Spry menu bar vertical problem in IE

Hi,
I try to use the spry menu in my website, but results are so different between FF and IE.
It works perfectly on FF and a real mess on IE8, as you can see here :
http://www.lesdecales.com/indexJP.htm
On IE, my vertical menu placed basically on the left, is replaced by a white emplty space...and the menu is on the bottom right of the page.
You can have a look to my css file here :
http://www.lesdecales.com/SpryAssets/SpryMenuBarVertical.css
is there a way to display it properly on IE ?
thanks for your help and your time

Add/modify the following
ul.MenuBarVertical{width: 8em;}
@media screen, projection{
    ul.MenuBarVertical li.MenuBarItemIE{background:transparent;}

  • Spry Menu Bar Positioning Problem in IE

    I have a Dreamweaver-created Spry Menu Bar drop down menu which works perfectly in every browser on my Mac and on my PC . . . EXCEPT Internet Explorer (who woulda thunk it?!!)
    In all browsers except for IE, the 3 submenu items under "Door Systems" and "Gallery" appear exactly as they should in a vertical row, positioned just below the brown line below the navigation links and all the same width. But in IE they appear higher up and with different widths. IE is ignoring the rules for width and position.
      <ul id="MenuBar2" class="MenuBarHorizontal">
        <li><a class="MenuBarItemSubmenu" href="closet_doors_gallery.html">DOOR SYSTEMS</a>
          <ul>
            <li><a href="sliding_doors_nyc_nj.html">DOOR PROFILES</a></li>
            <li><a href="bifold_doors_nyc_nj.html">PANELS COLORS</a></li>
            <li><a href="room_dividers_nyc_nj.html">DOOR SYSTEM TYPES</a></li>
          </ul>
        </li>
      </ul>
    <ul id="MenuBar3" class="MenuBarHorizontal">
        <li><a class="MenuBarItemSubmenu" href="#">GALLERY </a>
          <ul>
            <li><a href="#">SLIDING DOORS</a></li>
            <li><a href="#">BI-FOLD DOORS</a></li>
            <li><a href="#">ROOM DIVIDERS</a></li>
          </ul>
        </li>
      </ul>
    Here is the page where you can see the problem if you view it with IE, and see that it's  fine in Safari, and Firefox,    Chrome and Opera, Mac or PC:

    Perry

    Hi and thank you very much. It was a little confusing as to whether you meant to add the rules you suggested or to replace them, or a combination of both, but I puzzled it out. I created a new MenuBarHorizontal.css file in a blank page and then made the changes you suggested and it works! Yay! I had to do a bit of tweaking to get it to look just the way I wanted, but it now works correctly in ie 7 and 8 and still works fine in everything else.
    Interestingly enough, I had to change the margin-top: 63px; rule in "ul.MenuBarHorizontal ul.MenuBarSubmenuVisible" to 40px to get it positioned properly vertically, and I had to get rid of the "border-bottom: solid 1px #EEE;" in "ul.MenuBarHorizontal ul li", which caused the submenu items to have quite a lot of vertical space between them - I'm not sure why!
    I also had to get rid of all the syling rules in the "SUBMENU INDICATION: styles if there is a submenu under a given menu item" section, as well as the one you added: "ul.MenuBarHorizontal a.MenuBarItemSubmenu {
        padding: 0.5em 2em 0.5em 0.75em;"
    With that done, it works great in both ie7 and ie8, so thank you for the help. Below is the new css that works, in total.
    Not being as familiar with the subtleties of CSS as you and many others obviously are, I'm REALLY curious as to exactly what is different that causes this to work now, and would be happy to hear your expanation, if you feel like taking the time to explain. If not, no problem - it works and that is the most important thing! So, thank you again -

