Spreads -- best way to print

This question has come up because I received a phone call from my printer on Friday, during the middle of a print job on an iGen, saying he couldn't print my PDFs as spreads.
Now, before anyone says "Change printers", I'm not doing that. I'm going to train this one up. He and his dad have had thirty years experience in offset printing and about 5 years with an iGen. But I suspect their digital expertise is not really as good as it could be. So I'm going to help them out, with help from the experts here.
Previously, I have had no problems because I provided him with PDFs already in spread format. This time, the first file was a spread-format PDF, but the rest were single-page PDFs which I asked him to print as spreads. He printed the first file okay, but then I got a phone call.
He was adamant that his system (I think he mentioned a Creo RIP) couldn't print spreads. It could impose (32-1 etc), but couldn't print spreads.
So, to get the print job back on the road immediately, I imported the PDFs into InDesign and uploaded the InDesign files with links to the PDFs he already had. Then I suggested he print with Spreads selected, or use Print Booklet and choose 2-Up Consecutive. He choose the latter and called me a few minutes later to say it worked.
I'm not really happy with having to import the PDFs back into InDesign so that he can print them (it's an extra step for errors to creep in) and would like comments from readers re the three methods listed below. But first a question:
QUESTION
Is it possible that a printer could have a million dollar iGen, a Creo (?) RIP, and all the associated software that must come with the system, but not be able to print spreads from a single-page PDF? Maybe I've got the wrong terminology and I've sent him looking for the wrong thing. What name should I use: "facing pages", "spreads", "2-Up Consecutive"?
He has InDesign CS4 and Acrobat Professional. Assuming that he really can't print spreads using his normal method of printing PDFs, what are the pros and cons of:
Method 1
Print from Acrobat Professional, using the Multiple Pages Per Sheet option available in the Print dialog box. It works on my system.
Method 2
Import the PDFs back into InDesign and print as spreads.
Method 3
As per method 2, but use Print Booklet and 2-Up Consecutive.
Any comments most appreciated.

I'm a bit confused, bmcprint, by your explanation. What do you mean by "paginate single pages". I got the impression from the printer, but I didn't pursue the point as I wanted the printing to get underway, that he could impose 32-1, 2-31 etc but not 1-2, 3-4.
If I have to import the PDF into InDesign, and that allows him to get results, there's nothing much wrong with that I suppose.
I want to stick with this printer because he's trying to make a go of this new technology and he's got the personal touch. Whereas in the case of another printer I approached for a quote (a quote I would have had no difficulty in accepting because it was a cheaper), I feel two or three steps removed from the process. I get to talk to someone in the office, who may return my calls that day or may not -- meetings are regularly in progress -- and that person hasn't actually operated the iGen, though she will talk to the production manager for me. It's all a bit distant.
I'm paying extra, and spending more time sorting out the difficulties, but everytime I call the fellow I can hear the iGen in the background. I like that.
Anyway, that's not what this post is about. Is there any real difference between the three methods I listed, or will they all just as easily achieve the same result, once I have the PDFs back in InDesign?

Depends on what you want printed. You can do something like System.out.println(myTable);but you may not like what you see. If you want to print anything else, extend JTable and create a new toString() method that prints out what you want.
    As for printing a SQL statement - assuming it is in a String, you can just do System.out.println(mySQLStatement);

  • Best way to print from application

    Hi!
I have an application handling employee information. I'm trying to figure out the best way to print all information liked to an employee. What is best? I want to generate the page with a good layout, not just plain text(pictures, different fonts). I've tryed to draw strings on a picture but there are problems with page brakes. Is it hard to generate html files from xml, and are there any good tutorials or is it better to use html?

