Spreadsheet couldn't be imported

I am trying to open an Excel 97-2003 worksheet in Numbers. I am opening it from the Mail app. It acts as if it is importing, then once it gets to the end, it prompts the following message -
Spreadsheet couldn't be imported. The document can't be opened because it contains cells outside the boundaries of Numbers"
The Excel file has 7 worksheets in it, each using rows 1 through at most 1,200 and columns A through X. I would assume that Numbers has a limitation on the number of cells a document can have. I cannot find any info relating to this error. Is there any documentation as to what these limits are?

I don't know what the limit is on the iPad version of numbers, but I am certain that there is a knowledge base article on the limitations of number of populated cells in numbers documents. Since the iPad only has around 250mb of actual usable memory (that's the number I heard online where they broke it's components down), I can see your spreadsheet being way too large as your talking over 200k data cells.
Of course we haven't seen apples actual numbers on this yet , so at this point its speculation that this is your problem.

  • 1) How do I restore a spreadsheet that says "Spreadsheet couldn't be imported. An error occurred." & 2) How do I prevent this from happening?

    Several times on my iPad, I have been getting the following message when trying to open a Numbers spreadsheet that I've been working on:
    "Spreadsheet couldn't be imported. An error occurred."
    The icon had already turned into a generic Numbers icon at that point in time, and the iPad doesn't allow me to email this file. I would then try to recover it on my iPhone, but Numbers/iCloud had already automatically deleted it. I've tried resetting my iPhone & iPad and restoring the previous day's data, but my hard-earned work was still gone!
    This was a fairly large spreadsheet that I would make changes to multiple times throughout the day with either my iPhone 5 or 3rd Gen iPad. They are both updated with iOS 6.1.2 and Numbers 1.7.2, and both have iCloud turned on for syncing Numbers documents. I travel and work throughout the city on a daily basis, so I get a mixture of connection speed from LTE, 4g, wifi, to none.
    I've made it a habit to make additional copies of my spreadsheets each week, and now I'm resorting to making additional copies at the end of each day. Sooner or later if this keeps happening, I may have to make annoying copies of the file every time I make a minor edit. This isn't how iCloud or anything from Apple is suppose to work. Please help out with this problem.
    Thank you in advance.

    Thanks den.thed,
    Apologies for not replying back sooner - I've been away.
    Although your suggestion helped me in getting a copy of Lion that I could use, it didn't help with the restore from Time Capsule issue.  I had to download the Lion app onto my MacBook & then transfer it across but it wouldn't let me upgrade my OS for some reason, so I ended up wiping the iMac completely and restoring via my Snow Leopard install disk.  For some reason, this time, it let me have the option of using Setup Assistant to access the Time Capsule for a complete restore.
    Now, over a week later, with various bits of tweaking and reinstalling some apps that didn't seem to come across, I have my system back.
    Thanks for the help anyway.
    Cheers,
    Paul

  • "Spreadsheet couldn't be imported. Out of memory."

    I can't open a 3MB excel file that has several sheets, including one with a few thousand rows.  It says I run out of memory.  Is filesize my problem?  If so, what is max size?  I also heard rumors that multiple sheets and lots of rows could cause problems.  Using iOS 4.2.8 (8E401).  Lots of memory available on my phone.

    I wouldn't be surprised if a "few thousand rows" had the effect of causing a complaint from an iPhone. In Numbers terms, a few thousand rows is large even on a Mac, but not large enough to choke it.
    There's an iOS community that might be better able to answer your question:

  • Spreadsheet can't be imported.

    Spreadsheet can't be imported.
    The document was created with an unsupported application version.
    I only keep 6 of my most used spreadsheets in iCloud at the moment.  Yesterday, out of the middle of nowhere I have received the message above when I try to open 2 of my 6 spreadsheets using iOS or Numbers on Mac OS.
    All 6 of my spreadsheets have worked for better than 2 weeks after upgrading to both the new versions of Numbers for iOS & Mac OS.
    One of these I have a offline version that with a little work I can bring back to what I had before this incident.  The other I created in the iCloud and have never downloaded an offline version.
    1.  Does anyone know why I'm having this problem?
    2.  Does anyone know how to bring them back?
    Thank You!!

    They may have become corrupted by editing on both the Mac and iOS or iCloud and the resulting sync conflicts failed to resolve correctly.
    The document will be on your Mac, and hence available in Time Machine, if you have been syncing Numbers docs to iCloud. It sounds as if you have been doing that, but just in case, check to see that you have had iCloud sync for Numbers activated in System Preferences.
    If you did have these turned on, then you can find your Numbers documents that were stored in iCloud by doing this: in Finder hold down the option key and choose Go>Library in the menu. In the Library navigate to the Mobile Documents Folder and within that you will find a subfolder named com~apple~Numbers. Your Numbers documents will be in there. You can enter Time Machine to go back in time to an uncorrupted version and restore it.

Appears a small window that says "importing" and give to play in the source window and start .Audio be heard, but not the image. I've tried different video formats and always the same. When attempting to open a spreadsheet, I get a pop-up that says "Spreadsheet could not be imported.  An error occurred"  Does anyone have any ideas on why this is happening?

