Spyder3Elite
Does anyone know the exact process for calibrating an iMac and Ap3 with a Spyder3Elite?
My first question would be what color profile to use in System Preferences/moniter?
The instructions say sRGB, but I don't see that as an option.

In *System Preferences->Displays* if you select color and uncheck the *Show profiles for this display only* checkbox you should have a number of additional profiles.

Monitor Profile incorrect on Dual Monitor Setup

I've searched the forums and I can't find an answer to my problem. I've read about dual monitor setups in Windows and how to set the defaults and whatnot, but it doesn't seem to fix my problem.
I am running on an nVidia GeForce 8600M GT, Windows 7 x64, Photoshop CS4 x64. I calibrated my main display (Dell Vostro 1700) as well as the attached monitor (ASUS VK246H) using Datacolor Spyder3Elite. Both monitor profiles seem to load just fine. I've also went into Windows' color manager and set the system defaults for each monitor respectively. The problem I'm having is that if I were to load Photoshop on the 2nd monitor, Photoshop only uses the main display's color profile (Vostro 1700) and not the ASUS VK246H profile. What could be going wrong?
Just to clarify, what I mean by "loading PS on the 2nd monitor" is that when I execute Photoshop.exe, the splash screen and main window shows up on the 2nd monitor, not the main monitor (which is what I want).function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}

As a test I intentionally misconfigured the profile for my Monitor #1 (left) so that it's REALLY OBVIOUS which profile is being used. When set this way, on Monitor #1 red colors will appear pale orange.
An open document, floating in a window:
If COMPLETELY displayed on Monitor #1, Photoshop will use the Monitor #1 profile.
If even 1 pixel of the edge of the image is moved onto Monitor #2, it will use the Monitor #2 profile on the entire image.

I'll need to dive into Color when I finish editing my one-hour long documentary in a couple months. The doc is intended to be shown on a large theatre screen one time, then broadcast on community-access television and lent through our regional public library system on DVD. My question(s): Can the Apple 30" Cinema Display be used for color grading? Or HP's 2480zx LCD Monitor? Would the Spyder3Elite Display Calibration product be useful? Thanks in advance.
Interestingly enough, the options for trying to push a computer text display into being a grade monitor are narrowing down to nothing. The harder people have been trying to make a silk purse out of these sow's ears has resulted in the inevitable conclusion that hey, there really is no such thing as free lunch. Even the vaunted ACD's after watching two of them for nearly three years now, can't hold a calibration for more than a couple of hours and then go magenta. Its because we need so much green to make D65 white. Those poor green dots just peter out and then red and blue take over. So you better be fast, because you will be working with a different monitor for the second half of the day.
An interesting thread on a pro telecine site has been discussing the HP Dreamcolor... the general conclusion is that it is probably great for a cubicle farm full of compositing and animation artists who more need a match between them than truly accurate colorimetry. At least its consistent. A high end grading device company member warned against using certain types of "probes", since at varying resolutions of display, you really have no idea what the thing is integrating to come up with a white point.
One of the really huge things that is missing is the ENVIRONMENT that the grade is taking place in. Sure, the monitor is important... but almost equally so is the room in which it is situated... its ambient illumination and the requirement for a constant contrast neutral 18% D65 background against which to judge the monitor itself, not just what it is trying to display.
That's one of the reasons that the COLOR GUI is that "ugly" grey.... even though its probably not grey at all if the monitor you're using to display it is whacked. Every time you look at it... it is influencing the balance of your target image. Imagine you're the beer taster at the world's finest brewery.... and what (hold on a minute while I savour the fantasy.... okay, I'm back) but between samples you take a big gulp of vinegar. Right. Is that going to work?

What color space does Adobe's Cinema Display have?
I just calibrated my Macbook Pro with a Spyder3Elite and got a bit desapointed when I descovered that the best color space it can show is sRGB. After finding this, and since I've been thinking about buying an iMac for a while, I got a bit frightened. Thus, I changed my atention to Adobe's Cinema Display in hope that it has a larger color gamut.
The thing is I can't seam to find anyone that can tell me what color space does this displays can produce, iMac nor Cinema Display. If there's anyone who has already calibrated any of these displays, can you tell me what's the best color space they can work on?

1st off, There are 2 kinds of color spaces. Device-dependent and device-independent. Hence, a display has a limited color gamut that it can produce, it has it's own color space.
When I calibrated mine, this was the result:
Purple: Adobe RGB 1998
Green: sRGB
Red: Display's Gamut
The thing is, before I calibrated my monitor, I thought it had an Adobe RGB 1998. Got pretty desapointed when I found out it didn't... Nevertheless, what I'm looking is to know if there's any Apple display with a larger gamut than the one from my Mac or if they're all sRGB...