  • Spry Menu Bar transparency problem - one solution

    Like many other people I have spent several frustrating days trying to solve the problem of Spry Menu Bar sub-menus appearing to be transparent (text, etc. underneath the sub-menus shows above/through the sub-menu items). This problem manifested itself in IE7, but not in Netscape, Safari or Firefox.
    I thought it must be the dreaded IE z-index problem.
    I have been through most other people's questions and replies on the Adobe forums, tried all kinds of z-index changes and various other mods to my own CSS and/or the Spry CSS's - all to no avail.
    My situation:
    I have a Spry Menu Bar above a clicktrail and a text block. Both the clicktrail and the text block showed through the sub-menu items, which drop-down over them.
    All three items are located in relative-positioned divs, necessary because the whole page design is contained in a self-centralizing container div and absolute-positioned divs screw up the whole page layout when the screen size or browser window size changes.
    (Sorry, I can't upload the files to a website at the moment.)
    The solution that works for me in Dreamweaver CS4:
    I selected the divs for the clicktrail and the text block, one at a time, and selected Modify > Arrange > Send to Back in Dreamweaver CS4.
    I then selected these two items again and selected Modify > Arrange > Bring to Front.
    Finally I selected the div containing the Spry Menu Bar and selected Modify > Arrange > Bring to Front. The thought behind this was that this would put the Spry Menu Bar on top of everything else - and it works!
    This solution works in all four browsers, but don't ask me how! I can't see any change in any CSS, nor in my template code. All I can see is a strange, flashing vertical line (like an enormous cursor - about 10 cm [3"] high) in the middle of the template page only (and only in Dreamweaver) if I click on the page background. I can neither find an explanation for this nor anything in the coding which might cause it. By the way; the z-index for the menu div =2, the z-index for the clicktrail div is not defined and the z-index for the div for the text block is set to auto. I haven't tried other values and to be honest I'm not sure what they were set to before I applied the above 'solution'.
    But hey - who the hell cares - my site works!
    I hope this helps someone else out of an absolute hell-hole...if someone out there can explain where to find the code that had been changed or added by doing this I'd like to know. I don't like things I can't explain - even if they do work!

    This is where the browser is told to supply a white background
    ul.MenuBarHorizontal a
         display: block;
         cursor: pointer;
         background-color: #fff;
         padding: 0.5em 0.75em;
         color: #333;
         text-decoration: none;
    Vhange the value to transparent.
    Also the last line int the CSS should be removed as in
    filter: "alpha(opacity=60)";

  • Spry Menu Bar Vertical Help

    Hi,
    Since the site isn’t online yet I posted my project for downloading.  I am using Dreamweaver CS4.
    For the website I am creating I would like to have a spry menu bar.  I have been trying to figure this out but I can’t do it.  The main file I am working with is named “theme_02_design.html” which is found in the Publish folder inside of In Play by Heather Ashley Inc. As you can see there is a left navigation area with 3 items listed (Home, Products, and Contact Us).  I would like to change this into a vertical spry menu bar.  Every time I try to do this the page is distorted in some way or another.  I would like the menu on the left of the screen to look the same but with the vertical spry menu bar functions.
    When someone visits the page I would like them to hover over the word products and have a submenu with multiple items.
    It would look something like this...
    Home
    Products  - submenu -  Warm Up Series (I would insert a submenu here as well)
    Contact Us                   Lace Up Hooded Sweatshirt
                                        Fleece Name Pants
                                        Shorts
                                        Accessories
                                        Shell Colors
                                        Trim Colors (I would insert a submenu here as well)
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks

    I fiddled around with your file. I will attach the zip of your files.
    Take a look at your page. I commented out your original navigation and added a Vertical Spry Menu Bar.
    You will have to do some more adjusting, but I copied portions of your own CSS file into the Spry Menu Bar CSS.
    See what you can do with it.

  • Spry menu bar - vertical format instead of horizontal

    When I inserted the Spry Menu Bar I selected a Horizontal format (instead of Vertical). However, the menu bar appears vertically in the document. I have inserted it on top of the banner (which was inserted as a background image within a table) and is definitely wide enough to accommodate a horizontal menu bar. I have deleted it and tried a couple of times but still the horizontal selection appears in a vertical format. Any ideas much appreciated.
    This is how it appears in code:
    <table width="970" border="0">
              <tr>
                <td height="160" class="banner"><ul id="MenuBar1" class="MenuBarHorizontal">
                  <li><a href="#">Item 1</a>                </li>
                  <li><a href="#">Item 2</a></li>
                  <li><a href="#">Item 3</a>                </li>
                  <li><a href="#">Item 4</a></li>
                  <li><a href="#">Untitled Item</a></li>
                </ul></td>
              </tr>
              </table>

    Make sure that you have saved the Spry Assets that go along with the Menubar. I assume that you have, but this menubar is a simple list without its assets.
    Also make sure that you have not inadvertently indicated the Vertical menubar. I assume that you have not.
    When you delete and re-insert a Spry Widget, make sure that you do it by clicking anywhere in the Widget on the Document Window and then clicking on the blue widget tab. Then press delete, and all evidence of the Widget will go from your page. I find that manually editing does not always 'clean up' after disabling a Widget.
    If you can post the page live somewhere, we can give you a better answer.

