Spry Dataset and XML problem

I think this problem is a result of my lack of knowledge regarding XML but hope someone can help set me straight. I am using Spry datasets in several web pages all accessing HTML pages with data in tables format. These work great.
I would like to use XML files for some other data on another site I am working on and while the Spry Dataset wizard allows me to call the XML file the information I get in the Row Element panel and the Data Preview panel appear to have nothing to do with the XML file I am accessing. I am expecting a list of US states and instead get a heading called Types with Default and Override as the two indented lines beneath type.
I have tried several other xml files that I have created or downloaded as samples from the web and always get the same headings.
I am trying to insert into a plain vanilla HTML page.
What am I doing wrong? I have attached the XML file I am using

You cannot do cross domain requests with Ajax, you will need to use a server side transporter / proxy to get the file for you.

Has anyone ever run into a problem with Spry Tables and Xml
Data Sets viewed in IE7? Work fine in IE6 and Firefox, but get the
error "exception caught while loading feed.xml: [object Error]" in

I came looking for the answer to this question. I could not
find an answer. Eventually I found it the answer that worked for
me, a graphic designer with not much experience in xml.
The following url provided an errata file in PDF format:

which includes the following addendum to the incomplete
instructions in the book i was using to learn about spry:
"If Internet Explorer 7 is your primary browser, you'll nee
to take some extra steps to view spry dynamic content locally.
First, your site must be within the local server webroot; be sure
your Lessons folder is stored within the Inetpub>wwwroot folder.
Next, double-click the site name in the files panel to open the
Site Definition dialogue. Click the Testing Server category; from
the Access List choose Local/Network. Click Okay to close the Site
Definition dialogue. Now, when you preview your page with Internet
Explorer, your local Web server (localhost) serves the page as
designed."
Horray for me! Now i can move on from here and actually get
some work done!

Spry dataset and Calendar widget not working

I have created a Spry data set table on a separate HTML
I have used the wizard to put that data set on my page
I have attempted to bind the date section of my data set with the YUI Calendar but am failing miserably.
Can anyone help me fix this problem?
I have tried to follow tutorials on line and they leave out the "detailed" part about what code to rewrite and how to make it actually work.

I dont have the calendar progress uploaded on the site because it looks so bad...
would it be helpful if I did?

Spry Alignment and Positioning Problem in Internet Explorer 6 and 7

I am designing a website at http://atoment.007gb.com, and neither me, nor my partner can figure out why the Spry Horizontal Menu Bar is loading the way it is in Internet Explorer. We are doing this for a school project, and eye appeal and workability is a top priority. I changed and customized most of it, but even if i did keep it the same, it still wouldn't work. I have only the best confidence, that even given the amount i have changed, you will still be able to help me with my alignment problem.
The Submenu Buttons Tile across the page, when they are supposed to go straight down...
the Submenu overlaps the main menu when you hover over it
and the darned thing wont center in any of my browsers, but thats the least of my worries.

The original SpryMenuBarHorizontal.css does not have any issues in any of the browsers. If you go and modify the original, and it does not work anymore, then the logical conclusion is that you have made one or (more likely) multiple mistakes.
In other words, you cannot make it work with what you already have.
My advice is that you replace the original CSS and work from there; but instead of changing the original CSS, make your changes in a separate stylesheet so that you can monitor and test the code at each change. For instance if you want to change the colour of the text you make a style rule that overrides the original in your new stylesheet as follows:

Projector and xml problem

This is the problem :
I've got 2 projectors.
1- start.exe // Gives the user language choice.
2- main.exe // main movie in the language choose by user.
I've got xml image gallery in the main.exe , if i use
start.exe to open main.exe the xml doesn't show up at all.
But if i start main.exe directly, well what do you know, it
appears without any problem.
I really don't why it doesn't work. Any idea ?

Pretty much has to be that you are referencing _root in your
main file. When
you load main into start, the _root is now start, not main.
Solution: Don't
use _root... Set a var and use that.
In main:
var me:MovieClip = this;
And use that everywhere you used _root.

