SpringLayout in J2SE6.0 : Can't make sense of Sun's statement
Sun advertises binary incompatibilities for pre-1.6 programs when run in a 1.6 JRE. I have an app that is now completely broken with 1.6, and I can't make sense of Sun's explanation (quoted below in its entirety).
First of all, the two sentences in the statement
"In Java SE 6, SpringLayout maintains the order in which springs have been set. As a result, specifying springs is no longer order-dependent."
seem to directly contradict each other. But more to the point, I don't understand their description of what constitutes an overly constrained layout. They say in one place that two springs on an axis are necessary and a third would result in some redundancy. But then they say that the first of the following two statements was ignored in j2SE5.0
constraints.setX(xSpring);
constraints.setConstraint("East", eastSpring);Why is that? If you only constrain the east side of an object, why is the placement on the X axis redundant? I would think that either an X or a width constraint is needed. My code is predicated on that (apparently erroneous) understanding, and now I get over 60 "spring xyz is cyclic" errors using J2SE6.0.
I think if I understood the example above I'd know what's wrong with my code, but I just can't see how you can constrain an object fully with a single spring.
Here's the full text of Sun's incompatibility statement from the release notes.
[i]8. Specifying constraints on SpringLayout was order dependent
SpringLayout specifies three Springs along each axis which dictate the size and position of a component. Only two Springs are needed along each axis, with the third being derived. If three Springs are specified, the layout is considered overly constrained and one of the Springs is dropped. Currently, the behavior for determining which Spring to drop is not intuitive and leads to ordering problems.
In Java SE 6, SpringLayout maintains the order in which springs have been set. As a result, specifying springs is no longer order-dependent. Support for centering and aligning along the baseline has also been added.
Programs affected by this change can contain statements that were redundant in J2SE 5.0.
For example:
constraints.setX(xSpring);
constraints.setConstraint("East", eastSpring);
In J2SE 5.0, the setX call in effect resulted in nothing, in Java SE 6, the setX call is meaningful and different behavior will result.

i thought i'd mention a little more. if i change my constructor to something like
public MyClass() {
System.out.println("Before load().");
load();
System.out.println("After load().");
}the before and after lines print but the load method's printf will not print until my program ends. still puzzled.

Can anyone make sense of my speed test results ple...
Hiya,
I signed up to Bt broadband around a month ago and we have been so disappointed in the poor speeds we receive.
We previously had tiscalli and wish we never changed.
I have run the bt speedtest and also a speednet test.
Can anyone make sense of them?
The internet is sometimes useful but other times is ridiculously slow.

Help would be greatly appreciated.yes we did just reset the hub,to check our settings it asked for password but wouldnt accept the one BT gave us so said we had to reset.
is there anyhting we can do to improve noise margin-could this be the cause?

All data in the about:healthreport Firefox Health Report page is accurate except for the persistently inaccurate bookmarks count in the Vital Stats section of the page, which counts only 14 bookmarks and fails to count the other 7903 bookmarks.
The about:healthreport Firefox Health Report Vital Stats section shows bookmarks 14.
The about:healthreport Firefox Health Report Raw Data page shows bookmarks 7917.
The Firefox/Bookmarks/Show All Bookmarks/Library window shows 7910 items.
How can I make the about:healthreport Firefox Health Report Vital Stats section correctly and accurately show "bookmarks 7917" instead of incorrectly and erroneously showing "bookmarks 14"?
Platform: FF 36.0.4, Mac OS X 10.8.5
Platform: FF 31.5.2 ESR, Mac OS X 10.8.5
The following steps reveal the issue:
(1) In the Firefox Navigation Bar, type "about:healthreport" (without the quotation marks) to open the Firefox Health Report page.
(2) On the left side of the Firefox Health Report page, in the Vital Stats section, the following data appears: bookmarks 14. This is false data because the browser actually has 7917 bookmarks, not 14 bookmarks. All other data in the Firefox Health Report page is accurate.
(3) In the Firefox Health Report page, click the Raw Data link to reveal all Raw Data.
(4) Page Down approximately 10 pages to the following specific Raw Data:
"2015-03-22": {
"org.mozilla.addons.counts": {
"_v": 2,
"extension": 28,
"plugin": 6,
"theme": 1
"org.mozilla.healthreport.submissions": {

