Spotlight stopped indexing?!

I have recently upgraded firefox 3 (but just drag and drop and replacing the old one) and also Skype to the most update to date version. However, spotlight can not find these... I use bootcamp and parallels for windows XP system and the spotlight will only show the windows version of the software!!!
Help! Is there a way to force spotlight to index everything? I have checked everything in the preference panel. Is my spotlight somehow corrupted? If so, is there a way to fix it?
Thank you in advance for all your help!

Hello everyone! I am having the same problem with my Spotlight not indexing anymore. In fact, when I use Spotlight, putting in a term that I KNOW a file exists for, it returns the error "nothing found." I used the following tip found on the site to manually turn on indexing (or so it said) but still no indexing. Does anyone have any ideas on what I can do? It's really becoming a pain not having spotlight work. Thanks to everyone!! P DUB
(Here is the solution I tried that didn't seem to work--at least not for me---I will say this however:
AFTER I completed these steps, I did get a message in TERMINAL that said "indexing enabled." which was encouraging---but spotlight has still not indexed!! Again, any ideas??
This tip is useful, but a way too complicated way to do this. A better and simpler solution is as follows:
1. Login in to your server as an administrator.
2. Open the Terminal application (in your /Applications/Utilities folder)
3. Type the following exactly as written in to the Terminal:
sudo rm /.metadataneverindex
It will ask you for your password. I have never seen this file, so you may get a "file not found" error - in which case move on to step 4 anyway.
4. Type the following in to the Terminal:
sudo mdutil -i on /

5. Spotlight in the right corner of your server login should indicate it is indexing, and before long will start working.
I don't believe editing of hostconfig is required at all, and you don't need to do all this stuff with making invisible files visible since you are already in the Terminal anyway.)
THANKS TO EVERYONE FOR YOUR HELP!! P DUB OKC

  • How can I stop Spotlight from indexing external drives?

I work in an environment where we plugin several different costumer harddrives all day long as part of our working process. Often only to extract one file from a given drive. Therefore its annoying that Spotlight automatically starts indexing these drives, because it slows down everthing, but also because our windows costumers suddenly see these weird mac files on their drives, that are invisible to the macuser. The Privacy setting is not of much use, as its impossible to add oru costumers drives to the list - we simply don't know the drive until we see it.
    How can spotlight stop indexing?

The Privacy option is okay for private users, but at work we receive alot of harddrives from costumers and we simply cannot spend the extra time waiting for a drive to be indexed every time it is connected. That drive may never be connected again as it belongs to a costumer, and it is impossible for us to add drives to the Privacy pane, because we do not know they exist before we see them infront of us. The ption to disable all external drives from being indexed would be great. Or that the indexing can be stopped in the spotlight menu, or that the indexing will not start until 10 minutes after the drive has been mounted - and only if the drive is inactive.

  • Stop Spotlight from indexing new drives

I know how to block a drive in Spotlight's privacy settings.
What I'm looking for is a way to stop Spotlight from indexing a drive every time I plug one in.  I'm often connecting external drives for work & spotlight immediatley starts to index & I go in and add it to the blocked list in Spotlight> Privacy.
Is there a way to just have Spotlight NOT try to index a new drive?

    Sorry, I missed that part.
Try this, add this file to the external drive.
touch /Volumes/name of the external drive/.metadata_never_index
This will add a file called .metadata_never_index to the root of that drive.
    You can also disable spotlight
    sudo mdutil -a -i off
    To re-enable Spotlight:
    sudo mdutil -a -i on

  • How to stop Spotlight from indexing backup drives

Is there any way to stop Spotlight from indexing backup drives?
    Thanks

Yes, in Spotlight preferences there is an option to do this. I'm not on my Mac now, so I forget exactly where in Spotlight preferences it is. I believe there is a second tab that you have to click on, then click the "+" sign to add items to Exclude. Just add your backup drive.

  • How do I stop spotlight from indexing files?

I only have 2GB of RAM and Indexing files really slows down my computer, so much that i can hardly operate the computer. Is there any way that i can stop Spotlight from indexing my files automatically or have it index every week instead of every day?

It shouldn't be running so much that it slows down the computer. It will run for a while, initially, but after that it should index files on the fly as they are added. I suppose if you dumped a ton of files onto the hard drive, it would spend a while indexing them.
You might try restarting the index as it might be corrupt. To do so, go to the Privacy tab in Spotlight. Add your hard drive to the list. Wait about 10 seconds, then remove your hard drive. Don't do that while you're working, though.

  • Spotlight stopped finding files, even after "index". They're visible files, not system files (like.jpg, .xls, .doc). This happened for no apperent reason.