    I am unable to read any Numbers files in any app, other than the Apple Numbers app, on an iPad using v7.0.2. I can still view them on an iPod using v6.1.3.
    Something has changed but I am unable to figure what.

  • Spread Sheet Couldn't be Imported, Spread Sheet couldn't be opened because it contains cells outside the boundaries of numbers. Has any one had this problem? It is an excel file that works fine on my mac.

    When I try to import an excell file to numbers on my ipad i get an error message that says it cannot import the file or open the file because it contains cells outside the boundry of numbers. Any one have this problem. it is only one file that i have this problem with and it is an important one. I have no problem working on it with my mac and my excell for mac.

    Number is limited to about 65000 cells so if your Excell spreadsheet is too large Numbers will choke.  This is definitely one of the weaknesses.  If you don't have Excel you can use LibreOffice which is free.

  • I have iPhoto 11, 9.4.1 installed. When my library was upgraded, I got a message the photos couldn't be imported and I need to repair iPhoto permissions. How do I do that? My photos are there, but I can no longer drag them to the photo stream.

    I have iPhoto 11, version 9.4.1 installed. When my library upgraded, I got a message that the photos couldn't be inported and I need to repair iPhoto permissions. How do I do that? My photos are there, but I can no oonger drag them to the photo stream.

    Disable Photo Stream in iPhoto's preferences and then go back and reenable it. See if that will jump start the process.  If that doesn't help try this:  make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:
    1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
    2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
    Click to view full size
    3 - launch iPhoto check its preferences to meka sure all is as you expect and try again.
    NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
    NOTE 2:  In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.

  • Document couldn't be imported. An error occured

    Tried opening my Pages documents on my iphone and get this error.
    Went to beta.icloud.com and get an error that says:
    Gilligan encountered an error and is no longer usable.
    Error occurred when handeling the erro:
    SecurityError: Blocked a framw with origin "https://www.icloud.com" from accessing a frame with origin
    "https://beta.icloud.com". Protocols, and ports must match.
    Javascript console contains more info.
    Tried opening a numbers file from my iphone and that worked just fine.

    Hi,
    I got the same error when using Pages for iCloud beta in Chrome. When trying to open an existing document or creating a new one, a new browser window is created, and that error displayed. Copying the URI in the web page to another tab in the main Chrome window solved the problem and the document opened fine.
    This is of course simply a workaround.

  • Can not import excel spreadsheet with more than one spreadsheet from an email

    i get excel files sent to me all the time by email and have been able to open most of them.  Went to a apple store and was told i needed to install numbers app on my iphone 4 to open them up because their was more than likely two or more work sheets in that file. i am on the road and can't get to my imac.  I bought numbers did all the updates on the iphone and sync to itunes.  it still cant open the spreadsheets if they have more than one work sheet. it does ask do you want to open in numbers i answer the question it starts the import then get error message spreadsheet couldn't be imported.  the file format is invalid.
    this is frustrating to by an app that was suggested by apple for the solution and it doesn't work.
    by the way i have excel on the macbook pro and imac so that is not an issue need to be able to see on the phone while traveling.
    by the way it says microsoft excel 97-2004 worksheet 16 kb open in "numbers"
    Any suggestions

    Hi Caroline
    you should be able to apply the exact same principles to your multi query report. The XML will have a main root node and then the results of the queries underneath.
    So if you had 3 queries you'd get something like
    <REPORTNAME>
    <G_FIRST_QUERY>
    </G_FIRST_QUERY>
    <G_SECOND_QUERY>
    <G_SECOND_QUERY>
    <G_THIRD_QUERY>
    <G_THIRD_QUERY>
    </REPORTNAME>
    In the template you will be able to map on to the separate sections of the XML very easily.
    regards, Tim

  • Cannot Open Numbers Spreadsheet (Numbers on iPhone)

    I have a spreadsheet that I created and regularly update on my iPhone using Numbers.
    I recently upgraded to version 1.5 of the Numbers app. Since then, one of my spreadsheets won't open - tapping on the file displays the progress wheel for a second and then nothing. The spreadsheet in question is 2.3Mb and contains a large number of formulae. All of my other spreadsheets are unaffected. When I try to send it to email / iTunes, etc. I see the message 'Send "(null)" to iTunes as:'. When I tap "Numbers", the screen displays a progress bar and "Sending...", but doesn't progress any further.
    I used an application to recover the spreadsheet from the iTunes backup (http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=4974), renamed the resulting .numbers-tef filename as .numbers, but when I attempt to open the document in Numbers on my Mac, I receive the message 'The index.xml file is missing.'.
    I also cannot import the retrieved file to my iPhone. After uploading the recovered document via iDisk and attempting to import on my iPhone, I receive the message 'Spreadsheet couldn't be imported. Numbers only supports documents saved with iWork '09.'
    I opened the .numbers package and examined the index.db file and can see that it contains my data, but just can't figure out how to either:
    get it on to my iPhone;
    open it in Numbers on my mac.
    Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

    I received a message from the Apple team asking for a copy of the files I extracted. I have yet to hear back from them.
    I did download and install the latest version of Numbers for iPhone - 1.6. The spreadsheet that I was having all the trouble with - that I had left on my iPhone -  opened after a short delay and none of my data was lost.
    I was also able to email the spreadsheet to myself and transfer it to iTunes without issue.
    Problem solved!
