Spotlight Works only Intermittently

I've tried the add then delete location in the privacy tab as suggested in the Lion manual: to fix the buggy Spotlight service (their words). Sometimes Spotlight works, other times, nothing. Why is it SO difficult for OS X 10.7.4 to maintain an index? What am I missing to maintain a stable index database? Are there some other settings besides Spotlight preferences? Thanks for any help. This is frustrating!

What do you mean by "works only intermittently"? FWIW, I use a tailored savedSearch, which always works. As for other ways to control the indexing, see the Terminal command mdutil.

Spotlight working only intermittently on xserve RAID

I have an xserve RAID connected to an xserve and spotlight search works sometimes for some people and then a few minutes later it works for other people but not the ones it was working for originally.
I have tried forcing spotlight to reindex the RAID but that didn't help, users can search inside folders on the RAID but not the whole RAID itself.

This is INSANE! Apple should just take the Server Spotlight promise off their website. Is this working for anyone? Of course, I went off and told my client to upgrade to the Leopard server for exactly this service. Now we're back to using EasyFind which still finds files twice as fast as Apple's Finder Find command. BAH!
Okay - for the record:
I forced the mac to re-index Spotlight using Cocktail - and it did that (this is the internal system drive that also has share points on it).
Spotlight finds perfectly fine from the Server's Desktop.
If I sign in from a client as admin and click on "Shared" and "File Name" it will find the files - but not all of them - that match a search. (ie if I am looking for files with "07-0782" in the name and type "07-078", I get them all. If I add a "2" to the end of that, it drops a couple of the files off the list - files that clearly have "07-0782 in their name.)
Content search returns nothing - ever.
If I sign on as a regular user - I never get anything searching with "Shared" chosen in the Finder window, but if I click on the quoted folder name between "This Mac" and "Shared", it seems to do a manual (takes a minute or two depending on depth of folder) and does return results - although I swear EasyFind is faster.
I assume this might have something to do with permissions. But every folder has always had all users as part of the group with R/W permissions and "others" set to read. According to the Spotlight Server rules - anyone should be able to search if there is "read" permissions set to the share point. Anyway, I re-propagated the permissions - no help.
Phew... there's more oddness, but this is the gist of it. I did do a regular upgrade-install from a 10.4 server could this be the problem? - but erasing and re-installing doesn't seem to have helped others. Right?

Mid-2010 macbook pro mini display port to hdmi works only intermittently

I have a 13-inch mid-2010 MacBook Pro running OS X 10.10.2. HDMI out from mini displayport to my Dynex TV only intermittently works. The times that I have gotten it to work involves a combination of restarting the computer, unplugging the TV and plugging it back in, then plugging in the MDP adapter. Now when I plug it in, the MacBook screen flashes black like it is trying to detect the external display, but no picture on the TV. Any help would be appreciated.

Why does clone stamp work only intermittently?

I'm cleaning up a photo before I optimize it and put it onto the web. This is a JPEG. I've created an action for a specific size using just the selection tool. Then I adjust the levels, the color sometimes, and the brightness. Then I click on the clone tool, sample the area I want to clone with the option key, release the option key, and try to place the clone. I see every indication that I'm creating a clone, but when I go to place it, nothing happens.
Keep in mind that this is intermittent. In fact, I was working on a photo a few minutes ago, and I was able to clone something, then I sampled another area to clean up something close to it, and it just stopped cloning!
I've tried duplicating the background layer where the photo resides and working on the duplicate. Nothing. I've tried deleting the locked layer. Nothing. The "Aligned" box is checked. Opacity and flow are at 100%. Mode is normal. Airbrush is not being used. Nothing.
I've tried closing the document and reopening it. Sometimes it helps, sometimes it doesn't.
I'll futz with it a while and then it might just start working again. But this time, when it stopped working on the photo after it had just worked, I knew it probably wasn't user error. Or is it? I didn't do anything different except to sample a different layer. Heck, I even unplugged my Wacom tablet.
Any thoughts? Please?
I'm on a MacPro running 10.5.5. I let Adobe do its updates, so I'm running 10.0.1 for PS. I do not run Version Cue, but I do use Bridge (love it in CS3). I have 4G of RAM. I hope I've given you enough info.