Worked well with Yosemite the first week, but now it doesn't.

Any advice would be helpful. Thanks

  • Spotlight wont stop indexing

My Spotlight wont stop indexing. It says (and has always said) there is about 2000 hrs left until it has finished indexing... hence I cant use. Any idea of how I can fix this? THANKS!

Launch the Terminal app in /Applications/Utilities/, copy & paste this command into the window that pops up, and hit the return key:
    *sudo mdutil -E /*
When the Password: prompt pops up, enter your admin password, carefully, since nothing shows up on the screen, and hit the return key. When the prompt returns, quit the Terminal app.
The command +causes the local store for the boot volume to be erased. The store will be rebuilt.+ The store is what contains the index and supporting items.

  • Spotlight constantly indexing in a never ending loop

I've upgraded my older Aluminium iMac Early 2008 model from Tiger to Snow Leopard to Lion and then Mountain Lion.
Since Mountain Lion, I've been having indexing problems. The mds process just doesn't want to stop. I have tried all the solutions.
Turn off mds from launchtl and then delete the /.Spotlight.V100/ folder, relaunch via launchctl again, then stopping indexing using, mdutil deleting via mdutil. Reboot, then also trying the recommended Machintosh HD drag into privacy and out again. I've done them all. I've added bootcamp to my privacy and also sugarsync drive and also my incomplete torrent folder.
I've re-indexed my drive, it's just no longer funny anymore. The problem is that the indexing process is running away. I check it via fs_usage for mds, and I can see the files it's opening and writing. This is not mdworker which matched my manual activity, e.g. if I make a numbers worksheet background, then of course it saves the file automatically and I can see in mdworker that it quickly indexes that file and stops.
The culprit is mds. It just continually indexes certain folders and files, which are just normal files and folders which I work on, e.g. my business documents, mail download mailboxes, iphoto library, etc. There doesn't seem to be a pattern to what it's doing. The files and folders run so fast over the terminal screen when I use fs_usage, that I know it's mds, because I can tell the activitiy matches the lines written to the terminal screen.
The problem is that this mds and HDD activity is NOT accompanied by any message in the little blue spotlight window, that is is currently indexing the drive. although it sounds exactly like it IS indexing the drive. Surely it doesn't have to reindex portions of the drive again and again. Shouldn't there come a point when it completely stops?
Normally, I have a silent computer after some indexing completes, but mostly it lasts only a day and then it starts chugging again.
Apart from re-installing, which I really don't want to do. What else is there I can try.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below to select it:
    syslog -k Sender mdworker -o -k Sender mds | grep -v boxd | tail
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Post the contents of that window (not the Terminal window), if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.
If any personal information appears in the output, anonymize before posting, but don’t remove the context.

  • Spotlight still indexing after upgrading to 10.6.7

I upgraded my 3-1/2 year old black MacBook to OS X 10.6.7 the other day, and after I rebooted, Spotlight began indexing my drive and has been stuck at "Estimating index time" ever since.
Is this a known issue, or am I the only one?
I'm not sure why it started indexing again, but how can I get it to stop?

    Hi,
Try to stop NAT, than start Setup Gateway Assistant again, may be help.
Note: you should be sure your firewall is in correct setup. My NAT some time stop and can not start again because of my firewall "open" much ports than nessesary.

  • Spotlight keeps indexing

    hi,
The Time Capsule at work stopped taking backups of my machine on July,1. For my colleagues, it still works fine. I also noticed spotlight keeps trying to index the disk.
As a solution I removed the latest backup (indicated with 'inProgress' and I verified the disk with disk utility. I took 3 days, but mentioned no errors. I tried a couple of times to restart the backup, and now it finally seems to work again. Backup works (but very slow), however spotlight keeps indexing.
I already tried restarting the spotlight server, but it does not help. I tried other suggestions on the web but nothing seems to work...

See #D2 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).

  • Spotlight random indexing?

Yesterday I was erasing an external 40 gb hard drive through disk utility and the program seemed to have froze since it never updated the time remaining (53 minutes). That drive may have some bad sectors. So I just forced my computer to shutdown and unplugged my hard drive (via usb). Today morning when I started the computer, Spotlight was indexing my computer. Did i mess something up because I pulled the hard drive out? Or is this due to me copying 4 gb worth of files from the drive before erasing it? Ive heard that this done if a drive is failing, is that true?

Hard to tell, but in Spotlight's Pref Pane>Privacy tab, add all your drives to that to stop Spotlight from doing it's thing until you get it figured out.
Try Erasing the drive again with the Security option of Zero Data once.

