Spreadsheet software?

I've tried using Appleworks spreadsheet software for my former Excel documents but I need a feature that Appleworks doesn't seem to have -- separate tabbed spreadsheets within one document.
Can anyone recommend spreadsheet software for Tiger that has this feature (besides Excel)?

Both NeoOffice and OpenOffice can handle your Excel files and both are free. They are essentially the same program except that you need to have X11 for OpenOffice. NeoOffice uses Java, instead. Both apps are free.
Thinkfree also can handle tabbed sheets. Thinkfree has a free online/web version available that you might want to look at if want to covert a few spreadsheets.

Word Processing/spreadsheet software?

Hi... I have a very basic question:
I am considering purchasing a BlackBerry Curve 8310 (AT&T). I was originally considering the 8820 but it lacks a camera. I'd actually prefer the 8320 for the WiFi capability but don't like to go with T-Mobile.
Since all BlackBerry phones have the BlackBerry operating system - rather than Windows Mobile - does this mean there is no word processing or spreadsheet capability built in? (i.e. software similar to Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Or is there reliable and trustworthy 3rd party software that can be downloaded and installed on the phone? If having word processing/spreadsheet ability is an important feature to me, would I be better to purchase a phone that has the Windows Mobile OS...such as the BlackJack II ? I've also read very good things about that phone, primarily that is has 3G capability.
Is it also true that the 8310 can take only photos and not streaming video?

Few softwares and word processing programs had been built for blackberry mobiles that i know about. eText Editor & Word Processor 1.21 is a good one that i am using but needs a windows OS on your blacberry. Microsoft office is also out there for your blackberry. I think Jarte is also a word processor program that is available for Blackberry mobiles, you can read about it in a blog post Jarte word processor to make it sure if it is available.

I have a spreadsheet of web sites. I am looking for a way to open them in Firefox. I want to open 15-30 of them at a time to see what is English and what is safe for work.

Does your spreadsheet software show the URLs as live links? In that case, if Firefox is your default browser, you could click the links individually to load each site.
You also could try saving the spreadsheet as HTML and opening it in Firefox to ease that process a bit.
(Automating the process probably will take longer than doing it manually...)

I don't see any word processing except for very basic text editing. In addition to all the commercial software out there you can find a number of free ones such as Open/Neo Office, and Bean.

Spreadsheets

I downloaded the IOS-7 on my I-Phone 4S and Pad, now I can not open any spreadsheet on ethier device. I can open it however on my laptop. What is the solution to this issue. I email myself a excel spreadsheet and can open it in the email. I go to open it in excel spreedsheat and the same issue occurs.

IMHO -- "the right spreadsheet software" is a pretty tall order for anyone to provide you. To be "right", it must meet whatever criteria it is that you have for being acceptable...and no one but yourself can know what that criteria is. The only one that I have used is the ToGo apps that come with some levels of the BB OS...and they do a fine job of doing very very very basic stuff in spreadsheets. You can check them out at the DataViz site. You can research different alternatives via pretty much any popular search engine.

New IBM free download of "Lotus Symphony" spreadsheet

Will the new IBM free spreadsheet software "Lotus Symphony" work OK on an Apple Computer. When one goes to download it it gives a choice of dowloading into "Windows" or "Linux" but doesn't say anything about being compatible with a Mac. Anybody know if it OK to dowload to an iMac?

Help needed in understanding the concept of hierarchical queries

I really need help in this matter. I have a flafile containing about 4000 rows. It is from my supplier, it's structure is as follows:

My goal is to make a hierarchical query with the start with and connect by clauses. From what I have read is that I need to normalize the data of the flatfile.
How do I achieve a table which I can query so that the query will represent the hierarchy that exists. Namely
Pgroup
++Pclasse
Application Software
++Database Software
++Spreadsheet Software
So a 2-level hierarchy. I'd like to understand this simple concept first. I built on the knowledge that I gain. So the questions are:
1.What do I need to do to make the table so that I can use a hierarchical query on it?
2. How should the query syntax be?
3. Is it also possible to get the data in the hierarchical query sorted asec?
I would only like to use the simple structures of the start with and connect by clauses first. I've read there are some new additions to 10G. The problem with the examples used by the tutorials is that the tables are already made so that they are suitable for hierarchical queries. I hope to understand it by this example. And take it a step further.