Spry Dataset and Nested Data

i've 1 xml file, with basicly 3 columns: city, artist, artist
description.
i want to show cities and when a city clicked, show the
artists in that city, and when artist is clicked show artist
description as details.
i've tryed everything, but the best i can do... see below.
any help would be highly appreciated!!!

city(buitenplaats), than the middel column shows the
artists(kunstenaar) and when clicked on artist,

Spry flyout and IE problems

I set up a site with a spry vertical menu with flyout
submenus. It works fine in IE7, safari, and firefox. However, one
of the clients for whom I did the site cannot display the menu
correctly. The submenus "flyout", but half or more of the choices
aren't visible. And, of course, all of the "formatting" doesn't
show up either, but that part is ok...it's just borders and stuff.
Anyone have any ideas what to do? I believe the problems are with
IE 6, but this menu is supposed to work for that, right? It has the
code included for the hacks. The URL is:

Parsing dataset and spry variable

Some curiosity of mine, can we parse spry dataset and
variable to another function? something like parsing a dataset so
we can save a lot code, example:

Slimbox not working with Spry Dataset

Hi there,
I'm trying to populate a page with Spry Dataset and use Slimbox2 to show a set of 4 images when a thumbnail is clicked.
The original webpage WITHOUT Spry Dataset is here:

Currently it works with just slimbox, but as soon as I add a Spry Dataset, the large images won't load anymore. When a thumbnail is clicked on, it opens the 1st large image of the set in a new page, completely removing the lightbox effect.
I've scouted the internet for solutions; it's been suggested that slimbox doesn't work because spry doesn't have time to load the content first. But I'm not savvy with javascript at all, so have no idea how to work around it....
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You are not re-initializing the lightbox library code after Spry have generated the markup.
You can use the Spry region observer onPostUpdate to get notified of region re-generation and recall the initialization code of the lightbox.

Using Multiple Spry datasets? - regarding Regions: DetailContainer/DetailRegion

Hi Spry experts:
I've been battling a good battle: Spry datasets and mobile app development. I'm making headway, but as is true in life, there are problems. I've professor googled for several days related to the current issue without success. I'm throwing in the towel and asking for help.
I have a jquery mobile project I am developing in dreamweaver cs 5.5. I created a Spry HTML dataset to populate 3 lists on separate pages. Each list page is populated by a single html file that contains 3 tables with different ids.
Each table has 3 rows (name, image, desc). Each list is populated using the "name" field from each table. The lists part is all working just fine.
However, when a list item is selected (clicked), it is supposed to take the user to another page (details). There are three details pages--one for each list. These pages are for the item details. Each details page uses the same basic code. Only one page works. If I switch the location of the detail pages in DW, the page that is closest to the list pages is the one that works. I know that I am doing something that is pretty plain to someone who knows Spry, but I'm lost as to what to do next. I've tried multiple fixes and read many Spry documents. A HUGE thanks in advance to anyone who knows the answer. If you need more information, please let me know.
The expected behavior is that whatever list item is clicked the item should jump to the details page and load the data.

Advanced data selection in Spry datasets

There seems to have a bug in the final release of DW CS4 that
wasn't there in the Beta version: when we create an html Spry
dataset and we check the "Advanced data selection" option, DW
automatically adds a row with column0, column1, and so on. This row
doesn't do anything good, and if we click next, checking or
unchecking the "Use first row as header" option doesn't change
anything...
In fact, if we don't check the "Advanced data selection" in
the first step, checking or unchecking the "Use first row as
header" on the second step toggles the column0... behavior... So,
it's like if there was a bug that if we use advanced, it always
acts as if the "Use first row as header" was always unchecked...
adding an unessesary row to our data...
For now, the only way I could go around that, was to not use
the "Advanced data selection", and in the last step, clicking Set
Up... and removing the columns that I don't want...

What advantages do Spry datasets have over database datasets

I have been studying the Spry Dataset and have found it terribly difficult to understand what use it is.
Can anyone explain why I should use it rather than using a database?
On the face of it, Databases are much easier to construct and access, so why use an alternative system.
From what I understand, I have to create a basic database table on an HTML page before I can attampt to create a spry dataset.
Or even use the dataset of a database to create a Spry dataset. I appreciate that there are other methods.
There are lots of articles telling one how to use it, but none stating what it is for and why one should use it - at least, none that I can find.
Where are the advantages of this system, or are you all using it just for technologies sake?
Or is it just an Adobe thing?

