Spring-loaded folders no longer work

Latest update to OS X Yosemite seems to have killed off the spring-loaded folders system. I notice also that the Finder preferences no longer shows the Spring-loaded folders option but that has now been replaced by an "Open folders in tabs instead of new windows" checkbox option. I did not see any reference to this in the readme otherwise I would not have updated. Is there a Terminal command to re-enable this please?

Space bar not longer works? I tried activating and deactivating Spring-loaded folders but when I press spacebar won't work (as whith older OSx)

  • Spring-loaded folders not working.

Spring-loaded folders (when you place the cursor on a folder, press the mouse button down, and the folder opens) isn't working on two of my Leopard installed machines (a PBG4 and a MBP).
I went into Finder Preferences to make sure it was activated, and it was and changed the setting to open faster, but that did not make a difference. The folders just are not responding.
Has anyone else seen this and have a fix? Or maybe I'm overlooking another setting?

    Spring loaded folders:
Finder > Preferences > General to set the delay
Space bar to open immediately. Used for putting items into folders.
Stacks are folders dragged to the dock by the trash can, set options by ctrl clicking (right click / two fingers on trackpad click) the folder. Options depend on where you keep the dock. Fan isn't an option when the dock is placed on the side of the screen.
    Best.

  • Spring Loaded Folders stopped working!

    Hi,
In my main user on my MacBook Pro Spring Loaded Folders stopped working in the Finder. If I switch to one of my other users on the same MBP it works fine. So my question is, which preference should I delete to restore this functionality?
I already tried com.apple.finder.plist and that had no effect after relaunching the Finder.

    Hi Terry,
Could it be that the preference got turned off? Go to Finder > Preferences > General, and down at the bottom, you should see a toggle switch for spring-loaded folders. If it's already on, try turning it off, relaunching Finder, and turning it on again (and then re-relaunching Finder!).
    Hope that helps!

  • Spring-loaded folders won't open

Is it just me or does any one else have the problem of Spring-loaded folders not opening when they are a alias of a folder on a server? A local alias seems to work fine when a file is held on top or the spacebar is hit to quicken the process. Both of the Macs I have upgraded to 10.6 have this problem and it worked fine in 10.4

I slowed the double click speed and resolved the problem.
Sorry for the waste of bandwith.

  • Can I adjust spring-loaded folders?

I can't find any way to change the behaviour of spring-loaded folders in Aperture. This is extremely annoying when organizing a library.
When I drag a project onto a folder it quickly opens that folder and when I drop the project it gets placed at the top, changing the arrange behaviour from "by name" to manual. I know I can simply right-click on the folder and change it back, but I really shouldn't have to do this. It's also very annoying that when I drop a project into a folder—no matter how quickly—the receiving folder will open. Why? This is a pain in the *** when dealing with folders which contain large amounts of projects because I have to close the folder to see the remaining folders under it.
Folder labels would be great too.
Apple—please give us some options for folder behaviour in Aperture!

Bernard -- when I drop Projects into a Folder, the "by name" sort order is retained. Don't know why you are seeing a different behavior.
I'm not a developer (hey), but I think the reason the Folders open is to retain the selection in the Viewer. When the Folder is closed, the Viewer selection is cancelled. It may have been decided that dropping selected Projects onto a Folder and not showing where those Projects went, as well as blanking the Viewer, would befuddle too many users.
I move my Folders as I process my photos. Personally, I like to see the confirmation of the move, even though I have hundreds of Projects in some Folders. I find the "{Option}+{click}" of the disclosure triangles useful -- it closes or opens all the sub-Folders. I often scroll to the top of the Library Inspector, "{Option}+{click}" to collapse the entire Library, then click to expand just the first child level (which I use for general organizing). I agree that this is more cumbersome than it should be.
+1 for Folder and Album labels/descriptions/tags/metadata. "Aperture→Provide Aperture Feedback".

  • Spring-loaded folders open BEHIND the main finder window.

When I try to drag and drop files using the spring-loaded folders feature, the 2nd tier of spring-loaded folders ALWAYS opens BEHIND the main window, making a drop (or further navigation) impossible. Anybody else experiencing this?
This is a brand new Macbook Air with Lion installed natively. Files & programs were migrated from a Time Machine backup using migration assistant.

Turning spring-loaded folders off and then back on in Finder preferences seems to have fixed this.

  • Quicklook colliding with Spring loaded folders

I am sure that most people know that dragging an item over a folder in Finder opens the folder after a short delay. A shortcut to open the folder is pressing space. Which incidentally is also the shortcut for entering Quick-look.
Sometimes these collide. It seems that Finder is suddenly catching focus on what is selected, and Quick-look opens when space is pressed, even as the spring-loaded folder opens. It is kind of annoying as Quick-look is the last thing you need when drilling through a file hierarchy.
    Anyone else have experienced this?

I'm having this same problem. In fact, lately the space bar shortcut for spring-loaded folders doesn't do anything at all. I just have to hold and wait til the set delay. Guess I'll have to lower the delay. Please fix this, Apple!

  • Spring-loaded folders not functioning

Option is checked in Finder preferences, delay short. When I move my mouse over a folder, nothing happens. What am I missing? Is it just broken on my machine?
    Thanks,
    Joe.

Spring-loaded folders only spring open when you drag something onto their icons, not when you mouse-over them.