  • Spotlight keeps indexing external set to Privacy

After completing a SuperDuper backup Spotlight started indexing all of its contents ('30 hours remaining...'). To stop this I dragged the backup image into Spotlight's Privacy panel, but to no avail. To stop the indexing I had to do a force unmount of the external drive. Somewhere else I read that as soon as the drive is dragged into the Privacy folder Spotlight's indexing stops. Is this how it is supposed to work?
    Thanks in advance

Well, this time immediately after SuperDuper started doing its backup operations I went to Spotlight's Privacy panel and added the SuperDuper image there, and Spotlight didn't index anything. So I suppose this is the way it should work.

  • Why won't it stop indexing

Everything is indexing...spotlight is indexing...then my usb drive-with all my DISSERTATION work is indexing...my seagate backup took what felt like the time it took the **** moon to form to just process...Why is this fresh **** upon me? I am not tech savy-I can't "command" the indexing to stop. I am literally being driven insane by this.

You are indeed. It did it a few days ago. But the odd part seems to be that it is repeating itself. Or, rather, won't stop? It hasn't done a full on "indexing all night long" session, it just does it long enough (say, 45 minutes) to make me want to punch my own face inside out, as it prevents me for doing the one tiny thing I need to be doing-searching for files...Then it ceases its madness for a while, or so I believe, until I realize it has shifted to needlessly indexing my USB drive! It's like nanobots out to repair things in no need of repair!
If I just leave it alone, if I don't won't on my computer (the mere suggestion is madness!)... and just step away from it, just become one with my frustration and grade student papers or something, will it just index itself into pure bliss and stop the madness eventually?
Thank you for the reply and direction which moves me away from self-harm.

  • Spotlight stops searching contacts

Hi, this one is a 'baffler' - new state of puzzlement.
After upgrading to Mountain Lion spotlight would occasionally stop searching my contacts, the artist previously known as Address Book. The Spotlight preference box for Contacts is ticked, and the Privacy tab does not have anything listed. Occasionally it would start searching Contact again after a re boot, but this is a mac and shouldn't need that. Now even that doesn't work, I can't get spotlight to search contacts at all. I have also added my HD to privacy, then removed it off forcing it to re index everything, which takes a while. It would work after that then stop after a few days.
I am normally not alone if ever I have a problem and find helpful solutions in forums etc. But alas, I seem to be on my lonesome on this cold dark night.
    Any help appreciated, thanks.

I am on OS 10.8.2, All Latest Updates, MacBook Pro 17', SSD all maxed out.
I don't remember having this issue prior to OS 10.8.2, to which I Upgraded from 10.7.4.
I did not try Deleting any Files or Folder to fix this yet!
I did recently Signed Out and back Into iCloud while on call with AppleCare.
This issue of - Spotlight Stops Searching Contacts - comes and goes!
This issue existed before and after my Sign Out and Into iCloud!!!
Below is the Log of my Latest Research:
    Thursday, November 15, 2012
Re-indexed Spotlight on my MacBook Pro by Dragging my Macintosh HD in and out of Privacy Tab in Spotlight!
54 minutes remaining at halfway point. Looks like it could be a two hour project!
That took 1hr 9min on my SSD!!!
    Problem still exists
Time Machine Backup ran during Re-Indexing, but I decided to let it do its thing!
    Unchecked Contacts in Spotlight
    Restarted
    Checked Contacts in Spotlight
Problem still exists  - even if it worked for the l1nu5r post on Apple Discussions below
    Saturday, November 17, 2012
After 2 SuperDuper Clone Backups + Time Machine Backup - All Contacts can be Searched in Spotlight!!!! The Issue Fixed itself - All Contacts could be Searched in Spotlight, but... That "success" lasted only for a day:)!
    Sunday, November 18, 2012
After my SuperDuper Clone Backup, Contacts could not be found, even after UnMounted External HDs, turned them off and Restarted, and Shut Down my Mac twice!
I Edit a Contact and that Contact showed up in Spotlight, but only that Contact
I did a Safe Boot - Nothing in Spotlight was available except Web and Wikipedia
I Shut Down for 2 min and Restarted. Spotlight did some more Indexing for about 1 minute!
That Edited Contact showed up in Spotlight, but only that Contact
    My Best Guess:
This issue appears to be related to iCloud!
I hope Apple is reading this and all our posts!
Apple is welcome to call me...
I will be calling AppleCare soon!
I hope All Our Dots Will Connect, so that this Issue is fixed!!!
    Stay tuned!

  • Spotlight forever indexing

Can anyone indicate how I can get spotlight to index properly?  I've tried suggestions such as:
Placing HD in Privacy and then removing.
Using mdutil to stop and restart indexing.
    Cursing.
