Spotlight time remaining 9835645 hours....

Yeah... The time doubles every 10 minutes :/
A new harddrive is in my MBP, cloned all 5 partitions back and it's running fine.
But Spotlight seems to be having a lot of trouble. I tried starting over but it kept saying "calculating" at last i deleted the invisible spotlight files on each partition and that jumpstarted Spotlight. It started at "Estimated time remaining 3 hours, 2 hours, 1 hour... 340 hours, 780 hours" and more ever since.
Any ideas on how to go at this ? Help greatly appreciated as the Spotlight index is making my mac slow. I have not ran the 10.5.7 update yet (judging by the problems on this forum it did not seem like a good idea) and the harddrive is a 500GB Western Digital 5400rpm.
Thanks,
Jay

After rebuilding the spotlight index again with Onyx and a restart after it seems to be working.

  • Back up to i cloud. Time remaining 50 hours

    Hi
I have updated to ios5 and am trying to back up 9.6 GB of data from an iphone 4 to icloud (I have bought 15 Gb of space).
I am trying to do this wirelessly, but each time it estimates that it will take 33 hours . Is this normal? How can i speed it up? My internet download speed always seem fine but is this a problem with the upload speed?
As a test, i turned off the wireless on the iphone and manually attached the iphone to itunes using a usb. I kept the selection "backup to icloud" (as opposed to the pc) checked and it took 10 mins. Did this back up go to the icloud though? Or did it go to the pc?  It seemed far to quick to have gone to thne cloud and the "last backed up to icloud" time did not change.
Also the back up this was was listed in preferences under devices which is where the pc backups go I believe.
    Thanks in anticiaption.

Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup > iCloud Backup
If that is On (green) then it will automatically backup when the phone is on, plugged in, locked, and connected to wifi. I don't know of an option to do it by any time setting such as daily or weekly although you could manually make that happen.

  • Time machine goes on calculating time remaining in macbook mavericks

time machine stops at some point while backingup my macbook;it goes on calculating the time remaining for hours;i tried all possible things like renaming, erasing ,repairing permission  the external HD

The time capsule drive is full, but I just assumed that Time Machine would erase the oldest backups and continue.
Ordinarily it will. Do you have other data on the drive? If so, it appears that other data has completely filled the drive, so much so that Time Machine can't even start the hidden log it keeps there.
Error writing to backup log. NSFileHandleOperationException:* -[NSConcreteFileHandle writeData:]: No space left on device
Usually when that happens, the backup crashes.
First, cancel the backup. If it won't cancel after a few moments, see #D6 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html].
Then connect via an Ethernet cable if at all possible. Time Machine needs to do some intensive work, and it will be slow even via Ethernet, but 2-3 times slower via WIFI.
If there's other stuff on the drive, you could copy some of it elsewhere temporary and delete it. You only need to free up 50 MB or so.
But your best bet is to delete your oldest backup(s), then "compact" the sparse bundle they're in, to make some space. See #12 of [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html].
Since it's been several weeks, you may want to delete roughly one old backup for each of those weeks, then "compact" the sparse bundle. If you only delete one, then Time Machine will have to delete more, but it will delete one, dismount the sparse bundle, compact it, then remount it to see if there's enough room. That gets repeated over and over until there's enough space.
Once this is sorted out, if there is other stuff on your TC's internal HD, see #Q3 in [Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule|http://web.me.com/pondini/TimeMachine/TimeCapsule.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).

I am trying to do a full Time Machine Backup to a new external disk. The backup starts, and it says "Time remaining about 4 days." That seems like a very long time, but the real problem is that the computer "logs off" after a few hours, and the backup stops. The system preferences are set to "Never" for Computer sleep and Display sleep. The computer does not ordinarily log off automatically, but it has done this twice since I started the Time Machine backup.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message. Clear the text field and scroll back in the log to that time. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the search box.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

  • I created an iCloud account and also had to get more space after I have done the purchase, I am unable to backup my phone! I have a stable wifi connection at home and all I see for hours and hours is "Backing Up .. Estimating time remaining"!!!!! Plz help

I created an iCloud account and also had to get more space so after I have made the purchase, I am unable to backup my phone! I have a stable wifi connection at home and all I see for hours and hours is "Backing Up .. Estimating time remaining"!!!!! Plz help I'm unable to make the backup as I need to transfer all my data on my new iPhone 5S