"uploadSuccess": 1,
"uploadTransportFailure": 1
"org.mozilla.places.places": {
"_v": 1,
"bookmarks": 7917,
"pages": 4293
5) The preceding Raw Data correctly indicates the following data: "bookmarks": 7917,
6) Open the Firefox/Bookmarks/Show All Bookmarks/Library window.
7) In the Library window sidebar, select the entry "All Bookmarks".
8) In the Library window Search Bookmarks search bar, type the colon punctuation mark " : " (without the quotation marks) to reveal the entire list of all items (bookmarks) in the Library window.
9) In the Library window, select any one of the items (bookmarks) in the list of items.
10) Press the <command> <A> keys to select and highlight automatically all items in the items (bookmarks) list, and Firefox automatically will begin the process of counting all items (bookmarks) in the items list.
11) After a counting interval of several seconds, the count of the total number of items (bookmarks) that are present in the items list appears near the bottom-center of the Library window: 7910 items.
12) I installed the "Places Maintenance" add-on, selected the "All" preference, and executed the add-on, but it did not correct the issue.
13) The about:healthreport Firefox Health Report Vital Stats section counts only 14 bookmarks and fails to count the remaining 7903 bookmarks.
Note --
On the support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions site, after selecting ASK A QUESTION and writing this question, I attempted to upload image files with the question, but I am unable to upload a JPG (97 KB) image file or a PNG (307 KB) image file because the "Add Images Browse" function appears to be broken.
Each time I click the "Add images: Browse" button, select one of the image files, and click "Open" to upload the image file, a spinning gear appears in a square beneath "Uploaded images:", and the spinning gear continues to spin without stopping. The image file does not upload.
While the gear is spinning, the message "Uploading <filename>.jpg" or "Uploading <filename>.png" remains constantly visible beneath the square that contains the spinning gear.
I think the gear would have continued to spin for eternity if I had not reloaded the page after the gear had been spinning for a full 7 minutes.
The image files would not upload.It could be the work of one of your add-ons.

Can anyone make sense of these log files?
Hey Guys,
I'm getting ~100MB log files every day in private/var/log/DiagnosticMessages. Mostly it seems to be something resembling the following over and over and over again:
{And here is where the log file gets eaten every time I try to post it - mostly messages from com.apple.message.signature, com.apple.message.domain0, my-Computer-4mDNSResponder, com.apple.message.uuid, and com.apple.mDNSResponder.autotunnel.domainstatus}
Can anyone help based on the above? Is there any way to post log code with lots of weird binary characters without it getting eaten? Or maybe a screenshot of the log code?
These logs do not appear when I am out of town, which makes me think that it's one of my Airport Extremes, but I've done factory restores on both of them and the logs are still being generated. I've also had to reinstall my OS due to an unrelated issue and the logs are still being generated.
Any ideas of what might be generating these giant logs would be really helpful. Thanks!
Message was edited by: loudguitars81I see seven logs in private/var/log, which IS normal. There isn't anything repeating in those beyond the aforementioned Epson thing, which was not what was causing the logs to be generated in private/var/log/DiagnosticMessages. The Epson errors in system.log and its daily predecessors stopped when I got rid of a bunch of Epson cruft, but the giant log files in the DiagnosticMessages logs continue.
The private/var/log/DiagnosticMessages logs don't seem to be clearing out - I had them going all the way back to when I first installed Snow Leopard before I reinstalled the OS recently (the reinstall wiped out the old logs, obviously). This was actually how I discovered this weird logging problem in the first place - I couldn't figure out what was taking up so much space on my drive and I ran DiskUtilityX to find I had 10 gigs of log files in the DiagnosticMessages folder dating back from my move on 7/3.
Everything before my move was well under 1MB daily. Everything after my move (and when my computer wasn't staying somewhere besides my own house) was between 75-100MB daily.
Even after I reinstalled my OS 2/16, the private/var/log/DiagnosticMessages logs are not clearing out - until I ran @LincDavis's terminal commands, I had logs going back to that date, which was obviously more than 7 days ago.
Does any of that detail help you guys in trying to pinpoint what's happening here? -
Can anyone make sense of this Kernel panic log I got?
My computer has been acting up a lot as of late so I took it to the Apple Store (A local one, not a retail store) and the guy said the turnaround time was about 5 days, not including weekends. I decided to keep it over the weekend and reinstall OSX, run Apple Hardware Test, and play around with it a bit more. I got this kernel panic while watching the MLG Dallas livestream, but I've had these problems while doing anything, from watching livestreams and YouTube videos to browsing and chatting on facebook, and even while simply booting up the computer. I've run AHT (extended) which turned back nothing, reinstalled OSX, reset PRAM, and everything else I can think of. To give you a better idea of the problem, here's the thread I posted about it earlier
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2802562&tstart=0
Sometimes it gives me kernel panics, sometimes it just shuts down and gives me a randomly colored screen to look at. Either way, it's really annoying.

