I've been looking for a way to change this for hours now. Hopefully someone can figure out a way. In the meantime I'm leaving feedback to Apple to express my displeasure with this change.

  • Spotlight search for emails outside of iMail

    Hi all,
By default, spotlight searches in iMail. I use another email client (Airmail) and I would like to include it in spotlight searches. Is that possible?
    Thanks

I have just found this on MacWorlds site...
    http://www.macworld.com/news/2005/11/15/spotlightanlaysis/index.php
Spotty Symbol Searches Spotlight’s handling of non-alphanumeric characters is quite strange. Try searching for a dollar value you know you’ve got in some file, for instance. When I searched for $150, I got matches for all files that contained 150, but not necessarily the dollar sign. Similarly, I was looking for a piece of Unix code that I knew contained %i. So I searched on that term, and Spotlight found 99,271 matches, only a couple of which had the %i string I was looking for. So maybe Spotlight just ignores the non-alphanumeric characters?
That doesn’t seem to be the case at all, as a search for just i found 298,436 matches (and took a long time to run!). So just what’s happening here? If it’s ignoring the non-alphanumeric characters, I should have seen the same number of matches in both searches. But I didn’t, so what exactly is it doing with them?
Has anyone found a workaround for this?
    Thanks,
    Ivan

  • Missing Finder/Spotlight search attributes!

When searching in the finder, after pressing the icon from the search bar and then selecting "other" from the drop down menu, there is no search attributes to check mark. I am not on an root or guest account. I am the administrator. Is there a preference file anywhere I can delete? Thanks in advance.

I just finished an archive and install, and the spotlight search attribute list that comes up from selecting other is still blank. I checked right after the archive and install, and it was blank, and I checked after applying each update, and it remained blank after each update.
I have also applied the directly downloaded (rather than using software update) update to 10.5.1, and still no items appear on the list.
I have not tried a full slash and burn reformat and install yet, but that may be what it comes down to. I am weighing whether the annoyance of being unable to search my Library folder outweighs the annoyance of a reformat and install from scratch.

  • Front firewire connections

My 845PE Max2 MB gives me 3 IEEE 1394 connections on the board. I am using two of the three available connections for the S-Bracket on the rear (J1394_1 & J1394_2 and they operate OK) and trying to get J1394_3 connected to the front panel. I have an Antec case with six wires to front panel. Here is how I have them connected to J1394_3:
    Pin 1 - TPA +
    pin 2 - TPA -
Pin 3 - Ground (VG is Antec ID)
    Pin 4 - open
    Pin 5 - TPB +
    Pin 6 - TPB -
Pin 7 - Power (VP is antec ID)
    Pin 8 - open
    Pin 9 - key
    Pin 10 - open
It's not working! Ok, what am I doing wrong. Can anybody help?

My buddy had that same problem with his Antec Sonata case, it seems that the front Firewire connection was wired wrong on the case, from the factory.  He had to take the wires out of the connector, and rewire it to work.  Two of the connections were backwards, like the person was looking in a mirror when he did it  Check them out really good.

  • Firewire transfer without Target Disk Mode

Is there anyway to connect two Macs to files transfer without using Target Disk Mode, or rather, without having to shut either of the two machines down first? Either natively or with another program?

you can just use regular file sharing. enable file sharing on both macs in system preferences->sharing. then on mac1 you'll see mac 2 in the sidebar in finder in the Shared section. click on it, connect with your usernname and password and transfer away. the macs need to be on the same local network. for faster connection connect them directly by an ethernet or a firewire cable.

  • I currently have a MAC Mini, which has 1 Firewire 800 port.  I have a 1TB external hard disk that runs at Firewire 400.  Can I insert another external hard drive that runs at Firewire 800?

