Spotlight web search mod_spotlight_apple docs

Anyone have anymore info regarding Spotlight on OS X Tiger Server?
I have gotten this to work but I can't search for file names. I can find the content of any document. I just can not find it by the name of the document or folder. Any ideas?
Also how does it handle a symlink to another volume that is also indexed?
Setup info here: http://insomniaxe.com/machin.php?mfeed=mod_spotlight
but I need to be able to search for file names. Maybe this will be available in Leopard Server.
G5 PowerPC   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Mr. Jobs was pretty clear on the stage at WWDC06... Leopard Server's going to have a much improved Spotlight search + enterprise search.

  • Enabling Spotlight Web Search - Multiple Search Terms and Boolean Searches

    Hello there,
I'm trying to incorporate a spotlight web search into my website as per these articles:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=ServerAdmin/10.5/en/c3ws21.html
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA23537?viewlocale=en_US
What I'm finding is that the search page provided by using template.spotlight file does not give search results when more that one search term is entered. Additionally, boolean terms (AND, OR, NOT) do not appear to work.
I've tried to edit the template.spotlight file but I'm not sure what to add in order to provide this functionality which is otherwise present in spotlight searches within Mac OS. Has anyone else used the spotlight web search feature for their websites and had success with multiple search terms / boolean searches? Could someone please advise on how to edit template.spotlight to provide these search features?
    Thanks in advance,
    Leon G

  • Spotlight web search

Where is IOS7 spotlight web search
i know that you can swip down at any app page to active spotlight search, but how to search in WEB or Wiki?

Hopefully it will be a quick update available very soon !
To search the web nothing has been faster than iOS6 spotlight search: swipe, type word, hey presto !
Now in iOS7 it's: return to home screen, safari app, top of screen, delete existing text, type word, press go
It's fractionally slower, and if you use apple devices all day for business, it's an annoying step backwards. Chatting with colleagues here and abroad, nobody can suggest a logical reason for removing it.

  • Web Search not working in Yosemite Spotlight

    Hello,
One of the major features of Yosemite was that Spotlight could directly return web search results. But unfortubnaltly that isn't working for me.
Anyone else facing this issue or has already figured out a work around for this?
    Regards,
    Kartik Gaje

    Go to terminal and enter:
    rm -f ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Spotlight.plist
This will delete the preferences file. Restart your computer and it should work.

  • How to fix spotlight doesn't search movies, places or bing web search?

spotlight doesn't search movies or anything bing web search, it only search file on my mac in yosemite. How can i fix this???

    Hello arnoota,
for me Spotlight's content search works for docx, too. Are the info in your signature correct? If so you should install the 10.5.4 update of Leopard! At least for 10.5.3 some changes concerning Spotlight are documented by Apple, so probably this issue got fixed as well with one of these two updates.

  • Forcing spotlight to search the web

Is there a way to force spotlight to search the web. In other words, I'd like to force spotlight to send my search query to bing directly.
    Any ideas?

No, it's not OK. Not quite. Almost OK.
But if that's your skill level, you don't have a hope in hell of writing a program to search the Internet for anything at all. Not yet.

  • Spotlight no longer showing "web search" feature

    Hello all,
I just upgraded to Yosemite and everything looks great so far except for 1 thing that I used a lot in previous OS X versions.
I used to open spotlight and type my internet (google) search there and just click on web search. Ever since I upgraded I can no longer find that feature although Its marked as checked under system preferences, spotlight, bring web searches.
    Any help?
    Thanks

you have to include system files in a search. they are excluded by default. enter command+f in finder to start finder search. click on "kind", scroll and click on "other". in the resulting popup select "system files" and change the setting to include them in the search. if you want to make this default see this macosx hint

  • Spotlight not offering any new Yosemite results (Wikipedia, Maps, App Store, Web Search etc.)

    User from Europe (Finland) here.
    Problem:
My Spotlight only offers local hits (including limited local dictionary results) which is very gimped down version of what is advertised.
"Spotlight pulls information from new sources like Wikipedia, news sites, Maps, iTunes, movie listings, and more." from https://www.apple.com/osx/design/
    Screenshot with simple example:
    So far I've tried:
Made sure I have everything checked on in Spotlight preferences.
    Rebooted.
Forced Spotlight to rebuild its index by first excluding Macintosh HD and then removing it from exclusions.
    Rebooted again.
Made sure location preferences that system services has access to my location.
Made sure there is no firewall restrictions, proxies etc.
Tried to change Safari search engine from DuckDuckGo to Bing
    Removed Adblock extensions from Safari.
I have no idea why my Spotlight isn't working as it's supposed to be.
Spotlight calculator and unit conversions work fine.
As an European I'm used to getting the cold shoulder from various nice iOS features (no movie listings in Siri, for example) but I cannot think why Wikipedia or Map results would be removed from Spotlight if I'm from Europe.
Any help would be appreciated but complete reinstall of Yosemite is unfortunately out of the question due to work.
Another example of Spotlight failing to offer anything from the web.