Why do my (raw) pictures display differently in LR2 and CS4 ???

When I "Open with CS4" from LR2 the pictures seem to be opened as "raw" unprocessed pictures. LR2 did not ask for any options (which it does once I have modified the image in LR2). The raw develop screen from CS4 does not open...
any Ideas?

MichaelIndeed the Monitors (3 of them) are calibrated. I use a Spyder3Elite for calibrating. All three monitors show the same effect in any combination of LR2 and PS-CS4 displayed on the same or different monitors. To my knowledge I've never touched any settings within any adobe product that involves monitor adjustment and never had any problems with PS-CS3 using the same constellation.
Do you have any suggestions of where to look, or which settings to check?

Prints are horrible. Dark/colors are way off. I have tried every setting and combinations of settings in Pse 8...nothing works. I tried different print profiles on my computer, no improvement.
Using an IMac OS 10.6.2, Canon Pro 9000 and PSE 8 with Bridge CS4.
Within print, I am able to access the print dialog box where I am able to select the type of paper, source and quality (under Quality and Media). Under Color options I am able to select sample type (std., landscape, portrait etc.)...But the rest of the menu/screen is not available. i.e. the color mode section, and the brightness section.
If I use the software supplied by Canon, outside of PSE 8...."easy photo print" or "easy photo print ex" my prints are 1000% better. I have access to all of the print dialog sections. However, these programs "see" .jpg's...not .psd or .cr2 files.
I downloaded the free trial of Aperture, and the few files I imported print great. Nearly dead on with no adjustments. Access to all of the printer profiles (for specialty paper) access to all of the print dialog boxes/sections(Quality & Media as well as Color Options).
I like PSE 8 and would prefer to print through it, rather than open a secondary program for printing purposes. Nor do I want to "learn" and buy Aperture 3, since I am comfortable with PSE.
I Previously used PSE on a "windows" platform and never had any problems with my prints. I purchased PSE 8 when I bought the IMac.
Is there a fix/patch/download that will allow me to print using PSE 8?
If anyone has any suggestions, I would appreciate them.I have some new information to share based on some help I received from a Datacolor technical engineer (makers of the Spyder3 color management system) that has resulted in prints that I would consider a very close match to the screen images in Photoshop Elements 8 Mac using Color Handling = Photoshop Elements Manages Colors and not Printer Manages Colors (although that option also yields good prints and was the only was I was able to get decent print prior to this info from Datacolor).
I'm using a Canon i9900, Snow Leopard, Spyder 3 Studio - my monitor is calibrated using the Spyder3Elite (I don't think this matters so long as you're using some kind of calibration). Also I'm using a custom profile I created using the Spyder3Print Studio for the type of paper I'm using. In all previous attempts using Color Handling = Photoshop Elements Manages Colors under PSE8 yielded photos that were very different from the colors I saw on screen and it appears that the 'fix' came down to the profile I created: specifically the settings I used in the Canon driver, for printing the color targets for the custom paper were not correct. After reprinting the targets using the suggestions the Datacolor rep suggested and re-measuring, re-creating the ICC profile for that paper, I was able to print from PSE8 with decent results employing the new profile. The tech mentioned that Canon drivers do not have an 'off' setting for color management, so when I printed the original targets, it was employing a profile already (when creating targets for measurement you cannot use a profile
These are the settings in PSE8 that I'm using that are specific to the equipment I've noted above (this may not apply to Epson drivers etc):
Under Print - More Options - Color Management:
- Color Management = Photoshop Elements Manages Colors
- Printer Profile = the profile that matches the paper/Media setting
- Rendering Intent = Saturation (recommended for the Spyder3Print system but your setting may vary)
Once you hit 'Print' then the dialog for the printer driver comes up:
- Under Color Matching - you should find that it's greyed out but preselected to 'Colorsync' (if you selected Color Management = Photoshop Elements Manages Colors in PSE 8 Color Management)
- Under Quality and Media - set the media type to be the same as that set for the creation of the ICC profile. In my case = Photo Paper Plus Glossy
I don't adjust any of the other printer settings.
The last part of this has to do with the ColorSync Utility.
Under Devices - Printers - Canon i9900 - I've set all the listed profiles Current Profiles = Set to Factory (the default)
For printing the profile targets, the Datacolor tech mentioned my original profile had a gamut that was way too small for the printer and paper combination I was using. This was likely due to the fact that I printed the targets with an active printer profile vs no profile. Since the current Canon drivers don't have an 'off' setting the tech suggested that within the Spyder3Print application, when printing the targets use the following (his own words follow):