This may be caused by a corrupt existing backup that needs to be deleted, or by data on your device that is causing the backup to fail.  To troubleshoot these, try deleting your last iCloud backup (if you have one) by turning off iCloud Backup in Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup, then tap Manage Storage, tap your device under Backups, then tap Delete Backup.  Then go back and turn iCloud Backup back on and try backing up again.
If it still won't back up, you may have an app or something in your camera roll that is causing the backup to fail.  To locate which one, go to Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup>Manage Storage, tap the name of your device under Backups, under Backup Options tap Show All Apps, then turn them all to Off (including camera roll) and try backing up again.  If the backup is successful, then the camera roll and/or one of your apps is causing the backup to fail and you'll have to located by process of elimination. Turn the camera roll On and try backing up again.  If it succeeds, turn some of your apps to On and try backing up again.  If it succeeds again, turn some more apps to On then try again; repeat this process until it fails.  Eventually you'll be able to locate the problem app and exclude it from your backup.
In the meantime you can back up your phone to your computer by connect it, opening iTunes and going to File>Devices>Back Up.  Also be sure to transfer your purchases (File>Devices>Transfer Purchases).  Then set up your new phone and when given the option, choose Restore from iTunes Backup and follow the prompts to restore this backup to your new phone.  This will be much faster than using iCloud anyway.

I set it to start restoring from the 3GS backup yesterday at 1pm and the time remaining kept on increasing. I left it overnight and at 9am this morning the progress bar hadnt moved and it said 12 hours remaining.
I don't know why its taking so long. I unplugged it and it just set up as new phone. So i did a factory reset and tried again at 4pm and it is now 12am and it says 4 hours remaining and my computer occasionally flickers. (Its not a bad computer, 2 months old, i7, 6GB RAM, Heaps of HDD space). It also messes with google chrome and i cannot browse the web at all while it is trying to restore my iphone.

    Hello lyndsey1430,
From what I can gather, it sounds like you're having issues restoring your device. After reviewing your post, I have located an article that can help in this situation. It contains helpful advice concerning recovery mode:
If you can't update or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
    Use recovery mode
You might need to use recovery mode to restore your device in these cases:
iTunes doesn't recognize your device or says it's in recovery mode.
You see the Apple logo onscreen for several minutes with no progress bar.
You see the Connect to iTunes screen.
Learn what to do if you see the progress bar onscreen for several minutes.
To put your device into recovery mode, follow these steps:
Turn off your device and leave it off.
Plug in your device's USB cable to a computer with iTunes.
Hold down the Home button on your device as you connect the USB cable. Keep holding down the Home button until you see the Connect to iTunes screen.
When you see this screen, release the Home button. If you don't see this screen, try steps 1 through 3 again.
When your device is connected, iTunes will open. You'll see a message saying that iTunes has detected an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch in recovery mode.
Use iTunes to restore your device. Restoring in recovery mode will erase your device. If you previously synced with iTunes or iCloud, you might be able to restore from your backup.

Learn what to do if you don't see your device in iTunes for OS X, or in iTunes for Windows.
If you put your device into recovery mode by mistake, restart it. Or you can wait 15 minutes and your device will exit recovery mode by itself.

  • Installing Maverics: time remaining about 120 hours

I'm installing Maverics from t'ha Apple Store.
Downloading took less than 30 minutes on my high speed connection.
After reinstalling Maverics is installing saying 'Time remaining: About 120 hours and 17 minutes'
    i don't want to spend 120 hours!!!
    please help.

Problem seems solved. Remaining time didn't change but the Mac rebooted. Now says 'Completing installation... About 4 minutes remaining'
    That sounds much better.
Anyhow it seems Maverics has a problem estimating installation time.

  • I am transferring contacts from my old iphone to my new iphone 4. The screen has had 'restore in progress' on the screen for 20 hours now with time remaining going backwards. Is this normal? Should I let it go on?

No, that is not normal. I guess you are trying to restore from the latest backup created by your old 3GS?

  • Why is a download update for 1 item increasing "time remaining" and is already over 2 hours?

I am not very adept at this stuff.

"Time remaining" is based on expecatations of internet speed.  This expectation gets "smarter" as there is more data.  So it seems that you must be on a very slow connection, or one that is much slower now than it was when the download started.

  • Time Machine spends hours partially backing up and then fails with "Time Machine couldn't complete the backup due to a network problem."  Tried suggestions I've seen on the forum.

Time Machine spends hours partially backing up and then fails with "Time Machine couldn't complete the backup due to a network problem."  I've tried various suggestions I've seen on the forum but nothing has worked.  TIme Machine worked fine for the last two years and just suddenly started having this problem every time.  The only thing that was a little different is that the computer was off for a week while on vacation and then I added a large amount (20 GB) of photos. Now the requested backup size is 82GB, which is large, and process proceeds very slowly for 2-3 hours before failing with the message mentioned.  I have more than enough available backup storage space for it.  Before failing, Time Machine has backed up no more than 12GB or so of the backup.  It fails during different files each time.
I've turned off the computer sleep feature, and I've checked that the NAS is set to never automatically power down. I normally backup over Wi-Fi, but I've also tried connecting to Ethernet and it still has the same problem.  It's odd because I also have a MacBook Pro that is still backing up fine to the same NAS using the MacBook's Time Machine.
I am using an iMac with OS X 10.6.8 and an Iomega StorCenter ix2-200 NAS.
I have system logs that I can share if helpful.  The logged messages vary a bit from run to run, but here are some messages that I've been seeing:
I always get this message near the beginning of the backup:

I doubt it's a problem with something in OSX being damaged or corrupted, but reinstalling OSX isn't a major hassle, so might be worth a try.
To be incompatible with Snow Leopard, this NAS must be at least a couple of years old.  It may be beginning to fail.
Contact the maker.  See if there's an update to make it compatible with Snow Leopard.  If so, that might fix it.
If not, or if that doesn't fix it, see if they have any diagnostics that will shed any light.