    Not an issue any more. I re-loaded the site w/o the menu bar
    after I made the original post (as you saw) because of the
    incompatibility issue I was having between Spry and IE6 & 7.
    Before that, I first updated Spry, re-loaded the page with Spry
    menu and still had the same IE 6 & 7 issue. Frankly, I simply
    gave up on Spry, due to time constraints in getting a new site
    layout operational (today was my deadline). From what I've read on
    these and and other forums, Spry does not play well with IE,
    especially IE7. Unfortunately for me, I don't use IE at all, so
    rely on Dreamweaver's compatibility check to tell me if all is
    well. Why Spry works so well on Safari, Firefox and Netscape, and
    not on IE, is beyond me. Thanks, anyway for your comment. Much
    appreciated.

  • Help with Spry Menu Bar Vertical

    I have a page (html) with 3 frames (Top, Left, and Main). The
    Left Frame will have the Spry Vertical Menu that will expand it's
    submenus to the right, which I want it to overlap to the Main Frame
    (which is to the right of the Left frame) .
    Attempts:
    1) I have increase the Z-Index of the Menu to a greater value
    than anything on all frames, but this didn't working.
    Please help!
    Respectfully,
    -Victor

    I too have a similar problem if not exactly the same. I am
    finding it difficult getting information about it because I don't
    really know how to describe what is happening!
    In essence when I have a menu bar as you describe on the left
    and another placeholder AP div to teh right of that menus when I
    preview in a browser the whole things collapses and is very very
    sensitive when you try to navigate to the right and drop out menu
    Mine are vertical (popping out to the left!)
    Now if I remove the place holder all is fine BUT I need to
    use the place holder to position a collapsible panel.
    At one stage I thought it was the collapsable panel causing
    issues but an empty AP DIV tag all cause the issue!

  • Spry Menu Bar (horizontal) - Problems with uneveness (height variance) between adjacent items

    Hello:
    Like many I will confess that I am new to the spry experience and attempting to catch up.  I am trying to design a horizontal menu bar that employs a background image (repeating GIF gradient bar repeated along the the x-access) to create a beveled/rounded edge effect.  I have another with a different hue that is used on focus and mouse over, etc.  While this works well with the drop downs, there appears to be a "boxiness" between adjacent top level menu items and they appear to have slightly different height.  This seems to be determined by the text forms the content of any link or menu item.  In effect it creates other differences in appearance as the outer most (top and bottom edges) of the GIF appear to be cut off from one menu item to the next.  This leaves a very undesirable look to the page as it juts up and then falls back as it the top level item moves across the web page.
    The other point I should make is that this problem, although it exists in all browsers to some extent, is most pronounced in IE6 and below.  Unfortunately many of the anticipated visitors to this site are forced by their IT department to use IE6.
    My question is:  can you set a variable that overrides or determines the height of the background of the menu items?  Alternatively is there some other way of addressing the problem so that I can get a uniform look as the menu items transition to each other.
    Thanks in advance for any help that can be offered.
    Steve.

  • Spry menu bar vertical

    I am trying to customize about 7 different menus on one page,
    and am trying to do so in 2 different styles. The problem is that
    when I alter the new spry menubar css in the css panel on the right
    for the new menu bar (it is called 'menubar2') it alters the
    existing customization for menubar1 - I cannot get a different set
    of CSS rules for the new menu. Is there any way I can get a
    separate set of css rules for the second menu? I am working in
    Dreamweaver CS3.
    THanks for any and all help!!!!

    I am also trying to find the solution to the same problem.
    Would appreciate if you would let me know if you figure it out, or
    found an answere outside this forum. Thanks.

  • Spry menu bar Vertical doesn't work in IE 9

    Hello,
    I hope someone can help me with this problem.
    It is the first time that I've made a website but there are still a few problems in it, especially with IE (when I use other browsers there is no problem).
    The website I've made is www.verdoncklaarne.be. When you click on the Menu to get the submenu, tis submenu opens in the leftcorner of the window.
    Is this a common problem? I still fail to fix it.
    I hope someone can help me! ( If you need more information just ask )
    Greets,
    Ruth
    (I regret my broken English)

    Hi Hans-Günter,
    Thank you very much for your swift response!
    Pardon my ignorance, I have unzipped the package but I don't know where to put the content.
    Can you help?
    Thanks again!