Apples to apples - how can I make sense of DNGPE's color readouts?
The simple version of this question is "how do I convert a DNG file such that Photoshop's HSV (and CIELAB) readouts agree with DNGPE's?" Put another way, I want to have the same DNG image open in Photoshop and DNGPE, and have both applications agree on the color numbers for a particular chart patch.
It seems like using ACR to convert an image into ProPhotoRGB would get me close, at least in the hue and sat dimensions, but that isn't the case in practice.
Worse yet, the L*a*b* numbers disagree, and as far as I understand, they shouldn't. The closest I've been able to get is using dcraw on the command line to spit out linear 16-bit TIFFs in ProPhotoRGB, but it's still not exact, and it strikes me as weird that I'd get closer with an open-source tool than Camera Raw.
I'd like to just derive my list of HSV vectors from Photoshop and plug that list into a DNGPE recipe (rather than hand-tweaking color patches using the DNGPE GUI), but if I can't get Photoshop and DNGPE to agree on the source color, this becomes impossible, as I'd be comparing apples to oranges.
Also, it's my understanding that the DNG Profile HueSatMaps are based on HSV, but DNGPE seems to specify its list of corrections as HSL... is that correct? Any particular reason that the corrections are a list of HSL vectors that are later translated into HSV for the profile?
Thanks in advance!Following up to myself here - I was able to get Camera Raw to convert an image such that the L*a*b* numbers matched DNGPE, but Hue and Sat are still off. What I WAS doing previously, to no avail, was converting in Camera Raw using the same BASE profile I had selected in DNGPE. I thought that since I hadn't made any corrections or changes in DNGPE, it would only be applying the base profile, and the images should match.
To fix that, I used DNGPE to export a new profile (again, with no actual edits made), and converted using the exported profile. Now Photoshop and DNGPE agree about the L*a*b* figures at least, though they still disagree about hue / sat. DNGPE consistently reports hue numbers about 6º-10º higher than Photoshop, and saturation numbers that are 50-100% higher. Saturation difference, I suspect, are from comparing HSB in Photoshop to HSL in DNGPE. Not sure what would be causing the hue inaccuracy. The RGB numbers differ wildly, too, so this is probably a color management issue.
Duplicating DNGPE's color management to obtain identical Hue and Sat figures in another application is now the problem. Put as simply as possible - "Where does DNGPE get it's hue / sat figures?"