Color Matching- ColorSync
ColorSync- Other Profiles
Other Profiles- Generic RGB
What Generic RGB does is act like a pass through so that the driver uses the Printer Profile you selected or no profile at all, like in the case of printing the measurement charts in Spyder3PrintSR. So with these settings the Canon driver essentially acts like color management is turned off."
If you have a Canon printer and you're creating your own profiles I would try the above to see if you get similar results. Let me know if you have any questions about what I've written. -

I have bought a new monitor lately, a Dell Ultrasharp U2410 and my very pleased with it but I have encountered some problems, mostly with sRGB and AbobeRGB color spaces.
I have calibrated my monitor correctly with Spyder3Elite (5800 - 120 - 2.2) and I'm using Europe Prepress 3 color profile in Photoshop and Illustrator as I am a graphic designer and I mostly work in CMYK color spaces.
This means that I use AbodeRGB and Coated Fogra 39 in the programs.
I begun having problems with RGB color space when I realised differences in images I was trying to export from Photoshop and Illustrator for Internet use ("save for web" menu) both in Firefox Broswer which I have calibrated too ("about:config" menu).
And I will give you and example:
I am using the "Color Index 2" book very often for easily finding color tones both in RGB and CMYK. I have use it for finding and matching the colors for my id and website.
So I have selected a blue color tone #00adef which according to the book and my monitor is R:0 G:173 B:239. This is actually Cyan 100% accoriding to the book (my monitor reads 90% but no big deal there).
When I see the color tone though AdobeRGB color space in Photoshop and Illustrator, it looks very close to the book. When I see it though sRGB the difference is huge!
And let's say that this quite normal as AdobeRGB is a lot wider color space compairing to sRGB. And let's say that I have to get used to it as I use a wide gamut monitor now.
The real problem is this: No matter how I export my files for web ("save for web" menu) both in AdobeRGB, by checking Embeded ICC, and in sRGB, when I use "Print Screen" to take a color sample, the color values change!
So to sum up:
1. I know that it's different to have a wide gamut monitor but how "normal" is to see such huge difference in RGB color spaces?
2. If browser color management if OFF and I use AbobeRGB color space, everything looks the same. If browser color management is ON no matter if I USE AbobeRGB or sRGB I have problems (color differences + "print screen" inaccurate color tones).
Can anyone tell me what I do wrong here, if I should or should not do something to fix all this because guess what, if I can't fix the problem with my own color palletes for my site and id, I can't work correctly either. Help!
I have alredy read lots or forums, reviews etc about color management but I am still confused about where I am doing it wrong.

windows Print Screen (screenshot on Mac) I believe is based on the monitor profile, the Mac embeds the monitor profile in its screenshots
i may suggest that you get a handle on how colormanaged apps apply the source profile and Convert (or transform) the colors to the Monitor or Print profile
whereas unmanaged apps (for practical purposes) send the RGB numbers straight through to the monitor unaltered
moreover, some windows apps that claim to be color managed only transform (or Convert) the color to sRGB (they are not fully color managed like Photoshop, Photoshop converts to the monitor profile)
all this is pretty easy to observe (especially on a wide gamut monitor) if you apply the basic theory... -
Brightness calibration with a Spyder 3 Elite
Hello! I just got a Spyder3Elite and I've been facing a problem. The software asks me to set my monitor to 180cd/m2. The thing is there is no way to preciely set a specific brighteness. I only have a slider.
I called Apple and I was told that there was no software in OS X Lion, but there would be lots of 3rd party softwares that could do that. Does aonyone know such software? If anyone has this same product, how did u do it with a Macbook Pro?

My P4 HT based PC from Dell needs a replacement and I want to make sure that I buy a new PC optimal for LR and other photo and video editing applications.
My thought so far:

- One very fast disk for OS and cach (Raptor?)

