Spotlight will not search...

Here is what happened.
Finder hard crashed so badly that it required that I shut off the computer.(Mac Pro) I could not even bring up force quit.
When it came back up, Spotlight just would not search. It would come up, but typing in a term would do nothing, not even the spinning progress circle.
I did the steps to add the hard drives to the Privacy tab in preferences and removed to force the reindexing the drives two times now. Even after that, it still produces the same action. I can type in the search term(s) and nothing happens.
I will try to repair the disk permissions later and another account, if it is the user account, how do I repair mine to work? Also, could it be something else?
Mac Pro 2.66ghz Mac OS X (10.4.8) </span

You may want to repair the disk (filesystem)-not just permissions-since you had to force the computer to shut down before.
To do this, restart the computer from the OS X installation DVD by holding [C] as the computer starts up.
After the language selection, select Utilities>DiskUtility from the menubar and run the Repair Disk option.

  • Spotlight Will Not Search Contents

    PowerBook 10.4.9
I have read every thread here and tried every trick listed.
Terminal, Spotless, Disk Utility Verify, Repaired Permissions, Reindexed every way I can think of, deleted Bluetooth phones, Restarted numerous times, put the Home folder into Privacy and then deleted it, Safe Boot and a bunch of other stuff I can't remember.
No matter what I do though Spotlight will only find file names, not content. I have everything in the preferences clicked on to search and have tried numerous combonations of checking and unchecking to no avail.
    What is the deal?
Non of the threads on this fix the problem. It just cropped up in the past few days and has stiffled my workflow. Can't search Mail Messages using "Entire Meassage" and can't search for documents based on content.
Will Apple please fix this! Is there some application conflict?

The processes you should see associated with Spotlight are:
    mds - the search engine
    mdimport - the indexing engine.
-They should both always be there, though they will use 0% CPU until you save a file or run a search.
If mdimport is no longer running, that's your problem. It may be crashing at some point. Do you have any files with a lot of content that it could be getting stuck on?
If can't think of what might be causing it, you can use the Privacy pane to add all then remove one at a time, the folders in your home folder while watching for the mdimport process in Activity Monitor.
To start-and to verify that it is something that can be fixed this way-try first adding the hard drive to the Privacy pane, restart, then open Activity Monitor. Watch Activity Monitor for the mdimport process when you pull the drive out of Privacy.

  • Spotlight will not search Calendar events past one year (?)

I have many years worth of events in my Calendar and I transferred them all to my iPod Touch since I need to refer to old events (freelance jobs) for work needs. Spotlight searches will not show events older than 1 year (which would be a ridiculous limitation). Anyone else having the same experience?

I am here looking for a solution to the same problem. Who writes a Calendar search function that only goes back 1 year? (I mean, really) I have to go iCal on my iMac to find older events, and my events go back 10 years these days since I use the Calendar as a type of journal (the calendar data were imported from my Palm III -> V -> Vx -> Zire). Most annoying during meetings when I continually have to respond with "I have to get back to you on that" on anything of personal historical significance. Is there nothing out there that will do an exhaustive search? Please don't tell me I have to wait for my computer science students to get a job at Apple to have this feature properly implemented.

  • Finder will NOT search current folder

I've searched online and the Apple Community for an answer but none correct my problem.
My Finder window will NOT search the current folder.  I have gone into Finder Preferences to ensure that SEARCH CURRENT FOLDER is chosen.  It is.  I have rebooted my computer and Finder, cleared the cache etc to no avail.  iMac 10.7.5 and  Macbook Pro  10.7.5
These are the instructions I'm following, which require a search on sub.
    http://www.webtechgadgetry.com/2013/12/mac-osx-tip-add-icloud-photo-stream-finde r-sidebar/
    ~/Library/Application Support/iLifeAssetManagement/assets/sub
When I type CMD + F, I only get a search on whatever folder was selected at the time I searched, not sub.  Ugh. Worked perfectly on my Macbook Pro.  Not so much on my iMac. Thanks in advance for you assistance.
Picture below:  Go to folder search
Next Pic: Search above finds sub folder and it is highlighted.
Next Pic: After  CMD + F, You can see in the search bar, SUB is not shown.

The folder is not indexed by Spotlight. Open the Spotlight preference pane and check the Privacy settings. If the folder, or a parent folder, isn't listed, add it to the list and then remove it to rebuild the index.

  • My mac mail will not search mail anymore and doesn't load attachments anymore

Does anyone know why this would be happening?
My mac mail will not search mail anymore and doesn't load attachments most of the time.  When I enter some text in the search box no results come up and I know there are messages that contain the phrase that I've entered.
Also about 3 weeks ago attachments only get loaded about 1/4 of the way - if that.  So I have to log onto my web based mail program from the host and retrieve attachements or check the messgae with my iphone.
Please - does anyone know how to fix this?