  • Spring Loaded Folders not Closing

I have the spring loaded folders option checked, and they do open they way they should. However after say dragging and releasing a file into a folder that I accessed through several spring loaded folders, the spring loaded ones don't then automatically close. This is happening on 2 different machines running leopard.
So say I drag and drop a file into a folder that was 10 levels deep through springy folders. After the drop I now have 10 finder windows open. Is this happening to anyone else?

I've noticed the same thing. The windows all closed in Tiger. It seems like it acts differently. Sometimes I end up with all windows open, and other times I only end up with two windows open (the first and last springy ones used).
I've also noticed that if I drag a file to a folder in the sidebar it will flash the window like it's opening the spring loaded folder but you end up with the same window you started from. I have to drag the file away from that sidebar folder and then make another attempt at springing open the folder. This does not always happen though. I have tried messing with the slider in the Finder prefs for the time to spring open a folder but it doesn't help.

  • Firefox loads, but no longer works. You can't type in the address bar, use help or anything. What do I do?

I can get Firefox to open, but other than that nothing works. It doesn't respond to type or the mouse. In fact, it acts like your keyboard or mouse are no longer working. Which they are.
It was working fine & then it just stopped.
I've tried uninstalling & re-installing. That didn't help, nor did going back to an older version. I even tried using Windows restore point & going back in time. Nothing has helped.
    My OS is Vista.
    Can anyone help me? Thanks.

Do a clean reinstall and delete the Firefox program folder before (re)installing a fresh copy of the current Firefox release.
Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.
    *Firefox 21.0: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all.html
Uninstall your current Firefox version, if possible, to cleanup the Windows registry and settings in security software.
*Do NOT remove personal data when you uninstall your current Firefox version, because all profile folders will be removed and you lose personal data like bookmarks and passwords from profiles of other Firefox versions.
Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.
    *(32 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\"
    *(64 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\"
*It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.

Your bookmarks and other personal data are stored in the Firefox profile folder and won't be affected by an uninstall and (re)install, but make sure that "remove personal data" is NOT selected when you uninstall Firefox.
If you keep having problems then also create a new profile.

  • Spring Loaded Folders in Bookmark Bar

My apologies if this has already been asked (I couldn't find anything).
Is it possible or is there a plugin that will allow folders in the bookmark bar to act like spring loaded finder folders?
For example I have an Apple folder in my bookmarks bar which contains a number of sub-folders like hardware, software etc. If I drag and drop an address onto the Apple folder it just ends up in that folder, I would like to be able to hover over Apple and the subfolders become visible.
At the moment I have to Show All Bookmarks and organise from there. This seems like a really obvious thing to me, am I just missing a preference checkbox somewhere?
    Many thanks

Tom, I've never thought about that before. However, when you wish to bookmark a page, if you click on the Add Bookmark button i.e. the "+" sign/button next to the url/address window, you get a drop-down menu which shows the geometry of all the nested folders in your bookmark collection. It's just a simple case of scrolling down to the appropriate folder.
Apologies if you know that already and it's not of any use.

  • Windows 2008 R2 SP1 (64bit) shared folders no longer work with Windows 7 Pro but do work with WindowsXP & Windows 2003

As of last week, our Windows 7 Pro workstations can not map or browse the Windows 2008 Server shares. They can ping the Windows 2008 server. The Windows 7 Pro machines can still access the Windows 2003 Server Shares. The older workstations running Windows
XP can still map to the both the Windows 2003 & Windows 2008 Servers. All the servers can browse to each others shared folders (2 windows 2003 server & 1 windows 2008 server).

Ok, now you're down to network or permissions issues. An unedited ipconfig /all
of server and problem workstation may help. You could also try setting up some auditing.

  • Bookmark "spring loaded" folders

Is there a setting to keep bookmark folders from popping open so quickly when trying to move them around under "Show Bookmarks." Every time you try to drag something from top to bottom, it's almost impossible to actually get it to another folder because things keep immediately opening and closing. A 1 or 2 second delay would be fine.
Additionally, it doesn't seem possible to drag a folder and insert it in a new location. If you drag it from the bottom, all you seem to be able to do with it is drop it in another folder, not insert it between two existing folders.
And lastly, is there a way to sort things alphabetically?

Tom, I've never thought about that before. However, when you wish to bookmark a page, if you click on the Add Bookmark button i.e. the "+" sign/button next to the url/address window, you get a drop-down menu which shows the geometry of all the nested folders in your bookmark collection. • I just upgraded to the newest release, but now when I move/save a message, auto-completion to potential folders no longer works. What happened?

When I begin typing the letters for the destination folder, before it would show a list of the targets matching so far and I was able to click on one to select it. Now I just get a generic text entry box with no intermediate feedback. I do use the add-ons muttkeys and keyconfig, but I didn't think this would affect things.

I wonder if you had another add-on. I use [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/quick-folder-move/ Quick Folder Move] which does something similar to what you describe.

  • Spring-loaded folder

    27" retina display (late 2014), OS X 10.10.3
Problem is to activate Spring-Loaded Folders. Opening Finder>Preferences>General does not show on the bottom slider for adjustment of it. So I believe something else is missing. Would someone be so kind to point to the solution.

Enable it in Accessibility pane of System Preferences.
System Preferences > Accessibility > Mouse & Trackpad
Checkmark the box beside "Spring-Loading delay:".