As for the workspace, I've already mentioned that it did *not* affect my workspace after all because Adobe has so brilliantly separated out the different kinds of preferences. Very often when you trash the preferences, you lose all kinds of customized settings. I know I have run into this problem in the past with Adobe products. Apparently they have made great strides.
I discovered that in the Adobe Photoshop preferences folder, there are several different preferences that control various aspects of the program. I took out the one that looked like it would do the trick, placing it on my desktop just in case. I relaunched Photoshop, knowing that doing so would recreate the missing preference file, and it resolved the issue.

Why is my bonjour working only intermittently with itunes

I have an existing airport extreme wireless set-up that works well.
However, iTunes only occasionally shows the library of the laptop on the desktop and conversly the desktop on the laptop. Why is this not happening every time both machines are awake and iTunes open?
Is there something I have to trigger to get this to work?

OpenGL enhancement works only intermittently

I'm using the trial version of CS4. Even though I'm using a low grade video board (Radeon X1300), the openGL features work - sometimes.
I can't figure out why, even though it is enabled in preferences, the graphics acceleration doesn't work. But at some other time it does work. Often I can rotate the canvas, or the animated zoom and flick pan and smooth odd magnification levels all work, and then not. In all cases, the feature is enabled in preferences.
Is anyone else having this problem?

Sounds like a resource problem. The card seems to only do so many processing cycles and when its internal caches are filled, it doesn't flush them properly so no additional processing can happen. This possibly could be merely a driver problem where the graphics system is not receiving the correct commands or not interpreting PS' resource requests properly, so that would be something to look into...

Touchstone works only intermittently!

My touchstone doesn't appear to be working. It sometimes will work, and sometimes it will charge for a moment stop and then charge again. I hear the BuBing again and again and again as this does this which drives me (and my wife) crazy!
I have adjusted it's position on the touchstone without any success. The same thing happens with the touchstone at the verizon store.
The USB charger always works.
It seems to work after I plug the USB directly into the Pre and let it charge for a little while or after I reset the phone. But, this doesn't always fix the problem.
I use the clear case that i bought at the verizon store.
The Verizon store wasn't very helpful ( and pretty rude). She just resetted the phone and it worked for 5 minutes. Then when I got to work, it started with the BaDing cycle. I charged it for a bit with the USB, and now it worked again for about 5 minutes.
I haven't found help on the Pre Central forums.
The touchstone is such a cool concept, and should be very convient, but if it only works 80% of the time, it is effectively useless!

Two notes: Have you tried charging it without the case. Some cases are not compatible even when they indicate they are. This will determine if the touchstone is at fault or if it is the case interfering with the signal. If you are still having problems with the case off, then you have afaulty touchstone and you should return it for a new one.
Second, I also don't like the noise the pre makes even when I plug it into the USB or use the touchstone, so....
I downloaded the application called web os quickinstall which can be found at precentral.com. You can find other links to it all over the net. Just make sure you get the most recent version. I think it is 3.1 or 3.2. Within web os quick install you will find hundreds of "patches" and free apps that can be instantly loaded onto your phone. Patches custom modify how the phone looks and operates. One of those patches allows you to turn off the tone that the Pre makes when is starts to charge whether you are using the USB or the touchstone.

Caller ID works only intermittently

Over the past week or so, we have received quite a few calls where the caller ID never shows up. We only get an "Incoming Call" message on the phone but it doesn't then display the ID. There doesn't seem to be much rhyme or reason regarding which calls work (we get the ID) and which do not.
This is on a copper landline.

I'm having the same issue. Tested using my cell. Worked fine yesterday, but not today. People that call me all the time and their CallerID would show up, no longer appear all the time. Very random. I though it was the Cordless set, so I purchased a new set today ($116). Same problem. Tried putting the Base Unit on different jacks within the house - same problem. Tested it at the NID. Same problem. Verizon reports no outages in the area, so "it must be your phone."