Where are the advantages of this system, or are you all using it just for technologies sake?
Or is it just an Adobe thing?

There are big difference between Datasets and databases. While I disagree with your point that Databases are easier to construct instead of Datasets. I understand your point. You should not see Datasets and databases as rivals of each others but more of a extension of each other. You use a database to store all your data and contents. When you execute a query on your database your will get a result set, or dataset. This usually the place when Spry could come in. You have data output from your database, now you just place it static on your page. Nothing wrong with that. But if you wish to create a interactive page it will usually require you to build allot of round trips to your server to present your data in different ways.
With Spry these round trips can be handled on the client side. Once your users have received your data for the Spry Data Set there are allot things they can do with it, and usually faster than doing round trips to the server. For example your can sort and filter data sets, display information in a master and detail layout or even create different page states using the same data with out having to reload the page. This will create a more seamless experience for the user.
For example our company is currently developing a search result page based on Spry Datasets. On the server side we have our database clusters that out the data for a search query. But this is usually 200+ result rows. In a traditional static website it would take a while for the user to digg through all results. Either by navigating to a next page, or filtering the dataset using forms.
With Spry we now have our result set outputted as JSON (one of the formats Spry supports as data source for the Spry Data Set) we download it all to the client. And that is all they need. All sorting, filtering and pagination is done client side. So no more round trips to the server ( less server stress, and its faster ).
I could go on about for hours but I hope this will give a general point of usages. If not take a look at the Spry demos. Which use Spry Data to create rich and interactive pages, and just imagine how you would have done that using traditional techniques and how long it would take you to build that.

Dw cs5.5 + Phonegap + spry dataset xml and images links broken

Hi all,
I'm building an app using DW CS5.5 and Phonegap.
This is what I've done:
created pages using the starter template (local)
I created a php page that run a query on a mysql database and output an xml file
I created a spry dataset using the php (see 2) file as data file
It works locally and on-line on my website.
But if I package an app using the android sdk from dw CS5.5 I have problems: all images are all broken. It seems that the link to image is not correct.
In fact, all images are not using absolute path (http://www.mysite.com/images/...) but are set this way: /images/....
So, my question is: have I to specify all images sources using absolute paths to make it work when packaged?

I just solved the problem with image paths (I made all src paths absolute).

It should work on desktop browsers but it fails when I pack the app for android and install it on an android smartphone: I get "error loading page" when clicking on any details link (the button label is: DETTAGLI) on the news page.

Spry Dataset XML Import Blank (Where's the problem?)

I have a weird predicament I've worked myself into and need to figure out a way to clean up this process.
Background: I am working within the constraints of a content management system that doesn't have full content management capabilities, switching CMS is not an option, server I believe is Tomcat, but JSP/ASP/PHP I think is irrelevant because of the constraints of the CMS. The current dilemma I have is that they want a list built on a page, 40 items per page. Very manual process. Get Excel list --> Move to HTML --> And then playing musical chairs rotating things around. This last part is the reason I'd like to move it towards XML. It might not be as pretty, but I'm hoping to eliminate as much tedious coding as I possibly can (code looks bad enough as it is, no where near valid, definitely not accessible for Murray, but out of my control as far as changing at the moment).
The project also moves around so not everyone has the same software and moving to a database, is not an option.
Where I'm at: Because there are multiple parties involved the only link between them is the dreaded Micrsoft Office (v. 2007). So I figured it was worth a shot looking into Excel's XML capabilities. I created the XSD file for Excel to map from, and let Excel save the file as XML. Now I have used the XML feature before in DW with datasets using XML files that either I hand-coded or where cached from database queries. I tried to import it into DW and normally where you preview the data, in this case, nothing is visible. So my first though is, maybe the XML from Excel doesn't validate, but then it does so that doesn't appear to be the issue. It validates just fine.
My ideal is that users can save just an Excel file and when these pages are made, the XML can be exported for DW and then if things need to be re-ordered they can easily do it in Excel which everyone has, but the web person can just upload an XML. Below is the XML and XSD files that were used. There is only one row of data in the XML file and data is sample data because of proprietary things. Any help with this problem is greatly appreciated.