  • Best way to print an image multiple times on same sheet and not lose quality when doing so

    Hello,
I have the full subscription to Adobe Creative Suite, but am unfamiliar with almost all of the programs. I have used Photoshop a bit, but not too much.
I have this project I do several times a year, and am sure there is a better way to do it.
I am sent a colourful excel spreadsheet - a schedule. I print a bunch of copies full size, then need to print 8 copies on a single 8.5x11 piece of paper.
I've tried several methods - but want to know what the best way to retain the best quality would be.
The best I've done (and I'm not totally happy with) is to copy the image into Photoshop, save as a PDF, create 7 more copies then merge as a single PDF and print.
I do find that the quality does suffer a bit.
Can anyone suggest a better way?
    Thanks in advance.
    Amber

With all the apps at your disposal, that is a long way around. Granted it is hard to not loose quality/data when scaling. But it makes sense to create the document to your liking, then create a new document that is 8.5" x 11" and place the original into it. Then using guides or alignment tools, duplicate that image.
This allows you to have full control over the location of each image, and extra data needed like captions, names, etc. and how that data is formated.
Luckily you have multiple programs that can accomplish this. Some are easier than others, some are more robust than others, etc. In the end it is what you are familar with and how much time you can spend on learning while getting the job done.
Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign are all your go to programs from creating anything for print and they can be used for other media as well. But that is their strong suite, print.
All three apps have their own dedicated forum on this site, so go ahead and mark them as your favorites as your questions for each need to be in their respective place.

  • Best way for printing

...I am wondering which is the best option to make
JPEGs for an external printing service.
JPEG is a lossy format, meaning some image data is lost with every save to JPEG format. That means that best files for print submission should be non-lossy TIFF or PSD files when possible (e.g. when you are delivering files on CD/DVD).
That said, prints of well shot images from files saved once as JPEG-12 quality are indistinguishable from prints of the same files saved to TIFF.
As you go down the JPEG quality scale from 12 to 1 quality gets progressively worse.

  • What's the best way to print pictures from my iPhone?

I have a lot of pictures on my iPhone 3G and iPhone 4S and a few on my iPad 2 and they're taking up a lot of space, what's the best way for me to print them out?

Import them to your computer and use your computer's photo app to print them.  Once they have been imported, you can delete them from your phone.

  • What is the best way  to print the contents within a scrolling textbox in a fillable form?

I have created a form using Acrobat 9 Pro which contains several text boxes that allow for unlimited text.  When printing out completed forms,  any text that requires scrolling will not print.  Is there any way to be able to print the contents of all text boxes regardless of length of content?

Yes, when you set the font size to Auto, the font size shrinks to include all the entered text in the visible area. Otherwise the hidden the text is not displayed and you see observe a "+" sign. You might also want to consider the option to make your form flowable using Adobe LiveCycle Designer.

  • What is the best way to print a CD Label

I am not a web-designer or work in advertising. But I do have lots of DVDs and CDs I've created (most of them are videos & photos of my daughter) and currently I am only labeling them with a marker.
I really want to have a nice looking (somewhat professional look) of CD Label. I purchased those CD Labeling Kit, but I want to "customize" my label, not using one of the free template that they've given. I do have several of CD Labels made and they turned out ok (I use Photoshop CS). But everytime I print a CD Label, it always take me 3 to 4 times to get it right. This really has wasted me ink. What I meant to "get it right" is the print is printed exactly or a little bit more than the "circular" part on the sticker. Also, some time what looks good on the screen, it came out fuzzy on the printout (eventhough I printed it on 300 dpi).
Anyway, what's the secret to print a customize CD Label, and got it printed exactly on the circular part of the label/sticker? Is it wort it to get one of those printer that can print the label straight onto the CD? I heard that in the long run, having the sticker is not good.
    Any suggestions is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    amanda

    amanda:
I use Discus 3.6 which is a label program which is packaged with Toast.
You do have to have a tempate holder to stick the label on the CVD.
There is no question that printing on the disk is the best solution especially with DVDs as they spin much faster than CDs.
I have had some issues with other people reading the DVDs and that may be attributed to that missalignment or the burning speed.
In Toast there is a method of burning slection. Be careful as there are CD speeds and DVD speed slelectons. Use the right one.