Very weird event-can anyone make sense of this?
Can anyone explain this:
Last night while on Firefox (3.5) was editing a post (not here) when, all of a sudden, the text cursor reversed direction uncontrollably and, character by character, deleted (swallowed up) everything I had written. Clicking didn't stop it.
Don't know if this started exactly at this moment, but heard a continuous series of error beeps which persisted even after FF was closed, with the mouse pointer now flickering constantly. Re-opened FF (page was now dimmed, but came back to life when I clicked on it). No change with flickering mouse pointer and constant error beeps.
Then went into DU and verified disc and permissions. Everything OK there--SMART status verified, no funny sounds from the drive--and nothing at all written to Console or the Firefox crash log. I think the OS was still responding throughout this event, despite the constant error beeps and the flickering mouse pointer. Was able to access DU during this. Nothing crashed. I think only FF, Mail app, maybe Console (which I keep in the dock), and TextEdit were open at the time.
Re-booted and everything seemed back to normal. Then ran Applejack (lower case) through its paces, including caches and preferences in user account. So far, after re-booting again this morning, everything seems normal. Don't think this was a Firefox issue, since the flickering mouse pointer and error beeps persisted even after quitting FF.

Help! Can anyone make sense of these system errors?
My MacBook Pro has been crashing a lot. I've done four erase and installs. It's fairly stable now (i.e. I am crashing a few times a day, if that, as opposed to every time I boot up). Any thoughts on these errors that are showing up in my system log...and how do I fix them? (Or do I have one of those infamous busted logic boards?) I've installed 2 gigs of 3rd part RAM that checks out as OK when I run the hardware test off the install disks.
Thanks in advance.

MacBook Pro Mac OS X (10.4.7)Thanks for the reply. I'll deal with the RAM first, as I shudder to think about sending my laptop in for a CPU change. Do the rest of the errors seem RAM related?
Funny story...I actually got this MacBook Pro for free from Apple because they tried twice to fix the hard drive on my Powerbook and couldn't get it right. You can imagine how thrilled I am to be having problems again. I've only had this machine for a month... -
Can anyone make sense of this crash report?

com.apple.kec.pthread 1It doesn't particularly look like a RAM problem; were the crashes prior to upgrading the RAM similar?
Where did you purchase the RAM?
The panic log doesn't indicate it was cause by any third-party software, so it is likely hardware. RAM is often the most likely hardware problem, but as I mentioned, I'm not sure that panic looks like a RAM problem.

Can anyone make sense of this iChat report? Video problems.
Hi,
Can anyone figure out why it is I cannot connect with anyone using iChat Video? The Text option works like a charm. I have recently moved, same internet provider, etc, upgraded to Leopard as well. Tiger and iChat worked fine.
Solutions?
Cheers, SZ

Can anyone make sense of this?
According to info ...
My Mac HD is showing usage of 42.52 GB
Activity Monitor shows disc usage of 42.25 GB
My portable WD HD (for backups) (topped up today)
shows total usage of 49.48 GB
My LaCie external HD is used for Time Machine and
shows used as 88.58 GB
Would anyone know why there is no consistency here?
Big Thanks for advice.I see no great inconsistency. You are referring to three different disks.
On your internal disk, the two programs are probably counting things slightly differently. One may, for example, be including temporary swap space in use by the system, the other not.
Unless the WD disk is a clone of the internal, I wouldn't expect them to be identical sizes, and even then not necesarily, as file allocation units could be different.
Time Machine uses much more space than the disk it is backing up. I don't know how far back it goes, but it is possible to restore to yesterday's state, or last week's, or July 1st's ... so there may be several versions of some files. -

Can't make buttons hidden in normal state.
I've been reading the boards about how to make buttons hidden in the normal state and that all you have to do is turn the opacity down to 0, but that doesn't seem to be working for me. The buttons (such as the triangle or solid line built in to DVDSP) just turn grey.
Is there something I am missing?
Please advise.button properties
colors tab/set normal to 0.
The manual also goes into great detail regarding this. -
When a C/Pro*C program makes a core file after core dumped, what is the significance of this file. How can I make sense of the reason the core dump occurred. That is, understand the error because of which the core dump occurred.
Regards
Krishnantype "adb core" and adb will give you some output
indicating which program died and with which kind
of error (e.g. Segmentation violation, illegal instruction
etc.) .
Leave adb by Ctrl-D and restart with adb <programname>
Now, Type "$c" at the adb prompt in order to get a
stack trace, or other commands displaying addresses,
register contents etc.