Primarily hierarchy query serves to process tree-like structures which RDBMS simulates using through parent-child relation, often in a single table (see famoust
EMP table where employee can have the manager who is an employee at the same time).

Can I use a 2nd Monitor at 4K resolution (quad hd, 3840 x 2160 pixels)

HP Envy TS 17 Notebook, Product # E4S19UALaptop is running Intel HD Graphics 4600, and I have 16Gb memory installed. I use a 2nd monitor all the time via the HDMI port - works great. Both the laptop and the current 2nd monitor are running at 1920x1080 resolution (HD). I would like to attach a 4K monitor - (UHD-1) 3840x2160 resolution - 4 x "regular" HD (twice the horizontal and twice the vertical resolution). Will this laptop be able to operate the 4K monitor at 3840x2160 resolution (even at 30hz would be okay - not for games but rather for word processing, spreadsheets, software development)? Don't want to invest in the fancy new monitor if the laptop cannot drive it! Here is an exampe monitor: Samsung 28 Inch Ultra High Resolution LED Monitor (U28D590D), available on Amazon.com. Thanks!

Thanks for the information! As a suggestion, I have a copy of that manual, and it does indeed state precisely the information that I needed. Funny thing is, I looked in the TOC and the Index for anything related to external monitors and HDMI, and there wasn't anything that pointed to that page. Perhaps for future User's Manuals, the TOC and/or Index could include such references. Either way, thank you so much for the help! Also, for folks who are interested in higher resolution external displays, there is the option to use USB devices such as that from www.plugable.com to attach devices. I don't yet have their USB 3.0 4K compatible one, but I have been using their USB 2.0 HD compatible one for several years so that I can have 3 monitors (built-in, external, Plubable USB) - and it works very well. Flawless operation, though refresh rate is slow (not good for gaming). Which works for me, because it is mainly for surfing and email.

Can tables in Pages 5.5.1 be set up to fit Avery labels?

Can tables in Pages 5.5.1 be set up to fit Avery labels? I've tried to adjust the margins and the cells to sizes listed on the package, but I can't get them to fit properly. Also, when I try to copy information (return address with three lines of data) from one cell to another to fill in the page, the information ends up with one line each in three different cells. How do I keep it all together?

It will import information saved in Excel or csv formats which you can do from Numbers or other spreadsheet software.

Extracting rows that match a certain criterion

Hi guys,
I realize that spreadsheet software has certain limitations, but I was hoping I could stretch it a tad bit, by asking if it's possible to take rows that meet a certain criterion and have them listed in another table.
I've included an example wherein I take a list of a few well-known crypto characters and extract those that are not checked as evil (i.e., evil is FALSE) into a different list.

We have posted a solution but now I have to find it. You can test for the "TRUE" / "FALSE" nature of the check box then show related row/column information using VLOOKUP, and IF statements. You could then filter for the presence of a value.

Exporting Playlist as text file

Hi i want to Export my Playlist as text file listing, and send to a friend by email.
In other words i want to send a list of all my albums in itunes in list form. (not all the songs)
This should be simple enough, but i have wasted hours trying to do it.

I'm confused. You want to export each Playlist as a text file? Or you want to export each individual album in your iTunes library as a separate text file?
For the former - converting a Playlist into a text file - you could do the following. If there is a faster more streamlined way, I don't know it.
1. While viewing your playlist in iTunes, make sure only the columns you want in your text file are showing. (Remove columns by right-clicking on the header bar.)
2. Select all songs (Command-A) then right-click and select "Copy."
3. Open Notepad or, even better, Excel or some other spreadsheet software and Paste. The information is tab-delimited, so if you put it into a spreadsheet it automatically puts each item of information in its own column.
You could also just select all the songs in your library, sorted by album, then Copy and Paste into a spreadsheet. Then you could sort the spreadsheet according to album name or whatever and get rid of columns (song name, genre, etc) as you see fit. And, although I wouldn't necessarily recommend it, I'm sure there's some third-party software that will convert your playlists to text or spreadsheets or whatever. Hope this helps...

Export to CSV download link doesn't work

I have done the following:
If you click on the report link in your Region group
for the page concerned, then select the Report
Attributes tab and scroll down to Report Export you
can change the Enable CSV Output to YES and update
filename, separator etc.
This will show a link on the report page at runtime
that will allow the user to download the report in
CSV format to a spreadsheetAnd when I click on the link to download the report, it tries to download the page in html format...
any ideas on what the problem is?