Added an example of a completely empty Spotlight result and small further info.

    Hi there Usernamenotok,
You may want to take a look at your Spotlight Suggestions and Location settings. The page below form the USer Guide has more information.
About Spotlight Suggestions - Mac Help
If you do not want your Spotlight search queries and Spotlight Suggestions usage data sent to Apple, you can turn off Spotlight Suggestions. Simply deselect the checkboxes for both Spotlight Suggestions and Bing Web Searches in the Search Results pane of Spotlight preferences in System Preferences on your Mac. If you turn off Spotlight Suggestions and Bing Web Searches, Spotlight will search the contents of only your Mac.
You can turn off Location Services for Spotlight Suggestions in the Privacy pane of System Preferences on your Mac by clicking Details next to System Services, then deselecting Spotlight Suggestions. If you turn off Location Services on your Mac, your precise location will not be sent to Apple. To deliver relevant search suggestions, Apple may use the IP address of your Internet connection to approximate your location by matching it to a geographic region.
Information collected by Apple will be treated in accordance with Apple’s Privacy Policy, which can be found at www.apple.com/privacy.
Note: Spotlight Suggestions may not be available in all regions.

  • Yosemite Spotlight Bing Web Searches Not Working

    Hardware/Software:
    Macbook Air Mid 2013 1.3Ghz 8GB RAM 120GB SSD / Mac OS X Yosemite 10.10
    Issue:
Bing Web Search in Spotlight does not produce web results, Spotlight still only searches for local content. Spotlight Suggestions works fine though.
    Troubleshooting:
Ticking/Unticking the Bing Web Searches option in the Spotlight Menu, Restarting.

I have same problem and even ticking/unticking does not work for me. Now my spotlight is still searching local content only...

  • Spotlight Google search in Safari gives Google links in Cyrillic characters

It's bizarre, I know, but when I use Spotlight as a quick access to Google, the page comes up with the Google links (Web, Images, Groups etc. at the top; Cached, Similar pages after each entry) displayed in Cyrillic characters in a language I don't know, although the search results are in English, in Latin type. But when I navigate to Google, all the text comes out "normal" in English, in Latin type.
I presume this is somehow due to settings going astray but I can't find how to locate the settings to change them.
    (a) Does anyone know how this is happening?
    (b) Does anyone know how to fix it?
For the time being I just don't use the Spotlight Google search in Safari, but it would be a useful shortcut to be able to use it.
(Posted here on the premise that it is a Spotlight rather than a Safari problem, but also under Safari because it relates to that too.)

Try quitting Safari. Then select Safari in the Applications folder and Get Info. Deselect any Language you don't want. Close the Get Info window and reopen Safari to see if the problem is corrected. If not, you might try trashing the com.apple.Safari.plist file after quitting Safari.

  • Spotlight not searching on Bing

    Hello,
I just installed Yosemite on my rMBP and i was trying to figure out how to make the spotlight search things for me on the internet via Bing. When they presented the OS, if i remember correctly, they made a search for the keyword "Yosemite" and the spotlight returned a Wikipedia page with infos about "Yosemite". Well, i have everything ticked (including searches on Bing) but if i search for "Yosemite" or anything else i won't get the web search response.
Also i found a bug, if you switch to less transparency mode, the icons that appear on the screen when you lower/increase brightness/volume have some black corners (basically the images are not displayed properly).
    Thanks

Go to the System/Spotlight preference pane and in the Search Results pane check the Bing Web Searches checkbox.

  • Spotlight Google Search

I'm trying to find a way to do this...
Closest I got was some add on from apple > downloads but... it only works on Tiger.
... even then it should just be built into Spotlight. It "should" be.
iOS4 has it.. couldn't there be a simple patch that fixes this?