I figureed out that spotlight was turned off via terminal -  I shut it off to unmount a disk (which didn't work anyways)
    sudo mdutil -a -i on
that's the termianl command to turn spotlight back on.  As far as my attachments not fully loading in mac mail on my iMac that still baffles me.

  • My wifi will not detect networks and will not search for other networks when I search for them. Do I need a new iPhone or can I fix it myself?

My wifi is on and when it tries to find a wifi connection, the gray little circle just keeps spinning and will not detect our home wifi. I have tried to search for it and connect to it manually, but it will not search for the network name. I'm hoping I don't need a new phone so please help.

  • My Firefox will not search for websites

My Firefox will not search for websites etc. I put in a parameter and it will not do anything. When I use anything else (such as Yahoo! search) it works fine. I type in a word/website/name etc. into the search box on Firefox and nothing happens. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox and still it won't work.

A few notes for the morning:
    (1) If you used the Reset Firefox feature, a folder will have appeared on your desktop named Old Firefox Data. Please retain that folder so you can revert your Reset if needed.
    (2) I don't know why you would intentionally open the IP addresses of servers that have demonstrated their untrustworthiness by relaying spam to you. If you want to find out who controls a server, you can look it up on one of the regional registries for IP addresses:
    * RIPE (for Europe): http://www.ripe.net/ (RIPE Database search box mid-page)
    * ARIN (for North America): https://www.arin.net/ (Search WHOIS upper right)
    * APNIC (for Asia): http://www.apnic.net/ (Whois Search to the right of the image)

  • FF4 home page will not search.

Having just upgraded to FF4 I find that it will not search anything from the Mozilla home page. I can open bookmarked sites or use the search box in the toolbar.

Do you have that problem when running in the Firefox SafeMode?<br/> ''A troubleshooting mode.''<br />
1.You can open the Firefox 4.0 SafeMode by holding the '''Shft''' key when you use the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut. <br />
    2. Or use the Help menu item, click on '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' while Firefox is running. <br />

  • Addressbook will not search

    My addressBook will not search
Do I need to reset the dataBase thingie or somethingie else?
    Thanks
    Tom

    Back up all data.
In Address Book, select File ▹ Export... ▹ Address Book Archive... from the menu bar, and save the archive to your Desktop.
If you use iCloud, disable contact synchronization in the iCloud preference pane. When prompted, click Delete From Mac. Re-enable synchronization. Wait for the contacts to re-synchronize, then test.
If you don't use iCloud, or if the contacts fail to synchronize, delete all contacts from Address Book, then select File ▹ Import... and import the archive you created. It may take a few seconds for the contacts to be indexed. Test.
If you don't like the results of this procedure, quit Address Book. In the Finder, select Go ▹ Go to Folder... from the menu bar, copy the text on the line below into the box that opens, and press return:
    ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook
Restore the folder that opens from the backup you made before you started.

  • Search Store box will not search

The box will not search when I enter an artist or song in the box and try to search.  Nothing happens when I click.  The artist's name does come up, but will not search.  It was working fine until today.

Update:  when I type a search name of any kind in the box, the cursor will stay at the end of the search name I have typed in.  I click search icon or the suggestions underneath & will not do anything & cursor stays in the search box.  What could I try to make it work correctly again?
    Thank you

  • After updating to 4.3.5, spotlight does not search within text messages

    HI,
I just updated my iPhone 4 to 4.3.5 and Spotlight does not search within the text of my SMS text messages any more. It only searches by the name of the SMS senders. There does not seem to be any setting I can adjust and I have restarted the phone several times but nothing changed.

I figured out how to get it working while retaining your data.
Connect your phone and perform a full backup.
Erase all data/media or restore the phone
Select setup as a new iPhone when prompted in iTunes.  Give it some other name (i.e. "New").
Grab a copy of iBackupBot from here http://www.icopybot.com/itunes-backup-manager.htm
Run iBackupBot and select the new backup
In the file list, locate the file name SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist
Open the plist be double-clicking on it.
Copy the contents of this file to clipboard.
Select the full backup of your iphone under it's original name (make sure to grab the one with the latest date).
    Locate SystemConfiguation/preferences.plist
Scroll to the bottom and note the Hostname for your phone.
Replace the contents of this file with the that from the "New" backup making sure to change the hostname and phone name in the last section of the plist.
Save the changes to the plist.
    Connect your iPhone to iTunes
Right-click on it and select "Restore from backup"
Locate the latest backup under your phone's original name
When it's done restoring and reinstalling your applications, you should once again have push notifications that work over the cellular network.