Do you have spreadsheet software such as MS Excel or OpenOffice installed? What filename did you choose? Do you have your browser configured to launch a spreadsheet application when files of a certaim mime type are downloaded?

I have an EBPP application running on Jboss with SQL Server 2005.
Here are the details:
JDK 1.4
JBoss 3.2.5
SQL Server 2005
I would like to migrate it to Oracle 11g R2. I dont want to touch my application to make it compatible with Oracle. I would like to keep the SQL server drive and queries as it is. As far as i see, I have only one option.
One Go fo Oracle Transparent Gateway Way -
Migrate whole database of SQLserver 2005 to Oracle.
Shutdown the SQL server and install Oracle transparent gateway
Point the application to oracle transparent gateway.
Application will talk to oracle database via oracle transparent.
Upgrade application for oracle
Going with this, i have to upgrade so many things like JDK, JBoss and whole application.
Please advise, if you see a better approach to tacke this issue.

Incorrect. The Oracle Transparent Gateway is for the Oracle server to connect to the foreign server via a database link. This enables Oracle SQL and PL/SQL code to access a foreign database from the current Oracle database, by using a heterogeneous database link.
Sybrand raised a critical issue. Oracle != SQL-Server.
There are some fundamental and core differences between the two products. This means that a SQL-Server application will not be able to use Oracle optimally and scale accordingly - and that the application needs to be refactored.
What about this so-called +"the database is a black box+" approach that allows the database layer to supposedly be swap in and out for different database products - without having to touch the application?
A bunch of bull. For the black box approach to be used means developing the application to the very lowest common denominator that are supported by all RDBMS products. The lowest common denominator changes the RDBMS into a simplistic record-and-file architecture - using less than 5% of the actual capability of the RDBMS product. A total waste of technology and costs. One just as well could look at not using a RDBMS at all and simply roll the basic functionality in the app layer itself.
Your basic problem in my view is a conceptual one.
Applications are a dime a dozen. New code gets bashed out all the time. Applications are swapped in and out. Are upgraded. Are changed. There is a saying that if an application does not change, it is dead as it is no longer servicing business needs and growth and changes in the business and the market.
What remains fairly consistent and stable and constitutes the core, is the data. Simple example. What is important? The spreadsheet software or the spreadsheet data? Whether the spreadsheet s/w is Excel or Open Office or whatever - that is not what is important for the sales guy doing his sales projections. The actual spreadsheet and data are critical.
So it is about the data. Not about the application.
So your task is to make sure that the data layer is robust and consistent. Is performant and scalable. Is reliable. Is secure. And then put the application on top of that data layer.
It is not designing the application totally separate from the data layer and expect to simply swap one data layer for another and that the application will still fit and use that data layer correctly and optimally. (unless your an ISV doing a truly independent RDBMS s/w product, in which case you need to design and write a very large and very complex data access layer that can deal correctly with the specific data layer in use - and no, smelly stuff like Hibernate is not it)

What do I fill in for these parameters:
Identify Query - You do not code the query. Instead, you identify the following:
ID - The primary key column of the table that is then used as the foreign key reference.
Parent ID - The foreign key column of the table that references the primary key column, thus forming the hierarchy.
Leaf Node Text - Select the column to display. Although this is a singular selection, you can edit the resulting query after it is defaulted to concatenate in other columns.
Link Option - If the tree is for informational purposes only, a Link Option is not necessary. If the tree will be used for navigation, select Existing Application Item.

Your example begs the question - if it's too hard for you to navigate it, then it will DEFINITELY be too hard for your users.
Let's say I was looking for a Monitor on your site. I would have to search the entire top-level of the tree and come up with a list of several nodes which MAY contain what I'm looking for:
- LCD TV
- Monitors LCD
- Monitors CRT
- Plasma Displays
- Screens
- VGA
Instead, why not have a higher-level category called "Displays", then list each one of these sub-categories under it? Something like this:
+ Displays
+ CRT
    - VGA
+ LCD
    - Monitors
    - TVs
+ PlasmaI think that if you consolidate your tree, it will 1) solve your scrolling problem and 2) make your site more usable.