  • IE problems with vertical spry menu bar

    hi,
    first of all: I'm aware that this problem has been discussed
    before. but nothing I've found so far has really helped me.
    the problem is that my vertical spry menu bar doesn't work
    properly with the internet explorer. I've (clumsily) repositioned
    the submenu bars, but that didn't seem to be the main problem.
    I'm using dreamweaver cs3 on a mac and have checked for
    safari and firefox, in which everything works fine. I'd be very
    grateful if someone could have a look at
    www.philipbirau.com/portfolio.htm.
    unfortunatly, I have neither the skills nor the money for
    'professional' webdesign, so any hint will be appreciated. if you
    need more information, please let me know.
    thanks!

  • Spry Menu Bar problem in IE

    I am using a spry menu bar, which looks perfect in firefox, but in IE (version 6.0) I cannot get the font right for when an item on the menu bar has been visited. The font should stay white, but goes to a light purple colour which is hard to read. The site is www.binscombe.net and the CSS code is below. Any help really appreciated.

  • Spry menu bar places vertically, not horizontally?

    I followed the tutorial on using the widget browser to download Spry Menu Bar 2.0 and after configuring for a horizontal bar placed the bar in the tutorial index.html. The placement results in a vertical menu bar. What am I doing wrong?

    /* Settable values for skinning a Basic menu via presets. If presets are not sufficient, most skinning should be done in
    these rules, with the exception of the images used for down or right pointing arrows, which are in the file SpryMenuBasic.css
    These assume the following widget classes for menu layout (set in a preset)
    .MenuBar - Applies to all menubars - default is horizontal bar, all submenus are vertical - 2nd level subs and beyond are pull-right.
    .MenuBarVertical - vertical main bar; all submenus are pull-right.
    You can also pass in extra classnames to set your desired top level menu bar layout. Normally, these are set by using a preset.
    They only apply to horizontal menu bars:
    MenuBarLeftShrink - The menu bar will be horizontally 'shrinkwrapped' to be just large enough to hold its items, and left aligned
    MenuBarRightShrink - Just like MenuBarLeftShrink, but right aligned
    MenuBarFixedLeft - Fixed at a specified width set in the rule '.MenuBarFixedLeft', and left aligned.
    MenuBarFixedCentered -  - Fixed at a specified width set in the rule '.MenuBarFixedCentered',
    and centered in its parent container.
    MenuBarFullwidth - Grows to fill its parent container width.
    In general, all rules specified in this file are prefixed by #MenuBar so they only apply to instances of the widget inserted along
    with the rules. This permits use of multiple MenuBarBasic widgets on the same page with different layouts. Because of IE6 limitations,
    there are a few rules where this was not possible. Those rules are so noted in comments.

    * Some of the rules above use multiple class names on an element for selection, such as "hover" (MenuItemHover) and "has a subMenu" (MenuItemWithSubMenu),
    * giving the selector '.MenuItemWithSubMenu.MenuItemHover'.
    * Unfortunately IE6 does not support using mutiple classnames in a selector for an element. For a selector such as '.foo.bar.baz', IE6 ignores
    * all but the final classname (here, '.baz'), and sets the specificity accordingly, counting just one of those classs as significant. To get around this
    * problem, we use the plugin in SpryMenuBarIEWorkaroundsPlugin.js to generate compound classnames for IE6, such as 'MenuItemWithSubMenuHover'.
    * Since there are a lot of these needed, the plugin does not generate the extra classes for modern browsers, and we use the CSS2 style mutltiple class
    * syntax for that. Since IE6 both applies rules where
    * it should not, and gets the specificity wrong too, we have to order rules carefully, so the rule misapplied in IE6 can be overridden.
    * So, we put the multiple class rule first. IE6 will mistakenly apply this rule.  We follow this with the single-class rule that it would
    * mistakenly override, making sure the  misinterpreted IE6 specificity is the same as the single-class selector, so the latter wins.
    * We then create a copy of the multiple class rule, adding a '.SpryIsIE6' class as context, and making sure the specificity for

    * css style block to make it easy to delete if you want to drop IE6 support.
    * If you decide you do not need IE6 support, you can get rid of these, as well as the inclusion of the SpryMenuBarIEWorkaroundsPlugin.js script.
    * The 'SpryIsIE6' class is placed on the HTML element by  the script in SpryMenuBarIEWorkaroundsPlugin.js if the browser is Internet Explorer 6. This avoids the necessity of IE conditional comments for these rules.

    /* BeginOAWidget_Instance_2141544: #MenuBar */