How important is the graphic card and what's your advice her? Is Nvidia Geforce 9600 w/ 768 MB OK?
Should I go for Vista 64 and more RAM?My LR PC is Intel Extreme Motherboard with E8400 Core 2 Duo. I didn't go Quad because I don't think the app is capable of getting much out of Quad--yet. But the Mobo will take a Quad processor when that time comes. 8GB 1333 RAM. C drive is a pair of WD Velociraptor 300s in RAID 1. D drive is OCZ 128GB SSD. Vista 64 is on C, all other software is loaded on D. Software load times are nearly instantaneous. Running Vista 64 and LR2/64. H drive is a pair of WD Caviar Black 1TB in RAID 1. I drive is gigabit-LAN attached D-Link 323 1TB Seagate drives in RAID 1--located in separate building 150 feet away in case the house burns down. Video cards are nVidia Geforce 9800s if I recall correctly--with 512 MB each. Each one of these drives a Dell 2408. Might not need 2 cards. But I wanted to be sure I could color calibrate both monitors separately. Spyder3Elite wants to keep one profile PER CARD, not per monitor.
The video cards were a real pain because they are full-length crads and blocked the SATA ports on the Mobo. I have to buy SATA cables with 2-piece molded connectors and cut the connector apart so I could bend the cable at a sharp right angle coming out of the port. Regular right-angle SATA cables would not work because the mobo SATA ports are in pairs and the right angle connector blocked one port when it was plugged into the other! Otherwise no problems--Antec 900 case and Antec 850 watt PS. I bought a spare PS in case this one ever fails--can't afford any downtime.
The PC flys, as you would expect. LR2 and PS are a dream to use. Vista 64 has been rock solid and fast. This PC is dedicated to LR, PS and Fotofusion. I don't have any e-mail or MS-Office on it or any other routine PC apps.
LR2 probably has a nasty memory leak of some kind under Vista 64. LR2 reboots my PC if I try to do too much. At first I thought this was an incompatibility with the SSD because there are some threads on the web (see the OCZ web site) about SSD incompatibility with MS-Vista. However, after long trial and usage, I'm pretty convinced this is a typical, old-fashioned memory leak under Vista 64.
I can work on 100-125 images just fine. It's all great and I love LR2. But if I push it to 150 or 175 images, LR picks it's moment and reboots my PC. No error message--nothing. Just a warm restart.
It's not a general PC problem--it only happens in LR2. I can work in Photoshop or Fotofusion all day without any problem. Soooooo...I have become disciplined about exiting LR2 after 100-125 images, letting it clean up its cache, and then going back in. It's not a MAJOR pain as computer glitches go, but it is unfortunate.
I assume this is some bug in LR2's cache management. I don't have to restart the PC to keep it from happening. All I have to do is exit LR2 and go back in. And then I'm good to go for another 125 images.
Even with this bug, LR2 is so damn great that I use it happily instead of my old Bridge/ACR routine.

24" LED calibrating with Spyder3 Elite - reliable?
Has anyone here used the Spyder3Elite (with the updated software) to calibrate the LED display?
I know the idea is to control/reduce the luminosity on these displays but before I get two I'd like any feedback on the usability for color correcting/adjusting photographs in Aperture.As another suggestion, I would also be interested in a HDMI KVM solution as well....

10-Bit color calibration problem
I have the following setup:
Dual HP ZR30w Wide LCD Monitors, each connected via Display Port to each below card.
Dual ATI FirePro v7800 (FIreGL) display adapters
Latest FirePro drivers from the AMD website (file name: FirePro_8.85.7.2_Win7x64_125182.exe)
Win 7 Pro 64-bit
Spyder3Elite 4.0.2
When I enable 10-bit color in the ATI drivers, and use the Spyder 3 package to perform
a calibration the profile is absurd --- light yellows render as light green, off whites become
purple... If, in 10-bit I switch to an old profile generated when running 8-bit I get reasonable
but slightly off color. Running 8-bit with an 8-bit calibration works perfectly to my eye.
Colorvision claims there is no problem, that the above ATI/HP pipeline is really 8-bit. Here
is the quote from their tech support:
"the option you deactivated is not a 10bit communication between your graphic card and your monitor.
That's just a 10bit LUT/mode in your video card which will be reduced to 8bit output to your monitor.
Please understand we can't give you a fix for a 10bit pseudo wide color depth mode of your video card.
The output is 8bit and that's all. The only advantage is that you could tweak color with less reduction.
But this has nothing to do with the industrial standardized ICC profiling system."
Does what they say make any sense? My understanding of the HP monitors and ATI cards is that
it is a true 10-bit pipeline.
If I do have a true 10-bit pipeline, what can I do to run in that mode and have well calibrated monitors?
I contacted integrated color, as they have software that will work with my Spyder 3 sensor and they
said I would not see any benefit from 10-bit monitor color and their software does not support 10-bit
mode. Does that ring true?

AndrewIt should also be noted here that banding is potentially a bigger problem with wide gamut, since the values are farther apart. So while 10 bit is perhaps not strictly needed, it has become more desirable.
I see clear banding on that test image, on my wide gamut/8 bit Eizo S2243.
If in-monitor calibration makes it a good match to Adobe RGB 1998, and in the context of an 8 bits/channel color pipeline, then no calibration or profile-based transform would be required when you edit in the Adobe RGB 1998 color space.
This is where I still don't agree (but we probably shouldn't go there again ) I concede that my previous position was a bit...ah, inflexible. Mainly that's because I've since realized that there are many variables that need to be brought under strict control before you can make any claims to accuracy.
So let's just say it's about peace of mind. There are many unknowns in the equation above, and it seems to me the best approach is to pin down as many as you can.
As I write this, I'm on my way to look at proofs for a book I've supplied 80% of the photographs for. I've done what I can, I have peace of mind, and still...