  • Media encoder time remaining stops decreasing and processor drops to zero. Time elapsed keeps going up! File won't complete!

    Please help anyone who can.
Firstly I know I have very little RAM on my system, only 4GB but I've been rendering the same kinds of files for weeks with no problems until the last few days.
They biggest issues is as follows:
My timeline in Premiere Pro CC 2014 has 1080p 50mbps MXF footage from a Sony PMW 200 and some similar footage replaced with an After Effects comp for green screen keying.
The clip, approx 2min, starts with a linked comp from after effects, then cuts to the mxf footage and back to a linked comp at the end.
I am exporting via media encoder to h264 1080p. The file rendered fine for about 40min with the processor at 50% approx. The processor then shot up to 99% for 10 mins and the render progress bar
went up to almost 90% complete.
Then the progress bar stopped, the processor dropped to 0%, time remaining is steadily climbing and so is time elapsed. I've tried pausing and un pausing the render que and nothing else is running in background.
I need these files rendered tonight!! I've tried this a few times and this problem keeps occurring sometimes with the remaining time shooting up to 74 hours!!
Can anybody tell me what I'm doing wrong?!
    Windows 7 Professional (64 bit)
    Dell Precision workstation 690
    Intel xeon X5365 3ghz (x2)
    4 GB RAM

Sounds exactly like what is happening to me.  This is frustrating because it was a 30 hour encoding process and the place where it is stuck is right at the very end of the sequence on the 2nd pass, although there is still about 12% of the progress bar remaining.  I guess that this is where it takes all its work and puts the separate files into the single video file. I really don't want to go through this again. The final video file is showing up though and is shown having the size that I am expecting it to be.
Any workarounds to somehow get this unstuck?  I am hesitant to just try and open the file. I am going to try a couple of things and if I am successful at getting this to finish without restarting then I will be sure to post it here.
Also, I don't know if this has anything to do with this problem, but I looked at my system Activity Monitor, and there is a CPU process highlighted in red, it states:
         Adobe QT32 Server (not responding)
    Thirty minutes later...
I was incorrect above as to the actual problem.  I paused the queue encoding that was stuck, then opened up the project again in Premiere Pro only to discover that there was an offline still image which I stupidly had renamed during the day. So I renamed the file back to its original name, reconnected the picture, saved the PP project. Then I started the encoding back up and still no luck.
So I paused the encoding again, went back into the PP project and rendered just the area under question, saved it, and exported it into the queue. Then just to be safe I went to the paused item in AME, and duplicated it adding another version into the queue.
Then I unpaused the encoding and ... SUCCESS!!  Not sure which of the final steps did the trick, but I am guessing that it was the rendering of the part of the sequence that it was stuck on.  Hope this helps someone.

  • Battery time remaining (how to properly charge macbook pro retina)

I'm a new macbook user, using a macbook pro 15 inch. I've been plugging in my charger when the battery gets down to around 20% and unplugging it when the light turns green (at 100%). I thought macbooks had a battery life of around 7-8 hours, but at fully charged, my time remaining (when I click on the battery icon the top right) says 5 hours. Can a  more experienced user correct me on as to what I am doing wrong in charging my macbook?

Two points:  The 'Time' setting is one of the most unreliable pieces of information on your MBP.  I set mine to '%'.  What it tries to show is based on what the MBP is doing at that very instant.  If you open Activity Monitor, you will see that the internal processing is very volatile.
What Apple advertises as time on a full charge is based on ultra conservative settings and use.  It doe not reflect the 'real' world.  Read the fine print and note the words 'up to', nor will, guaranty or promise.
Your battery run time will be a reflection of what applications you have open and the respective resources these applications require.
Here is a link to some good information regarding your MBP battery and its usage.  This will give you something to do for the rest of the afternoon.

  • Why doesn't dimming my screen affect the estimated battery time remaining?

rMBP 15". The brightness of my screen greatly affects the battery life. At near-full brightness it will discharge from 100% to 20% in about two hours. At the lowest brightness setting, it lasts between four and five hours. However, when I click the battery icon and hold it down, the estimated time remaining doesn't change regardless, despite the obvious and significant difference between the two brightness settings, all other things being equal. Is there something I can do to make this estimate more accurate?

For more detailed information about battery charge, try Activity Monitor.

Click the "Energy" tab at the top of the Activity Monitor window.
At the bottom of the same window, there are 3 sections with details battery charge.
    Best.