I'm not sure why -you- would use it if you already had Safari open.
    I know why I would though =)
I'd like to be able to cmd+space, type my search, and click this "search the web" button I'm looking for which would then open a new window (or if preferred, a new tab) with the search results.
Since I've had my Mac I've written an app that opens a prompt, you type in your query, click okay, then a second prompt asks what kind of search you'd like to do. Like web, image, video, or news search (web being the default.) It then takes that string and opens safari  using that thread as part of the URL.
This as been... ok for me so far but there is still no real keyboard shortcut that runs this app. That.. and it's not nearly as fast to open as Spotlight is.
My thought, then, is how can I make a keyboard shortcut do a google search. Well... why doesn't spotlight do that? It searches your email for Pete's sake.... It can't handle a basic web search?
    Or can it?  O.o
That leads me to here. The discussion board for all things OSX 10.6.4!
And so ends my journey. Curious and alone. Lost in a world of hopelessness and tears!
    No solution thus far.
    Sad... sad sad day.

  • Spotlight stops searching contacts

Hi, this one is a 'baffler' - new state of puzzlement.
After upgrading to Mountain Lion spotlight would occasionally stop searching my contacts, the artist previously known as Address Book. The Spotlight preference box for Contacts is ticked, and the Privacy tab does not have anything listed. Occasionally it would start searching Contact again after a re boot, but this is a mac and shouldn't need that. Now even that doesn't work, I can't get spotlight to search contacts at all. I have also added my HD to privacy, then removed it off forcing it to re index everything, which takes a while. It would work after that then stop after a few days.
I am normally not alone if ever I have a problem and find helpful solutions in forums etc. But alas, I seem to be on my lonesome on this cold dark night.
    Any help appreciated, thanks.

I am on OS 10.8.2, All Latest Updates, MacBook Pro 17', SSD all maxed out.
I don't remember having this issue prior to OS 10.8.2, to which I Upgraded from 10.7.4.
I did not try Deleting any Files or Folder to fix this yet!
I did recently Signed Out and back Into iCloud while on call with AppleCare.
This issue of - Spotlight Stops Searching Contacts - comes and goes!
This issue existed before and after my Sign Out and Into iCloud!!!
Below is the Log of my Latest Research:
    Thursday, November 15, 2012
Re-indexed Spotlight on my MacBook Pro by Dragging my Macintosh HD in and out of Privacy Tab in Spotlight!
54 minutes remaining at halfway point. Looks like it could be a two hour project!
That took 1hr 9min on my SSD!!!
    Problem still exists
Time Machine Backup ran during Re-Indexing, but I decided to let it do its thing!
    Unchecked Contacts in Spotlight
    Restarted
    Checked Contacts in Spotlight
Problem still exists  - even if it worked for the l1nu5r post on Apple Discussions below
    Saturday, November 17, 2012
After 2 SuperDuper Clone Backups + Time Machine Backup - All Contacts can be Searched in Spotlight!!!! The Issue Fixed itself - All Contacts could be Searched in Spotlight, but... That "success" lasted only for a day:)!
    Sunday, November 18, 2012
After my SuperDuper Clone Backup, Contacts could not be found, even after UnMounted External HDs, turned them off and Restarted, and Shut Down my Mac twice!
I Edit a Contact and that Contact showed up in Spotlight, but only that Contact
I did a Safe Boot - Nothing in Spotlight was available except Web and Wikipedia
I Shut Down for 2 min and Restarted. Spotlight did some more Indexing for about 1 minute!
That Edited Contact showed up in Spotlight, but only that Contact
    My Best Guess:
This issue appears to be related to iCloud!
I hope Apple is reading this and all our posts!
Apple is welcome to call me...
I will be calling AppleCare soon!
I hope All Our Dots Will Connect, so that this Issue is fixed!!!
    Stay tuned!

  • Stop spotlight from searching CDs

    Hey, quick question!
Is there any way to stop spotlight from trying to search on CDs? I keep my Call of Duty 2 cd in my drive a lot, and it's really annoying to have to wait for my drive to spin up for every spotlight search I do.
    - Walt

    Hello Walt.
I don't believe Spotlight is searching the CD unless you have requested Spotlight to do so.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301533
Mounted CDs or DVDs are not included items in the Spotlight preferences Search Results.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh2160.html
    Copied from this link.
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/stopspotlightindex.html
Spotlight will begin indexing any volume as soon as it is mounted, with certain exceptions: CDs, DVDs, and network-attached or shared volumes are not indexed when mounted.