Power button works only intermittently

Hi there,
When I try to turn on my macbook pro, (bought in October of 2009), it now takes several tries at times. For the first year and a half, I never had this issue.
A couple months back, it would only turn on if I unplugged devices connected via USB (external mouse, Internet stick) but at least then the computer would turn on, but not fully boot up.
Now, it sometimes doesn't turn on at all. My sense is that this is a separate issue. When it doesn't turn on, the little white light on the front right of the case comes on. I hold the power button down again, and there's a faint sound, and the light goes off. Sometimes, on the next try, the MBP will turn on, sometimes it takes 3 or more tries.
I'd take it to an apple store, but I'm in a small town in South India, and there are none nearby. I'm hoping to get some input before making a long treck to a bigger city so I can have it looked at.

i brought it to apple support and it turns out there was so much humidity in my room that that's what caused the problem. They opened it up, dried it out and it worked again.
I'm in Goa Indis right now, and it's monsoon season. Plus, I lived in a place right near the ocean. This is probably an unusual set of circumstances but I figured I'd add the solution in case somebody else ever runs into this.

IPhoto '11 (9.1 build 475) works only intermittently

The newest version of iPhoto (9.1 build 475) is constantly annoying me. I have had several crashes, and have sent in the crash reports, but my issues have not been addressed. The newest version will take over a GigaByte of memory just to open. When it does open, it does so slowly, many times crashing. Same when it closes- sometimes it hangs and never actually closes. Activity Monitor shows CPU usage at over 100%.
I have reset plist files, rebuilt library, cleared caches, fixed permissions, fixed thumbnails, cleared duplicate fonts, removed avi files from iPhoto library, removed divx codecs, and other things (thanks to the GREAT help here on Apple Discussions!) to try to get iPhoto working correctly. Nothing has consistently helped.
I have many photos tagged with Faces and with Places. If I completely rebuilt the Library, is this information lost? I spent lots of time adding this information, and would hate to see it wasted.
Not to mention that I, too, am unhappy with some of the functionality changes in sharing photos by email, or burning a disc to share photos of an event with a friend. I am quickly considering "down"grading to iPhoto '09.

The Library sounds "permascrewed" as the rebuid tools won't work and the back up is faulty.
Upgrading from to 9.1.5 did not require the Library to be upgraded, so that's the point at which iPhoto saw a problem.
No, there's no evidence of an issue with larger libraries, at least not on here.

How do I keep a page as my home page when dragging icon to left of URL to house image & confirming that I want it as home page works only for current session, so when Firefox next opened, I end up with some stupid search page which McAfee doesn't like?

A couple of days ago, I connected to the Internet as usual & opened Firefox, only to be greeted by an almost blank screen with a Google-type search box in the middle & this message from McAfee:
"Your default search settings have changed. This may pose a security risk. Would you like to restore them to McAfee Secure Search to provide a safer searching experience?"
instead of my usual home page (BT Yahoo). I naturally clicked on the "Yes" option in the message, but rather than restoring my BT Yahoo home page, all that did was to insert the McAfee logo to the left of the search box in the top right-hand corner of the screen. The first time it happened, I had to search for the BT Yahoo page & then followed the standard procedure for setting it again as my home page. It worked only for that session: each time I shut down Firefox or restarted my computer after that, all I got was the blank "search page" & restoring the previous session was the only way to get back to BY Yahoo. How on earth do I make the home page setting permanent?
As far as I'm aware, I have done nothing to alter my search settings. However, I am anything but computer-literate, so I may have done/pressed something without realising it, but trying to understand what is now happening is far beyond my limited IT skills.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).

If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all your extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
You can use "Disable all add-ons" on the ''Safe mode'' start window.
You have to close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (on Mac: "Firefox > Quit")

iCloud should still help you reduce some hard drive space. Just select "optimize" in the icloud tab in Mac Photo App preferences.
Granted, not the same as completely offloading your library to a back-up drive at your location.