  • Best way to print source code and relationships

I am the IT director for a medical technology company - we use Labview for our proprietary software.
We have need to print all of our VIs, source code/block diagrams and the relationships between the modules. I know how to do this and the options which are available (for complete documentation, using as a sub vi, etc).
I have found that printing to PDF is great for an electronic copy as everything can be zoomed in on and read; but I need paper printouts as well.  When printing from windows onto paper many of the diagrams are printed so small it is hard to read notations, etc.but my question is as follows:
I am wondering how other people/companies have tackled this when there is a need to document everything within labview on paper?  Ideally we could end up with a book which has enlarged sections and could relate one page to another with metadata (sort of like those guide book maps - EG on the edges of the pages other pages are referenced for a continuation of the view).
I am open to other suggestions though. I guess I am wondering if there is a better way because the way I am considering doing this will be quite time consuming.

When I was in the Air Force tech orders (manuals) typically had drawings that were too large to fit on a single page. The way they handled it was to have pages that folded out. Obviously you couldn't print these pages on a standard printer, but you could show diagrams without a lot of rescaling.
Of course no printing scheme will work if the code is written badly (i.e. in adequate modularization, using sequence structures, wires running every which way, bad layout, etc.).

  • The best way to print a small poster?

I am a hobby user (Illy CS3) and don't have access to a printer to print anything larger than DIN A4 and I need to make a small poster.  I've made a collage as a gift consisting of photos of friends with their well-wishes in speech bubbles.   I was thinking of exporting it as a .jpg file and uploading it to an online photo service to have it printed.  If I make the artboard the size of the finished poster (e.g. 50 cm x 75 cm) will this work ok?  If so, do you have any tips on the settings I should use when making the .jpg file?  Or should I do something else altogether?
I would appreciate any advice you have to offer.
    Thanks
Updated:  the collage was done in CS4 on my daughter's computer, but whether CS3 or CS4 probably doesn't make any difference.

A large size photo print will be expensive. Better to use a quick copy centre like Kinkos. Call digital print shops in your area and find out how large then can print. For not much more than a couple of bucks you should easily find 11×17 or 12×18. Even larger shouldn't set you back as much as ten bucks.
Whatever size you decide on, set up your document to that size and scale all artwork. The finished, scaled resolution of any imported images should be 200 pixels per inch or better for best results. Use File > Save a Copy to save a PDF as Press Quality. Turn off Include Illustrator Editing Capability.

  • Best Way to Print multiples in CS4

Ok, I have been hating this for a long time, so thought there might be a better way to do it.
I frequently get a list from my boss of a bunch of photos to print 4x6 (Epson R1900) there might be 10 or 100 different photos. Most of the time, I don't need to do any correction just print.
In CS/CS2/CS3 I had an action that called the print dialog and selected Scale to fit and 4x6, closed the photo, etc.. Photoshop always says that all actions can't be saved here-- ERR! So if I were to do a bunch, I would print the first one manually, then fire the action on the rest. (why can't Photoshop remember all the print settings?)
That worked well until CS4. I have the CS4 suite on XP. If you use "Scale To Fit" in an action, it crashes Photoshop. I have tried it on two Windows systems (XP and Vista/64) and it crashes EVERY TIME on both systems. Someone else tried the same action on the NAPP forum and confirmed a crash also.
Ideally, there would be a way for me to select 50 photos in Bridge and click a button and have them all print 4x6 to my Epson R1900.
Any recommendations on how to deal with this? Getting the action to work would be good, but surely there is a better way to do this!
I know I could use my MacBook Pro and it will run the action just fine, but I really would like to get this going on the main system here at the office.
    Thanks,
    Kirk

This isn't a direct answer, but QImage from DDISoftware was designed to print photos packed optimally on as many pages as it takes, and will interpolate and sharpen to the native resolution of the printer (or a fraction thereof) so there's no need to resize and sharpen, yourself.
    http://www.ddisoftware.com/qimage/
There is a trial version and a support forum that the author of the program uses to answer questions.
The program is made to do everything itself and has a built in browser, but it can be hooked up to programs that have an "edit in external editor option" for multiple photos, and also works or as a drag-and-drop target for multiple photos, so it will automatically open with the selected or dragged photos already added to the print queue.  The core functionality has been around for years, and the author is mostly occupied with UI enhancements and RAW conversion sophistication in the "Studio" version, but I never use it for RAW conversion, just to print photos.