Here's the deal.  Currently running SL 10.6.8 on a MAC Mini.  Planning for eventual upgrade to ML.  Have a 1TB external hard drive partitioned into two volumes, one volume for Time Machine and one volume for SL which I periodically update using Superduper.  Thus I always have a point-in-time bootable backup on the external hard drive.
The MAC Mini supports Firewire 800.  However, booting from my current external hard disk is pretty slow, since it only supports Firewire 400.  I am considering buying an Iomega MiniMax which supports Firewire 800.  Then, I would use the MiniMax as my bootable backup volume, and relegate the older hard drive to Time Machine.
So, question #1 is, can I daisychain the new MiniMax between the MAC Mini and my existing external hard drive?  My expectation is that the new Mini Max would run using Firewire 800 and that the existing hard drive would run at Firewire 400 speed as it does today.  If it doesn't (e.g., daisychaining in the Firewire 400 external disk with the MiniMax Firewire 800 external disk ends up running the whole leg at 400), my resolution will be to run the existing hard disk off an available USB port and have just the MiniMax running at Firewire 800.
Why am I going to all this trouble?  That's question #2.  I don't trust upgrades; they always break something.  When I upgraded from 10.5.x to 10.6.x, the web directories got renamed, and all of my web apps 403'd until I figured out what happened.  Plus, I have accounts for other family members, and in order to ensure their ability to use the computer during my upgrade process, I need to have the ability to fall-back quickly to a known-stable version of OSX.  So what I'm trying to do is insulate myself from problems by partitioning the MiniMax into two volumes, taking a Superduper image of my current installation on the Mac Mini to MiniMax external drive volume 1, then upgrading to ML on the MAC Mini, and take a SuperDuper image of that to MiniMax external drive volume 2.  Then, if the upgrade results in problems I can't resolve immediately, I can simply reimage the MAC Mini from MiniMax volume 1.  BUT ...
... I've read that the ML installation creates a "service and support" partition that is different than the startup disk.  I'm concerned that I won't be able to reimage the hard disk in the MAC Mini once I upgrade it to ML because of the partitioning changes it introduces on the startup disk.  Theoretically, I +should+ be able to use the disk utility on my SL system to repartition the disk in the MAC Mini prior to reimaging it from my backup, but I'm considering the possibility that the new partition may be of a type that the SL disk utility cannot identify, and might therefore be unable to delete or even detect.  So I'm hoping someone else has been down this road and can advise me.  Even at Firewire 800 speeds, booting from an external disk is still going to be slow, so I want to be able to restore my SL image to the MAC Mini hard disk.
A little background on me.  I work for a major disaster recovery provider.  I used to have a Mac PRO G5, which I got used, and the first thing I did with it was install a second hard disk, SuperDupe an image from the first disk to the second, and made sure I could boot from the second.  THEN I started using and customizing the MAC.  I really feel vulnerable with the MAC Mini, since it only has the single internal hard drive - sort of like going out in public dressed only in a long T-shirt.  So my whole thing is, I ABSOLUTELY MUST BE ABLE TO PUT THINGS BACK THE WAY THEY WERE before I do the migration to ML.
Obsessive-cumpulsive?  Yep.  Anal?  You got it.  That's why I'm in the DR business.

You may have overloaded the port, following the instructions below it should reset:
    +1. Shut down the computer.+
+2. Disconnect all devices and all other cables, except the keyboard and mouse cable(s).+
+3. Disconnect the computer from the power outlet and wait for 3 to 5 minutes.+
+4. Plug the computer back in and turn it on.+
+5. Reconnect the device(s) (one at a time if there is more than one) and test. Test with each port if you have more than one.+

Can you install tiger on a power mac g4 with out a DVD drive if so how, I do have have a 2011 iMac can I use that in target disk mode with a FireWire cable any help would be appreciated

    Hello,
You need to put the Tiger Install Disc in the 2011 iMac, boot the 2011 uMac into Target mode...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
Boot the G4 holding the Option or alt key, hopefully the Install Disc in the 2011 iMac will show as a boot choice.
We just want to use the 2011 iMac as a big expensive FW Optical drive, it cannot be installed osing the 2011 iMac itself.

  • HT1668 I am seeing "all" my emails including those that I deleted days, months, years ago in the "spotlight search" screen of my iPad and iPhone. All account trash folders are emptied. How to remove?

Hello.. I'm seeing all my emails from all my accounts located in the "spotlight search" feature of my iPad and iPhone4. What's most troubling is, there are emails that have previously been deleted. I have confirmed over and over that all trash folders for accounts are emptied as well as all other folders.. I empty the trash very regularly. When I select an email from the list in the spotlight screen, it will take me to an in box for that email where it may or may not exist.. Often it opens another persons email all together.. The bottom line is that I can not delete these emails and it's very nerve racking... Any help is greatly appreciated. Than you..

Thank Goodness for Time Machine.  I was able to restore from a recent back up.
However as a follow up I now have a glitch in that Icloud email will only restore from oldest to newest.  My Icloud.com account is fine. All my email are in chronological order from newest to oldest.
With the help of support from this site I was able to confirm that the problem is not resolved by disabling mail and then enabling again or even from deleting the Icloud Email Account and then reloading.  It is exactly the same.
The only way I can get yesterday's email on my devices is to load 5000 emails starting back in 2010.
I think I caused a glitch when I was restoring from Time Machine.  It was late at night and it was taking a long time so I went to bed thinking it would just continue on.  Well i should have taken my computer out of Sleep Mode because my Imac must have powered down somehow causing the glitch.
Although you would think that I would also have a corrupted email account on Icloud.com
who knows....... the reason why i tend to live with problems rather than correct them because i hate it when stuff like this happens when you do................

  • When using spotlight search on my 5s it will not show past text messages that haven't even been deleted even if I type a specific word that I know is in a message I want to search for. I have message search turned on in the spotlight settings.

When using spotlight search my phone will not show all text messages with a common word even though I have not deleted any messages from my phone and I have the message search turned on in settings under spotlight search. The search only shows the messages that are recent within the past day or so. Why won't it show the other messages when I search for them even using a specific word that I know was in the message I'm searching for.

    Hello ChiomaM,
It sounds like you are not getting notifications for new text messages that are coming in, and you must manually check the app. I recommend checking the Notification settings to see if they are configured correctly:
    iOS: Understanding notifications
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3576
iOS apps can provide three types of notifications:
    Sounds: An audible alert plays.
Alerts/Banners: An alert or banner appears on the screen.
Badges: An image or number appears on the application icon.
You can view which apps provide notifications and adjust notification settings using Settings > Notification Center. For additional information, refer to the user guide for your device.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Regards,
    Sterling
